This episode was once the Squidward torture [naughty word] started to become a regular staple in SpongeBob's episodes, and this one is just one of the meanest, crulest, and just plain unfair of them all.
I'd like to share a story. The story of a young boy named Phillip who watched this episode when he was five or six (this happened almost a decade ago though, so take my account with a grain of salt, since it is pretty hazy). He enjoyed the first half, probably because he found the red paint part funny and/or because Squidward does something about the situation. However, the moment the security system registered Squidward as a threat and turned into a giant robot and destroyed Bikini Bottom, he became confused. And when Squidward got punished for it, despite it not being his fault, he started crying. Almost a decade later, his opinion largely has not changed, except his penchant for crying fits has since faded. Admittedly, Phillip has high-function autism, but the same issues he had could most likely be shared by an ordinary kid.

Indeed, this episode was one of the worst Squidward tortured episodes. He just wanted to have a pleasant day off and then Spongebob and Patrick think they can enhance it when really they should just go somewhere else and enjoy their own Sunday. The robot at the end came out of nowhere. It just came off as lazy writing.
@@nickgadson266 I can't think of this episode as one of the worst Squidward torture episodes is because Spongebob and Patrick actually apologize to Squidward. Most Squidward torture episodes that came later don't depict them as having any guilt for what they've done in the episode.

But here Spongebob and Patrick cause Squidward in this episode emotional pain, its their fault for letting Squid do community service at the end, and annoying him through out the episode. And Jellyfishing was a Squid Torture Episode that was good, because it was funny, while Good Neighbors was annoying. And one thing pls respect people's opinions on Modern Spongebob. And also rewatch modern Spongebob episodes that are bad, so that you see why those episode like A Pal For Gary are bad.
Myku Villareal I agree Spongebob and Patrick were being annoying, but later in the episode, they just came to apologize to Squidward for bugging him so much, even making him a cake. If he had just accepted it, the security system wouldn’t have gone out of control, and Squidward wouldn’t have gotten sentenced to community service. I never really minded watching A Pal for Gary. Spongebob’a ignorance was actually supposed to funny, but backfired on the writers’ part because of how it played out.

In the pre movie episodes, Squidward would usually get hurt for things he started and it would sometimes be karma and deserved. But here and a lot of the episodes after, he got tortured for just being Squidward and he would become the antagonist if he stood up for himself. Very annoying.
Except that wouldn't work since the Real Estate Agent said she wouldn't sell his house even if he was "The Last SQUIDWARD on Earth." (Does this episode count as a squidward torture?)
He never sold his house in that episode though, although it was kind of completely blown up so I guess that's besides the point. Not sure why I forgot about that episode. Yeah, he's screwed regardless.
We all have that "one episode" that makes us think a show was going bad. For me, Spongebob's one episode was this one. Even as a kid I did not like it. Spongebob and Patrick were annoying, Squidward was being punished for wanting to be left alone was...kinda sad, the house thing was just stupid, and the fact that the city punished Squidward because it was his house is even more stupid! It's like arresting someone because their gun was used to shoot a person...after the fingerprints came back negative!

I used to hate this episode, but now I realized that there are some things I like. I like that SpongeBob and Patrick are trying to help him, but the problem is that they keep breaking into his house. I also like the painting scene, which is kind of cool and funny. I love the scene where he yells at them, that's scary and funny at the same time. I also think it's funny when he says "Intruder alert, intruder alert!" I also like the idea of a Good Neighbor Lodge. The way he says "The idiots took my house!" is pretty funny. It's creepy and funny at the same time time when he goes "Ooh..." as points his tentacles in spongebob and patricks direction. I also think it's funny when he jumps on his hands. Now for the downsides. Squidward is tortured for NO REASON. His house randomly turns into a robot. Spongebob and patrick keep breaking into his house. Overall, I think this episode is between ok and good, but i totally get why so many people hate it, and I as I said before, I used to also. But opinions are opinions.
I HATE this episode, it is the worst of season 4, one of my least favorite out of the entire series, and what I think started the downfall of the series.

