Five-door hot-hatch comparison : Volkswagen Golf GTI v Peugeot 308 GT v Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The Volkswagen Golf GTI has long been the preeminent hot-hatch for keen drivers. But what if you’re after a European small car with a little extra spice, that isn’t the Volkswagen? What are some alternatives? And how close can they get to the benchmark GTI?
Taking on the Volkswagen Golf GTI today, we have the Peugeot 308 GT and Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV.
And here with us is Alistair - who contacted CarAdvice asking, “If you don’t want to follow the GTI crowd, what other sporty hatchbacks are worth a look?”
-
Paul: So tell us, why don’t you want a Golf GTI?
Alistair: Nothing against the Golf at all. I think it’s a great car. But I used to have a Peugeot 205 GTI and I’ve always had a soft spot for the Italian marques. I want something a little different but also something that can comfortably accommodate myself, the wife and my little one Harry, who’s three.
Paul: Fair enough. Right, well let’s kick things off with the Golf…
Paul: Ah, tartan seats and a golf ball-style gear knob. It’s not hard to tell that you’re in a Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Starting at $41,990, the six-speed manual Golf GTI gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 162kW and 350Nm.
Paul: You’ve got really premium materials and this 5.8-inch touchscreen with sat-nav. The GTI also gets what’s called Driver Chassis Control - which let’s you choose between five different driving modes for the engine, steering and suspension.
Paul: Should we try out the Peugeot?
Paul: It is yeah. Now, the 308 GT is the same price as the GTI but has a smaller capacity engine, putting out less power and less torque.
It claims 7.5 seconds 0-100km/h - which is a full second slower than the Golf - but it betters the GTI on claimed fuel consumption by almost 10 per cent.
Alistair: …And it’s nice in here. The seats are good, the space is good and it looks like there’s plenty of room in the back for my little boy and his child seat.
Paul: You also have a bigger boot than the Golf and there’s this fairly massive 9.7-inch colour touchscreen that looks after all of your navigation, entertainment and climate controls as well as vehicle information. Very cool and it means a much cleaner centre stack here.
Paul: Now while all the cars here have five doors and drink 98-octane premium unleaded, the little Alfa - with its engine and gearbox pinched from the rear-wheel-drive 4C - is the fastest and most powerful of the lot.
Alistair: And again, very different from the Golf in here.
Paul: Yeah. It is a fraction dearer than the GTI but you get these cool bucket seats and this in-dash 6.5-inch touchscreen. Unfortunately you also have to physically turn the key to start it up and this flat-bottom wheel feels huge compared to the one in the Peugeot.
Paul: While that was interesting, we are at the track. So while Alistair sizes up the backseats, we’re going to set some lap times with the help of CarAdvice’s very own tame, racing…driver… No?
Dave: No. Just gimmie the keys Paul...
-
Paul: So comfort, price and features are all important, but we want to know the times. Alistair…?
Alistair: Yeah no worries. Golf GTI - Best lap - 1min 7sec.
Alistair: Just ahead of the Golf with a best time of 1min 6sec… the Alfa Romeo…
Paul: Wow, so how far behind was the Peugeot?
Alistair: Only 1 second behind the Golf, the Peugeot’s best lap was 1min 8sec.
Paul: So the more expensive Alfa Romeo was faster than the Golf GTI around the track but you weren’t sold on its rear seat space. The Peugeot was the slowest of the three but you liked the styling and its winning space and boot capacity. And of course, there’s still the Golf GTI.
So, do you still not want a Golf? (laughs)
Alistair: (Laughs) I really like the Golf and there’s no doubting it does most things well. But the Alfa really impressed me around the track and the Peugeot really impressed me off the track.
It’s a tough call, but I think I might have to go with the Golf…
Paul: So there you have it.

I own a giulietta. Friend of mine said the golf looks better. He is no longer a friend of mine.
for good reason
I own the 308 gti. And though I could of owned either three I think the giulietta is the best looking. But I just wanted a Peugeot so much if my only Peugeot ever. I had a Fiat bravo sport and the inside shared similarities in parts used so if felt like it was the same car. That was my only reason against the giulietta that I so keenly wanted.
I've had VWs and Peugeots, but nothing compares to an Alfa. My Guilietta is my fourth Alfa, and I suspect I'll stick to the brand ...I love it
I have a Golf. I went to dinner at a friend's house once, and again three months later - at which stage there was an Alfa Giulietta in the driveway. I never went back, pretentious people.
