    When an F3 locum salary in the UK is the same as an F2 base salary in Australia 🥲

    Thanks for explaining. I just wanted to ask a few questions if thats ok! You stated that hourly locum rates went up to £85 an hour at times of particular need. As a doctor, would you not have accepted this shift at the normal rate or at least some degree less than the £85? Would this shift have been any harder or was it simply that they were struggling to get someone to fill the position at this time of year?

      It’s happened a few times over the Christmas holidays but what happened was I had already agreed to do the shifts for £40 per hour. Then the trust made a blanket decision to increase the SHO rate from £40 per hour to £65 per hour for all internal locums within the trust. I think this was likely due to the number of unfilled SHO shifts available. They then increased it further to £75 per hour. But to go back to your original question I was happy to do the shifts for £40 per hour, the trust increased this to £75 per hour without negotiation. Hope this helps!

    Don't you lose continuity as a temp/locum? You mentioned psychiatry and with long term treatments, do you get patients assigned to you? Do you just fill gaps/sick/holidays?

      This depends on what shifts you do. For example I have worked as a locum SHO on the same ward in the same job role for 2 years now because the vacancy has never been filled. It is arguably the job role where I have had the most consistency. As a foundation doctor I would rotate speciality every 4 months. You can also cover short term vacancies that come up as a result of sickness.
      With regards to patients being assigned to you, all patients are under the care of a consultant, because of shift patterns/vacancies/annual leave etc, the junior doctors who see the patient on a daily basis will often change. For example a junior doctor could be covering the ward from Monday to Wednesday, then they could be off on a zero day on Thursday and then they could be doing night shifts from Friday to Sunday. This would mean that the patient would be seen by the same consultant during the week but they could be seen by 3 different junior doctors

    Do you get pension contributions from the employer when you locum? I’ve read somewhere that this is the case. What % of your pay do they contribute?
    I work as a pharmacy locum with private corporations (ie not the NHS) and the rate you get is just that. if I want to build a pension I have to fund it myself.

      I dont think so its basically like agency work your only temp staff

      I’ll be honest, I’m not as clued up on the pensions as I’d like to be but I know that from the work I’m doing I’m contributing 11.6% each month and my employer is also contributing. I’m not sure if the reason they’re contributing is because I’m an internal locum and my employee number and payments continued on from when I was an FY2 within the trust. It’s something I definitely need to look into though!
      I know that when I when I’ve worked as an external locum in other trusts the employer did not contribute

    Can IMG doctors do, locum duties??

    • @colinkilday
      @colinkilday  Рік тому +1

      You can work as a locum as an IMG if you are currently on either a training contract or a trust grade contract, essentially you are able to pick up extra shifts. However, if you want to locum full time, it is visa dependent, so if you require a visa to work in the UK you can’t locum full time

      Not full time no. That would defeat the whole purpose of employing IMGs on national minimum hourly pay to reduce the NHS wage bill.

    In the 1980's in B.C. Canadian doctors, including myself, were payed according to the number of patients they saw and what help and care they provided . A unique form of pay according to how much work you did. Surprise? UK recommendation? Government pay for maintenance of the infrastructure, primarily hospital based, and pay , with agreed guidelines, for work done per negotiated item of service by doctors. Also increase the pay for nurses, who (BTW) are some of the greatest teachers of doctors. Get government out of the running of the NHS workplace and have it only fund!! according to reasonable oversight.

    Can img do locum jobs after fy2 ?

    • @colinkilday
      @colinkilday  Рік тому +2

      You can work as a locum as an IMG if you then go onto a speciality training programme or trust grade contract (and locum alongside side this as extra shifts). However, if you want to locum full time it's visa dependent, so if you require a visa to work in the UK you can't locum full time.

    • @colinkilday

      Because I was getting paid more as a locum and I hit the 40% tax margin, I paid a lot more PAYE tax