After your crossover with Mr. Enker, I started watching his vids, mainly the spongebob ones. And damn, with the unholy abominations in store for you, I wouldn't be surprised if you had to come up with a rating lower then Scumbob to do them justice.
I understand your rage for this episode, but let me note something. This is everyone's fault. Patrick and Spongebob are trying to be good neighbors to Squidward, and even if he wants to enjoy a sunday afternoon alone, why cant he just allow spongebob and patrick and enjoy it together? Squidward wants them away but that keeps driving spongebob and patrick TO him rather than welcoming him into his house. None of them are justified in this episode, but Squidward gets most of the torture. Even when Spongebob wanted to apologize, squidward could have accepted, calmed down a little, and maybe even enjoy the cake with Spongebob and Patrick. Instead, squidward wanted them OUT because he thought they were gonna do something wrong. In this episode, the torture is not as bad as other episodes because spongebob and patrick are just trying to be genuinely good to squidward. Spongebob And Patrick werent even real threats to the security system, but Squidward didnt see that. Spongebob and Patrick are not innocent either, not being able to take the message to GO AWAY and stay away from Squidward. But that being said, Squidward has no reason to complain whatsoever because of his wasted sunday. It could have easily been a good sunday with better character treatment, maybe they could chill together, bond some more, and have that delicious cake. Your rage is also mines toward this episode, but it's not AS bad as other squidward tortures, that being said, it still is one in itself. Good Neighbors is a bad episode because Squidward received the torture when Spongebob and Patrick were just trying to be good to him, and Squidward was all like a salty 12 year old who just wants to be alone. Spongebob turned off the security system on code red mode, thus resolving the episode's problem. And I think the punishment for community service at the end is fitting. Spongebob and Patrick receive it too, and SQUIDWARD was the one who hit the machine, tipped the cake over and made it go code red. All I am trying to say, is that EVERYONE is at fault here, but this is a problem with a easy resolution. Have a good sunday, and chill with some friends. Even if Spongebob and Patrick made a club together, it was all about being good neighbors and if everyone complied, if they all had a good sunday together, watching tv, drinking some tea/soda, that'd at least be better than a sunday of, getting polkadotted in the face, and everything else that happened to Squidward. This resolution would at LEAST make the episode fit its title, GOOD. NEIGHBORS.
This reminds me of a Rugrats episode that aired just a couple years before this one. It was called "Early Retirement" and most of it was just the babies inadvertently bothering Angelica while she was trying to watch her favorite show. She does and says literally nothing to hurt the babies. All she wants to do is watch her show. 🤦♀️

True but I think the payback torture went way too far. Besides at the end SpongeBob and Patrick also got punished by the town so I'm not sure if they were getting payback on Squidward.
This isn’t a very good episode, but episodes like Squid Wood and Cephalopod Lodge are much, much worse than this one. I pretty much agree with the points here; the part I didn’t like that seems to be omitted is the fact that according to Squidward it’s 7:30pm when his house becomes a robot, and throughout the entire episode it doesn’t even look like it’s becoming night, or even dusk.?? The part that makes me not feel that this is the worst episode of Season 4 is that Spongebob and Patrick give him an apology cake (similarly how they did in Squidville) with it saying “Sorry for bugging you so much”. But Squidward refuses to accept it and orders the machine to destroy them, when the machine doesn’t, due to the fact that it’s correct that there is no threat, he starts banging on the machine and zaps him, causing what happens after to happen. I agree, the robot part didn’t make sense. Simply, if Squidward had accepted the apology cake and then ordered them to leave, none of what comes next would have happened. If this was a now or a Season 6-7 episode, it would have been that Squidward accepts the cake, then something happened in which because of Spongebob and Patrick the cake gets ruined, making Squidward order the machine to destroy them, justifying his determination for the machine to work. Anyway, if Good Neighbours, Squid Wood, Cephalopod Lodge and Squid’s Visit were on the Meh cliff and about to be thrown into the ScumBob chasm, I would have thrown all of them off, ignoring Squid Wood’s cry for forgiveness, throwing a rope to Cephalopod Lodge and Squid’s Visit and left them dangling over the cliff by a single rope. Lastly, I would have thrown 2 ropes to Good Neighbours, leaving it dangle by 2 ropes. I would definitely put Good Neighbours in the Bottom 5 for Season 4, but not as the #1 worst episode of that Season.
This is my least favorite episode of season 4. I felt so bad for Squidward, and it makes me depressed that SB and Patrick kept heckling him for a bad reason. This episode is definately the opposite of "Good" Neighbors. I sometimes want to just relax too, but someone gets in the way, so I know what it's like when you want time off, but then some jerk just bothers you for no reason. I've seen worse, but this was the episode that would become the source of episodes like Boating Buddies. -_-
Yes, make more of these rants. I want to hear your full opinion on all of these scumbob episodes. However, you don't have to do, "I was a Teenage Gary" if you don't want to. Out of all the scumbob episodes there are, that one is the most forgiving.
Well, SpongeBob came into Squidward's house without permission (even though his intentions were in good faith.) But Squidward had every right to yell at SpongeBob and kick him out of his house for breaking and entering.

