When I used to grow poppies in Kansas (6b), I used to put the seeds in a pepper shaker and sprinkle them on the snow. The melting snow pulled the seeds into the soil at their correct depth. I always had LOTS of poppies.
I've sown poppies as late as May/June in zone 8 and they still grow and flower OK, but when allowed time to naturally drop their seeds, overwinter and re-emerge (April or so) the following years blooms are incompatible in size, height, and number of blooms. Anywhere they don't have to compete with grass (your leafy tree borders are perfect) they basically become a permanent aggressive seed in your soilscape.
I literally just did that yesterday I got some hens and chicks and some Afghan whites and was to excited to wait till next year I live in Massachusetts so I think that's zone 5 or almost 6
Ok that makes me feel a little better. I'm in zone 7a (North Central Oklahoma), and I've never grown poppies before. It gets so unbelievably hot and humid in the summer, particularly by the end of June it will be 100 regularly, so I thought it best to get them started as early as possible. My fall sowing didn't turn out very well. I didn't amend our solid clay soil any and most seeds were probably sterile (I got some from flower companies but also a lot of organic food Poppy seeds hoping they'd sprout. Not so much.) I'm reseeding in various places that I've worked on the soil a lot now, mid February. It's still in the 20s regularly.

You mentioned stratification isn't necessary and Black Friday is a good day to plant- it's Thanksgiving Eve as I type this so I'm going to sow them this weekend. thanks for all the info
i found a really easy way to get them going quickly. germinate them on a wet paper towel wrapped in saran wrap, keep them under simple compact fluorescent light (the blue-ish ones not the red-ish ones) over night, maybe two nights, then when you see little white roots that look like tails, and they turn brown/reddish in color and/or when they begin looking like an appostrophe symbol, you can take them to the soil and just dab your fingers on the exposed germinated seeds, theyll stick, and you can just flick them and cast them into the soil, well thats the easiest way i find, just be gentle, dont want to squish or mess with the exposed root, keep moist and within a couple days they should sprout. I came up with this method because ants were literally picking up and carrying away my seeds when i just put them on top of the soil without germinating, but i notice they either dont take the germinated seeds, or they grow too fast for the ants to get all of them. anyways i hope that helps someone. EDIT: also, ive placed the seeds just a few inches away from the CFL to germinate them and it seemed to make them go faster, just make sure theyre under the light to avoid the rising heat, and not enclosed with the light, also to avoid heat

In California zone 3B , I launched a handful of "California poppies" l in various areas including the freeway onramp, they finally grew after a few months along with rain in the late winter. And I know goats eat poppies. Great video. Seems nature plays the numbers game and seeds are "outside" all year, the happy ones germinate!

Fun fact, you don't need light for germination. I germinated hundreds in a small container with wet soil and a paper towel wrapped around the container after seeds are sowed and put it in a dark closet for a week and you will have an entire container full of baby poppies looking for light and then you can transplant them or thin them out and wait until they're big enough for transplants but obviously for outdoor stuff then you wouldn't want to do it one at a time like that. I was just saying that you don't actually need light for them to germinate and I actually had better luck germinating in the dark in a room temperature closet.

They should have germinated 15-30 days after sowing. If they haven’t germinated yet they likely will not. I have a ton of videos showing the progress of the seeds included in the poppy playlist.
It depends on where you live. I’m located in warm zone 7 Nc where the ground doesn’t freeze. you are always best to get verbatim advice in gardening from someone who lives in your region.

I'm currently in Hampton Va zone 8a since 2009. Within the last 3 years purchased a home and have so much yard space I don't know what to do with. Backyard is full sun and I've had a vegetable container garden for 2 years. Now I have built 3 raised beds and looking forward to gardening in them. Now I'm trying to learn about winter sowing and I pulled out some seeds and poppies are some of them. That's how I found your channel searching on YT. I'm going to try it the way you explained. Yes this was an experiment that worked! I mulched very lightly with triple shred hardwood mulch (like 1/4”) and then tossed some poppy seed on top to see if they would grow. Abd they have. But I don’t recommend this because in general everyone is conditioned to mulch much more heavily and the seed won’t grow.

I’m in zone 7 Raleigh Nc. Yes California poppies (not actual poppies but Escholztia) are very similar. I will be sowing those soon and will post a video 👍
Poppies do not grow bulbs. They develop a tap root. I grow annual varieties so they get direct seeded in fall and bloom in spring, set seed and die by mid June. Watch the videos in the playlist to see how they develop over a season.
I'm in zone 7a but it hit minus 10 in January (not that uncommon) and the few I had sown in the fall got blasted. How do I avoid this other than plant in February?
Not sure of any solutions, though -10 is NOT typical zone 7 temp. I would recommend gardening more like you live in zone 6 and just sowing dates accordingly.

