18.04 as other LTS releases are bestially still betas. The "real release" is 18.04.1, about 3 months from now. At this time all 16.04 users are notified about upgrade to 18.04.1. Not before that.

I used Ubuntu regularly ever since 5.10 and I have always had issues with the April releases. Ever since 6.06, the LTS's have almost always been buggier for me than the October releases. I have learned to wait until the July .1 release for LTS's and then they usually get it right. Come July, 18.04.1 should be good.

I had the same issue. The problem in my case was that the Nvidia driver was not installed. To fix it when you are in the purple screen press: CTRL + ALT _ F2 and a terminal prompt should appear, login in that terminal and run: "ubuntu-drivers devices" to list the drivers and the recommended drivers to install. Next use "sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall", and "sudo reboot". Hope it helps

I think an LTS release should initially be released as a non-LTS, so they can take 6-12 months to work the bugs out. That's how it's done with Node.js.

    • @mwont

They usually try new things on X.10 and then do some minor changes for the X.04 when it's an even year.

What troubleshooting process did you use? I just didn't hear you describe an approach that would be much help. Did you review and compare any logs for example? You had good instances and bad and could have made more helpful comparisons than I heard described. Did you find anyone else that had done any of that? I'm not an ubuntu user but this did seem more rant than helpful.

Antergos user checking in. +1 love for Arch-based distros. Dependencies are handled better. System boots/reboots faster. Everything's more stable.
I've always been able to, personally, find something to complain about with every distro... usually within a few hours. I'm a few months into Antergos and I have zero complaints.

That is bull, Arch is a rolling distro.. if you're not updating it on regular basis you can count on it that it would crash. Fedora or Debian are smarter choices.

Yeah, I had this issue with 16.04, I think, and one cause is that in beta's you still find software that it's being testing untill the last moment; when they release the final image, they don't package the testing versions, they put something like last stable versions of that software and here is where the pain comes, that beta's work and stable versions don't. It needs probably o couple of months to stabilize or more.
I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu, but I'm sticking with 17.10 (gnome session) because of nvidia-prime which I kind of fixed myself. In general I prefer anything but Ubuntu. I've often found that it needs more work for my needs than other distro's, and new unexpected bugs are terrible even on LTS's. My guess is that mixing old and new libraries is a terrible choice on long term.

The best way to use Ubuntu LTS releases is to stick with the previous LTS until the .1 release arrives (Ubuntu 18.04.1). To be honest, there really isn't much that can't be done with Ubuntu 16.04. Even the kernel has been updated on 16.04 to keep up with newer hardware. Having said that, I have personally found 18.04 to be the least glitchy release I've seen in a while. My guess is you happen to have a hardware config that hasn't been adequetly tested yet. Report the bugs and they will get fixed.

Do you think it has anything to do with Ubuntu dropping unity and going with Gnome? That's the only major change with the new release over the other spins. It's the only thing I could think of not really diving into the issue myself.

My dual boot Dell Precision is running Ubuntu 18.04 quite well. My wife's kitchen PC was updated from 16.04 to 18.04 with no odd issues. One is Intel the other AMD, both work nicely. Replaced Win-10 in my HP Split X2 because Win-10 was acting improperly, Ubuntu runs perfectly. Tried a live USB of Ubuntu 18.04 in a rescued older laptop and installed it for a test of the platform, all worked right.

I wonder if the installation issues that you have been experiencing with regular Ubuntu has anything to do with the memory leak in GNOME, that they haven't gotten around to fixing yet. Thanks for the heads-up! I guess I will try the MATE version instead.

I gotta get a laptop for college, found decent hardware for incredible money, but it comes with an unspecied Linux distro. I mainly do web browsing, and light gaming from time to time , but i will have to use apps like Word or Excel ocasionally. Do you recommend i keep the Linux or just pirate Windows?

    • @AJReissig
      @AJReissig  6 років тому

I don't like Windows and will go to great lengths to avoid using it. For a majority of people, a linux distribution has all of the tools they need. You mentioned excel and word; if you simply need a word processor and spreadsheet program, use LibreOffice which is an open source (and free) office suite. If you have to have word/excel, you can install Microsoft Office using a tool called PlayonLinux (here is a video I made explaining how ua-cam.com/video/f0DiH054-1I/v-deo.html ).

Sounds like you had gnome-only problems. The big trouble with new gnome is that extension workspace-to-dock crashes on startup. Delete it from down under ~/.local and retry. I had to log into Unity to do that, however. This is on upgrade, obviously.
There are newer (fixed?) versions of that extension. I had a fine but older version --- death!

