If you're going to cover somebody else's song, you'd better make it great. His version of "Every time you go away," was powerful and arguably better than the original. This should have never left the studio.

No, great singers sing. Adlib-ing is sometimes self indulgent and loses the actual tune in favour of histrionics. If he performed the song exactly like the original, a devoted fan would not care because a great singer has a unique voice and that would be enough.

If I want to hear something that sounds exactly like the original version then I’ll go and listen to the original version. Great singers ad their own flair to a song. That’s what makes them interesting apart from the particular timbre of their vocal cords.