I appreciate every gardening video. That said, I live in Florida I did it about 2 weeks ago I have little seedlings. Oddly when I googled it they say that they can grow in zone 9A throughout the spring if planted in May or June.... Odd

I’d wait a few days depending on his damp your ground is when you sow. Generally in the cool season the ground stays wet longer and you don’t want over saturate.

If I take seeds from my oriental red poppy, would I end up with an orange poppy? I heard that red is a hybridized color and the seeds revert back to the wild orange color, kinda like other plants like phlox revert back to a lavender color. I want to start new poppies from seeds from the 1 poppy that I successfully got to grow from a root because the bare roots don't seem to have much success.
I'm in zone 6 and I looked online and they say planted in late spring because are weather can get brutal in northern Arkansas. But I plan on planting some the first of the year and some in March and just as you say,experiment. Thanks again and keep the videos coming 😊

I’ve found October is too early because the plants are too tender when we get cold temps and they die. But every year is different. My best crops last year were sown between Dec 20 and Jan 15 which is super late. But everything I sowed earlier died at the holiday freeze.

Zone 6b here (Ohio River Valley). Whe HARD FREEZE all through Jan/Feb, about half of March. Occasionally a few days in Dec ... but ALL of Nov Dec and parts of Oct dip into ight frost to light freeze territory. Do they handle that kinda cold after germination?

I’ve been wanting to grow these for several years now, and I finally got my hands on some really good ones some Turkish red and the gigantean and Afghan galania Izmir. There’s a few others I intend to get like blue Himalayan and such. Anyhow, I was stunned when I heard that you said you were in Raleigh North Carolina because that’s exactly where I’m at. I’m trying to make plans for my bread seed poppies, but I’m a little confused. I’m in zone 7a and Black Friday is near the first frost. Is the goal for them to germinate and sprout in cool temps and then survive winter?
I'm in Zone 5A we just got yet another snow storm and are having subzero temps on and off as well as the ground is still pretty much frozen. When do you suggest I plant them. I'm having a hard time deciding when to plant my seeds this year since I don't have many seeds left from my favorite flowers over the years and I really want harvest as many seeds as I can this year so I can replenish my seed supply so my flower gardens will finally be at their full potential.

It is NOT illegal to grow poppies as an ornamental. It is imperative however that you do not score the seed heads, as that is illegal. I do not address questions regarding any other purpose for growing poppies beyond their ornamental attributes.
In my experience, yes it is too late. That being said, you can still try! If they don’t grow then you will know for certain that fall planting is best.
Im not trying to give advice gif people in Minnesota. I live and garden in North Carolina and stare the clearly. For northern gardeners follow someone local to your region.

You directly contradict most of what's instructed on my Park Seed "Falling in Love" poppy seeds that I just received, but I'm going with your advice because it makes much more sense. I am surprised, though, about the compost, since I thought that poppies like poor soil. But I will do it. Oh, huh, I just looked it up -- what kind of soil poppies prefer -- and I got every answer possible! I've only had a few perennial poppy plants for just two seasons, and this is my very first experience in any way with annual poppies.

Hi Brie, We live in zone 7 in King George Virginia, I purchased red corn poppy seed online last year but it was too late to plant them. On January 2nd of this year we created a small raised bed of soil with a light layer of soil conditioner on top and sprinkled the seed like you recommend. The area is sunny and we have received plenty of moisture but I have yet to see any germination. Should I have stored the seeds in the fridge or do I need to be patient? Thanks, Dave
Generally if they haven’t germinated in 3 weeks they won’t, but it may be that your soil temps are cold. Wait a bit longer. I always recommend storing seeds in the refrigerator to extend their viability so in the future stash them there.
Yes…. That’s what we used to do in zone 5 Michigan. I’m assuming the snow you gave will melt soonish and you experience some temp fluctuations? Above freezing in daytime?

I have started echinacea this way but I covered the seeds with a large water bottle or milk jugs. I cut the bottoms off, leave the top off, and make other ventilation holes as well. It helps with the leaves and other types of debris. This is a great visual, thank you!
I pant them and something told me to let them surface a little.. I have a ton I planted so some are surface and others are a little under the soil.. I have a ton of seeds so enough to plant. Can't wait for them to grow. And hey kitty!
Yes! I have accidentally green poppies in containers and they did well. Maybe not as tall as the in ground plants but they did flower. And yes worm castings are great for poppies and everything!

If possible, I cover direct sown spots with white tulle netting until they get up some size to keep birds, cats, certain pests, etc off.

That great, but it sounds a lot harder than just direct seeding them which works extremely well with very little effort.

Not at all. I sow thick and they hold themselves up. I’ll make sure I talk about that tomorrow when I actually get some seed sown.

