Another tip: a hamster's personality can change later on in life. I had a hamster that lived to 4, and when he was a baby, he was the sweetest, cuddliest little thing. But when he got older, he grew grumpy and irritable. He still enjoyed cuddles, but only during the brief window of time that he was awake (around 2-3 hours close to the time), and if you tried to even look at him when he was trying to sleep, he would scream at you. RIP Freckle, you crazy little bastard 💕
I had a teddy bear hamster that would break out of his cage and just wait at the edge of my bed to wake up. Sometimes he would cheep to wake me up earlier. RIP Mr. Grape
Omg I didn’t know that but it makes sense. My hamster used to slap me when she didn’t want to be handled which was nice cause it didn’t hurt and still I’d know I shouldn’t handle her. Then the last year of her life she started trying to bite and actually biting me a few times and I was shocked. I was so used to just feeling her lil hands when she was mad and then she suddenly chomped on my finger lol. She also just seemed a little more grumpy and tired, kinda like an old lady.
It's been 4 years since my winter white died. She was so docile even without handling and loved sleeping in my hand. In the 3 years I've had her, I didn't even have to train her or anything and she never bit me. Whenever I pet her, she would close her eyes and relax before sleeping. I will always miss her :-'). rip J, 2014-2017 ♡
They normally only live about a year in the wil n usually only 2 in captivity so 3 yrs is actually great for anyone confused about why it died after such a short time
I was all prepared to go in and be super careful with my hamster and he curled up and fell asleep on me the first night he came out! He's spoilt rotten, massive tank, lots of play and attention and plenty of hidey holes for a good sleep. I love watching your hamster videos with my hamster, I can't stand most hammy vids where they are clearly stressed out. So lovely just to see happy well cared for hamsters!
Saying that every hamster is different is an understatement. The first hamster I ever had as a pet was literally the smartest non-human I've ever seen (in fact, smarter than some humans). It learned to open its cage, navigate the house, and climb into my bed. It even "starred" in a couple of episodes of a TV show as the captain of a miniature (remote-controlled) boat. The second hamster I kept was thick as a brick, could barely find its way into its own igloo, and tried to "hibernate" twice. Indoors. During spring. I had to plonk it in front of a heater to revive it and wake it up, upon which it resumed being confused by the layout of its own home.
I love seeing people being kind to any animal and showing others how to do the same. I've never had a hamster so this was quite interesting and informative.
Had lots of hamsters for several years. Never got bitten once. Even more simple is to start handling them when they started developing fur and their eyes are open. At that point in their lives, you are just a benign lamdscape that feeds them, so they won't fear you. I've only met two screaming hamsters and they were store bought. That seems to be pretty stressful for them. They can learn to trust you if you leave them in their cages for a few days and hand feed them through the bars. When they are no longer scared of you, you can introduce your hand gradually. In any case: respect the hamster. They are lovely and fragile creatures; you are asking them to trust a 20 meters high booming man tree that wants to pet them.
These hamsters are just the most adorable floofs! I have rats and while I understand they are way more social than hamsters, all of my boys were adopted. From lab rescues to accidental litters to feeder babies, they had all kind of backgrounds. From my experience, the key to getting their trust was spending time with them and interacting with them every single day, no exceptions. All of them eventually became loving and trusting.
I had a similar experience with my guinea pigs. They were both rescues and were afraid of people. Now they use me as a bed during laptime. Time , patience and consistency.
My gerbils was too trusting. They would constantly jump up and down in cage, to get my attention. I used to play with em, them then climb on me and I used to let them run around, daily, in their running balls. 1 thing I don’t miss, is the poo that I had to clean from my floor, daily. With that said, still glad I gave them freedom to run.
