As someone from a coastal, industrial city both the Halifax and Beirut disasters are terrifying reminders of why we highly regulate dangerous commerce. Eveytime I hear some rich docklands owner complain about regulations, I think about these events and it sends a chill down my spine. So many lives lost for so little. Two absolute tragedies, and the best way to honor the victims is to simultaneously remember them and make sure it never happens again. What a shame for our Canadian and Lebanese brothers and sisters.
The regulations were the reason the ship was seized and left to rot in the first place. If it weren't for the "authorities" hijacking that ship it would have simply sailed on through to it's destination. How people can see how badly the "authorities" behaved here and think "huummm, needs more regulations!". I have no words.
@@Mooja12 There was no statement about having "more" regulations but the right ones. Just stating that having stricked regulations for dealing with dangerous commerce is good and mandatory.

Each of these videos is full of hundreds of small clips and takes. Carfully put together. The work behind this must be amazing! And the topics are awesome, and fun to!
Thank you for taking the time to post this explanation about how easily human greed and incompetence by allot of different people can nearly destroy a major city.
Straight up. Comes down to this. No matter how good you think your storage is, only put as much boom stuff in one place as you could deal with if it went BOOM.
Don't forget that the country's main grain supply storage was also right next to the spot where this massive explosion occurred causing a loss of 85% of their supply of stored grains! Tragic!
This was so very tragic. My prayers for all affected. 🙏 Thank you for presenting the info Anton. We can only hope to learn and prevent it from happening again.
Customs officials, knowing the danger, had sent letters pleading with judges to come to a resolution on this case for 4 years straight (until 2017) and nothing was ever done.
Anton Petrov , I've been watching your video's for years now and would like to thank you for the first non political analysis of the explosion in the home country of my parents. Love your work always, keep it up...
It was an appalling incident, no ifs, buts and maybes about it. But it seems to me that old lady exemplifies what I've read of the Lebanese spirit. In spite of a tough history, they seem to pick themselves up and recover eventually (though as usual, the damned politicians should have done something and I bet they don't live anywhere near the docks). Though it won't be easy, and we could wish this had never happened, I hope and believe they'll do it again.
The tragic is, things were just about to go to some kind of normal, citizens were actually protesting corruption at that time, there was a lot of motivation to get a decent administration going, there was a growing sector of private businesses of all sorts, cafes, hairdressers, dance schools, what not, and then - BOOM-. The city is pretty much finished at this point, it´s a total mess. A lot of housing destroyed, medical fecilities damaged, infrastrucutre damaged, it´s questionable if and when it will be back to a city you would wanna live in.

Welcome to business. This is also why the Democratic system was looked at ideally as apose to the Monarch system. As most government structures where seen with a similar discontent for the same reasons
People will wake up one day realize they are just a legalized mafia. You got to keep government small, keep them out of your lives and business. They governments we have aren't leaders. If governments disappeared right now... everyone would still live like they normally do. We have put to much power in the hands of a few... thinking they will benefit us.
@@VengefulMaverick when the government is small and Powerless, then non-governmental organizations move into the power vacuum. These organizations and individuals are not at all responsive to individuals. So you don't want a government to be too small and you don't want a government to be too big. It's hard to define the just right level but it appears to be somewhere around 20 to 30% of GDP. Below there, you start seeing lawlessness and loss of national productivity because basic services aren't done and you don't get the multiplying effect. Above their the government starts to starve out Private Industry and to smother Private Industry. And since it's so powerful, the same Bad actors put their effort into taking over the government. Because it's much easier to take over an existing powerful organization then to build one from scratch. But whatever you do, you're always subject to the iron rule of oligarchy. It's just a matter of time unless you are a tiny Nation. But you even see the iron rule of oligarchy in effect and homeowners associations which are fairly small governments.
Regarding the supposed fireworks... I've seen many videos of different fires with fireworks. They are very different from the initial fire in Beirut. My best guess is that the initial fire involved stored ammunition.

Great job explaining not only the details of the explosion, but of the missteps that led to it. Sucks to live in Beruit with such incompetence at the wheel.
Shrapnel yes shockwave no, as sound moves like water over buildings the pressure regains, also if u were standing below the other side of the silo youd burst your ears from the vacuum
@@atticgamer3134 It would still reflect a portion of the energy, not all of it for sure but shockwaves can and do echo off any sudden transitions between mediums with different properties. Also, it doesn't need to go around which would greatly reduce the energy of a shockwave but rather the portion of the energy not reflected would pass through the silo with portions of that being reflected again when it hit the transition to the air at the other side. But yes nothing short of a perfect vacuum would stop a shockwave propagating through it but they can certainly attenuate the transmitted energy.
Yeah... That was horrible. Unfortunately, something similar can always happen, because there are hundreds of places like that around the world. 🙄 But... We can always hope.