It also might be worth trying Debian. Ubuntu takes a snapshot of Debian's Unstable branch every 6 months at the start of their dev cycle to clean up. I have used Debian's Testing branch on my desktops and laptops for years and had minimal problems, usually worked out in less than a week with regular updates. For servers, I use Debian stable for the reliability.
I know that Debian isn't known for their speedy development, but they are much better than before, and using Testing makes life SO much nicer for the Desktop experience. For example, I have had the same "install" of Debian on my desktop for the last 4 years, covering 3 major releases (Wheezy - 7, Jessie - 8, and Stretch - 9) with continuous upgrades very much in the vein of an Arch Linux. The only recent complaint I have is that Debian Testing isn't receiving the newer versions of Firefox until the new ESR version drops, so the built-in version doesn't have the newer Quantum features, although you can selectively install it from Unstable if you wish to do so early.

I hope they get this fixed along with the issues you are having.

Ubuntu 18.04 is a crash & burn on my sacrificial netbook. Something is messed up between display drivers & Gnome meaning that it never boots cleanly. I get to a certain point just after the "Gnome starting" log message, then I get a cursor overlaid over the boot messages, and it goes no further.
The only way to get the thing even vaguely usable is to come up in repair mode, select "enable network", and then when that locks, hit Ctrl&c, at which point it completes booting and gets me to the desktop, albeit with the graphics messed up (low resolution and wrong aspect ratio), plus it runs like a sloth on valium.
I have reinstalled video drivers, tried to pull in a different desktop, all to no avail.
It's an old Dell Inspiron 10 with Intel on-board video .
Now, I expect my wifi to be screwed up, that comes wit the Linux territory.
I suspect that nobody who's developing it is using older hardware. I use Ubuntu to keep my older machines usable. I suspect that a lot of the Linux community does too.

Note: Version Ubuntu 18.04 only --- UEFI hardware on "POST" will not accept GRUB. You have to temporarily allow UEFI on advanced Bios settings (Sabertooth Motherboard) Start up Ubuntu on the trying Ubunto mode. And click on the hard drive icon. Click on the hard drive THAT YOU ARE INSTALLING Icon. Choose to format it with the Ext4. Then go to "permanently" install the OS. This will get you past the UEFI rejection of GRUB. You can kill UEFI next cold boot by going back into the Bios screen - 'My computer is Del or F2 - and disable UEFI from there. Save and exit.

Sorry to hear you had so many issues with it, I've read that other ppl had it too, but for me personally it works really well, I had issues with 16.04, but this release, everything just works, so it might be hardware compatibility? I don't know, but you have the point there, these issues should not be present on LTS release.. especially when Ubuntu is being promoted as easy to use and stable distro.

I, too, had problems with upgrading to 18.04 on more than one box (a Dell Inspiron from 2009, and an HP 2000 Notebook). There were glitches in the upgrade process, and, upon rebooting after upgrade, both boxes crashed. Soooooo, I downloaded the .iso file, and burned it onto one of my USB drives. The bad news is that I could not use the flash drive to upgrade--on either box. I had to do a clean wipe and install . The good news is that the clean wipe and install went flawlessly. By the by, in other good news, the live .iso also works flawlessly.
I also have an Acer Aspire One to upgrade. I suspect that I'll have problems since I did previous upgrades using the 32-bit versions of Ubuntu. I think I'll end up upgrading to Lubuntu 18.04, most likely with a clean install.

I had crashing whenever trying to use Wayland, while Fedora was perfectly stable. The thing stopping me from switching to Linux is the lack of good per monitor display scaling like Windows 10 has. Wayland is getting there, but still needs some work to get it right. If there was a way to do a virtual resolution in Wayland to have it treat the 1080p monitor as 4k it'd be great, but I don't see any way to do that. I also hate Gnome now. The file manager is terrible due to not being able to type in a path. Overall things just seem way too simplified and lacking of features.

I just upgraded my son's PC from regular Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04. While 17.04 to 17.10 already was a shaky experience with glitches here and there, the upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04 is a disaster. Nvidia proprietary drivers aren't working - it loads the Nouveau driver. Then I did a manual installation of proprietary driver 396.18 only to get a blinking screen after reboot. There's a script just after grub that waits for like 2 minutes until it "gives up" making the boot process a 3 minutes long torture. I am not going to waste my time fixing this. I will purge the proprietary nvidia driver and re-enable Nouveau. Then I'll do a data backup and I will install Kubuntu or any other desktop Linux.
I think Canonical pulled the plug on Desktop Linux - they just don't seem to care anymore (see Shuttleworth interview). Because had they tested it, they would have known they can't release that version. Really strange communication behavior by Canonical and lack of leadership. If they decided to do server and IOT only in future, why didn't they tell us bluntly?
Why bother and release a faulty LTS desktop release? Leave it to the guys that do Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Mate, Elementary and so on would be perfectly ok.

Hey, I had the same issues, here are my findings:
1] For purple/orange screen of death,
It's a GDM issue. The current workaround to login is to wait anywhere from 5 to 15min for login to fail, then click cancel and click again on your user and enter the pass again and click enter.
The issue is known and has been filed here: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/227
    2] For simple screen recorder
When in GDM choose to login into gnome with X server instead of Wayland since afaik SSR doesn't have Wayland support.