I had four male golden hamsters (one after one, not at the same time) as a kid in the 80's, of course none was pedigree as there wasn't such hamsters in Poland then. And all of them were very tame - handling was the key - I handled them A LOT every day since they were bought and in the evening they were let to run in one room. At first they were shy, but after about two weeks each of them was extremely tame and each of them often climbed all over us humans. My friend also bought a hamster, but hers was never let out to run free and she handled him little "because it stressed him" - so he remained shy all his life. So my experience says, even if you got a shy young hamster, handle him a lot and he/she will become tame very quickly. Cannot tell about the fully adult hamsters though. The first one had, what I could call a dominant (or perhaps assertive) personality, as if you tried to touch him during sleep, in a split second he would turn on you and bite. He simply didn't wish to be awaken. But when he was not sleeping, he was very open and friendly. He was also very intelligent, eg. he was the only one, which not only climbed on us, but also regularly came to my dad while he was watching TV and sitting on an armchair, to lie on his lap, with body flat and extended, but head and ears up. It was absolutely incredible, as I've never had or heard about another hamster doing such a thing. We were laughing that they were watching TV together. To sit on my lap this hamster came like this maybe just few times, on my dad's lap he lay on a regular basis... (My dad loved animals and he had a really special bond with them).
I love my hammy! He's so calm and lets me do anything to him really. He's got a close bond to me. He doesn't like to be left alone. He much prefers having human company.
My hamster isn't as calm as the one in this video. He doesn't want to be held with his back on my palm (even with food as a distraction) but he is already tame. He let me hold him, he likes to stay in my bed and climb all over me. I already accepted that maybe it's just his personality. He doesn't like to be held that way and I respect that. And I love him anyway. 💛
Mine didn't like to be laid on his back either. Even in his cabin or cage he didn't sleep like that. But he'd sleep on my chest or in my arms a lot...I think they're like us. They just have favorite sleeping positions!
I still remember my first hamster when i was like 13. He (or she) was the best bc it used to sleep in my hand and was so cuddly and comfortable all the time with me. Never experienced this with any other animal i've ever had.
I love how they are woken up with food. It seems like the most gentle and pleasant way to rouse them from sleep. Who wouldn’t want to be woken up with the smell of their favorite treat. >~
My hamster was very smart. She was a baby when we got her. She was very docile and sweet. She loved sleeping between my chin and chest or inside my shirt pocket. Had her for about 2 years. She passed away in my hands when I was 16. Was completely gutted over it. I wish they had a longer lifespan.

It's amazing how food can literally make them stop doing whatever they were doing! Even while asleep, they will eat that food like it's the last meal on earth!!! Lol 😂... So cute too!
This makes me miss my Cuddles - she was a Teddy Bear Hamster. Such a sweet girl - one night she got out of her enclosure and my mom and I searched all over the house til we finally found her standing on her hind legs across the room from my cat. Luckily my cat understood that Cuddles was precious to me and all was okay. It was actually really cute. Cuddles lived a nice long hamster life 💞🐹
Hamsters are absolutely adorable and very clean and entertaining. 99% are docile and safe to handle but sadly their life expectancy is about 2 years. I’ve had about 30 different hammies since I was 13 years old
Ive gone through a few hammies..love them little things...they are freindly curious little fuzzies...I always keep their cage clean and dry and pet them and spoiled them everyday..cried hard when I had to put them down from old age...even the smallest things can bring you so much love
I learned that when my babies used to sleep in a herd, they are actually used to being stepped on, pushed and shoved around by their mom or siblings so you can pet them and move them as you want and they are still comfy as heck. I love how fluffy and so happy and sleepy they are in your hands, they look like they are melting. I remember only a few hamsters I had actually bit me, but they were mostly startled or very new to their enviroment, but mostly I could practically do whatever with them and they were cool with it. Some people think they are dumb animals but I say they are clever than some dog breeds
My hamster is so hyper he doesn’t like to stay in hands but he’ll get on my hand to come out of the cage and while he’s running around the room like another toy to climb 😂, I’m training him to learn that hand = treat to play with him more when he’s running around and making putting him away less a “catch me first” event ☺️
The sweetest ham that my ex and I had was Lina. She was out of her cage and playing with us on day one! We would never have tried to force that. That same day, Lina was hanging out on one of ex's arms while he scritched her. When he stopped, she looked at him, looked around for a moment, and scritched his arm with her tiny claws. ❤🐹 I can't begin to describe how lovely she was. She loved strangers, bigger animals, and never bit, not even when the vet prodded her. She leaned toward the vet and let out a pleading _beep_ as if to say, "Stop!" She was amazing. They all are amazing.
