Correct you don't need more speed if you can improve the attack angle and dial in the loft. More speed can provide potential distance but that's another topic!
i really want to now pay more attention to these numbers. but out all of this would you say that the key would be getting a launch angle of as close to 15° as possible for optimum distance. find your attack angle and adjust your loft to try and hit that window? now how does club speed affect these number also?
How far are you willing to travel? From April-October I will now permanently be at the U of M Golf Course (Les Bolstad) Nov-March I am 20 mins south of downtown. Would love to help you but if you want someone close let me know where you are at and I can recommend
Hi Thomas, Appreciate your videos, but as many state in the comments and as seen in many other instruction videos elsewhere (the usual keys are important), but they’re the same old set up, move to the ball forward, tee it higher and tilt shoulder to improve AOA which does not work for most with other swing issues. I’d love to see a video in which keys that are hurting this are mentioned. Those steps above do not alone fix AOA, especially if the head is not staying behind, spine tilt not maintained or if driver is going back steep with cupped wrists or clubhead is not getting down and behind (shallowed) early enough. Good shoulder turn also promotes club going back more inside and thus flatter. Would love to see you do a video on this as I think it’s a huge void out there. Thank you!
Even in 2024 im still not used to using adjustable lofts. I understand that when changing lofts just like you said, face angle changes as well. So when i tried it w my std 9° driver, the club head sits awkwardly now at address like the back head is already falling and wanting to sit at the floor and the face is now way open also while at address. So my question is, should i hit the way it's addressed now (back head sitting more and face way open)? Or should i adjust my grip like twist back in order to force the driver head to come back to square at adress before i proceed w my swing? Thanks in advance thomas
The ideal way is to get fit for the correct loft first (driver head at 9 or 10.5*) then make any adjustments after that. But if you are finding more success just struggling with face angle do try some minor grip adjustments.
800 feet. That's the elevation where I live with the barometer settings. High launch low spin with a positive attack angle can do it but just know the GC Quad is known to give a little boost in numbers with low spin rates with a high launch, but if needed there are some bunkers in my tournaments that are at 300 that if I can cover on a real solid strike.
The real answer is what can get you in the optimal trajectory to maximize carry and total distance for your swing speed. Anything positive with AOA is good the higher the AOA the lower you can go with loft
I read somewhere that 11 Deg of loft is good for people like you and me, we also need higher spin upper 3000s may be in order to keep the ball in the air longer.
There has to be a mathematical formula somewhere that relates driver loft, swing speed, spin rate, angle of attack, and distance. Anyone aware of such a formula? Thanks
There is a great chart for this that Ping released a couple years ago. Google: ping proving grounds attack angle chart. It's the first image titled Ping Optimal launch and spin.
it's amazing how much difference you make in club head speed. I just wonder how much difference there would be if you used the Same club head speed on all of your swings.
Thanks for the feedback. It's near impossible to be a robot, Robot testing is the only way to keep that completely perfect. However I will say it is much easier to swing with more speed (potential distance) with a positive AOA. The intent was to keep the club speed the same.
I really wish that Callaway would publish the actual changes to the club head based on changing the hosel settings. "S". "N" and "D" doesn't provide enough information. I played a TM driver and I would buy a higher loft so that I could set the loft down and get a more open club face.
L O L It’s so simple to understand with a quick google search. But I’ll spell it out. S is “stated” loft. Meaning if it is a 9° head then S is at 9°. The numbers with minus or plus signs change up or down that loft number. Also if the higher up in loft you go the more the face angle shuts and the lower you go the more the face angle opens. N is for neutral lie angle. D is for draw lie angle (toe more upward to encourage a more left flying ball.
@@SaltyDogPerformance Duh? I know what the letters & numbers mean. What I want to see is the actual, measured effects of the changes. For example, what are the changes to the lie angle with each hosel setting? What about the face angle?
God, I love those youtubers. He hit a 2021 tour edge c 7 21 3 40 and now he brings out a Calloway. And can't hit it to eat 20. Think you should try to see 721 Torch first. I paid one fifty for mine
A good club fitter will always recommend more loft for golfers that hit down on the ball. Loft helps get that launch angle up a couple degrees without modifying the attack angle but that would still only be 7-8 degrees. Combining the two to find the optimal flight is the best option if a golfer can make the attack angle changes.
Every mph of club speed is 2-3 yards. Yes the faster swings the ball will go farther if hit the same but improving loft or AOA will gain the rest. Going from 111-115 isn't the main reason the ball goes 20+ yards farther.
why doesn't any one EVER tell us the lie angle of the driver? i play an old lee trevino driver at 10 deg. with a 55 deg lie angle and it stays in the fairway at 220.
The more loft a club has the more the lie angle will influence starting direction. Since a driver has the least amount of loft (minus putter) it doesn't affect it as much. Not saying it doesn't do anything but an incorrect lie angle will affect a wedge more than a driver. This could be why we don't really talk about lie angles as much with driver.
You're right about the ball speed! My Miss if slightly off the toe right now which is why it's only mid 160s but it's nice to know I can still get another 5mph ball speed with center strikes based on 114 mph club times that by 1.50 it could be around 170. That's even more distance.
I know this point, but getting my attack angle up is proving to be very difficult, I know if I can get the angle up, I will gain 20-40 yards, but cannot get this to work consistently
I'm the same.... my attack angle is consistently negative and I find it very difficult to get it even close to 0 degrees (just as Thomas struggled to go in the other direction). I would love to see some tips on getting that AoA positive for those who struggle with negative AoAs.
I will post future videos on how to increase attack angle. But first I would try two things. 1) Move ball position forward and 2) angle left shoulder higher than the right at setup and try recreate that position at impact.