I can understand you're frustration with 18.04 but just remember that you can always go back to 17.04, and sure that might defeat the whole point of going to 18.04. I think it's just important to remember that this is the first LTS version in a while going back to GNOME, so granted some things are bound to be buggy off the bat with the first GNOME version

17.04 isn't supported anymore. You could use 17.10 and only upgrade once 18.02.1 is released, for instance.

I upgraded my 16.04 to 18.04 and have regretted that decision. My CPU usage has been running at 100% ever since. I was forced to do a clean install and still the same thing. No updates are available. Looks like I have to live with the problem and hopefully the next kernel updates will fix the problem.

Same experience here. 18.04 LTS is slow, didn't support my gpu correctly, issues with audio, stuttering performance.
Just finished the 16.04 LTS install.
Happy to be back. Also prefer the startup screen and Unity over Gnome. I know this could be changed, but I rather have an out of the box solution.

Making my video on Ubuntu 18.04 and wow! got the same as you A.J, I installed the snap communitheme and tried logging in with that, not sure if that was the cause or not, will try a new install. There are a lot of bugs. I did the same thing as well. The problem is with the Wayland. Just disable the wayland for gdm3 and it was fixed for me. I read a lot on this thing and everyone including Arch, fedora that are on GNOME shell 3.28.1 is facing the same issue. Remember, This version is kinda bleeding edge and too unstable for the LTS release.

AJ your problem your having is the same with me sadly was ready to go and got everything I wanted to install and rebooted after my first updates and then I go to log in the only difference between yours and mine is it locks up on a purple screen with just a cursor but if I click at the top right I get the pull-down menu for brightness and shutdown but that's it. I was ready to go I love Gnome and that's the desktop I use. I hope an update takes place because I don't like Pop OS nor do i want to switch to Arch quite yet.

I had a problem with it installing on my disks and the UEFI but easy to fix, maybe my mistake dont know. But what happened next was terrible. I had a 4 monitor setup working on 17.10 and even reducing to 3 monitors didn't work. Had to change my NVidia 950GTX to a AMD HD7850. And there i get tons of problems with monitor detection on the default Gnome Desktop. Have to use the monitor settings on all power ups. This can't be the solution. Now a month later we already have 3 updates to 18.10. Canonical really don't give a shit anymore about the Desktop - thanks Mark, i understand now.

It's horrible. 'minimal' wouldnt install for me. The full install is slow to boot. The software center is like a Moscow bread shop in 1982. The only emacs i can find (on the gui or in the cli) is emacs-tealeg (whatever the heck that means). It's the snap. I install that. The created application shortcut won't work. Wrong path. There is no option to change the path, no properties option on a right click. No worries, I'll add it to my favourites bar. No, there is no 'add to favourites' option. Create a desktop icon? you guessed it... This involves creating a .desktop file and that didn't work anyway. I run it from the cli, that works but it ties up the terminal (i can use the shell in emacs, i know). It is a basic requirement of a desktop that you can create shortcuts of your applications or add them to your favourites. Maybe it's a snapd thing, maybe its an issue with emacs-tealeg. I don't know. I'm no expert, but I'm no newbie either... 18.04 for me has been a bad experience so far

18.04 is the worst upgrade I have ever done.. 17.10 was bad.. but this one basically has killed my system.
Simple tools like gedit can only run properly with sudo else it screen refresh fails (basically there is no refresh). Same happens with other tools like meld etc.
    Performance sucks. Everything feels slow.
Try taking backup !! Poor thing couldn't copy couple hundred gigs in a day.. basically had to kill it ..
Forget abt using network folders. Better copy to a pendrive n rush around to move data.
This is one hell of a mess.

Yes I had the orange screen of death and what I found was that was on my dual monitor systems. What it did, God help us, was switch my primary monitor to the secondary and even if I change the config. in devices, at post it changes back and when I try logging in after "The Fix" It still refuses to use my primary monitor even if the secondary is turned off then good luck logging in!
I still can only log-in using my secondary monitor, that is also use by my grand-kids for games and movies!
    It's a royal PAIN!

When I installed Ubuntu 18.04 I also got it stuck on that orange screen, It booted up the second time, but there is some issue with Powerline module that I installed a few versions back for my terminal sessions. I haven't taken the time yet to research it out and see what I need to do, I am thinking just uninstall Powerline and relinstall it should work. We'll see. Oh! and I am having some issues with fonts in Discord Server not rendering properly. Lot's of artifacts in it. I know there was a work around about downgrading one of the libraries to a previous version and it fixes the problem. Those seem to be the only things I have had issue with lately. SimpleScreenRecorder is working for me with H.264 using the UA-cam profile.