Yes - I know this episode is bad. This was the one that made me realize that Spongebob and Patrick just need to get their own lives and leave Squidward alone. Particularly because - I'm an Introvert; I like being alone - it helps my creative process. And after three years of middle school and four years of high school, I know how irritating it is when MORONS just won't take a hint that you want them to leave you alone. (And because of it, I've become a rather bitter anti-social recluse) That basically put me in Squidward's shoes in this episode, and every episode since. Hell, I even think he's justified with giggling evilly when he discovers the security system. It's easy for someone to push you far enough that you get "giddy" at the thought of them getting hurt. However, I do have kind of affinity for this episode. For the one thing, it's the sister episode to Skill-Crane - which I love; so I associate that episode with this one. Also - and this is a personal reason, for me, the highlight of the episode is after Squidward's house rampages through the city; Squidward realizes that he just can't catch a break and politely asks Spongebob and Patrick to leave. When they try to stay behind, and he wants to hear none of it, he delivers what would be my favorite line from the series. "GET OUT OF MY HOOOOUSE!!!" While that line should really be Squidward's catchphrase and not really anything special, the angered face that Squidward is making, the way the voice actor delivered it, and the fact that his tone and volume are powerful enough to send Spongebob and Patrick flying away...just makes me smile. It's almost like a small victory in a way. Unfortunately, the smile is destroyed in the following scene when Squidward gets that Community Service summons. I can only hope since he doesn't do any beyond this episode, that he got a really good lawyer and got off.
Even when I was a kid and Spongebob was good I felt that sometimes Squidwards behavior was sometimes justified. It would really suck to be neighbors with more current Spongebob and Patrick.

At a young age, this was the first ever episode I hated. By the point I first watched it, there were seasons 1-4 and 5 was on the way. This episode is really mean and unfair. There is one point you forgot, the robot at the end was the plot device there to destroy the city, therefore delivering the final blow to Squidward. This episode is bad but I get the impression it wasn't supposed to be made like that, like it wasn't supposed to play like that. Maybe they just forgot to place the part where Squidward did something wrong or maybe they tried to make Spongebob and Patrick look like the antagonists but messed it up. I don't know, this one is bad but it I don't have TOO much against it probably because by the time I saw this episode, there were some that did worse. I think that almost all Squidward torture episodes would have been better if the ending had given every character what they deserve. Yeah... I agree, it is a Scumbob episode but there are some that took this plot and dug it deeper.
Oddly enough, as a teenager, Iiked this episode but I knew Spongebob and Patrick were in the wrong. My sister and I agreed that Spongebob and Patrick were bad neighbors.
It’s also frustrating that SpongeBob and Patrick just break into Squidward’s house in the later seasons when in the earlier seasons they would politely knock on his door instead of just breaking and entering his house. Now I’m not going to say that they never broke into Squidward’s house occasionally like in Opposite Day they did. But what about in episodes like Jellyfishing where they knock on Squidward’s door and then ask if he would go jellyfishing and same thing in SB-129, sure they were still pestering Squidward about going jellyfishing but it doesn’t get to the point of it being infuriating and in the episode Snowball Effect after SpongeBob basically Gatling Gunned a bunch of snowballs into Patrick’s mouth Patrick does knock to ask Squidward if he could use his bathroom. So yeah, whatever happened to SpongeBob and Patrick actually going to Squidward’s house the polite way instead of just breaking and entering?

The spongebob dynamic would be that squidward would act cocky and arrogant around spongebob who is just being nice and this would backfire on squidward making it funny, all the while keeping squidward a likeable character. This episode is kind of fascinating because it's the opposite - spongebob and Patrick arent nice they're just annoying and squidward is reacting like a normal guy would - it's an example of flanderisation, and most shows die once the characters get flanderised, this is my least favourite spongebob episode, it's like the absolute opposite of the camping episode - they should be compared, the camping episode for how to do the spongebob squidward dynamic right and good neighbour's for how not to do it
If I was SpongeBob's dad, I would have grounded him for 1 month with no Going outside (except worktime/for work) and hanging out with friends for doing all of these to Squidward.