How about shaft options? That can greatly affect launch angle too. Maybe you can test more with a flexible tip and a stiffer tip in varying degrees of the driver head? I need to come down and see you. My gamer driver is a Ping G20. Yes I know its old but I know where it releases and its so predictable. I bought a Cobra LTDX when they 1st came out and it is not working very well.
You're right! The results from different golf shafts are definitely player dependent. I would rank loft changes to be more reliable for most but the golf shaft can also really help.
@thomascampbellgolf I often notice the shaft spec isn't listed when the data is popped up on these sorts of analysis (on many youtube channels) it's a nice bit to add. Give people an idea of what it takes to get that head in a more predictable but efficient whip.
I actually had the driver set at 10 degrees when hitting down on the ball 2 degrees to have the ball launch as low as it did. More loft absolutely would help a player with a negative AOA however it would only get the launch to maybe 6 or 7 degrees in this instance. To get double digits on the launch AOA must improve
I highly suggest getting someone to take a look at the launch and spin with your driver. Loft changes alone before working on the attack angle could make a huge difference. Third item I would look at is where you are hitting it off the face, grab some face spray and look, low or heel side could be costing you.
Maybe google this guy. He’s forgotten more about the golf swing than you’ll ever know. (and based on that horseshit swing you’ve got up on your channel, that’s not much). Sit this one out, chief.
The difference when you get this right is unbelievable. Such easy gains for all those people who just keep trying to swing harder.

Can you actually hit to high up
And what’s the optimal launch angle?
What altitude have you got this set at? There is no world in which 163mph ball speed is carrying 315 yards at sea level.

seems like most of the difference is your club head speed. 115. or more on the shots you want and 112 or 111 on the one's you don't

It seems like your ball speeds should be at least 10 mph higher for the performance you’re getting. That doesn’t seem plausible.

8 deg long, but trouble 😬
Distance v Dispersion deepens on the type of course you play, if fairways are a must every time lofting down could be trouble...
Awesome thx , Glory to God
Why did not hit the 11 deg with negative attack angle? Think u r basically talking about spin loft.
