Ian Gillan didn't have anything in his ear... they didn't have that kind of stuff back then. He was putting a finger in one ear because it helps singers do two things: (1) hear the sound of the other instruments with the "open" ear and (2) hear their own voice with the "closed" ear. Its a technique used by singers in all genres but, back in the day, was especially useful for rock singers since the instruments/amplifiers were so loud. And, since they were so loud, sometimes singers could sing AND NOT EVEN HEAR THEIR OWN VOICE (or not hear it well). And what is the result of that? The singer could start singing out of tune because, at that point, he's just singing by muscle (and vocal chord memory). Long story short, by putting a finger in his ear, the singer can "hear" the sound of his own voice by the resonance inside his own head and, in that way, sing in tune with the rest of the band. Like you said "It sounded like he was screaming, but it was a quiet scream!" That's because he was in tune with the rest of the band (and also due to the quality of his own voice). Neat, huh?

John Rogers wait... you mean no auto tune and custom in ear monitors?
      The Horror! 😂
Let’s not even get into being skilled at projecting and breath control and using the mic’s proximity effect to skillfully blend the voice (with the band) at the source. MAD VOCAL SKILLS!

That is very interesting thanks I never knew that learn something new everyday right?👌🇱🇷 you know I think I'm gonna try that very idea on the Memphis city bus so I can hear my Farts better over the Blabbermouths plus I can experiment on the right direction/angle or both so I can zero in on the biggest trap I may even employ a megaphone to enhance the sound quality and density 😀 oh I almost forgot maybe I can add some reverb where I can get um (is um in the Webster's dictionary?) to ricochet off the windows or the bus drivers Head kinda sorta like a bankshot shooting pool that way maybe I could land a really juicy one into somebody's side pocket 😀🇱🇷 today they stick their finger in their nose instead that's what it sounds like anyway 😁🇱🇷

These are interesting vocals, you say, and you like the use of the voice as an instrument. If you want to hear some really interesting vocals, I suggest listening to the live performance of "Hocus Pocus" by the Dutch band Focus that was recorded for American TV back in October of 1973. I think the kids will get a kick out of this one: ua-cam.com/video/g4ouPGGLI6Q/v-deo.html And of course probably one of the best examples of using voice as an instrument is the lamenting and soul-stirring vocal on "Great Gig in the Sky" from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album.

Yer back with another rockin' reaction! Wonderful :-) I hope you guys are having a blast in summer camp. Now, my historical and contextual notes:
This band was one of the truly greats, and each member was mega-talented. They are responsible for some of the all-time most memorable guitar riffs (pro tip: **Never** play Smoke on the Water in a guitar shop lol).
The keyboard player was Jon Lord, who was classically trained, and is considered one of the very best ever, rather like Hendrix on guitar. His instrument is the fabled Hammond Organ, an instrument which could be used for both good and evil. Originally intended as an inexpensive and space-saving replacement for church organs, it was one of the very first truly electronic instruments and was often used by purveyors of the most tooth-rotting schmaltz. In fact in the 1950s-70s restaurants would employ players of HOs to entertain the customers, but jazz and blues and rock artists picked up on it and really exploited its nasty growl to express more than Muzak*-like tones.
I can only add that this band is worth looking at further for their live performances; psych-prog-blues-rock at its finest.
Oh, and I wanted to comment a bit on fashion of the era, of which you've seen a bit of by now in more than one video. You'll notice that, up until the early 70's, hair was generally simply grown out with little grooming. You'll also notice that clothes are generally quite colourful, loud and garish. This was a way of rebelling against the strict, grey conformity of the war years up through the 1950s and early 60s. So, they were simply growing it out, not thinking about styling at all, merely intending to make a statement. Then, in the mid 70's hair became subject to the dreaded perm and white afro, eventually morphing into the horrors of the aforementioned mullet. Truly scary times (although we thought it was cool at the time lol)
*The term Muzak originates from the name of a company called Muzak which piped prerecorded music into public commercial spaces like shops, doctor's offices, etc. The music consisted of the most syrupy of popular tunes played by massed string orchestras, truly horrendous stuff. So the word Muzak became synonymous with uber-schmaltzy music in general. As a final footnote, I was in an elevator once in which Muzak's service was employed, and I heard a Muzak-ised version of a Pink Floyd song. I knew then that my youth was officially over **sigh**...

Purple were bigger than Sabbath in the early to mid 1970's. It was probably Ozzy's solo career, and their influence on later bands, that gave the Sabbath legend a boost, and then not until into the 1990's.

Love both. Zep were bigger, no doubt. But Purple were better in my book. A lot tighter than Zep or any other band. Their musicianship was insane. Lots of improvs and jamming while playing live. Zep were great at improvising as well and, in my opinion they had a better stage presence than Purple, that "Star aura" if you know what i mean. Great to see young kids going back to the roots. We may have some good music in the future, let's keep our fingers crossed...

Claire you are absolutely right. A lot of singers back in the day did use their voices as an instrument. You watched Roundabout by YES awhile back. The lead singer Jon Anderson is famous for his orchestral voice, then and still today. YES has been around since 1968 and happens to be my all time favorite band. THE best band on this planet. Jon Anderson THE VOICE. THE MASTER. FOREVER YES!!!🎤🎤🎤

This is from 1970, and what you're seeing is Heavy Metal in its infancy. Deep Purple, Along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, basically invented heavy metal in the late 60's and early 70's. You may have noticed the somewhat stunned look on the faces of the audience. Many people had not heard heavy metal in 1970, and they probably weren't really sure what they were watching and hearing!

The term you are looking for with the high voice is falsetto. There's quite a bit of it in classic rock, especially from this time frame. I wasn't familiar with this Deep Purple song, but they are really good. You should give more of their stuff a try. Side note: I loved the editing by dad in this one. It added something to the video.

If you eventually get to Highway Star you should do the “Made in Japan” version It’s by far the best version but it would be a static video if that’s ok. (it is the way we all took in music when we were young). Studio version very good also but they kick it up several notches live.

Oh and his gorgeous wife with the voice of an angel joined him. Check out "Locked Within The Crystal Ball" or "Under a Violet Moon" by Blackmoore's Night. I really love their stuff.