Question: How many good STP's are there that are NOT bad in modern-season? I'll TRY and start, I didn't find "That Sinking Feeling" too bad. The plot was AMAZING and I kind of like some of the comedy, especially the count-to-three part and the "Eat at the Krusty Krab" thing.
What? That Sinking Feeling is his most hated S7 episode? Really did not see that one coming. But I do think That Sinking Feeling is terribly underrated. And BTW, Patrick! The Game is pretty good in my opinion, but the sister episode is kinda boring (forgot the name)
This has to be the worst episode of season 4 and also one of the worst episodes ever in the entire franchise. SpongeBob and Patrick are really annoying and idiots in the episode. It's one of those Squidwards torture episode. I feel bad for Squidward in this episode and town just punished him basically so this is one of the worst SpongeBob episodes ever and the worst Squidward torture episode ever.
This feels much more like a Season 6 episode. I don't get how it's in the same season as far superior episodes like The Lost Mattress and Skill Crane where Squidward is actually written correctly instead of just being abused and ruined for the sake of slapstick.
One thing I will give this episode credit for is that Spongebob and Patrick (briefly) try to get Squidward's house to stop. In the countless Squidward torture episodes that came later, those two barnacleheads seldom, if ever attempt to defuse the situation.
This episode is so overhated. At least in this episode Squidward has finally has had enough and puts his foot down on Spongebob and Patrick in this episode, AND FINALLY GETS THROUGH TO THEM, which is something Squidward is rarely ever able to do in Post Movie. Plus, Spongebob and Patrick apologize to Squidward and even attempt to do something Nice for him. Is this episode Bad? Yeah. But I can think of a bunch of other Season 4 episodes that are WAYY worse than this one. Like The Thing. Squidward goes through so much worse in this episode for nearly the exact same reasons as in Good Neighbors. Also unlike Good Neighbors, Squidward isn't even able to fight back which makes the episode incredibly painful to watch. And throughout the whole episode Squidward is trying to cry for help, but knows that he can't get out of his situation. In Good Neighbors, yeah his abuse is unfair, but at least he is able to get revenge. (Or at least try to) The Thing is literally bottom 5 material in my opinion. I hate it with a burning passion.
The Thing is my least favorite episode of the whole show. Not only is the episode unfair to Squid, the design of Smelly makes me cringe. Just the way his cheeks bulge out and his terrified screams make it legitimately hard for me to watch.
The only way I can really rationalize this episode is that this is Squidward's nightmare, or how he perceives his own life. That is, seeing himself as an innocent victim and his neighbors as impossibly stupid, childish jerks whose sole purpose is to annoy him to no end. There's really no other plausible explanation for the painful flanderization Spongebob and Patrick undergo in this episode...
"Squidward's emotions are never taken in regard." Are you kidding? What about when they presented to him the apology cake, yet Squidward still wanted to dispose of them. And really, them ruining his day were actually out of their intensions. They were really trying to be good neighbors and raise Squidward up granting his requests in attempt of making things better, but instead making things worse without realizing. But when Squidward yelled at them the message got across and they felt bad so that's when they tried to make up for it but Squidward wouldn't accept it. So you probably can't exactly say a bit of it wasn't on Squidward as well.
I agree. I'm so tired of people accusing SB and Pat, especially SB of having no rguard for his feelings when it's obvious that they do. Plus, there are times when Squidward has no reguard for their feelings especially SB, yet no one seems to say anything about that!
It was a tiny bit squid ward, but mostly spongebob and patrick. They were trying to be good neighbors, but they kept breaking into squid wards house. They did make him an apology cake, but the house turned into a robot because spongebob and patrick kept breaking into his house, so he had to get a security system. That and the horrible ending were because of spongebob and patrick.
Yes, they shouldn't of kept breaking into is house, that was their fault, but they weren't trying to do anything bad just as you said. At least they felt bad for what they did. I'm still neutral to this episode, it's not good, but no the worst. It's still much better than alot of other Squidward torture eps. imo.

I'm the only one who's not fazed by the toenail scene in house fancy, because my mother got her toenail ripped put once, so she had to cover it up with adhesive bandages until it grew back.

This is why I think Spongebob should have ended after Season 5, as opposed to right after the first movie. Season 5 had a lot of lows, but also some great heights that would have made the season worth it. And the show would have still been remembered as one of the best nicktoons, rather than such a mix bag.

Mixed messages, along with the status freaking quo, is this shows biggest weakness. It perplexes me. What the heck ARE they trying to have us feel? Do they really still think Squidward and Plankton are evil after everything we've seen? And it's not like they could make them sympathetic on accident either. The most logical solution is that maybe the writers often argue on how they should portray something, and then they kinda try to do it both ways? The bad SB episodes are such a mess.
Never liked this episode in general. The Whole Episode was Spongebob and Patrick not respecting Squidward's peaceful day off away from work and all that Squidward wants to do is to relax on sunday. Ending to Good Neighbors was clearly the worst of all time after that Robot House Scene.
Okay, this is a true story. I remember when I first saw this episode back when I was 10 or so and I remember not caring much about it. I didn’t exactly dislike it per say but compared to all the other episode from the first half of season 4, this is the one that I was never looking forward to rewatching. And here’s the thing. On first watch, I immediately noticed how out of character Spongebob and Patrick were acting. Yeah, kids can’t tell the difference my ass. I certainly could. And on first watch I actually thought that this was intentional, that Spongebob and Patrick were actively pretending to be stupid because they had something planned for Squidward, like, I dunno, they were planning a surprise birthday party for him, which was being organized by Mr. Krabs, Sandy and the other characters, while Spongebob and Patrick were trying to distract Squidward and naturally went overboard with their act. And you can imagine my surprise when the ending came and I was like “Wait…..this wasn’t an act? They really were just that stupid? What was up with that?” You heard right, a 10-year-old thought of a better plotline for this episode on first watch than these professional writers.