#1 my heart still goes out to all those impacted by this event. Thank you for the information Anton i love the details and how even acidents can give us information in this day and age due to many advancements we have made globally.
The state is 100% at fault here. The prior owner warned them several times about the danger of the sized property. Again, it was 100% the state and not a 'greedy owner'.
The videos of the explosion and images of the aftermath are.... You almost forget to blink and breath while seeing them. Can't blame the Lebanese for protesting, considering the incompetence that ended up shattering (and in many cases, ending) so many lives.
Holy shit I 100% forgot this happened, I know that sounds uber shitty of me but wow 2020 was such a nuts year that this completely blew passed my mind omg.
There's really nothing to learn here, except that if one stores large quantities of explosives carelessly, this kind of thing happens. Anyone involved with the least competence in the various government organizations involved already knew this. The fact is the either just didn't care, or really wanted to try to hang on to the explosives, for some reason.

Strongly agree.
There was also a *lot* of corruption in this instance
The regulations were the reason the ship was seized and left to rot in the first place. If it weren't for the "authorities" hijacking that ship it would have simply sailed on through to it's destination.
How people can see how badly the "authorities" behaved here and think "huummm, needs more regulations!". I have no words.
@@Mooja12 There was no statement about having "more" regulations but the right ones. Just stating that having stricked regulations for dealing with dangerous commerce is good and mandatory.
@@Mooja12 the ship was literally unseaworthy. How exactly did you miss that? Or are you intentionally miscontruing this fact to support your ideological agenda? I'll let the readers of these comments make that judgment.
I have family living near the port of Beirut, they’ve shown me on skype what happened to the house, ( almost total destruction) and that was not as bad as other buildings, and houses totally unhabitable.
They told me it was more terrifying than all the wars they went through.😔
Thank you Anton for this scientific video about this explosion that took the lives of more than 50 people and maimed hudreds due to glass and rubble😢
Yep, the latest event is always worse than the previous one. Things just continuously get worse.
@@Graeme_Lastname Indeed, unfortunately.
Your words relayed second hand (someone told it to you) add a contextual layer to this story greater than the magnitude of the blast!
Thank you for sharing....
I don't know how to even articulate the feeling that the words created?
When I watched the blast on TV, I could feel a sense of tearing and shredding as if being sand blasted by glass shards? It made me nauseous...... Your description depicts the feeling I felt. How is that possible?
I read your words as if they are 100% true. No matter many people it was passed through before hand. I felt the story you shars so strongly..... As if it is my own memory?
I gasped when read it. Yes the story was traumatizing when it happened, it's painful to reflect or share...but that description is so chilling and surreal it's on a whole other level
@@Jarmezrocks thank you for your touching words. I hope your are safe and well.
It was terrifying to see all the destruction. Some friends were severely wounded because of the glass chards😔
After watching the videos and news reports last year I was astonished that the death toll wasn't much greater. And, I have not heard any explanation as to why? Just luck with people not being close?
Out of all the scientists on UA-cam talking about various scientific things, you are possibly the only one who doesn't annoy me with your manner. You are here because you love speaking about science. And to see and hear you get excited over different things is awesome, especially because you don't exadarate it but try to hide it and stick to the facts. I may be devolving a man crush on you.......
Ty Anton being from Halifax we still send a Christmas tree to Boston for the help provided to this funtastic city.
at 2:24 you made a slight mistake and said 3 tonnes, the ship was actually transporting around 3000 tonnes of ammonia. otherwise a very informative video.
I was looking for this comment. 3 tons is nothing. I know people who keep close to that just in case!
Yes, thank you. Can't believe that I had to scroll so far down for this.
Being one thousand times off the mark is not a slight mistake lol.
3000 tons sounds like a lot but 6 million pounds sounds seriously unreal
@@genebohannon8820 Yeah, 3 tons is like what? Less than an elephant?

@@LuisAldamiz I agree.
Thank you for reminding us of a huge story which the mainstream media have forgotten about.
I was just wondering the other day if there was any updates to this disaster since it's been completely ignored for the last year
I know that there are still a lot of stray animals in need....
Hope people are more lucky.
🙏🌹
one should ask.....why was it ignored by msm??? they had everyone distracted.......
i don't think you can expect the msm to follow up every single story that exists. If this story was of such interest to you, then you should have found the updates yourself.
@@Stefan-jk5gx pal, it was the largest non nuclear (allegedly) explosion, in a city, that destroyed everything. If that's not msm worthy then there is a serious issue with their ethics, and usually it can be determined that something sinister has gone on. Quite a scary event, rarely ever lost words from news but the footage was just unbelievable. This incident is worth the follow-up thank you for that!