If I take seeds from my oriental red poppy, would I end up with an orange poppy? I heard that red is a hybridized color and the seeds revert back to the wild orange color, kinda like other plants like phlox revert back to a lavender color. I want to start new poppies from seeds from the 1 poppy that I successfully got to grow from a root because the bare roots don't seem to have much success.
That is different species Papaver
orientale and will not have different flower colors. The species j grow are p. Rhoeas and p somniferum

Has anybody tried growing them in a fabric grow bag for overwintering and then put them outside when the time is right in the spring?
They need cold chill. They can be grown in fabric bags but they do not need to be brought inside.

I'm in zone 6 and I looked online and they say planted in late spring because are weather can get brutal in northern Arkansas. But I plan on planting some the first of the year and some in March and just as you say,experiment. Thanks again and keep the videos coming 😊

What is the earliest month to sow poopy seeds in zone 7b? Is October too early?
I’ve found October is too early because the plants are too tender when we get cold temps and they die. But every year is different. My best crops last year were sown between Dec 20 and Jan 15 which is super late. But everything I sowed earlier died at the holiday freeze.

Zone 6b here (Ohio River Valley). Whe HARD FREEZE all through Jan/Feb, about half of March. Occasionally a few days in Dec ... but ALL of Nov Dec and parts of Oct dip into ight frost to light freeze territory.
Do they handle that kinda cold after germination?
Yes the advice is accurate from zones 6-9.

They are frost tolerant. They are more cold tolerant than heat tolerant.

I’ve been wanting to grow these for several years now, and I finally got my hands on some really good ones some Turkish red and the gigantean and Afghan galania Izmir. There’s a few others I intend to get like blue Himalayan and such. Anyhow, I was stunned when I heard that you said you were in Raleigh North Carolina because that’s exactly where I’m at. I tried to grow California ones when I was out in Washington state the last two years but it just didn’t work right and I didn’t have the proper space anyhow, but I’m trying to say is I thought this was a cool video and extremely insightful and perfect for what I was searching for and having difficulty finding when it came to information. I know people get creeped out and weird about it but they really are tasty for bread and just some of the best looking flowers I have ever grown

Yes! They need cool temps to establish.
I'm in Zone 5A we just got yet another snow storm and are having subzero temps on and off as well as the ground is still pretty much frozen. When do you suggest I plant them. I'm having a hard time deciding when to plant my seeds this year since I don't have many seeds left from my favorite flowers over the years and I really want harvest as many seeds as I can this year so I can replenish my seed supply so my flower gardens will finally be at their full potential.
Probably mid-April? But check with your local extension service. I used to throw poppy seeds into the snow when I lived in Michigan.

I'm in zone 7b. I just bought poppy seeds and the packet says to plant in March. Isn't that much too late? I was going to try to sow them now in February. What is your advice? The type I purchased are Shirley Double Mix.
Yes the packet info is always for zone 5. I would sow now while it’s still cold.

I’ll plant them today just to be safe along with my milkweed. Could a packet of poppies ever come cold stratified already? If so, how would you know? It is NOT illegal to grow poppies as an ornamental. It is imperative however that you do not score the seed heads, as that is illegal. I do not address questions regarding any other purpose for growing poppies beyond their ornamental attributes.

In my experience, yes it is too late. That being said, you can still try! If they don’t grow then you will know for certain that fall planting is best.

I doubt it. You should look to local resources. I’ve never lived in Arizona and definitely cannot give good advice on gardening there.

I am surprised, though, about the compost, since I thought that poppies like poor soil. But I will do it. Oh, huh, I just looked it up -- what kind of soil poppies prefer -- and I got every answer possible! I've only had a few perennial poppy plants for just two seasons, and this is my very first experience in any way with annual poppies.

We live in zone 7 in King George Virginia, I purchased red corn poppy seed online last year but it was too late to plant them. On January 2nd of this year we created a small raised bed of soil with a light layer of soil conditioner on top and sprinkled the seed like you recommend. The area is sunny and we have received plenty of moisture but I have yet to see any germination. Should I have stored the seeds in the fridge or do I need to be patient?

Generally if they haven’t germinated in 3 weeks they won’t, but it may be that your soil temps are cold. Wait a bit longer. I always recommend storing seeds in the refrigerator to extend their viability so in the future stash them there.

Yes…. That’s what we used to do in zone 5 Michigan. I’m assuming the snow you gave will melt soonish and you experience some temp fluctuations? Above freezing in daytime?

I have started echinacea this way but I covered the seeds with a large water bottle or milk jugs. I cut the bottoms off, leave the top off, and make other ventilation holes as well. It helps with the leaves and other types of debris. This is a great visual, thank you!
I pant them and something told me to let them surface a little.. I have a ton I planted so some are surface and others are a little under the soil.. I have a ton of seeds so enough to plant. Can't wait for them to grow. And hey kitty!

Yes! I have accidentally green poppies in containers and they did well. Maybe not as tall as the in ground plants but they did flower. And yes worm castings are great for poppies and everything!
