I’m a retired welder, now a hobbyist, I got myself a small plasma cutter and I must say it was the best thing I ever did. My little machine is just 30 amps, it runs on 110 and 220 volts. This machine saved me so much time and money it’s not funny. I believe my welding supply retailer regrets selling me that machine cause they’re not selling me any oxygen or acetylene anymore. Never had a chance to use a plasma while earning a living welding but I’m using one now and loving it. Good video Bob.
yep, this IGBT technology in welders, plasma cutters, VFDs has had a transformative effect, along with low-cost, even DIY, CNC tables

Thank You Sir Robert!!!! I'd like to meet you. Your delivery style is the best!!!!
Hi Bob..I just like to say that just watching your videos these past few months has given me such confidence its amazing. My skills has improved exponentially..From beautifull Cape Town,I'm really gratefull.
mstemmet agreed, Bob's style of sharing info and techniques has helped me too. A great teacher. Port Elizabeth needs trade teachers like this. Thanks Bob, keep 'em coming.
The Mr. Rogers of the welding trades. . .Love ya Bob!
Hahaha, I had a prick of a day at work today...come home and watched this, Bob you made me have a chuckle thanks
I have the cutmaster 52. Super awesome machine! Hands down best plasma cutter I’ve had or used. Built several different cutting tools for cutting straight, bevels, and circles. Had several people use it and sell their hypertherm and but a thermal dynamics. Used the 80 on my plasma table before I sold it. Even better!
Jayson Miller I have the 52 also. Absolutely love it. Hardly ever use a cutting torch or saw anymore. Plasma cut and done.
im callin BS bud
Thank you Bob. As with a welder, I see that there's lots to learn with plasma cutters. Keep up the great work!
Plasma gouging is nice
You can use your amps to control your material removal depth
Man that's impressive how it cut through those coupins.
Great video Bob
Plasma cutters are awesome! The only thing better is a cnc plasma, We happen to have one.Use it almost every day.
But they are no match for a laser.
You said ✌laaazer✌. 🤔
Thanks Bob
Have the same unit, just a bit older, works great !
A very quick and clean cutting machine.
It's long, and strong... Time to get the friction on! Always fun to go all Chuck Norris on metal isn't it?
It must just be me, but I have never been as enthusiastic about plasma cutting as others seem to be. I use it for sheet metal, and out of necessity on aluminum and stainless sometimes, but for most work on steel plate I still prefer the torch. It makes less, or usually NO, dross, and if there are any little bits of slag they knock right off. Not to mention I can flush-cut with the torch, and torch gouging seems to be cleaner, more controllable, and less apt to dig than plasma or carbon arc gouging. If I have to use an electric process to gouge, I would rather use carbon arc than plasma.
WTFChuk I think it depends on what you do with it. For me, with a small shop, I'd rather have the plasma cutter than a big bottle of OA.
Not that it's brain science or rocket surgery, there's a learning curve for torch cutting. And virtually none for plasma.
If I had a production shop, I'd certainly opt for OA over plasma for hand cutting ops.
And plasma for CNC.
It's not really an either-or proposition. A well equipped shop should have BOTH. Also, if you're only using the OA kit for cutting, you are wasting much of it's capabilities. Besides cutting, it will weld (see Bob's OA welding videos!), braze weld, braze, heat (bending, pre-and-post heating, normalizing, stress-relieving, flame hardening, etc.), gouge (better than carbon arc or plasma), scarf, flush-cut, etc. When you figure out everything it can do, and learn how to do it, it can really make many jobs easier, faster, and better.
Hey Bob. Great video. When you're done using my plasma cutter, be sure to ship that puppy back to me. I sure miss her.
Thank you for making this video. My boss bought me one of those last week. I have not had a chance to unbox it yet or read the manual.
I got a cheapy 3 way thing, tig, arc and cutter. Its a 50 amp cutter. I just keep that bugger flat out for nearly everything i want to cut. Most stuff is 2 or 3 mill though.
Nice demonstration of the 60i. I just got one and would really like to see it set up mechanized on a table and/or other ways as well.
You’re the man Bob I love your videos I’m currently in trade school and your videos have helped me out quite a lot you explain really good the subject an just wanted to say thanks man
Great video, Bob, thank you!
