Well Chlorination Warning Tip

  • I recently chlorinated my home well water because the water was starting to smell like rotten eggs. This fixed the problem but i accidentally clogged my water filter and killed the water pressure in the home. I explain what happened in the video.
    Other Tips, Make sure to add the chlorine carefully down the side of the well and put a hose 3-4 ft into the well to flush it for about 1/2 hr. Don't want the chlorine sticking to the sides of your well vs going down into the well. There is a good video link on how to flash a dinking water well at www.drinkingwaterspecialists.com.

    I appreciate the info, thank you. I just would recommend running the water down your driveway in the future rather than into the woods.

    You had some good mentions. I did notice the braided hose used for a water line, which I wouldn't recommend and also I wouldn't recommend throwing a new filter on the floor which will be used to filter the water people will drink. Thank you for the sincere video for others to learn from.

      Exactly about not putting the filter on the ground and also don't touch it. Use brand new nitrile gloves, and if you've touched anything else that isn't guaranteed clean, take off the glove and get a new one! Just touching it could re-infect the whole system with bacteria.

    You need an Iron Curtain/ Iron filter, chlorinating is just a band aid. Chlorine wont get rid of Sulphur for long. If your Sulfur is really bad use peroxide. Use chlorine pellets (Small ones like the size of altoids) instead of liquid bleach, the pellets will sink into the well, the liquid will just sit on top, make sure you run a hose down your well after dropping those tablets down as well, this will save you against ruining your well pump if tablets landed on top of the pump and also circulate the water in the well. There is also a powder you can buy online, that one works very well. Remember though, this is just a temporary fix. Also, get rid of that slimline filter. You shouldnt need a carbon filter on a well, carbon wont really take care of sulfur since it needs to be oxidized to be removed. If anything put a pleated filter after the softener so it doesnt plug up as quick. Hope that helps!

    Depending on how your well is setup, inside vs outside, you might consider doing an open discharge of the well AFTER you have already flushed the system throughout your house. If the problems seem to be continuing, disconnecting your tank at a union and safely directing the water to a lawn or open area and just run water out of the well for a while. Without back pressure you get a ton of volume and can really agitate the well. We have to do this when installing a pump into a new well. This gets the bigger troublesome debris from the drilling process out before asking any other filter to bare the burden of daily gunk.

    yeah, in learning the process of installing my own shallow well, I quickly went from a single stage filter to a three stage filter system. clogged the first carbon filter with sand in the first week. Now, most of the sand has settled and what little comes through gets stopped in the much cheaper sediment filter. Also, had a metallic taste in the water. filtered it and corrected it a little. Then, only after the filter, started getting sulfur gas out of the hose connection. Had to shock the well with bleach. fixed the problem. A new well must be disinfected. My well is 25 feet deep with 10 feet of water. All PVC. Only metal is the pump, two one inch 90s and 12 inches of galvanized pipe. Will be no corrosion in the ground. Even the sand point is PVC. There is a trick to getting it down below the water table though. Have to insert casing when you hit the water table then beat it the rest of the way with a sledge hammer. Just a couple feet at a time and flush the loose sand as you go. Don't forget to drill a bunch of small holes in about a 4 ft section of your first well casing section. I drilled 1,440 holes in mine about a sixteenth big each a quarter inch space around and one inch down to the next ring. Good luck.

      I always love to hear these stories.. The first thing you got to know is that you do not know. Your perspective at a technical application is only reliving if you have cross reference knowledge on the matter. So if you know that you don’t know. Than you know. Then you know to research the matter and then you know…

      The water in the well nearest the surface is the dirtiest and or most likely to get contaminated. Better to get a professional to drill a deaper well, hopefully below the first aquifer, into a deeper cleaner aquifer. Our water district wells go down 300-1000 feet deep. There is a bentonite seal between the aquifer layers, so that the water from the upper aquifers don't contaminate the lower aquifers, then it is also plugged with cement from then on up. As for drilling the holes, those holes may get clogged, it would be better to get a pipe that is made for this purpose from a well supply store, it is called well screen and has slits, thousands of them. Outside the well pvc in the screened area, use a well grade sand, I think we used Monterey sand # 3 but it has been a long time, a well supply company would know.