It's the hypocrisy of the townspeople (yelling at and shunning Squidward for doing what they knowingly did), and Squidward being out of character (in any other episode, he'd never say his pain was worth it). But yeah, Squid Baby is bad too.
Pros and Cons of the ending in Good Neighbors (Season 4 of SpongeBob SquarePants): Pros: 1. SpongeBob and Patrick do get punished, in a way, for their actions towards Squidward throughout the whole episode for ruining his Sunday (even though they seemed too happy about the punishment they got since they get to spend every Sunday with Squidward for the rest of their lives). Cons: 1. Squidward, while didn't do anything wrong in this episode, gets punished at the end of this episode (although to be fair, if he accepted SpongeBob and Patrick's apology cake instead of wanting the security system to kick them out, it he wouldn't have caused the cake to malfunction the security system and most of Bikini Bottom to be destroyed as Squidward, SpongeBob, and Patrick are now forced to repair Bikini Bottom for every Sunday for the rest of their lives).
It's not really "punishment", since it's SpongeBob and Patrick we're talking about. They would likely see community service as a fun activity that gives them an excuse to hang out with Squidward. We literally saw them finding picking up garbage a fun activity in "Mid Life Crustacean". If anything, the former just gives Squidward double punishment.

I'd like to share a story. The story of a young boy named Phillip who watched this episode when he was five or six (this happened almost a decade ago though, so take my account with a grain of salt, since it is pretty hazy). He enjoyed the first half, probably because he found the red paint part funny and/or because Squidward does something about the situation. However, the moment the security system registered Squidward as a threat and turned into a giant robot and destroyed Bikini Bottom, he became confused. And when Squidward got punished for it, despite it not being his fault, he started crying. Almost a decade later, his opinion largely has not changed, except his penchant for crying fits has since faded. Admittedly, Phillip has high-function autism, but the same issues he had could most likely be shared by an ordinary kid.

Indeed, this episode was one of the worst Squidward tortured episodes. He just wanted to have a pleasant day off and then Spongebob and Patrick think they can enhance it when really they should just go somewhere else and enjoy their own Sunday. We all have that "one episode" that makes us think a show was going bad. For me, Spongebob's one episode was this one. Even as a kid I did not like it. Spongebob and Patrick were annoying, Squidward was being punished for wanting to be left alone was...kinda sad, the house thing was just stupid, and the fact that the city punished Squidward because it was his house is even more stupid! It's like arresting someone because their gun was used to shoot a person...after the fingerprints came back negative!

No no no no no no no a million times no. It's not a rating, it's just to indicate that those episodes made it into my top 5 list. That's all.
I used to hate this episode, but now I realized that there are some things I like. I like that SpongeBob and Patrick are trying to help him, but the problem is that they keep breaking into his house. I also like the painting scene, which is kind of cool and funny. I love the scene where he yells at them, that's scary and funny at the same time. I also think it's funny when he says "Intruder alert, intruder alert!" I also like the idea of a Good Neighbor Lodge. The way he says "The idiots took my house!" is pretty funny. It's creepy and funny at the same time time when he goes "Ooh..." as points his tentacles in spongebob and patricks direction. I also think it's funny when he jumps on his hands. Now for the downsides. Squidward is tortured for NO REASON. His house randomly turns into a robot. Spongebob and patrick keep breaking into his house. Overall, I think this episode is between ok and good, but i totally get why so many people hate it, and I as I said before, I used to also. But opinions are opinions.

I understand your rage for this episode, but let me note something. This is everyone's fault. Patrick and Spongebob are trying to be good neighbors to Squidward, and even if he wants to enjoy a sunday afternoon alone, why cant he just allow spongebob and patrick and enjoy it together? Squidward wants them away but that keeps driving spongebob and patrick TO him rather than welcoming him into his house. None of them are justified in this episode, but Squidward gets most of the torture. Even when Spongebob wanted to apologize, squidward could have accepted, calmed down a little, and maybe even enjoy the cake with Spongebob and Patrick. Instead, squidward wanted them OUT because he thought they were gonna do something wrong. In this episode, the torture is not as bad as other episodes because spongebob and patrick are just trying to be genuinely good to squidward. Spongebob And Patrick werent even real threats to the security system, but Squidward didnt see that. Spongebob and Patrick are not innocent either, not being able to take the message to GO AWAY and stay away from Squidward. But that being said, Squidward has no reason to complain whatsoever because of his wasted sunday. It could have easily been a good sunday with better character treatment, maybe they could chill together, bond some more, and have that delicious cake. Your rage is also mines toward this episode, but it's not AS bad as other squidward tortures, that being said, it still is one in itself. Good Neighbors is a bad episode because Squidward received the torture when Spongebob and Patrick were just trying to be good to him, and Squidward was all like a salty 12 year old who just wants to be alone. Spongebob turned off the security system on code red mode, thus resolving the episode's problem. And I think the punishment for community service at the end is fitting. Spongebob and Patrick receive it too, and SQUIDWARD was the one who hit the machine, tipped the cake over and made it go code red. All I am trying to say, is that EVERYONE is at fault here, but this is a problem with a easy resolution. Have a good sunday, and chill with some friends. Even if Spongebob and Patrick made a club together, it was all about being good neighbors and if everyone complied, if they all had a good sunday together, watching tv, drinking some tea/soda, that'd at least be better than a sunday of, getting polkadotted in the face, and everything else that happened to Squidward. This resolution would at LEAST make the episode fit its title, GOOD. NEIGHBORS.
This reminds me of a Rugrats episode that aired just a couple years before this one. It was called "Early Retirement" and most of it was just the babies inadvertently bothering Angelica while she was trying to watch her favorite show. She does and says literally nothing to hurt the babies. All she wants to do is watch her show. 🤦♀️