@@joebloggs2312 😂😂😂😂I bought one yesterday. 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for this guys, so many reviewers forget there are other vehicle manufacturers out there so we only get to see the same cars over and over again. Great work.
Stuart Holtom - Cheers Stuart, we always appreciate the feedback.
Alfa Giulietta QV for the win. Quick, stunning, great sound. For those who don't wish to run with the pack..
please read the instruction manual of the car before reviewing it. 308 top of the steering wheel needs to be set the position under the cluster to see. not seeing through the wheel like other cars. shame on you review guys.
It should be adjusted so its confy to drive!
Would have loved to hear which car Dave actually enjoyed driving around the track. Track times, for me, are less important than the actual fun factor or drive experience on the daily.
I honestly think you can't go wrong with either the Alfa or Golf.
I owned a Giulietta QV some years back - I havent driven a Golf GTI yet, but do now own both an Audi S3 and a Skoda Octavia RS245 (which is effectively a heavier, less aggressive GTI).
I dont think the Skoda is any quicker then the Giulietta was - they are pretty close. Giulietta felt a bit more aggressive uder acceleration, but the issue with that Alfa motor is that it has a very narrow bandwidth - it's got very noticable turbo lag down low and it dies of very quick in the top end, so it really only feels like it's pulling from 2,500 RPM to about 4,500 RPM, and outside of that band if feels like its doing nothing. This means you really need to change gear a lot. I had the manual and found it quite frustrating when navigating carparks or when going up steep hills because of that turbo lag requiring you to constantly drop a gear. The Skoda feels much more linear in it's power delivery - it pulls fairly strong even from 1800 RPM or so and right up to 6,000 RPM. To be fair though the Skoda is a DSG also, so that probably helps - if I bought the Giulietta again I would probably get it in TCT mode because it would be more drivable in those low speed / high incline type scenarios.
And it's a shame to say that because the Giulietta manual actually is really nice - quick, short throw shift and very precise. The clutch is a bit touchy/sensitive though and can take a lot of getting used to, especially for hill starts, etc.
As far as handling goes I thing the Skoda is more stable in high speed bends, which seemed to be the weakness of the Giulietta (it would feel a but unstable in the rear end at times). With some light damper/suspenson mods and the TCT gearbox I could imagine the Giulietta being a pretty fantastic little thing to drive...and to be fair the Skoda I'm comparing it against is a 2019 model, so abou 5 years newere then my Giulietta was.
One thing that the Giulietta did impress with was refinement. You dont really expect to hear this about an alfa, but it was actually a very solid feeling car. Very smooth, quiet and refined and it was pretty good over bumps too. I think it was just as smooth and refined in every way as the Skoda, though the Skoda does have some better build quality and material quality - albeit the difference isn't as great as some reviewers would like to have you believe. The S3 is obviously a big step up in quality and performance, but I won't even compare that because it's obviously a totally different class of car.
It's a shame...
You should compare Peugeot 308 GTi NOT GT version ! ! ! ! !
308 GTi has mechanical differential, 308 GTi will destry Golf GTi and Alfa QV on track.
1st - The VW would fight back with the Golf R, so the GTI wouldn't do you much good. Alfa would be behind though as they have yet to introduce a compact engine with higher HP.
2nd - It would be a different engine tier, it wouldn't be a fair comparison, the Golf GTI, Alfa QV and Peugeot GT are in the same tier and insurance group, so the difference would be which company did a better job in designing their cars overall.
the tamed racing driver part was hilarious, good job.
Fuck the golf
It's not fair...
That Alfa is 4wd...
But this golf is not 4wd...
You cannot compare any 4wd to a fwd car...
Compare "golf r" with that QV...
alfa is not 4wd
All 3 cars are front wheel drive
nice review. So the Alfa was the most powerful, the quickest and the fastest around your track. It also had the best sound and was arguably the better looking... it surely makes sense that the golf won...
Because Alfa Romeo believes adults are all 2ft tall and pedal spacing is for sissies. Golf is the best all rounder by a mile. Alfa is fun, for sure - but I'm not going to buy a Giulietta for a weekend drive.
JustifyJustin shut up fanboy

Idiots. When someone say that the Golf is a benchmark it immediately discredit himself.
Giulietta QV all day.
ALFA Definitely.
Just bought the Alfa Guilietta QV and absolutely love it. I fell in love with the engine note and have loved every minute of driving it!

1. Alfa
2. Peugeot
3. Golf
So why do a comparison where the alfa beats the other Cars in noise speed handling and looks if you are biased upfront. The golf loses but still wins. Stop doing this silly tests!!