Cool video bob and gang seeing this reminds me how bad a need to get myself a plasma for home. Today I cut 2 pieces out of 1” metal like you did in video but I had a 4-1/2 grinder and probably took me at least 10 minuets and probably 2 blades to cut them wow that plasma is nice. My plate isn’t beveled though I didn’t end up beveling it either. After the cut and marking the bevel out I was thinking man this is taking too long. The purpose for cutting them boys to practice a 3g mig test. So instead I just used a piece of 1/8” angle I had laying around. Thanks for video 🙏👊🏻🍻
He is like a rock star on a stage, the welding and cutting equipment in his hands are like a fender stratocaster in the hands of Richie Blackmore!
For somebody that claims to have used a plasma cutter before you sure don't act like it. First up for cutting thin sheet you need to keep the amps low or travel extremely fast, you need to keep the torch pointing at least vertical but by hand, pointing towards the direction of travel and for low amps it is recommended to drag the tip along the job.
Bob the tool man Moffet!! ArrrArrrArrr
Like your sense of humour............good stuff!
Can you please do some cuts with the latest Everlast plasma cutter models?
nice plasmacutter
Hey Bob
I am learning how to weld with stick, MiG Gas & Gas-less & TIG. I love your lessons to provide online. Thank you so much!
Have you done any test to show the Thermal Dynamics Cut master 52 on 240 vac? This is the plasma cuter I have. However, I only have a little 5 horse compressor w 20 gal tank. I know I need bigger.
Would you demo this unit with its different features, its consumables etc? I really would like to see how this machine really at work in the hands of a pro, & what it can do.
Thank you so much
-Glenn Collins (Fort Nelson, BC Canada)
Looked at this unit decided to go local with Hypertherm 45XP love the marking, gouging, fine cut and drag cut is with all consumables no holding it off the work. Plus the air is auto no need to mess with it as well as cutting expended metal...The Hyperthem is such a solid machine. I think it still has this beat hands down. For the money I would go with Hyperthem again and again. Good video though.
Hypertherm is what I have also. Good machine, although like I said up top I don't use it much.
I was considering the TD CutMaster 60i and the HT PowerMax 60. The Hypertherm goes down to 20A. The 60i goes down to 10A. They both go up to 60A, where I would probably give the win to HyperTherm in build quality. I am leary of integrated air controls in both units. I hope that they are easily serviceable and easily replaceable. I haven't dug up service manuals for either unit yet to see. Both units have to be upgraded to add the CNC port. :/ HyperTherm at least has a model that includes the CPC or you can buy a lower model and add it yourself, giving you a choice. My reply here is just to say that the differences here isn't that great. The SL60 torch has a gouge tip, a drag tip, and a regular (lift) tip if I'm reading their brochure correctly. I don't think there is anything you can do with the 45XP that you can't do with the 60i. I think there are things you can do with the 60i that you can't do with the 45XP just in terms of cut capacity / cut speed. I'm certainly not knocking HyperTherm here. They set the bar. It just seems like TD came with a compelling option.
underourrock agreed on mostly all you said. Hyperthem 45xp has marking, flush cut, gouging, precision gouging and of course cutting. The 60 doesn’t have the low end to do the precision gouging but both are great machines. I scratched my Hyperthem on the face called Hyperthem they sent me out a whole new faceplate no questions. Also Jim Colt is visable online and is always willing to help. The intergrated air controls on the Hyperthem are fully serviceable. I’m not knocking the green machine but I like how the Hyperthem are sold and made a few states from me and every employee owns the company that’s how you keep quality high.
No disagreement here, either. Thanks for the thoughtful reply. You answered a couple questions I had. I think the CutMaster 60i at 10Amps will be able to do the precision gouging. So, in my case when trying to decide between the $1700 machine (on sale) and the $2800 machine, I think / hope I'll be okay. I like that there is a 4 year warranty and many people forget: Many credit card companies will extend your warranty an extra year or sometimes more automatically. I had a pool pump where the lcd screen (in the control section) died just outside of the warranty. I had only used it for one season. My credit card company covered me on it.
Powermax 65 is the current machine . The 60i is really not in the same class as that or the cutmaster 82. I had/have most of the Thermal machines, and a 65/now a 45XP. on my cnc table mostly.. The problem with the Thermal dynamics is not the machine but the 14 year old consumable, and torch design.. This is not to say the extra power of the 60i will not show up on 1inch over a 45XP, but machine cutting for best quality on the 45XP, and 60i is exactly the same 3 inches per minute.