This isn’t a very good episode, but episodes like Squid Wood and Cephalopod Lodge are much, much worse than this one.
I pretty much agree with the points here; the part I didn’t like that seems to be omitted is the fact that according to Squidward it’s 7:30pm when his house becomes a robot, and throughout the entire episode it doesn’t even look like it’s becoming night, or even dusk.??
The part that makes me not feel that this is the worst episode of Season 4 is that Spongebob and Patrick give him an apology cake (similarly how they did in Squidville) with it saying “Sorry for bugging you so much”. But Squidward refuses to accept it and orders the machine to destroy them, when the machine doesn’t, due to the fact that it’s correct that there is no threat, he starts banging on the machine and zaps him, causing what happens after to happen.
I agree, the robot part didn’t make sense.
Simply, if Squidward had accepted the apology cake and then ordered them to leave, none of what comes next would have happened.
If this was a now or a Season 6-7 episode, it would have been that Squidward accepts the cake, then something happened in which because of Spongebob and Patrick the cake gets ruined, making Squidward order the machine to destroy them, justifying his determination for the machine to work.
Anyway, if Good Neighbours, Squid Wood, Cephalopod Lodge and Squid’s Visit were on the Meh cliff and about to be thrown into the ScumBob chasm, I would have thrown all of them off, ignoring Squid Wood’s cry for forgiveness, throwing a rope to Cephalopod Lodge and Squid’s Visit and left them dangling over the cliff by a single rope. Lastly, I would have thrown 2 ropes to Good Neighbours, leaving it dangle by 2 ropes.
I would definitely put Good Neighbours in the Bottom 5 for Season 4, but not as the #1 worst episode of that Season.
This is my least favorite episode of season 4. I felt so bad for Squidward, and it makes me depressed that SB and Patrick kept heckling him for a bad reason. This episode is definately the opposite of "Good" Neighbors. I sometimes want to just relax too, but someone gets in the way, so I know what it's like when you want time off, but then some jerk just bothers you for no reason. I've seen worse, but this was the episode that would become the source of episodes like Boating Buddies. -_-

Very unpopular opinion but this episode is hilarious in my eyes and always was, especially that scene where squidward yelling at them cracks me up every time I see it lmao

Yes - I know this episode is bad. This was the one that made me realize that Spongebob and Patrick just need to get their own lives and leave Squidward alone. Particularly because - I'm an Introvert; I like being alone - it helps my creative process. And after three years of middle school and four years of high school, I know how irritating it is when MORONS just won't take a hint that you want them to leave you alone. (And because of it, I've become a rather bitter anti-social recluse)
That basically put me in Squidward's shoes in this episode, and every episode since. Hell, I even think he's justified with giggling evilly when he discovers the security system. It's easy for someone to push you far enough that you get "giddy" at the thought of them getting hurt.
However, I do have kind of affinity for this episode. For the one thing, it's the sister episode to Skill-Crane - which I love; so I associate that episode with this one. Also - and this is a personal reason, for me, the highlight of the episode is after Squidward's house rampages through the city; Squidward realizes that he just can't catch a break and politely asks Spongebob and Patrick to leave. When they try to stay behind, and he wants to hear none of it, he delivers what would be my favorite line from the series.
"GET OUT OF MY HOOOOUSE!!!" While that line should really be Squidward's catchphrase and not really anything special, the angered face that Squidward is making, the way the voice actor delivered it, and the fact that his tone and volume are powerful enough to send Spongebob and Patrick flying away...just makes me smile. It's almost like a small victory in a way.
Unfortunately, the smile is destroyed in the following scene when Squidward gets that Community Service summons. I can only hope since he doesn't do any beyond this episode, that he got a really good lawyer and got off.

This episode came right after my favorite episode, "Skill Crane". It was always a dissapointment :/
At a young age, this was the first ever episode I hated. By the point I first watched it, there were seasons 1-4 and 5 was on the way. This episode is really mean and unfair. There is one point you forgot, the robot at the end was the plot device there to destroy the city, therefore delivering the final blow to Squidward. This episode is bad but I get the impression it wasn't supposed to be made like that, like it wasn't supposed to play like that. Maybe they just forgot to place the part where Squidward did something wrong or maybe they tried to make Spongebob and Patrick look like the antagonists but messed it up. I don't know, this one is bad but it I don't have TOO much against it probably because by the time I saw this episode, there were some that did worse. I think that almost all Squidward torture episodes would have been better if the ending had given every character what they deserve. Yeah... I agree, it is a Scumbob episode but there are some that took this plot and dug it deeper.