A friend had a pair of hamsters years ago. Their names were Fred and Flossie! They only moved around in these tunnels from their cages. They had maybe two litters together. She changed their water and fed them but never really interacted with them. I don't think her mother wanted them escaping into their house. They were fun to watch.
Oh, how sweet. I can't hold my current hamster like that. He was a rescue from a bad situation and is very anxious. So he doesn't like to be held, but he'll eat from my hand and let me pet him. I had one when I was younger who was docile like the hams in this video. He liked to go in the pocket of my hoodie and fall asleep there. 🥰
I just bought a baby hampter 3 months ago from a breeder I had not bought from before. The baby hampter is scared, doesn't like handling, hyperactive... I couldn't figure out why her temperament is so bad, so I checked the pedigree. She's 1st generation "homebred" hamster, her parents were both store hamsters. The breeder failed to tell me that they were from a store. It is a slow process, but she is finally starting to trust me. MUCH more work than with proper pedigree hamsters that have been selectively bred for generations.
Aww so cute I used to have a hamster like that I named it cream And sadly it died😔 But I have another hamster named cookie he's still a live :) Btw u have so many hamster I want em so cute (*’(OO)’*) Aww I hope ur little fluff balls don't get sick and always be healthy Ur a good owner 👍
When i met my hamster in a pet store, it was love at first sight.... for the both of us XD i mean, i didnt enter the pet store to buy a hamster, but he decided he wanted to come home with me. He lived 2,5 year glued to my body :) always hugging and being close to me. My world became a cold place when he died of old age :(
i did that when i was little too!!! even in the whole house. he knew his name so whenever i would call him to come back he did. my little guy was so special.
People always ask me the same with my hamster and are shocked thats hes so calm and even falls asleep on me, we got him from a pet store, at first he was terrified of me so we left him alone for a few days and in those first few days he did scream at me but after enticing him with some banana he came around, patience was the key,i get him out pretty much every evening so hes regularly handled and he gets to free roam but these days prefers to nuzzle into my chest and fall asleep, he loves the attention now, and even comes to the cage door when i call him 🥰
My dwarf white hamster is such a good girl. Most dwarf hamsters bite and are afraid of humans but mine spends most of her life out of her cage either in my hands or in my pocket in public.. shes almost 3 years old so considering her age I believe she’s not only spoiled but living well past her life expectancy of 2 years.. she still has plenty of energy too. Only gets the best foods, fruits, veggies and bedding. And only alkaline water. Now that i think about it she’s more spoiled than my daughter
my hamsters was use to be scared of me but now him and her isnt scared of me anymore :D i also use your "how to prevent hamsters from biting tips" ^^ TY :D
there’s a bacteria or parasite, i can’t quite remember, that often appears in rats, mice and hansters. It causes them to loose their natural flight instinct and to not be scared of any bigger predator. This is because the bacteria/parasite feels more comfortable in a cats body so the mouse will just walk up to the cat without any fear. Other than that it shows no symptoms so it can appear as tho your hamster has a rly clingy personality and isn’t scared at all. Of course this is not the reason for every rodent loving their owner. I was just thinking about this.
I learnt the importance of temperament with breeding through rats. On youtube, Someone had bred domestic rats together and then a wild and domestic together at the same time. The fully domestic babies were very tame and relax but the 1st generation wild mix babies were always super scared of him even though they were all born to him. Each new generation of wild mix babies got tamer than the last
Do you know where I could find this video or what it was called or the creator? This sounds like a very interesting experiment and I would love to see it!
Is it by any chance V-Line Exotics? I was searching for it and watched a video by him and I think that might be who you were talking about. The video was titled “NYC rats now being bred in captivity (the beginning)”

I can't begin to describe how lovely she was. She loved strangers, bigger animals, and never bit, not even when the vet prodded her. She leaned toward the vet and let out a pleading _beep_ as if to say, "Stop!" She was amazing. They all are amazing.
'oh boi' classic! lol
Man, I wish I could adopt one your lovely baby hamsters! :3 so cute!!
Jeez. As adorable as they are, they are terrifying when they yawn.
Cute fluffballs:)
1:05 "Hey, what's that thing? Well, I guess I'll eat it!"
