How I Upgraded My Hamster Cage (After Hamster Escaped & Destroyed my Carpet)

- Today I have upgraded my cute hamster Miso's IKEA Detolf cage after she escaped and destroyed my carpet (I forgot to close the lid).
Now this 1000+ sq inch enclosure has a sandpit, a natural playground (with 3D-printed toys) and a 13inches (35cm) deep burrowing space.
Please note that 3D-printed toys are safe as long as your hamster does not keep chewing them.

I've been raising a child with my girlfriend for the past 5 years, he is her grandson.
He moved back to New York this past spring, to live with his mother.
He had to leave his hamster, Bendy, with us. I had no idea how much fun, and how attached I could get to this little critter. I normally get up around 1AM to make sure she has what she needs, before I go back to sleep.
I'm very sorry for the loss of your pet, your friend. I can only offer my condolences.

Forget your furry little friend EVER! This looks wonderful! Miso is a cutie. I do warn though Hazel friends Hamster sand is a bit dangerous due to the dustiness. Children's play sand is actually cheaper and better, though calcium free reptile sand is even better, just not as cheap.
If you watch the video closely, you will see a reptile sand has been used later at 3:48. Thank you for caring about hamsters though.
Owning hamsters for over 20 years does not make me immune to mistakes and I am more than happy to take good advices to continuously improve my care :)
@@KumaQQ Oh I thought you were mixing sand! But yeah, if I recall correctly, Hazel friends sand used to be good a few years ago but they changed how it was made. Thank you so much for listening! I love your hams, they're so cute and well behaved. My ham would rather wake up and stare at me in the middle of the day or early morning.

I absolutely love seeing videos like this when people notice their hamsters cage needs to be upgraded or needs more enrichment. That's one spoiled hamster
This is one of my favorite animal videos of all time. It is so adorable and I love it.
Love this setup! Be careful of the gaps between the sticks of the bendy bridge wall as there have been many hammies who have gotten their paws stuck in between the sticks. Lots of people fill the gaps in with safe moss to prevent this xx
I would be cautious with Timothy hay only because it can be sharp, I use botanical & orchard grass, and they both smell very nice in there.
Timothy hay aids in maintaining a healthy digestive tract, promotes dental health and regulates weight. Lots of people use them for bedding and currently I have not seen any evidence on the negative side. However, please do let me know if you find any evidence or an occasion where a hamster is hurt by Timothy hay. Thank you for caring about hamsters though.

@@KumaQQ There have been many hamsters who have been harmed as its sharp and can poke an eye or cheek pouch. Hamsters don't tend to eat hay, and it's mostly used for burrow stability and extra enrichment. Personally I use orchard grass hay as it is safer and helps keep up burrows! :)

One time we forgot to put the lid back on our hamsters cage and went to bed, we were so suprised that he didn't escape. But when we let him free roam, that's a whole other story lol

Upgrading my cage since it’s quite small to an IKEA detolf. Everytime I let my hammie out he wrecks my carpet too! 😅😭 you gotta give them what they want otherwise ... they ninja their way to want they want nearby 😂

Only one of hamsters escaped from the cage the door was fairly flimsy can be pushed from inside. Female Panda Syrian hamsters, She didn't go far and was found in the kitchen of all place. There's loads of hiding places in the living room. Luckily, she didn't run away and just sat there on the floor. I keep small lobster claw clasp on the door to prevent any escapades.

Awww, Miso is such a cutie! Cheeky little Hammie. Wanted to let you know though that Tiny Friends Farm Bathing Sand (I believe that's the sand you're using, correct me if I'm wrong!) is actually pretty bad for your Hamster's respiratory system :( It's got a lot of dust in it. I would recommend you try reptile sands! Just make sure they're not the Calcium kind. They tend to be a lot less dusty!
EDIT: Noticed you use Pets at Home Desert Sand later in the video - This is the same sand I use! :) Seems you know what you're doing.

okay now I'm trying that set up it's gorgeous my hamster is big on escaping and I don't know what to do I want to add more enrichment but she climbs it to get out, maybe it's time to try this, because there is so much enrichment that she won't want to escape because it's all so new thanks for the inspiration

Hi, I know this is not kuma and it's advice from another channel, not sure if you've seen her or not, but Victoria rachel (who is an advocate of larger cages a bit like these ones) says a lot of people think you have to clean the cages once a week but it's not really true. Do it about once a month, otherwise they can get stressed when all the scent goes etc. she recommends spot cleaning instead
If I remember correctly
Once a month, and only take out half of their bedding. Hamsters need to have their scent or else they get stressed. Victoria Raechel provides great information for hamsters.
I only spot clean every 3-5 days :)

I actually have experience with my precious short haired golden Syrian hamster named Lady Penelope doing a Harry Houdini escape attempt. She’s done so twice now, the first time was before Xmas because I forgot to shut her cage properly and she escaped down the back of the coffee table her cage stands. The second time was when my dad and I were giving Penelope some cuddle time on my bed and she did a runner down the back of my bed this was a few wee ago and I still remember nearly going into cardiorespiratory arrest.

hii i think the upgrade looks nice since it looks natural but i think you should make atleast the whole cage full of bedding, at least half of the cage!! That way ur hammy can dig wherever not just one area.

my hamster never slept in a house i bought him so many and then one day i couldnt find him and noticed he is curled up sleeping inside the little hide so maybe Miso might do the same thing
Hey! that sand is very dusty, i really recommend you to find an alternative, i had that sand before and it was very dusty, it can harm hamster's lungs and can lead to lung infections etc.

@@KumaQQ I've done a lot of research on hamsters and in Victoria Rachael's videos she says to use reptile sand that doesnt have any added dyes or calcium. I love your channel btw and am getting one soon. Im on the waiting list for a breader and have been watching your videos in the mean time. :)
what bedding do you use? My hamster needs a new brand of bedding because most of the bedding I tried my hamster has allergies to.

I love the cage! But be careful with the hay. They pick it up to build a nest, but it can really hurt in their mouths. :)

Get (or make) yourself a multiple chamber hide-out. Im sure theyll love it. Its too bad the large bedding box is contained to such a confined space, i wouldve tried using the whole cage. But if she seems happy then she seems happy I suppose.
how would you use the whole cage for that? you need space for other things
@@4nd4s the only space you might need to seperate is the wheel, if your cage isnt large enough to have bedding+wheel on top of each other. Otherwise theres not really a reason to keep it contained to such a small space. You can still put things like decoration/tunnels/branches etc on the bedding. Just make sure you push it down abit so its a bit more compacted. And for heavy things like a ceramic house you can use a platform that you stick in the bedding. This will also help keep burrows from collapsing.
@@4nd4s Build a raised lid big enough to fit all of their enrichment (i.e. 40cm tall), then fill the glass part to the brim with bedding. That’s what I’m doing with my hamster’s detolf.

Just add lots of safe bedding and press them really hard to make the base firm enough for burrowing :)
