How to Improve Efficiency (Smash Factor) With Your Driver | Impact Location
Efficiency or smash factor with driver is essential to driving the golf ball farther. To improve efficiency with your driver you have to hit the golf ball in the middle of the clubface, have an optimal attack angle, play the correct loft on your driver, have a club path that is not to over the top and a face angle that is not too open to your club path and even a driver with the correct center of gravity placements. In this video I test with the Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond Driver set at 9 degrees of loft.
This is the beginning of a series on how to improve efficiency with your driver and this video focuses entirely on impact location and how it effects gear effect, spin rate, curve, distance and accuracy. Additionally I provide methods to improve impact location and explain the differences between a toe strike, heel strike and center strike. If you are going to miss the center of the clubface your best miss is slightly high toe.

How Far Do You Hit Your 7-Iron? | Club Speed and Dynamic Loft Comparison
Переглядів 47 тис.19 годин тому
How far should you be able to hit a 7 iron at certain clubhead speeds? Every 1 mile per hour of club speed increases can equate to 2-3 Yards. That's up to 30 yards if you increase your club speed by 10 mph. Do you hit your 7-iron the optimal distance? Can you stop the ball on the green with the optimal landing angle? Is the ball flight high or low? Does the ball spin back or have topspin? If yo...

How to Increase Distance with Your Irons | Compress Your Irons & Lower Dynamic Loft
Переглядів 3,5 тис.28 днів тому
The easy way to hit your irons longer is by compressing your irons to pick up distance. Dynamic loft is the secret weapon to compressing your irons. By compressing the ball you will lower your dynamic loft. Compressing the golf ball with your irons is one of the keys to making solid contact, gaining distance, and to control trajectory. Less loft and a lower spin loft presented at impact will eq...

My 7 iron goes 150 yds and sucks back about one yard.
Man. Wish I could just send you a video of my driver swing with the stats and let me know what I could be doing better. I have a solid swing but think I’m not optimizing everything properly. Amazing video! Ty for the knowledge.
Thanks for watching. I'm actually working on online lessons and video submissions as it's something that has some interest. Stay tuned for that in the new year.
Fantastic video!!! Makes complete and total sense thank you! Was wondering why you disappeared from 2nd schwing 😊
Hes got his own place now. Really nice set up
2nd Swing was only club fitting and it's only part of the process. I was getting more into teaching and really enjoying it which is why I made the move.
Great video thanks ❤
Thanks for watching!
Great video Very helpful Look forward to the rest of the series
Thanks for watching. We have about 4-5 more items to go through (Loft, Path, GC placement, Face Angle)
That's me! 0:26 And a series?! Thank you! This is probably the biggest inconsistency in my game. And I do usually strike in the heal
That's crazy that you were one of the first to see the video too! Heel strikes are no good but there is a good chance there is more of a cause to it rather than just standing farther away. Keep watching and thanks for the idea
@thomascampbellgolf I'm thinking so too. I actually tend to miss left as a right hander. It's been a little while but last time I was on a trackman I have an in to out path, and I feel like I maybe stand too far from the ball. Which could maybe lead to me being on my toes. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
@@icetrey2468 Keep working at it and let me know how its going
Im swinging around 104 mph at 4 degrees up swing with s 9 degree driver and still only hit around 240 big ol let down lol
The good news is you are hitting up on it 4 degrees with a 9 degree driver that should result in longer than. 240 carry. The spin has to be super high. You are either hitting it too low (tee it higher) or on the heel (work on toe strikes) if that's not the answer it's probably ball curing right but fix impact location first.
I have the same problem. I however have around 2 * Out to in swingpath and thats prbably why i have about 3000 spinn on a good hit. If i heel it its about 4500. However sometimes i get it to 275 yards with 3000 spinn. Maybe better to get down to 100 inswingspeed and try tonlower the spinn. Ive got Ts 2 on 8,5* and Hzardus smoke lowspinn shaft
Amazing how accurately you were able to hit your clubhead speeds and change your dynamic loft.
Thought you left the country, nice to see you back. I’ve always enjoyed your technical teaching. I use the Calloway Paradyms, got fitted a yr ago finally found something I can really hit well. They go a country mile.
All of this seems conceptually very straightforward. However, it's still super advanced for me in practice because I can't seem to hit the damn ball square more than 20% of the time!
PLEASE, PLEASE make your next video on how to use the RypStick. If this product is as good as advertised (along with your backing), then your next video on this will probably do more for any of your viewers than any other tip you can provide. After all, everyone has a different swing, but everyone will benefit from the RypStick.