    If that filter was black when you put it in that filter is for order and taste, it's charcoal and NOT meant for sediment The order and taste should be located after the softener and sediment. The whites are for sediment. I've had a well for over 50 years and chlorinate probably every 2-3 years. The sediment filter i use (to protect) softener is 1 micron. I also have a UV on the system just before the water enters the domestic water supply, very effective!

    if you are randomly getting bacteria in your well after testing you have a crack in your casing or a potential backflow issue. an egg smell is indicative of sulfur in the water which is natural. sulfur is also a natural antibacterial and should lower any potential backflow bacteria into the system. unless this is a new well you should not be clorinating ever. a properly sealed well will remain clean practically forever unless it is not sealed properly or has backflow issues.

    • @TomMortonAdventure
      @TomMortonAdventure  7 років тому +4

      There was a back flow issue here, High magnesium in the water ate the galvanized fitting holding the pump. Replaced with brass. Part of the problem was also the water heater. We had a bacterial reaction with the anode. Replaced with a powered anode and problems were gone. Thanks for the comment, thats good information i am sure others here will find helpful.

      David Lloyd Thank You for that information! I bought my home 17 years ago have the egg smell, Yuck! The past two winters, my water has been freezing and nobody can figure out why. Also, the pressure to my house fluctuates throughout the day and it's driving me CRAZY! I've talked to all the locals as well as the guy who installed my new pump (17 years ago when I bought the house) and nobody can figure out what's causing the frozen pipes or pressure fluctuations. You sound knowledgeable, do you have any ideas on what would suddenly be causing it? ( I don't share my well) Thanks for any info you may have :)

  • @markcarey5673
    @markcarey5673 5 років тому +1

    I'm not sure where to begin but I do have a couple of points. Number one: if you have a rotten egg smell from the water coming out of your taps that is Sulfur not bacteria and all the Clorox in the world isn’t going to get rid of it. Next, and this is a huge one, you don't purge your well through the plumbing inside your house. You attach a long garden hose to an outside tap and you purge through that hose for as long as it takes to clear the chlorine. If you have your own well you no doubt have a septic tank and leach field. Running that much chlorine through your septic tank will kill all the bacteria in it rendering it useless. It is HIGHLY unlikely that there was any significant amount of bacteria in your well, certainly not enough to have “Die-off” issues. Before doing anything like shocking your drinking water well always have the water tested.

    WARNING: Just touching the inside of a pipe can add microbes that will multiply exponentially, so use brand new clean gloves and change them often. DON'T touch the new filter with bare hands if you plan on using it, especially as shown in this video at around 3:00 where he first grabbed the filthy used filter first. And DON'T throw the new filter on the ground. Now he should disinfect that filter prior to use, prior to putting it into his disinfected system. Good video otherwise, nice tips!

    could all that stuff, that clogged your filter, clog your drain pipes and fill up the septic tank? I am wondering if some kind of screen, filter should be put over the drains.

    • @TomMortonAdventure
      @TomMortonAdventure  9 років тому

      +LindyTN The stuff that clogged the filter was extremely fine, probably not big enough to clog a drain or cause any problems.. The largest particulates came out within the first flush through the system and they could clog screens in faucets. I think it depends on the age and type of system as to how much stuff will come out. If you are concerned it probably would be a good idea to do when first flushing the faucets. I had some larger rust particulates settle in the sinks during the first flush that i wiped out. I am sure some went down the drains tho.

    Hello. Quick Dumb question, Do I Need to Cut the Power to The Pump Before I Add the Chlorine Additives?

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove 8 років тому

      Technically no, It is usually a good idea however because once you remove the Cap you will usually be exposing the wire connections that run down to the pump. You will be pouring the chlorine solution right by the wires and you really don't want to accidentally short them to ground with you standing right there. I would recommend it but it is not necessary for the chlorination process.

    what about a water softener will the disenfectiong affect the softener?

    • @TomMortonAdventure
      @TomMortonAdventure  8 років тому

      I guess I forgot to mention that.... Chlorine should not hurt the water softener unless it is much to concentrated. The bacterial die off however could clog it up. Usually the flush cycle cleans them out pretty well but I bypassed the softener for the flush of the house. All softeners should have a bypass at the manifold.

    • @bradpeters6076
      @bradpeters6076 8 років тому +1

      You will want to bypass your softener. Chlorine can break down the seals in the valve, and also break down the resin in the softener tank.
