Taken from new album from Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, ‘Wisdom, Laughter and Lines’ following the critically acclaimed ‘What Have We Become’, which saw them return together on record for the first time since the multi-million selling days of The Beautiful South, who in the 1990s and early 2000s released a string of critically-acclaimed records.
When these two come together it is magic. The lyrics, the tunes, their complementary voices, the orchestration are all brilliant.

Paul Heaton writes songs that are so observational and relatable to ordinary people. Considering he's been successful for over 30 years, he's never lost touch with real things that working people care about. I don't think he lives in a big mansion and owns a Ferrari. I just couldn't imagine it.
People have accused him of being too political, but why shouldn't he have an opinion? I think he just cares about the UK and the shit government we have. And if you have a platform like him and Jaqui with their music, it makes people think.....hopefully. Because his lyrics are sometimes justifiably vitriolic, but he if you listen to If I May, he can be so sweet.

For me, he's the quintessential British Man and you're right, he has as much right to a point of view as the next man. If he were to drive a Ferrari, I'm sure it would be a three wheeler. Bollocks to it, his songs still ring true to me and 'Double Bollocks with Sugar on Top' to anyone who disagrees! We all have a right to a point of view.

These guys aren’t that well known in Australia. I stumbled upon a Beautiful South CD years ago and have listened to them ever since. So bloody good.

I have been a big fan since the 1990 when I first heard " a little time" describing exactly what it felt like when my boyfriend of 6 years broke up with me "to think things over" and 6 months later wanted to come back and after much painful soul searching on my part I decided just like in your song to say no to him. All my family wanted me to take him back and this song really spoke to me and made me feel I'm not the only one who has had a similar painful breakup. I very much appreciate your unique ability to write thoughtful lyrics from both the male and female perspectives.

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott compliment each's vocal range! From the House Martins, Beatutiful South to a duo, cannot shy away from the sound as it picks up out of the darkness. Paul's songs may be cheesy and syrical, but, have meaning, Paul from the Wirral and Jacqui from St Helens, they get my thumbs up more times than, the singers of the day who only last 2 years, these 2 have been going for at least 3 decades
Been a fan all my life. Woken up on Saturday mornings listening to the record player with a new housemartins single or album/beautiful south that my brother had bought as I was only about 8yrs old at the time.
Been to concerts and loved them.
Now heading for 50 listening to old and new tonight, smile all over my face 👍

Terrific song. The best songwriters in the UK in my opinion. So glad they are back together writing again. Still remember accidentally catching Paul Heaton playing a small pub in Ullapool on his bicycle marathon in 2012.

I went to Hull when I were about 18, my mate met a lovely girl called Lisa, stayed for the weekend after running out of petrol, her Father had a recording studio which is where the housemartins first recorded, I was told, happy days!

Saw these two brilliant singers in concert a week ago (first time) wow are they sooo good ,what performances Paul is the ultimate storyteller with a soulful voice and Jacqui has the best female voice ever the two compliment each other long my they perform 💕

can i just say, i have been to lot of festivals, seen a good number of acts live, including Ed Sheeran, Passenger, all that was T in the park 2016/17....the list goes on, but none and i mean none! come close to these guys at Stockport football ground 2019 AMAZING!!!!!!! OK I'm 47 so i grew up with the house martins and Beautiful south... but my god they are sooooooooo gooood !!!

Haven't heard much of the solo stuff outside of the Beautiful South but you can see the magic there!. Good track...these two are a ray of sunshine in an increasingly devoid world of talent and great tunes...
This song has been stuck in my head for several years now. I discovered The Beautiful South around 1990 at a Tower Records store in Los Angeles. The cover of the first two albums stood out to me so I bought them on sight. Loved it from the first piano notes on Song for Whoever and it just kept getting better. It wasn't until I heard his voice that I realized he was the singer from the Housemartins (who did get some play on college radio in the 80s, whereas the Beautiful South never was known here). Anyway, I think this song is as good as the best Beautiful South or Housemartins song. I love how I am aging along with them.