+aam voor Becauce "Nazi-cars" (VW & Ford) are the favorite cars no matter what ...
Would have taken the Peugeot - but I also own a 208 :)
Its always the same thing, the golf always wins.
Its like some friends of mine when they bought cars and asked them why they bought a golf, well even without knowing the others they just said: - well men its a golf, its the best.
@@fgt78 Everyone forgetting something, they used a 308 GT, they should have waited for the GTi to come out and then done the review, coz the GT is not in the same segment as the Golf GTI
Alfa Romeo for ever!!!
Golf boring... Alfa exciting...Alfa winner!!!
Alfa Romeo ;-)
alfa rules
Alfa Romeo forever!
Alfa rules!
+g00dfeeling yes and let's not forget how the Italian car is gonna break down after two weeks!
+ELIE HOBEIKA I'm driving Alfas almost ten years. Never had that experience.
+ELIE HOBEIKA yes, and let's not forget the myth that the German car won't. And then have a look who actually put their money where their mouth is and back up the reliability claims with some actual warranty.
+ELIE HOBEIKA ugh...we have had 3 vws. all were unreliable heaps.
I have had 3 Alfa's and not a single one has ever let me down.
go figure.
Volkswagen the winner?? What a boring choice. Alfa rules.
Probably the Golf GTI still a better all-rounder, but VAG products... Yes, except for true Porsches (911, Cayman/Boxster and the limited-edition hypercars). Even Lamborghinis have lost part of their wild charme after their company has been purchased by Volkswagen, except for the Murcielago that also was the last one to fit the V12 Ferruccio Lamborghini designed himself: most VAG products have some boringness in them. And that not just a problem of halo: they always also feel not to be as much as proficient as their direct competitors in fact of driving.
What they do the best is to sell exactly what most appeals to the majority of the market: comfortable "furnitures" to go to A to Z in safety and comfort. That's no bad, but if we are talking about driving i wouldn't go for the Golf...
Alfa everytime the QV is a great car the golf well its just another golf isnt it, typical Joe Average there going for the safe option
Oh I thought this was an advert for the Golf GTI. Just seen its a review channel.
Daspo0ks Just to add to this - to make this "review" fair - pick equal cars. Putting the Ford Focus ST against a Golf GTI would have made more sense.
love my alfa... no one beats the sound
Alfa the best
FUCK VW! ALFA RULEZ! #forza
VW best car in Europe fuck Alfa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alfa romeo tutta la vita
golf is just boring to look at... you see them everywhere
VW for those who just want to own something mundane, when you want to show the world you are conformist. Maybe it is slightly better than the rest on paper but cars are more emotive than just buying a fridge or a microwave. And yes I'm an Alfisti...
Aaah... Giulietta is not a car... It’s an emotion! A very strong one! I hope we see a new one in the near future... to DRIVE US CRAZY!!!
those golf seats are probably one of the most horrific things mankind has ever made, atleast like top 3
Hmmm comparing a CTC gearbox to a manual VW? Both should have been manual or the VW should have had a DSG.
Giulietta ftw tho, proud owner over here ;-)
***** - we were not able to secure a manual Giulietta QV for this test - but its worth noting, that the manual has the pre-update engine so has less power than the TCT car.
+CarAdvice.com.au Not only that GTI has better Dual clutch gearbox too.
comparing 308 GT with Golf GTI on performance basis and saying that Golf is "better hot hatch" is rather sensles... of course it is beter, cause it has more powerful engine and it has a drivetrain and setup that suit a proper GTI, while Pug is just a bit more "capable top spec" model.... it is like comparing Mini Cooper with JCW and "discoverig" that JCW is "better"
and about Pug's "obstructing" steering wheel... I'm 1.72cm tall (slightly over 5ft7in) and I had no problem viewing it's instrument table over the steering wheel....so, i find this something like those flowers on the dash of first new Beetle... somebody stock them there in the first test and then everybody repeated that endlessly in every test after that...
Mirko Zlikovski This wasn't just a performance comparison, Mirko. The performance test formed part of the comparison, but wasn't the only deciding factor. The 308 GT was in here as it was identical in price to the Golf GTI. We are a huge fan of the 308 GT and think that come the 308 GTi, the Golf GTI will have a big challenge on its hands.
Please learn to set the driving position on a Peugeot (dials above wheel) before saying you can´t see the dials... that was rather stupid. ! I'm 1.82m, my wife is 1.58 and we both found a suitable position in the car...
