  • Haider is a 2014 Indian Crime Drama Film set in Kashmir and is the third installment of Director Vishal Bhardwaj's Shakespeare Trilogy. Haider is his adaptation of William Shakespeare's Tragedy, Hamlet. It stars Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Irrfan Khan, and Shraddha Kapoor. Also, even though it came out in 2014, I didn't actually watch it for the first time until last year (2021). Can you believe that? This is basically my perfect movie, and I wanted to make a video that would allow me to convince you to watch it (if you haven't already) without necessarily giving away the details of the plot. Let me know what you think!

    Gimme excited to see the movie! I did read death of a salesman in high school and wouldn’t recommend it. In my school it was very hit or miss. I felt like the tragedy gets lost because I didn’t care about any of the men or what happened to them (there are only like two women and they’re not like characters really). It also counts on some sort of belief in the American dream. My favorite Shakespeare adaptations are the like 90s/2000s modern ones that weren’t good but were fun like 10 things I hate about you and the like.

      ok good it looked kinda boring anyways 😌 also yeah i was hoping someone would say those cheesy 90s modern retellings hehe 💞

      Why is counting on a belief in the American dream such a prevalent undertone in high school books? Even I the UK it was Of Mice and Men... I didn't read The Great Gatsby but I have a feeling the shoe fits there too :P

    • @kcoca6619

      @@aaronpoole5531 yeah I think gatsby hits it too. I have no idea how it got popular for sure. I think some of it is that it’s an easy theme to recognize in the same way a lot of high school books will have a religious/christian theme because it’s assumed that will be easier to teach. Unfortunately both from my time as a student and a teacher the American dream tends to be a huge turn off for modern readers who don’t need a book to tell them the American dream is fake. Personally it’s not a theme I tend to cover if I can avoid it.

    Vishal Bhardwaj is one of my favourite Indian directors working today, and the fact that he's also a screenwriter, singer and composer (he composed all the songs and the score for Haider too) is crazy to me like how can one person be so talented? He even composed one of my favourite Bollywood songs ever (Raat Ke Dhai Baje from Kaminey). He was the screenwriter for Talvar which is another great film I highly rec if you haven't seen it yet, it's on Netflix. I can't wait for his new project. Haider is definitely in my top 5 for Bollywood and maybe even just films in general.
    Also Tabu is such a MILF. What did you think about to way they used Salman Khan movies in the film?

    Bharadwaj's entire trilogy of Shakespeare with Indian tadka is actually pretty good. He takes core element of Shakespearean plays and transform into indian setting without compromising the integrity of the story

    I will definitely need to check out this movie! Tragedy has a lot of connections with one of my favourite academic nerd topics, which is free will vs. determinism (medieval studies changes you as a person). In a lot of ancient tragedies, it's the attempt to avert a prophecy that causes the prophecy to actually come true. So in the case of Oedipus' parents, they try to prevent the prophecy from coming true by casting him aside. But...if they'd just raised him, upon him learning about the prophecy, it would have been THEM that he ran away from. (See also: Perseus' grandfather, Hecuba dreaming that she's giving birth to a flaming torch when she has Paris) Or with Macbeth, he wouldn't have even thought about killing the king if he hadn't been told that he would. So for me, whenever I hear 'tragedy', I think of a story that revolves around characters who are given a fate that, whether they try to avoid it or try to attain it, will inevitably result in their downfall. They don't actually have any kind of free will.

    • @cherrybepsi
      @cherrybepsi  2 роки тому +2

      Yesss I love this! It goes back to that connection between plot vs characters right? Like most of us are used to character-driven plots, but tragedies are basically characters driven by the plots. I like the discussion of free will vs determinism though because I think it adds a depth to the topic that I didn't really touch on in this video, so thank you for bringing that up! I'll have to think more about that 💞

    hell yes. started following u on tumblr before i even knew u had a youtbe channel. this sort of content that uses Indian media as a jumping off point for comparisons and critiques of western media is both interesting AND necessary on this platform. too many white people... men usually lol... on this platform that seem to know nothing abt actual film production or theory who end up making videos that ultimately end up being like.... "this movie has bad writing" and dont justify that with any meaningful evidence. but that doestn have much to do w this vid... i just love this channel and think we need more channels run by non white people living in western nations. im toying w the idea of starting my own channel, might as well put this tv production degree to work since im having a hard time finding a job in the industry atm!!!

    Okay commenting again for a little bit of engagements bc holy shit this was such a good video essay. I started the film today and im about a third of the way through and im so digging it. The opening scene was really fantastic! Loved the camera work. The actors of the main character and the mother really play their roles so well and perfectly portray that weird energy of it all. I had to stop watching it bc i have to study for midterms but i can tell this film is going to stick with me.

    really fascinated by the difference between these two tragedies in that oedipus' fall lies in his impulsive rage and action in killing his father (which yk sets off the rest of the tragedy) and hamlets lies in his anomie, his restlessness and unwillingness to take any sort of move forward.... they are so me which is probably a risky thing to say but #girl. loved the video!! I haven't seen haider yet but i know its good 😌 tabu supremacy

    • @cherrybepsi
      @cherrybepsi  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I think the fact that both their "flaws" are so starkly different really highlights the inevitability of the tragedy. Like, Oedipus took decisive action, and still failed to escape his fate. Hamlet didn't take any decisive ction, and also failed to escape his fate. There's no way out and the characters were doomed from the start 💆🏽‍♀️

    this was suuuuuuch a good video omigoddd!!!! Haider has been on my big list of hamlet adaptions/reinterpretations to watch for a while now, and i couldn't be more excited to watch it after this honestly. i'm also really really happy you talked about the actual Oedipus myth and compared it to Freud's uh... generous... read on the situation. I feel like so many people just take his word for granted and honestly it does a real disservice to the story!!
    my favorite shakespeare adaption is uhhhhhhh a really fuckin hard pick. i haven't seen the fancy new Joel Coen Macbeth which is probably gonna steal the no.1 spot but For Now, Until I See It my favorite is-- ohhh god wait are we just talking about movies or can it also be stage productions??? or also i own a video game where ophelia is a time traveler, so Does That Count. we could be here all day... i'm forcing myself to stick to movies and picking Justin Kurzel's 2015 Macbeth because it's gorgeous and clever and also somehow they made having FOUR witches work, if you can believe that.
    p.s.-- between 15:17 and 15:24 the subtitles stop briefly, i believe you said "And as a loving son, it's his duty to his father to get revenge for him."

      Ooh I haven't really watched a lot of stage productions but if you have a rec of one to watch I wouldn't mind checking it out! What's the Ophelia video game about? Just out of curiosity 👀
      Also TY for catching that w the subtitles, I'll go and fix those as soon as I'm near a computer 😩

    I read Death of a Salesman in high school and while it was depressing to me at the time I did think it was an interesting play. Also would recommend watching an adaptation vs reading the play. It’s interesting the point abt catharsis though bc I feel like if you’re going thru lots of difficult emotions the tragedy hits so good and the reason a lot of people don’t like them is that if they’re in a good place at the moment it reminds them of all this upsetting stuff about humanity that they’d rather not think about.

    • @Maya-uj6fm

      that's a good point actually, about how people prefer not to watch tragedies if they're already relatively content with their lives 🤔 i feel like i've definitely done that before where i'm like "oh this is gonna be a bummer, i'll just skip it"
      also ty for the headsup about death of a salesman that sounds more up my alley anyway than reading a play lmaooo