The 45XP is a great machine in capability/ options, and the Thermal will just be a solid machine for most people.. Thermals are all about setup to get the best performance you can out of it.. I have a 60i showing up tomorrow, and will know a bit more about it then.. Still it's still working through 14 plus years of the same torch design, and it will never quite be as good as the Hypertherm in consumable life/etc.. When Thermacut releases it's retro torch for the victor, it's going to be quite something.I use some of their stuff in the 45XP, and it's excellent/ They have a variable nozzle bore patent that really works.
The thermal manual will tell you about some setups, but it sure will not tell you a whole lot about getting it to cut as well as a Hypertherm. Not on a table anyway. That will take years of experience, and best just go for a 45XP for 95% of the people out there. There is no cnc interface out for the victor, although the manual shows it can support one.. Another road block for some cnc setups..
That's an amazing cut
Where would one find this unit and how does this compare to hypertherm?
interesting machine, thanks.
Is this machine plasma table ready ? Or can it be adapted
i'll be interested to know what condition the tip was in after that 1" cut
I have an off topic question. When getting ready to get a welding job and having to do the 3G test, will I have to do it standing up or am I given a chair? I was asking so I can practice more on welding vertical standing up if I have to. Right now im in Job Corps taking Welding trade but I have a week left before I leave
How many air pressure you set for 40 Amps
How does this stack up against the hypertherm powermax 45?
John no competition. Esab sucks
Great video, Bob. What pressures were you running for the various cuts?
would you say this one is better than the hypertherm 45xp?
nice bob....thanks.
can u please tell the prices?
Great presentation sir. I understand what dras is but, what does it stand for. (Hope I did not crucify the spelling too bad)
Harold Watkins The word is dross.
Dross is impurities in molten metal. Which is why it fractured so easily when he hit it with a chipping hammer.
Thank you so much. I understand what you are describing, however, is the word "dross", an abbreviation for something or is that an industry named condition?
Harold Watkins I just Googled the etymology of dross. It's apparently old English, Dutch and Germanic in origin. "Dirt" or "scum" is what it means, but evolved to mean scum (or impurities) in molten metal.
Thank you so much QDaddy. That was exactly what I was quirious about. I have never heard the description or definition.
good info.. thanks ..
RAR RAR RAR ! 👍
Rar rar rar. I almost died
I'm sorry but I must have missed the air pressure you set this machine to so it would cut the 1 inch plate? I have a plasma cutter and it suggests using 60 lbs. of air pressure to cut 1/4 inch steel at 50 amps.
There is a LED lit air pressure dial on the front of the unit. When you increase the amperage, the readout below there, tells you to increase the air pressure. When you lower the amperage, it tells you to the lower the air pressure. The dial on the face does just that. I believe ThermalDynamics does this automatically. I kind of like the ability to do it manually because if you want a little more air or a little less air, you ought to be able to set that. I am leary of the controls though. They look very weak / very twitchy.
Thank you this is great info.
I got a $200 plasma cutter that could plasma gouge with a 5 gallon air compressor
wasn't able to cut with it though
A white Cleveland??😁👋
8:06 😂
will this work with a cnc plasma table
Reno's Garage you can but a automated torch for it. Plug and play. But in my opinion I would buy the A80 for a table.
Bob❤
NICE... GREETINGS FROM ISRAEL
May I aks what is the amperage on this machine?
10 to 60 amps output.
O Mighty GOD please send a very needed plasma cutter LORD you know my heart in JESUS name amen.
I wish Bob was my father
666 likes currently? satan is a fan apparently. Rar Rar Rar. lol
So expensive
Review, not unboxing1
when will doctor fieldres come to weld.com the greatest welder in the world
Don’t buy it. This unit is junk. It cuts real good.
But
You are limited to how long it operates. It will shut down after about 5 minutes of cutting and you have to shut the power off and turn it back on.
Junk. And anything I’ve ever had made by esab has always had problems.
Metric please? Will you ever learn that talking fractions / Inch is the same as disrespecting the rest of the planet who has made a choice to use metric? The glorious "United States of America" stand pretty isolated - both with their units of measurements as well as the demeanor of their president.
If you would like him to convert the measurements to metric for you, try asking politely.
No need for "Will you ever learn", "disrespecting the rest of the planet", making jibes at the USA or dragging your political views into a comment section of a plasma cutting video.
Besides, they have conversion tables readily available on the internet.