Golf slow steering ratio makes this car horrible to drive although it has a nice chassis. Maybe it is faster than the Alfa when you drive it on the edge, however the everyday feel is on a different level. Compared to Giulietta it feels like you race a dead pig. Golf is a benchmark only in sales, that should be said.
Very bad comparison !
The 308 GT is not a sports car, why confront with the most powerful sports models? It's ridiculous!
Take the new Peugeot 308 GTI, repeat the comparison ... we will laugh!
Learned to adjuste the stearing wheel...
It"s defenetely set to high here. The thing is you can't take the top of the steering wheel as a reference, but the center.
I've been in the 208 and the 308 and I had a lot of space between the steering wheel and the dash.
It depends on the height of the driver too. Some of us in the CA office like the size and position of the 308 wheel - but we are all different heights.
CarAdvice.com.au you guys know that the seat can also go up and down right? just adjust it, and the tester didn't look like a small guy...
rui518 I had the 308 for some days too and I love the small steering wheel.
The hight of the driver is no problem in this car.
the problem is when you want to sit very low in it.
Golf= boring
Peugeot = interesting
Alfa= soul/fun/winner!
Golf looks very dated in terms of design :) Germans have never been much of a designers.
Fun fact, it was an italian that designed the original golf.
Been driving 208, the small steering wheel is supposed to be below the speedo display. I got it wrong first time too, but once you are used to it, it is awesome.
"I have a soft spot for peugeots..." (instantly loses all credibility)
Hi Oswald - not in Australia. All of these cars have a list price within $10 of each other. The Peugeot and Volkswagen are $41,990 and the Alfa is $42,000 - (MSRP)
So the alfa wins the lap tests...then the looks, power, noise, design,....what did the golf win....nothing......yet it placed first! The "decision" is frankly rubbish. I've a 2018 Giulietta Supersport in misano blue and a bmw 220 msport coupe in estoril blue...yeh i love blue...but i love cars that perform/drive/grab your heart/are exclusive blue......they are both diesel...but they absolutely fly with massive torque.......i pick one each morning.....no favourite....but no golf gti.....because gti is too generic, bland, lacking design or flair...yes its got a good engine but the rest is....yawn....and predictable. And i did have a passat 2.0t petrol turbo sport 197bhp 2006 that i loved...but it never pretended to be a great car but it was..... a wolf in sheep's clothing....golf.....blah! Buy a bmw 2 coupe for handling but love a giulietta for being that bit different with handling ....and fun....and makes u smile on the inside....and misano blue is just a great colour, dark alloys, red spiltter, super stereo, the cockpit.....be yourself and get one....who cares. BTW the 220d coupe is a complete cracker too. Grin........
take the 308 GTI an we'll see who wins.
I always thought that the Golf was the fastest, but I bought a Giulietta because it's an Alfa Romeo and now I'm glad knowing that the Golf is now second best. The Peugeot's steering wheel is too small and the majority of French cars are being driven by slow, useless drivers.
The car advise team work for VW!!!
We have to admit that though we the viewers picks the alpha. It wasn’t the reviewers choice. It was the guest. The guy sat in all 3 and felt like the golf was for him. I respect that. Unfortunately for us the viewer it wasn’t a 308 gti rather than the gt. maybe he’s of been picking that. So I’m not mad at him. But he is wrong though.
Why not wait for the Peugeot GTI for this comparison? This way, it will be fair for all 3 cars. You make it look like the Peugeot lost here, but this is not true!
vvw golf gti : 220hp 33750€pug 308 gt : 205hp 30850€a giulietta qv : 240hp 34600€Considering price and equipment and timelap, the golf definitely lost. Save money take the pug, or pay for the winner : alpha.
You can't compare this Peugeot 308 GT when there is a proper GTI coming out soon with the 270bhp RCZ R engine in it.
Peugeot are also producing a 493bhp hybrid version of the 308 with 3 engines 😏
Calam Stuart hybrid R is just a concept/prototype right?
+rui518 Yes, but it will be produced in limited series! ^^
DurianObried
really? were did you ear that? lets be honest Peugeot don't usually make prototypes...
+rui518 A long time ago: 206cc was a prototype ... Peugeot did.
RCZ was a prototype ...Peugeot did.
For the 308 R hybrid, Peugeot is currently studying automotive market to find interrested customers and especially at what price.
The prototype is fully functional and can be produced as such.
We will have the final answer when the "normal" 308 will be restyled.
But one thing is sure, Peugeot wants to produce this 308, because Carlos Tavares (the boss) wants a radical sport in its range.
DurianObried
you could be right, Tavares wants a lot of things and he has vision but the board needs to back him...
