You put together a clear & informative video about shooting & developing film in China. Kudos for making it and going to China for shooting & shopping film cams. Believe the common enthusiasm for film cams can be a bridge between cultures. China itself is one of the most amazing places for shooters, with historic places and incredible scenery. Love this video and shared experience ❤❤

Awesome video. Thanks for showing us your experience with film photography in China. Most Westerners overlook the fact that there are tons of knowledgeable and talented photographers and technicians in China, whose influences are just geolocked. Hope more people travel there with film!

The best thing about shooting film in china is developing, film, and the camera are way cheaper compare to the states. However the lab quality are mostly not so good, there is only a few of them is really producing high quality developing and scanning, there is two i am using one is 金陵银盐馆 and another one is F212沸点, both are taobao. And taobao do have English version I think, it's like a oversea version or what, when i use it in the states it will turn to english. About the distance, well, china is pretty damn big, and not a lot people shooting film. 上海星光摄影器材城 and 上文摄影器材 is definitely worth it. Also in china you always can find people creating cool stuffs, like a guy on xiaohongshu made a leica looking camera, i bought a half auto film developing machine called takumi home darkroom.

For sure. China has heaps of innovation for sure. Thanks for mentioning those labs I'm able to use Tao Bao so we might end up doing that on our next trip.

Most labs sucks, and we mostly use delivery so we don’t have to walk all the way to some narrow aisle😂You can ask your partner to search for weima photo in taobao, it is based in Shanghai and has the best e6 process from what I learned in china. You can also take the subway to their store but it is a very small room in an “ancient” building. Anyway don’t expect to have the some result anywhere in china that you can get in North America.

Yeah Weima is featured in this video and i've been there. I just don't trust courier that much. Though I did get Weima to send the negatives to my partner's parents house. I'm not based in America. Try across the ocean at the bottom of the world. I think China exceeded/meet my expectations. It was a great time and I can't wait to come back.

I've seen both of your videos on shooting films in Japan and China. As a Chinese guy who has lived in Japan for 10 years, I can say for sure that developing and scanning films is slightly cheaper in China but the quality is not as good.
As I live in Tokyo, me and my photographer friends would always go to pro labs like Photographers' lab at Akasaka, Shashinkosha at Akihabara, Fujifilm's own lab at Ginza and Tac-Photo at Nakano. They can do both C-41, E-6 and black and white films of any format. Developing C-41 or E-6 films would take roughly 1 or w days at max. The quality is stunning, I'd say way better than any labs I have tried in China. These labs are called pro labs because their main customers are professional photographers, which shows how good their developing and enlraging techniques are. Yet I have never find such lab in China sadly.
ECN-2 is a different story though. Motion picture films are not commonly sold in Japan, hence the reason why developing them are quite tricky. You can fins labs which their owners are Chinese. They will import all the chemicals and equipments from China so they would happily take your ECN-2 films.

I think the reason you encountered problems in Japan is that you don't have a friends who could speak Japanese or have knowledge of shooting and developing films here. While your partner is Chinese, so that would not be an issue in China.
Those pro labs I mentioned above, I honestly have no idea if you could search for them in English. Also as I am a fluent Japanese speaker, I have no idea if one who cannot speak Japanese shows up, what would happen.

@@GlaciaDay This is good to know. Thank you for not gate keeping I very much appreciate that. I will add this into my future resources so I can pass this onto others. In regards to the help from my partner that wasn't so much about finding labs as I found all of them by looking online myself over multiple nights when I could in English, Chinese & Japanese. Her help was when I couldn't use google in china and just communication and navigation around the big cities which I'm very thankful for as my Mandarin is very limited. As for ECN-2 films yeah I do see myself just shooting those in China for the most part for share ease and cost. I would like to shoot more slide in Japan though. Holding my slides of little pieces of Japan is great. Thank you for your comments its very helpful and informative. Comments like these are why I made this video as it will be helpful to others in the future. QQ have you ever developed film in Hong Kong? We are going there next year before spring festival in China and would be keen for recommendations.

@@areelguy I'd guess Hong Kong is quite similar to Mainland China. But you could find way more information by searching in English. I went there last year but decided to bring my films back to Japan for developing.