I remember seeing you on the 2nd swing club test videos. Your club control is impressive at different speeds. Your feel on the course must be through the roof. Are you a proponent of keeping your weight off the back foot with driver? Also, what do you think is your easiest source of power; arms, legs, turn, or swinging up etc? Thanks
i really want to now pay more attention to these numbers. but out all of this would you say that the key would be getting a launch angle of as close to 15° as possible for optimum distance. find your attack angle and adjust your loft to try and hit that window? now how does club speed affect these number also?
I saw this scrolling by, and had to stop and comment (I'll watch this too!) because I hit my regular 7-iron a little over 170, lol. But that's a club I like to use for 145 also (most cases) because my 3/4 w/weight slightly forward makes for a great 145 shot. I'll shut up and watch now, haha.
I think golfers should worry less about distance and concentrate on accuracy. Distance went out with the dishwater when they stayed making 7 irons into 6 1/2 irons or more. Swing smooth and quit trying to hit the same clubs as the pros. Then we wouldn't have so many 5+hr rounds.
Depends on the loft. 7 irons today are lofted at around 32°, give or take. I have a set of Wilson Staffs from the 70's and the 7 iron is 40°. There was no need for all these gap wedges because the pitching wedges were at 52°. Standard lofts back in the day… 1-17° 2-20° 3-24° 4-28° 5-32° 6-36° 7-40° 8-44° 9-48° PW-52° SW-56° No need for gap wedges
Thomas: I hope you can comment on this. When you decreased dynamic loft, you increased club speed by 2.4 which is about 6 yds of distance. Then the ball data showed an increase of 6yds. To me, it looks like the dynamic loft did not have any increase in distance. UNLESS the DECREASE in dynamic loft CAUSES an INCREASE in the club head speed which in turn increases distance. Please explain where my logic is incorrect. BUT it is a very good and informative video and I really enjoy the different speeds you use in your videos. I used to swing around 85 in my 40s, then 80 around 60 yrs old and now at 68 yrs of age, I'm down to 73 mph, Cheers Daryl
Isn't under 6k spin pretty low for a 7i? seems like 25 ft is alot of rollout for a 7i?
The landing angle is more important. As the lofts have got stronger in irons the spin rates have dropped. It's hard to get the typical club x 1000 rpm these days and if a golfers club speed is slower then the ball also won't spin as much. As long as the landing angle makes up for spin it's ok, but we also have to consider green softness etc, some of those balls were landing in front of the green and they will roll out farther.
Trad loft (34 deg), 175 yards long, 136 feet high...62 years old
What loft is on your 7 iron my 919s are 32`
34 degrees. Callaway Apex TCB
I fail to see the point and value of the video (stop after 5 mins). You can just Google and get very much the same info which is roughly the distance vs club head speed for each club.
The goal was to show it in real life. We all know that typically every mph of club speed increase is 2-3 yards however if you watch the portion about dynamic loft you will realize that golf swing efficiency can be way more important than just swinging harder. Thanks for watching hopefully I can get you to watch for more than 5 minutes in the next video.
Hello Thomas. When i play the ball further forwards my path goes to much from out to in and i wondered how do i combat that? Thanks
I hit my 7 iron like 120-130 with 75-80ish club speed barely even swinging because I have zero confidence. 28.5 dynamic loft, hitting 2-3 degrees UP on the ball. I try every drill under the sun to hit down on it and just can't figure it out.
I know we typically like the ball position around the center to 1.5 inches forward with 7-iron but if you are still hitting up on in 2-3 degrees try moving the ball position further back than normal
Get a lesson from a PGA pro. This will be cheaper than buying a "divot board" but one of those will probably help you too.
Great video. I have a tendency to flip at the ball, especially with wedges. Do you have any tips to go from flipping to compressing through shaft lean?
I appreciate you pointing out the loft issue, and saying what club you have.
Do people actually have such a slow swing speed, or is this some kind of meme? Anyway, unbelievable.
Yes when club fitting golfers into golf shafts a good baseline to start is lite flex 65-70 mph, reg flex 70-80, stiff flex 80-90 and x-flex 90+ for club head speed with a 7-iron. There is crossover but it's a good starting point.
Can you a video about shaft flex vs club head speed please
fwiw, the *last* thing im "trying to do" is help the ball up when i flip. Its a unconscious reaction to th clubb being out of postion. whats terrible about it is that is cuases just the variance you show in this video. If i amke a decent move and apply the 24ish degrees of dynamic loft on my 34* 7i, Ill get low/mid 180s carry. if i flip, itll go straight, absurdly high and as little as 160 yds or so. I plan for about 174.
