    Proud to say that my father's oldest brother Aston Karl Aiken, a Flying officer with RAF 107 squadron was navigator on the daylight attack on the SS barracks in the chateau on 2 August 1944. Sadly just 6 days later he and his Canadian pilot F/O William Taylor died during an attack at night on railway siding in the Marne district. Wonderful to see the attack on the barracks and to hear the sounds some of which he must have heard. Thanks you for restoring the video. I hope you see how valuable these old wartime videos are to my family. I was named in his honour after the war.

      Karl - condolences to your family. Your uncle was a very brave man. I cannot image how he and his friends did what they did and they were so young. Rest in Peace.

      So many Airmen lost their lives in action. It must have been heartbreaking to your father and your parents to hear of his death. And so many died as well. Can’t imagine what it does to a country.

    My father's brother F/O Aston Karl Aiken, navigator with RAF 107 squadron , originally from Kingston , Jamaica, took place on the 30th July raid on the French chateau housing U-boat crews. His pilot was Canadian F/O William Taylor, of Saskatchewan, Canada. Sadly, just 9 days later they were both killed in action on a night-time raid on a railway rolling stock at railway siding near Connantre, east of Paris. They both are buried side by side in a village cemetery in Connantre, Marne, France. I was named Karl in his honour after the war. My uncle was only 24 yrs old.

    My Great Uncle was a Beaufighter & Mosquito Pilot ( Rank Sgt P/O A ) - ( also
    flying for RAAF No 456 Mosquito Squadron on Night Fighters/Intruders out
    of RAF 10 and 11 Group in late 1943-44 ) - in RAF No 46 Squadron and
    RAF 108 Sqd in the North African campaign he was one of 4 Australians
    in a Unit. No 46 & 108 Sqd flew Night Fighter patrols over Egypt, Libya,
    Malta, Greece and the Aegean generally. His personal file shows the
    destruction of Ships, Trains, motor vehicles and a Heinkel HE. 111 among
    other victims. Through 1943-44, flying out of an airfield in Athens -
    after the HE. 111 was intercepted and destroyed - records state his Beau
    harassed a German retreat by strafing Railway and Motor Transport
    following this up with nightly 'Intruder Missions' over the wider Aegean
    ( Salonika, Crete, Rhodes, Melos, Leros and Cos ) - Night Fighter Pilots were
    cut from a particular cloth - Gods bless them all!

    Interesting that the sound of the explosions occur at the same time as we see them, even though the aircraft are mikes away. I think these cameras had no sound and it was all dubbed in.

    At about 8:50 he says that Typhoons flew some 31000 sorties, firing 11000 rockets. I guess that means that they weren't all carrying rockets but it's an interesting number. I think that when they did they carried 8, and I don't suppose they often brought any back so that suggests only about 1 or 2 of the 31 thousand were rocket sorties.

    • @rdjhardy

      We had a 22000 lb bomb too. Both designed by Barnes Wallis designed to cause damage by seismic shock.

    • @thisnicklldo
      @thisnicklldo 8 років тому +3

      That was 'Tallboy'. Delivered by 617 Squadron (the 'Dambusters') in Lancs fitted out for the big bombs. This raid is described in one of the books on 617 (I think the actual book 'The Dambusters') and I think they moved the roofs around a bit but couldn't fully put the U-Boat pens out of action. Really tough target. Though by the then the VLR Liberators and coastal command had basically won the U-boat war.

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 7 років тому +2

      thisnicklldo I have "The Dam Busters". One of the photos shows a hole in the roof of one of the U-Boat pens - the Tallboy bomb had bored through 20 feet of reinforced concrete and exploded inside the pen.

    • @mushmorant9253
      @mushmorant9253 6 років тому +2

      How many aircraft did the USAAF lose trying to take out U boat pens with 500-2000 lb GP bombs in daylight raids? Kind of silly to expect such small bombs to do significant damage to reinforced concrete of that thickness don't you think? Same story when the USAAF was attempting to knock out the underground fortresses at Metz in support of the U.S. 3rd Army in the fall of 1944.

    • @SvenTviking
      @SvenTviking 5 років тому +3

      rdjhardy The principle was that the bomb landed next to the target and detonated deep underground, Wallis intended to have them dropped from 40,000 ft. The explosion would open up a large underground void or camouflet which would collapse, the large target, power stations, bridges etc, would then fall into the hole.

  • @rescuepetsrule6842
    @rescuepetsrule6842 2 роки тому +1

    Some good shooting there, but if you look at aerial pics after a bombing raid, you can see that far more missed- simply craters in empty areas. Nobody wanted to have the 'miss' rate known, for obvious reasons, but some claim at least 75% of all bombs dropped missed. Good thing it only took 1 or 2 in the right spots, hence the use of so many. Daring flyers-SALUTE!

      Zonos' correct there Rowe, the gun cameras were not fitted with any sound recording equipment and as for the high level bombing sequences there's two points to notice - firstly the sounds of the explosions would have been just dull thuds at that distance which would probably have been drowned out by the drone of the engines filling the plane and secondly, the sounds of the explosions are synchronised with the bombs going off, at that height there would have been several seconds delay between the 'sight and the sound'!

  • @nedflanders8447
    @nedflanders8447 5 років тому +1

    I wonder why they added fake bomb sounds to the music and commentary.
    I could tell they were added because no speed of sound delay from distant explosion.
    Still very nice vids though.

    • @ZenosWarbirds
      @ZenosWarbirds  5 років тому +1

      ned flanders Standard operating procedure in newsreels and documentaries at the time. Sound recording equipment wasn’t carried on bombing missions by combat cameramen. And all gun camera film was silent. SFX were added later to add drama and realism.

    it is interesting to compare the comments made by TWA Flyer and Ticked off. One is respectful and the other is not. We should not assume that all Americans share the same inaccurate and spiteful views of a minority who have ill informed and childish views. Nor should we forget how the UK and USA worked together as allies to finish this terrible war and suffered awful casualties in order to do so.