They look soo cute sleeping
Also I didn‘t know they eat their own poopy🥴
😅😆😁🤢
Yeah me neither
Some of there poop Has protein in it some of it doesn't the wet one's no dry light is what they eat.
It’s something to do with getting the extra nutrients out of it I think?
@@clorby22 yep you got it.
Your hamsters is so cute lol
유리잔에 자다가 주인 손에 와도 모르고 잘 자네요 ㅎㅎ 너무 귀엽네요 ㅎㅎ
(그와중에 밥 주니 바로 일어나 먹네요 ㅋㅋ)

He did that wayyy too casual for it to be an accident 😂 lmfao
So darn cute. I didn't know hamsters ate their poo though lol
1:10 Me in the morning when I have to go to bathroom but I also want to snooze in.
When i met my hamster in a pet store, it was love at first sight.... for the both of us XD i mean, i didnt enter the pet store to buy a hamster, but he decided he wanted to come home with me. He lived 2,5 year glued to my body :) always hugging and being close to me. My world became a cold place when he died of old age :(
I know the feeling I had two hamsters and two dogs that died:(
So cute, sometimes I leave my hamster free in my room, and he gets on my head or hands
i did that when i was little too!!! even in the whole house. he knew his name so whenever i would call him to come back he did. my little guy was so special.
People always ask me the same with my hamster and are shocked thats hes so calm and even falls asleep on me, we got him from a pet store, at first he was terrified of me so we left him alone for a few days and in those first few days he did scream at me but after enticing him with some banana he came around, patience was the key,i get him out pretty much every evening so hes regularly handled and he gets to free roam but these days prefers to nuzzle into my chest and fall asleep, he loves the attention now, and even comes to the cage door when i call him 🥰
How loud is a hamster scream?
@@TheKatarinaGiselle to me it not that loud, but it is high pitched. I think there's videos on UA-cam about it.
your HAMSTERS are so cute lol
💖 :)I LOVE HAMSTER (: 💖
Your baby hamsters are so cute and adorable. It is amazing that they trust you and can sleep on your hand without biting you.
Eles são tão fofos e mansinhos velho, que vontade de dar um cheiro 😔♥️💫
My dwarf white hamster is such a good girl. Most dwarf hamsters bite and are afraid of humans but mine spends most of her life out of her cage either in my hands or in my pocket in public.. shes almost 3 years old so considering her age I believe she’s not only spoiled but living well past her life expectancy of 2 years.. she still has plenty of energy too. Only gets the best foods, fruits, veggies and bedding. And only alkaline water. Now that i think about it she’s more spoiled than my daughter
Happy diwali kumaq and all dear cute hamster big fan from india ❤️❤️
Awee da baby ham hams 😍
my hamsters was use to be scared of me but now him and her isnt scared of me anymore :D i also use your "how to prevent hamsters from biting tips" ^^ TY :D

Did i see that right? Hahahaha wtg
there’s a bacteria or parasite, i can’t quite remember, that often appears in rats, mice and hansters.
@1:10 Hamster: "Hey, poop! Right outta the oven!"
My late Maddie was an adult but loved to sleep in my hands, chest & lap ... I miss her terribly ... got a photo of her in frame with pink ribbon😞

Myt not
They are gentle hamsters and you are a good owner. There is a general connection here.
Adorable! I’d have a 100 of them if I could lol. ❤️
My hamster was💀
So floofy and cute!! 😍😍😍 Wonderful advice! Thank you💗
I learnt the importance of temperament with breeding through rats.
@@TheKatarinaGiselle UA-cam never notified me of this comment, I'm so sorry! Gosh you've probably long forgotten about this but yes that's the one!
CUTEST FRIGGIN LITTLE THINGS IN THE WORLD! I love your videos and hamsters!
Today I got my hamster and he’s 1 month old and he’s pretty cool, he just jumps right into my hand and let me pet him. I named him Kenzie
I had hamsters at early age and I will tell you, as long as you give them love, they'd be gladly let you handle them all day.
It started out so cute and then a minute in, little Ham just bent and ate the poop right out of their own butthole, and i'm still amazed.
I think that like rabbits, eating their own poop is the only way they can get vitamin C.
2am and just watched Hamster enjoying same meal for second time