Oddly enough, as a teenager, Iiked this episode but I knew Spongebob and Patrick were in the wrong. My sister and I agreed that Spongebob and Patrick were bad neighbors.
It’s also frustrating that SpongeBob and Patrick just break into Squidward’s house in the later seasons when in the earlier seasons they would politely knock on his door instead of just breaking and entering his house. Now I’m not going to say that they never broke into Squidward’s house occasionally like in Opposite Day they did. But what about in episodes like Jellyfishing where they knock on Squidward’s door and then ask if he would go jellyfishing and same thing in SB-129, sure they were still pestering Squidward about going jellyfishing but it doesn’t get to the point of it being infuriating and in the episode Snowball Effect after SpongeBob basically Gatling Gunned a bunch of snowballs into Patrick’s mouth Patrick does knock to ask Squidward if he could use his bathroom.
So yeah, whatever happened to SpongeBob and Patrick actually going to Squidward’s house the polite way instead of just breaking and entering?

The spongebob dynamic would be that squidward would act cocky and arrogant around spongebob who is just being nice and this would backfire on squidward making it funny, all the while keeping squidward a likeable character. This episode is kind of fascinating because it's the opposite - spongebob and Patrick arent nice they're just annoying and squidward is reacting like a normal guy would - it's an example of flanderisation, and most shows die once the characters get flanderised, this is my least favourite spongebob episode, it's like the absolute opposite of the camping episode - they should be compared, the camping episode for how to do the spongebob squidward dynamic right and good neighbour's for how not to do it

This episode was also the start of what the series became for Squidward. Just some torture porn episodes with no end and brief upsides if there are any and that’s after enduring a hellish amount of misfortune. I hated stuff like this
But SpongeBob & Patrick realized that they're being unfair to Squidward and made an apology cake saying “Sorry for bugging for you so much” so you're not going to mention that?

I'll TRY and start, I didn't find "That Sinking Feeling" too bad. The plot was AMAZING and I kind of like some of the comedy, especially the count-to-three part and the "Eat at the Krusty Krab" thing.
What? That Sinking Feeling is his most hated S7 episode? Really did not see that one coming. But I do think That Sinking Feeling is terribly underrated. And BTW, Patrick! The Game is pretty good in my opinion, but the sister episode is kinda boring (forgot the name)
This has to be the worst episode of season 4 and also one of the worst episodes ever in the entire franchise. SpongeBob and Patrick are really annoying and idiots in the episode. It's one of those Squidwards torture episode. I feel bad for Squidward in this episode and town just punished him basically so this is one of the worst SpongeBob episodes ever and the worst Squidward torture episode ever.
This feels much more like a Season 6 episode. I don't get how it's in the same season as far superior episodes like The Lost Mattress and Skill Crane where Squidward is actually written correctly instead of just being abused and ruined for the sake of slapstick.

One thing I will give this episode credit for is that Spongebob and Patrick (briefly) try to get Squidward's house to stop.
In the countless Squidward torture episodes that came later, those two barnacleheads seldom, if ever attempt to defuse the situation.

This episode is so overhated. At least in this episode Squidward has finally has had enough and puts his foot down on Spongebob and Patrick in this episode, AND FINALLY GETS THROUGH TO THEM, which is something Squidward is rarely ever able to do in Post Movie. Plus, Spongebob and Patrick apologize to Squidward and even attempt to do something Nice for him. Is this episode Bad? Yeah. But I can think of a bunch of other Season 4 episodes that are WAYY worse than this one. Like The Thing. Squidward goes through so much worse in this episode for nearly the exact same reasons as in Good Neighbors. Also unlike Good Neighbors, Squidward isn't even able to fight back which makes the episode incredibly painful to watch. And throughout the whole episode Squidward is trying to cry for help, but knows that he can't get out of his situation. In Good Neighbors, yeah his abuse is unfair, but at least he is able to get revenge. (Or at least try to) The Thing is literally bottom 5 material in my opinion. I hate it with a burning passion.
The Thing is my least favorite episode of the whole show. Not only is the episode unfair to Squid, the design of Smelly makes me cringe. Just the way his cheeks bulge out and his terrified screams make it legitimately hard for me to watch.
Unpopular opinion: I think this episode is more meh than bad (activates flame shield).

The only way I can really rationalize this episode is that this is Squidward's nightmare, or how he perceives his own life. That is, seeing himself as an innocent victim and his neighbors as impossibly stupid, childish jerks whose sole purpose is to annoy him to no end. There's really no other plausible explanation for the painful flanderization Spongebob and Patrick undergo in this episode...

