  • We use well water here at the house and it taste great! There is only one issue, lots of Sediment. I purchased the Rusco Sediment Trapper with 100 mesh stainless steel filter to take care of the problem. In this video I install and test the Rusco pre-filter. I sure enjoy your channel! Tip: if you moved the filters to be in line ahead of the P tank, you will certainly need to check and clean the filters on a VERY regular basis. It works either way, but if you want to keep sediment out of the P tank and make the move, be sure to watch those filters! If a filter plugs up ahead of the P tank, the pump can run away and that's not good. Also, be aware that PVC shrinks with age. All PVC. Those sched 80 nipples will shrink and loosen. May not leak, but you'll notice the filters can spin around on the thread as you are changing the cartridges down the road. Brass nipples are the only way to go in that application. The PVC fittings (such as the body of the filter housings and/or the union) will shrink as well, so if you had put brass nipples, the connections simply get tighter with age as the threads close up on the brass. And in conclusion ( :-) ), Bend your PEX. Hmm, good name for a band? Bend the PEX around all your corners, don't us 90 fittings. Each fitting slows the flow, and PEX, as great as it is, doesn't flow the same as copper. One reason is the tiny little holes which the water has to squeeze through on all the fittings. That Sharkbite press-on fitting you used is an exception: it grips the outside of the tube AND has a larger bore as well. The PEX corner thingies are called "Plastic Polymer PEX Pipe 90-Degree Bend Support with Mounting Bracket." They are about eighty cents each in a bag of fifty from a supply house, a LOT more from Lowes/Home Depot. They come with and without a tab which allows you to fasten them to something. www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/1000/d8/d86fa0b1-308e-4510-9307-c06d339d3154_1000.jpg

      Always filter after pressure tank. Before would restrict flow and possibly cause pump damage.

    I put one in our system when I built our Well House a while back. It's GREAT!! It has changed my filter life from about a month to three months. We have a lot of black sand sediment in our well water. Edited to add: Look at that crisp footage! :)

    Those clear filter housings have a tendency to crack, be sure to keep a couple of spares around at all times. You do not have a bypass loop going around your filter system so when that housing cracks you’ll need to turn off the water to the house and change it out right quick. If that housing cracked when you are not around you’re going to have a hell of a flood on your hands so you might want to put a flood stop valve in the line ahead of the filter system

    Great looking system. I'd like you to make a follow-up video with any comments you might make or adjustments to your process. I am in Mexico and have a gravity feed system with water tanks on the roof. About a 12 foot fall to the washing machine. I'm wondering if this system would work with gravity flow system or if it needs the pressure of a captive air system.

    I added one to our house a couple of years ago. I piped the drain on the spin down filter to a new hose bib I installed on the exterior foundation wall. That way all I have to do is turn on the spigot to clean the filter and I don’t even have to crawl under the house. Work smarter, not harder I say.

    Good job. But you should have gotten some silicone grease and greased the "o" ring inside the housing. This will prevent friction from causing you to have a hard time in tightening the housing and possibly damaging the "o" ring.

    One thing that is nice with the SharkBite fittings is they are removable & reusable. A clip is available to remove the fitting. Makes things easy!
    Nice job with the filter. I've been looking at them myself.

    • @kuhrd
      @kuhrd 7 років тому

      Sharkbite fittings are removable but they are not reusable in a permanent installation. They are fine to reuse for test and temporary purposes but they are one-time use for permanent installation since the barbs inside can become damaged and the seals on the fitting may not reseal well enough the second or subsequent times.

    Sediment Trapper look like a good idea.
    In my house I use 2-tier filter one was y-type120MESH 130Micron with Spin-Down,and the other one was 10" long 5 Micron PP filter.
    But if big rain coming the sediment the dirt the sand ......
    I just recently replace one of the filter.
    And my country may not sell filter like Rusco Sediment Trapper.
    May be the next time I replace the filter I will find like rusco one.

    • @LandtoHouse

      Do you mean you have to open it up and clean the filter inside every 20 to 30 days, or just flush it every 20 to 30 days?
      We have a lot of sediment at my house, I'm thinking there's something wrong with my well or tank because it's always sand sediment that gets caught in the spin down filter. My spin down filter is completely blocked after about a week and pressure drops in the house completely by then.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  5 років тому

  • @GreenAcreHomestead

    If you ever go to redo it, put your filters on before your pressure tank. I did this when I moved our tank out from under the house to the well house. We had sediment begin to interfere with the small holes for the pressure switch and pressure gauge. Since redoing it, we've had no issues. Maybe also plan to drain your pressure tank a few times a year to help address any sediment build up. :-)

    • @Michael34SD
      @Michael34SD 7 років тому +4

      I would be careful putting filters before the pressure tank. I asked a licensed plumber about this, and he said it was against code here. He said that the issue is that, if you don't check the filter regularly, the filter can clog, and you can get a pressure build up before the filter. This could cause it to leak/fail, and the pressure switch will just keep calling for more water from the pump, flooding your basement. This would be especially true if you have anything like a sprinkler system, something that might continue to draw water even when you're away from home, such that you could get debris buildup and wouldn't even be in a place to check or clear it.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 років тому

      +nintendolunchbox there are a number of advantages to well water here in the mountains. Much cleaner water no added fluoride or chlorine. The filters have cost a total of $10. The new filter was rather expensive but it will make the filters last three times as long. So I figure over the course of five years it will pay for itself. Water in the town we came from was rather expensive. In the apartment not too bad but my neighbor just up the street was paying $130 a month.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  4 роки тому +3

      According to a local plumber friend of mine it's a very bad idea to put the filter before the pressure switch. If the filter clogs up and prevents pressure from building to Max the relays will tell the pump motor to always be on.

    Just a little tip. Never use a metal male fitting on a plastic female fitting, unless it is sch80 or has some type of steel band embedded on the female adapter. You're applying stress to that plastic fitting which will almost always lead to it eventually cracking.

    Novices use hack saws lol. Get a pvc cutter. Real men use the Ridgid one, but you can get a cheapo at home depot for $10.00 that still cuts clean, straight, and quick. Doesn't the shark bite fitting make the use of a union redundant? Hey anyhow this is a great topic for a video and it's over all very cool! Thanks for sharing your project!

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  5 років тому +1

      There are plenty of ways to cut pvc. I actually use a miter saw for some of my cuts. (I make at least 10 cuts a week and its the fastest way to cut 4" pipe) . I guess that shark bite does have a way to remove the component but you have to have that tool and its annoying. The union is fast and simple. So far this has been a great filter. It does fill up every 3 or so weeks and needs a cleaning.

I found a PEX-specific cutter from Lowes and worked to make sure my cuts were clean and 90 degrees. Used the Shark-bite fittings. No leaks when I finished! Thanks for showing the union - super handy to know about. I'll probably be hacking up some PVC in the near future.
