    Please don't forget that a neat, well made garment starts with fabric that has been ironed, and a pattern that has been ironed. Press each seam as instructed. Nothing says 'beginner garment' like a fold line crease! These are great tips Claire. After 50+ years of sewing, I still mark notches and dots for accurate piecing.

      I cant say I usually iron my fabric (unless ridiculously creased) because my energy is very limited so save it for the sewing. BUT I do press as I sew the seams and you're right it makes a world of difference. I talked about this in my sewing myths video 🥰

    I love your words of encouragement ❤ the most. Just getting back into sewing and am doing some quilting. I used to make my children clothes and myself when I was feeling brave.

    Great tips. Especially the notebook. Last year I invested in a Canon Ivy Zink photo printer. Now I can take pictures of pattern version, & my finished garment. It’s so much fun to add to my notes. U-tube is such a wonderful tool for visual learners. We are sew better now!

    I have been sewing for years but always watch these kind of videos because there is always something to learn. My biggest fault is not accurately marking notches. Perhaps watching yet another video that mentioning the importance of notches may trigger something in my brain! Thanks for doing these videos.

    Yes, charity shops are the perfect place to get fabric for mock ups. I found 3 meters of cotton tablecloth for €2.50 and 3 meters of linnen tablecloth for €0,50!! I don't know who priced these items but I love them 😂

    Agreed on keeping notes. I made a mask earlier this week using some leftover fabric from a project and even though mere months ago I was making masks like crazy I had to refer back to my notes to remember things like what elastic length I preferred and so on. I even keep notes on what presser foot I used and things like needle position and stitch length. Saves so much energy whenever I try to repeat what I did before.

    I restarted my sewing in lockdown. I have learned that making notes on my patterns/drafts reminds me to consider or make the same alterations in future. It can sometimes be weeks between tune-ups and it reinforces memory and makes for consistency.

    These are all great tips! One thing I do with my sewing notebook is I have a list of all my body measurements in the front so I don't have to keep re-measuring myself.

    I'm recently getting back into sewing and this was a great watch, so thank you for that.
    Regarding the last point, I would write notes about the patterns and put the pages in the pattern packet. Actually I'd put it in an A4 envelope with the pattern etc as it was less flimsy. Sometimes I would stick the cover picture to the front of the envelope and write on the back when I made it, what version etc and even include a little fabric swatch.
    One of these days I'll get back to being that organised!

    Great tips, my first attempt at sew a pattern didn't work out the only finished measurement was the length, I did think to measure the pattern , and I never finished the garment.

    Thanks for this very informative video. I used to sew a lot of my clothes and elaborate costumes for Halloween but it's been many years. I've got everything I need to start again. I just need a boost and this video reminds me of why I liked it in the first place. Great tips!

    Very insightful video. I fully understand (and agree) with what you were saying about ensuring that the garments you make "fit into your lifestyle" but I also don't ever want to hear myself say that "I don't know how to make something" simply because it doesn't fit into my lifestyle.

    • @Penguinandpear
      @Penguinandpear  3 роки тому

      That is true and I would encourage sewing out of your comfort zone. However in this case my aim was to help beginners get the courage and confidence to start sewing. So I think sewing for their own lifestyle will give confidence to keep making.

    I would add when cutting out stretch fabrics to be sure the ends do not hang off the cutting table. Allowing the fabric to hang will stretch and distort the fabric. Roll it up and keep the fabric on the table. Great tips for all level of sewers. Especially #8, yes stay stitch curves. I did not do this on the waist line of a double circle skirt and the waist ended up over 4 inches too large. No way to fix it, with out starting over. It is still in my junk pile 4 yrs. later.