"Squidward's emotions are never taken in regard." Are you kidding? What about when they presented to him the apology cake, yet Squidward still wanted to dispose of them. And really, them ruining his day were actually out of their intensions. They were really trying to be good neighbors and raise Squidward up granting his requests in attempt of making things better, but instead making things worse without realizing. But when Squidward yelled at them the message got across and they felt bad so that's when they tried to make up for it but Squidward wouldn't accept it. So you probably can't exactly say a bit of it wasn't on Squidward as well.
Compared to the episodes later in the series this one is pretty tame. I just can't hate it
I agree. I'm so tired of people accusing SB and Pat, especially SB of having no rguard for his feelings when it's obvious that they do. Plus, there are times when Squidward has no reguard for their feelings especially SB, yet no one seems to say anything about that!
It was a tiny bit squid ward, but mostly spongebob and patrick. They were trying to be good neighbors, but they kept breaking into squid wards house. They did make him an apology cake, but the house turned into a robot because spongebob and patrick kept breaking into his house, so he had to get a security system. That and the horrible ending were because of spongebob and patrick.
Yes, they shouldn't of kept breaking into is house, that was their fault, but they weren't trying to do anything bad just as you said. At least they felt bad for what they did. I'm still neutral to this episode, it's not good, but no the worst. It's still much better than alot of other Squidward torture eps. imo.

I'm the only one who's not fazed by the toenail scene in house fancy, because my mother got her toenail ripped put once, so she had to cover it up with adhesive bandages until it grew back.

Yep Season 5 was the last straw, to begin the dark era
This is why I think Spongebob should have ended after Season 5, as opposed to right after the first movie.
Season 5 had a lot of lows, but also some great heights that would have made the season worth it.
And the show would have still been remembered as one of the best nicktoons, rather than such a mix bag.

Mixed messages, along with the status freaking quo, is this shows biggest weakness. It perplexes me. What the heck ARE they trying to have us feel? Do they really still think Squidward and Plankton are evil after everything we've seen? And it's not like they could make them sympathetic on accident either.
The most logical solution is that maybe the writers often argue on how they should portray something, and then they kinda try to do it both ways? The bad SB episodes are such a mess.
“Good neighbors” feels more at home in Catdog than Spongebob.
Never liked this episode in general. The Whole Episode was Spongebob and Patrick not respecting Squidward's peaceful day off away from work and all that Squidward wants to do is to relax on sunday. Ending to Good Neighbors was clearly the worst of all time after that Robot House Scene.

Okay, this is a true story. I remember when I first saw this episode back when I was 10 or so and I remember not caring much about it. I didn’t exactly dislike it per say but compared to all the other episode from the first half of season 4, this is the one that I was never looking forward to rewatching. And here’s the thing. On first watch, I immediately noticed how out of character Spongebob and Patrick were acting. Yeah, kids can’t tell the difference my ass. I certainly could. And on first watch I actually thought that this was intentional, that Spongebob and Patrick were actively pretending to be stupid because they had something planned for Squidward, like, I dunno, they were planning a surprise birthday party for him, which was being organized by Mr. Krabs, Sandy and the other characters, while Spongebob and Patrick were trying to distract Squidward and naturally went overboard with their act. And you can imagine my surprise when the ending came and I was like “Wait…..this wasn’t an act? They really were just that stupid? What was up with that?” You heard right, a 10-year-old thought of a better plotline for this episode on first watch than these professional writers.
yea, this episode is my least favprite episode of the series, other than rule of dumb whale of a birthday and wigstruk. but again, i only saw the first 5 or 6 seasons, there might be more bad episodes

ilovenintendo1999 Squid Baby is the only episode of the show that I just CANNOT Watch. why people hate Little Yellow Book more is something I will never understand.
It's the hypocrisy of the townspeople (yelling at and shunning Squidward for doing what they knowingly did), and Squidward being out of character (in any other episode, he'd never say his pain was worth it). But yeah, Squid Baby is bad too.

It's funny, really the only thing I remembered about this episode was that Spongebob and Patrick both where fez hats for no reason.
Pros and Cons of the ending in Good Neighbors (Season 4 of SpongeBob SquarePants):
Pros:
1. SpongeBob and Patrick do get punished, in a way, for their actions towards Squidward throughout the whole episode for ruining his Sunday (even though they seemed too happy about the punishment they got since they get to spend every Sunday with Squidward for the rest of their lives).
Cons:
1. Squidward, while didn't do anything wrong in this episode, gets punished at the end of this episode (although to be fair, if he accepted SpongeBob and Patrick's apology cake instead of wanting the security system to kick them out, it he wouldn't have caused the cake to malfunction the security system and most of Bikini Bottom to be destroyed as Squidward, SpongeBob, and Patrick are now forced to repair Bikini Bottom for every Sunday for the rest of their lives).
It's not really "punishment", since it's SpongeBob and Patrick we're talking about. They would likely see community service as a fun activity that gives them an excuse to hang out with Squidward. We literally saw them finding picking up garbage a fun activity in "Mid Life Crustacean". If anything, the former just gives Squidward double punishment.
I think that the writers were thinking if Squidward yells at Spongebob and Patrick that it's justified.