Hello Anton, you wonderful person! Thank you for your explanation of how this happened and all your videos. You have a gift for breaking it all down in ways that even a grandma like me can understand. Love from West Virginia USA 💗
Completely off topic, but I've been watching your videos for 3 years and somehow never knew you lived in South Korea... Wow, learn something new everyday I guess! Love the video as always, you really know how to explain complex topics in a more understandable way.
Thanks for linking everything on the description.
About 6 months ago I watched a lengthy Australian presentation about this explosion, it was shocking and very disheartening. My heart goes out to all affected by this tragic event.
Affected.
Thank you Anton for covering this event, great interesting details, thank you excellent as usual 🎁👍😊
Tragic!
Ironically also is that that amount of ammonium nitrate couldve doubled that grain supply as a fertilizer.
We heard and felt it over here in Larnaca Cyprus
That’s crazy 😳
Damn
I'm in Limassol Cyprus and same here
Tragic
That roughly 152 miles or 245 kilometers. Basically the distance from New York City to Providence, RI.
Truly terrifying.

You are amazing! Thank you for sharing this. You keep us informed. Well done.
Thank you for explaining this in such a simple manner to allow so many of us understand and be more informed.
This was so very tragic. My prayers for all affected. 🙏 Thank you for presenting the info Anton. We can only hope to learn and prevent it from happening again.

Love your work always, keep it up...
🏴 So sad A couple days later an old lady in her destroyed home was playing old Lang syne on her piano My tears where flowing
Isn't it called Auld Lang Syne? Old long since?
@@tuxuhds6955 aye buddy that’s correct 👍
@@ThomasKelly669 It can't leave an eye dry no matter how it's written, though.
Thank you for sharing this Anton.
That explosion never fails to make my jaw drop. Lord, those poor people in that city are going to be haunted by that for a long time.
They got much more terrifying things that haunt that city.
There was a years long civil war in that city and a couple of invasions. Trust me, explosions are almost normal, sadly.
@@hhale Not in peacetime though....
@@paavobergmann4920 Even during Covid? Had it already gone through the worst of the impact from covid? Gosh ... I remember hearing stories of the beauty & fun of Beirut, in between its political challenges....
Thank you Anton. I find your videos so very well researched. God bless you and your the wonderful knowledge you impart to us.
Thank you for this video Anton. I’ve been wondering for so long why this happened and now I know!
Same here, it's so much better to disregard the cause/effect in news until we can get Anton's summary of an event.
This is so sad and it makes me so angry. Our leaders are just leaders, devoid of their people, only caring about profiting/growing and ignoring anything outside that circle
Aka Republicans lol
Someone disliked this video and it has only been out for 1 minute.
That's disgusting behavior.

Don’t like the T - Shirt.
Regarding the supposed fireworks...
I've seen many videos of different fires with fireworks. They are very different from the initial fire in Beirut.
My best guess is that the initial fire involved stored ammunition.
This is a very well thought out and nicely presented analysis of the Beirut explosion. WELL DONE!!!
This has got to be one of my favorite cases of an instrument designed for one purpose. Can be used for something completely different due to scientific understanding.
“What are they storing in this one?”
“Idk like fireworks and chemistry stuff probably”
“Cool”

As a wonderful person I promise not to negligently abandon a highly explosive shipment.
We're going to hold you to that, my friend. So I hope you're not just saying that.
So then why did you dump that Monica chick?
Now all we need is another Wonderful person to promise not to stow crates of fireworks into a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate.

Doubly well done my man. For not abandoning explosives and for managing expectations.
Setting the bar at a comfortable high is the secret for long, happy life.
Sick Anton! Very well told. You should write books and do more with story telling like this, and become like a carl segan
Great job explaining not only the details of the explosion, but of the missteps that led to it. Sucks to live in Beruit with such incompetence at the wheel.
Thank you for taking the time to create and post this educational video of that explosion.
You're awesome
That tall silo building that survived must have shielded part of the city from the effects of the blast.
It would have tampered the blast towards the ocean a bit
It also means that Beirut lost its entire supply of wheat and flour - no bread...
Shrapnel yes shockwave no, as sound moves like water over buildings the pressure regains, also if u were standing below the other side of the silo youd burst your ears from the vacuum
@@allangibson2408 silo was almost empty at the time
@@atticgamer3134 It would still reflect a portion of the energy, not all of it for sure but shockwaves can and do echo off any sudden transitions between mediums with different properties.
Incredibly sad. Wonderful people died...
Yeah... That was horrible. Unfortunately, something similar can always happen, because there are hundreds of places like that around the world. 🙄

The state is 100% at fault here. The prior owner warned them several times about the danger of the sized property. Again, it was 100% the state and not a 'greedy owner'.
The videos of the explosion and images of the aftermath are.... You almost forget to blink and breath while seeing them.

Thanks Anton for this interesting broadcast. Appreciate you.
The more we learn from this disaster - the less chance of another one like it occurring in the future.
Common sense says to not store tons of explosives in one location near a city for years on end
There's really nothing to learn here, except that if one stores large quantities of explosives carelessly, this kind of thing happens. Anyone involved with the least competence in the various government organizations involved already knew this. The fact is the either just didn't care, or really wanted to try to hang on to the explosives, for some reason.
I'm curious about the crew of the ship. Did they get home? Or do they just live Beirut now because they have no way to get home?
Anton: “Mostly because it was an unusual case. “
*cough* government ineptitude mostly.
But how is that 'unusual' in any way? :P