GolF GTI is the prob the best of the the three considering all aspects for everyday use, but if I'm buying one, I'd end up in the Alfa showroom despite knowing its drawbacks
when it comes to comfort and dayli usage the golf wins but if you want something special you should take the alfa btw. i drive a tuned Gulietta qv and love it before this i drove a alfa 156 ti but i still think golfs are good cars as well just in a other way
OK so alfa looks the best, sounds the best, it is fastest. why golf is the winner?
Alfa
ops, giulietta wins...
I love Alfa, but I believe when they have something perfect they do bad things to the car on purpose, 4:23 no reversing camera .... I don´t use it but in a premium car is almost like no radio. Why Alfa does those stupid things here and there?
Simply because the Giulietta is a car from 2010, reversing camera's weren't a major thing back then.

Giulietta wins.
I meant TCT gearbox!
Very vw biased, vw are not the car brand they used to be!! They have become very unreliable in recent years. And you cannot compare the golf and the Peugeot when the golf has a much bigger engine, wait until the 308 GTi comes out and compare them. And in my opinion the golf is the most bland of the 3. It also has the worst quality interior of the three! I would take the pug over them all any day.
I have heard nothing but bad reports about new vw models in Ireland, I have owned 2 new 2012-2013 passats/ and a golf and had problems with all in the first 5months only one problem was covered under warranty, so I would not be recommending!... And lots of bad reports on car buyer websites etc..
That's good imm glad for you, many years of happy safe motoring!
+MrThePrivateer it's pretty well known by now that VW are chronically unreliable. look good when new but fall apart rapidly and expensive and difficult to repair.
MrThePrivateer That is just not true. The First Generation Touareg is one of the worst cars ever built. Every part can fail at any minute. Every single variation of the Passat is ticking time bomb. My friends 99 Passat has a new problem every week and he does all the servicing himself. Literally every part is prone to failure. My 1998 Alfa 156 V6 literally runs faultlessly in comparison and that is an Alfa FFS. My Subaru is utterly bulletproof. Our Landcruiser is nigh on indestructible.
2 of my friends had Gold Mk4s as their first cars in college. Again, every week they had new problems. My dads brand new Mk2 Golf used to regularly implode and he promptly sold it. Not one of those cars I have mentioned was "improperly" serviced. VWs are soft cars made from fragile components. Audis are more premium and even more fragile.
Most VW owners seem to keep buying them despite unreliability. Cult of VW. I think people who have never owned anything else genuinely think that they are as good as any car when in reality they break constantly.
+MrThePrivateer the 2 wv's I owned got serviced by the main dealer every time it needed it and in some cases before it needed it as I thought it might make it a little more reliable but the engine was not the problem I only had one engine fault in my Passat and that was it! The engines are not to bad it's the electrics that seem to be the problem. I have rid of my vws and bought a 308 gt and find it a lot better. My neighbour bought a golf a few months ago and asked me why I had changed it after only 9 months. When I told him why I had changed it he told me he had lots of problems too, so defiantly not just my vw's. However I don't know about the golf gti etc as I don't know anyone who has new ones! The old golf was such a good car, it's a pity vw have let us all down!!
Just drove the Alfa Giulietta and it is very very nice
Sure, the Volkswagen might be the cleanest of all these three. But that's the exactly the problem with it. It's too clean. Plus the driving assist can't be turned off to 100% like with the Alfa Romeo, Renault Sport, Peugeot, DS or Ford which is very sad. It's too smooth, there's almost no resistance you have to fight against, and that's the most fun part when driving a sports car. To tame the beast💯
While the Volkswagen is the cleanest,
The Peugeot is the most nostalgic,
The Alfa Romeo is as always the most emotional though.
So everything is as it should be.
Giulietta's powerplant is only 1750 ccm compared to a 2L GTI. But of course the Alfa wins. In any aspect. Gti's seats are terrible, looks like some underwear from 1910, and the mouse-movie lcd is from a '90's quartz game. And after that, the Gti is your winner. WTF?!? Leave the VW propaganda and do some proper comparisons. Because there are 3 things that don't exists: dwarfs, elves and the fucking german reliability.
They have not given a single reason why the GTI should win except it is more spacious in the back. And yet it wins? Like wtf mate you are on some good drugs
Alfa 👍
First Fiat Bravo was far more better than Golf 6 and a hot looking car. Now Alfa Romeo Giulietta is far more better than the boring Golf 7 and is way too hot. It sucks that VW pays these reviews for their awful cars.
