  • As bass amp modeling technology advances, the necessity of bringing an amp at all is in question. In this #gigvlog, I explain how you can ditch your amp entirely (as long as you have a good monitoring system).

Would you ditch your amp if you could?

We played small venues so I ditched the amp. I still use amp head for DI, tho. We also use in ears for communication and extra monitoring, I like that setup atm. It’s clean and does the job really well. 👍🏻

Happened several times for me due to small stages. It has the advantage to get a more consistent monitoring. My own amp needs to be angled upwards, so I could hear it.

For guitar yes because of amp modellers. For bass no because my darkglass has the compressor, DI , EQ , distortion.

Very informative video answering many of the questions I've had about IEMs. Thanks for taking the time to share this.

I've only been playing a couple of years and with a band for a year now and I've never needed my amp. I built a nice pedal board with a couple of preamp/DIs and haven't missed the amp at all. There's been a couple of times where the on stage wedges were kind of weak, but could still hear everything. We haven't gone to IEM yet, but I've been trying to advocate for it. Only having my bass and my pedalboard bag makes going to and from gigs so much easier.

My band has been "no amps on stage" for years (2012 at least). It saves your hearing and there's no heavy cabs or amps to lug around after the gig. The wedges give you all of the "stage volume" you need.

Solid advice! Giving control to the engineer is almost always the best thing to do. A lot of practice amps have enough power to over-amplify a single voice well over the main mix so your engineer is likely to compensate for that by turning that voice down. It's a good way to sabotage yourself and never learn any better. Thanks for the vids!

I like the ampless, but in-ear maybe not so much. The stage monitors give you all the sound and air movement one will ever need. We play in small gigs anyways on small stages so ampless and just monitors works well. If we mush (as some venues do not either have stage monitors or ones that work well) we have little amps/monitors.

    AMP without an amp 😳😳

  • @mojoemurphy

I will mention, if you mic guitar amps, drums, etc, you're probably not going to have the same mix in your ears every night. At least with the variation in my band, gain stage is usually different enough every night to run monitors from zero each night. I would argue IEMs and floor wedges don't give you near the bass response you get from an amp, although with floor wedges, the subs in the mains can help

Good video. What do you use for tone when amp-less? I'd be interested to learn more about your pedal set up. Cheers 👍

I play bass in a Tom Petty tribute band, and at my age (66) I'd love to go ampless. It's tough enough to play gigs without having to schlep around amps, especially at load-out where you're already tired from a long gig. Unfortunately we're a band of older guys - our singer is the youngest at 50 - and they're a little too old school for this. Right now we're on hiatus (thanks, covid!), but when we get back to gigging I'd like to give this a try. The question is, what would I need to get in order to do this?

    • @ampthebassplayer

I don't have specific recommendations on gear as this was my first experience with this. However, I do know that there packs that will get you several receivers and a single transmitter so you could outfit your whole band in one go. www.proacousticsusa.com/live-sound-equipment/monitors/in-ear-monitors/galaxy-audio-as-950-4-wireless-in-ear-monitor-system.html
There's more to it than that, but that's a bit beyond what I know about. For example, the ability to give each band member their own mix via the phone is a function of the mixing board, so that's a whole other piece of gear I have no experience with. If there are sound engineers here who can offer more information, please do!

Maybe you could go with a tiny amp that's mic'd up and goes to the house sound? Tom Petty tribute band. Sounds fun!!!

Hey friend I really dig this video. Would you recommend going ampless in a two piece? It's just myself and a drummer. So I think it might work. I'd love to learn what you think and more about it though.

On craigslist recently I saw someone selling a battery operated vest that you wear under your clothes that rumbles your body. I've also seen small (3' x 3' maybe?) platforms you stand on that rumbles your feet. Both are targeted for exactly your issue -- it gives you some haptic feedback about drums or your bass or whatever audio source you feed into it.
I'm just a hobby bassist and don't know shit so I don't know if those things actually work.

I've seen similar kinds of things for drummers to attach to their throne. I think they call it a butt kicker. They're fun, but I don't think they're worth the cost.
