I’ve just been on 5 date tour with Dennis as his drum tech. I enjoyed every performance, his power, groove and original interpretations of the tunes. Not to forget a great and humble guy. Thanks Dennis I wont forget this.

I've always been curious about what ride Dennis uses. It has such an interesting finish with brilliant at the bottom and traditional on top.

what ride is that?
Can anyone explain why he switches from traditional to match and vice versa? My understanding is that this has no particular purpose and its done just as a habit. Because you can play powerfully with a traditional grip and softly with matched grip and its certainly not an issue for him.
What a giant of a player!!
I personally think it has to do with ergonomics.. He does it every time he does those triplets in the hi hat and snare, which helps to play more comfortable and also it affect the sound , because the muscle memory let's you control different your out come sound.
Jazz players use traditional for the subtle light touch you can get cuz the weight of the stick is diminished being that your hand is underneath the stick while in matched grip its only your fingers that are underneath the stick...plus it's just fun to work on your weaker hand giving it double the responsibility...plus being a fan of drum history...that's how these guys back in the day played before a drum kit exsisted...it's a feeling thing mostly and its all about just being a versatile drummer in the end
I ask him the same thing a few years back cause I tend to do the same....he told me that it happens when he know he about to make a fill and needs the power of matched grip....I do it because I seem to hit the rims a lot with traditional grip because of my high setup.....

Mainly The A Zlidjian series. The ride is a KCustom Brilliant Ride.
Hi Hats are 13" Mastersound.
isdaisdadaisdais here's what I THINK he is using: 13" A Mastersound Hats ( both cymbals are "bottoms"), A series thin crashes 16", 18", & 17" from left to right on his kit, 22" K Custom Medium Ride, 20" Oriental crash of doom (he designed that cymbal with Zildjian)

So what is different with those shells that makes them Masterworks? They look like Reference drums to me.
You'll find that the shell composition recipes at the end of the video which will help show how this kit is different from a standard Reference Series kit.
Masterworks are also custom drums.
Ah yes, I see they are a bit different. I would be interested to see more successful options on videos like these.
It's nice to be able to have such a say in your drums but possibly easy to make a mistake, do Pearl offer advice on this or maybe info on what has been successfully tried?

John Scofield played with Dennis on a few records. There are some videos on UA-cam from Dennis' instructional DVDs "Serious Moves" and "In The Pocket". But the music is different from what you hear there. Also there is an outstanding video of him playing on Return Of Brecker Brothers. It is also worth seeing definetely.

I love the look of the batter heads but not thrilled with the sound. I'm guessing those are the Evans black chrome?? Not enough highs or "attack" for me. Too bad Remo doesn't make a black chrome Ambassador. :(
Chris Peterson the way you get the "black chrome" look is the clear ply over the ebony ply. The only way to do it in ambassador thickness is to have two super thin plies, that I don't think are even possible to make.