For P790 its the 8 iron 35 deg similar to his 7 iron 34 deg
All good and well but how do I get my dynamic loft lower
Thomas, I have to agree with so many other comments. A great video and very enlightening. I hit my 7 iron (Zx5 Mk II @ 32 deg) avg carry 143; ball speed 109; launch 19 deg; height 85 ft; land angle 48 deg. From reviewing your video, I think I am some gains to be had. Really hope your channel does well. J
It will be wonderful to know which make you are using and what's the loft on the 7 iron ?
Callaway Apex TCB - 34* of Loft
What altitude have you got this set at? There is no world in which 163mph ball speed is carrying 315 yards at sea level.
800 feet. That's the elevation where I live with the barometer settings. High launch low spin with a positive attack angle can do it but just know the GC Quad is known to give a little boost in numbers with low spin rates with a high launch, but if needed there are some bunkers in my tournaments that are at 300 that if I can cover on a real solid strike.
What loft 7-iron did you use? I used to see you on Second Swing golf and wondered where you had gone. Good to find you again (subscribed).
My actual 7-iron for all shots. 34* Callaway Apex TCB. Glad you found me again!
I hit my 7 iron 194yds.............that usually takes me two attempts to achieve though.
Many thanks. A very useful and informative video. My 7 iron has 30.5 degree loft so, in effect you were achieving these distances with an 8 iron. I'd love to see a similar video with a 5 or 7 wood.
Great to see you have your own channel. I currently game a Sub 70 659MB 32° 7 iron. “ muscle back” Aerotech 125 S shaft. Carry avg 185 yards. I know this for a fact as my home course has a 185yrd par 3 that is over a pond. If you don’t carry it a minimum of 175yrds it will be wet. A big splash don’t lie. lol
Naturally you delofted at the higher swing speeds by a bit over 2*. So, what it that around 5yds. Also, my swing speed with a 7 iron is around 83 mph based on those results, which is right on. Good to have all the variations with dynamic loft and presentation.
Wondering if, say, a 70mph slowed down shot by someone like Thomas & club like Thomas’s is ultimately photocopy-identical to someone slower max speed and “whippy-er” shaft or “hot face” head if you put them through simulator. Do they compress the ball a bit differently, and/or efficiency differs. Just wondering.
Usually 117-122 ball speed 170ish carry
Subscribed...based on this video I think you know the missing pieces of the current content. There are tons of club reviews, but they never show it at the 3 different speed players....as you just did. Not sure how you can do it, but you can maybe also address the different types of players with your content and club reviews.... the slicers, neutral, and drawers. The reality is most people watching are probably slicey flippers who usually fit into the draw biased strong lofted clubs. I think if you find someone, average joe, and use him for club reviews it would help the masses get a better understanding of how their swing would be affected.
It's very impressive to be able to hit at 3 different speeds back-to-back and be able to keep delivery and strike pretty consistent. Kudos, Thomas. I enjoyed the video.
Yeah, I thought a robot was going to hit each speed, would take out any human differences but seemed close enough
Very informative video Thomas but in your opinion can a golfer actually hit his irons too far, one of my friends only started playing golf in the spring but he swings his 6 iron over 100 mph and carries it 205-210 yards and even though he is only a mid handicapper he is a big strong athlete who generates loads of speed and power, he currently plays stronger lofted players distance iron which does account for some of his carry distance but over 100 mph with a 6 iron is still elite tour level speed, so would you recommend that he should consider changing to a traditional lofted cavity back iron instead.
Impressive talent... great info and really helps me visualize my swing and how I approach shots and distances that are 'in between clubs' so to speak. I'm 58, 5'4", a 4-5hc and hit my 7 iron 155-160 carry with a low flight as you can imagine... so results are 163-168 yds total for the most part. So I gather my swing speed hovers around 80mph normally and I'll limit my distance to 170yds max with my 7I and switch to an 6I if the flag sits at 175-180yds.
I am at 105 yards if I don’t hit behind the ball.
I notice you roll your wrists open to initiate your backswing. I also notice as you increase club speed you lose accuracy, do you suppose there is a correlation between the wrist activity and the inaccuracy as speed increases?
I notice you roll your wrists open to initiate your backswing. I also notice as you increase club speed you lose accuracy, do you suppose there is a correlation between the wrist activity and the inaccuracy as speed increases?
You can’t call an iron a number without adding the degree to that number as all irons have become delofted the recent years. There’s only one club that’s worth adding distance to, and that’s the driver. The rest of the clubs you want to know the exact average distance range longest/shortest with each club.
Agree 100%. The driver matters because you don’t have a longer option to go to. The rest are about accuracy.
If you don't start with a bace line stratic loft then everything after said test is completely irrelevant
