Four Years with Brian's Veloster N

  • It has been about four years since I began daily driving a Hyundai Veloster N. 2019 model year, no performance package, manual transmission, of course. No DCT was available at the time, but I am glad. This is an easy manual to work with, and the rest of the driving experience is have-it-your-way: go-kart when you want it, sensible and practical economy car when you need it. Here are my findings on life with the Veloster N - the good and the bad.

I'm so glad the interior is cheap and spartan. I'm tired of cars escalating in price, particularly lower end cars like hot hatches. Hot hatches are supposed to offer next level performance on a budget, nothing else.

I love everything about my 2020 veloster n. The best part about the car is its lack of amenities. I have a great car that I bought for a great price because it doesn't have adaptive cruise, lane departure, or any other safety suite. I like to drive, and this car lets me do that. I wish more car companies would make affordable drivers cars, but there just aren't that many out there.

Honestly, everything keeping the Veloster N from being a 10/10 car are the same things that make it the best performing car for the price which almost makes it 10/10 in a roundabout way.

I have put 162,715 on my 2020 Veloster N PP. i truly live this vehicle! Great video Brian! I have a 2020 VN PP in white. One of the first things I upgraded were the tires. The P zeros it came with were scary in the wet. I live in southwest Florida and it rains a lot here. I now have Michelin PS 4S’s. I always have done my own oil changes and transmission fluid changes. At 56k I have needed to replace my brakes one time and my battery one time as well. I’ve modified my car to where is completely bolt on ( Intake, IC, HFDP, resonator delete mid pipe, BOV, OCC, bigger turbo inlet, and my JB4. So far so good. I love the extra power I’m making but of course I want more. Lol. As far as cosmetics, I’ve upgraded the rear spoiler to the Adro carbon fiber V2 wing. I love it. Well worth the price. I also have N mud flaps and I’ve upgraded my front and rear turning signals to full LED and my high beams to LED as well. I love my N and I enjoy riding it for short and long trips. I do have to agree that the interior is lack luster but for the price, I can’t complain. Anyways, thanks for video!

2020 VN with PP and I've had every issue you've had. Clamped brakes, battery replaced and difficulty finding the rear wiper. Tires are expensive as well and don't last as long and I've had the 19"s paint peeling off.

You might be able to order a high pressure spare for it from a Hyundai dealer, my N has one with the tire located under the panel that has the standard tire inflator and foam tray installed beneath it, you just remove the foam tray, put the spare in there, and cover it with the floor panel. The cost and time to wait for delivery is the only thing about getting a spare, it can take awhile because I think it gets shipped over from Korea…

Alex, great video! I watched your VN reviews a few years ago. I also have a black 2020 VN manual, no performance package, and I run Michellin Pilot all-weather in winter, and Pilots Super Sports in the summer. After almost 50k, I haven't had to replace the brakes, but they stick on moist days and that's annoying. As a daily drive, the car has been great. And it's always fun to drive it on the twisty roads near home. Sorry to say the clutch went bad recently. It looks like Hyunda will replace it under warranty. IMO, the looks of the car have aged well. So many cars looks generic in comparison. Yeah, the interior is modest, but no big deal. Love the steering wheel, and, as you say, the seat feels great. P.S. Yeah, I miss a sunroof. FWIW, I've heard that it's hard to do that at this price point and keep the car rigidity high.

Had mine with a DCT since April of 21 and just crossed 36k. Haven't had any issues since I purchased the car outside of blowing some tires on pot holes in Chicago but changing over to 18s helped mitigate that as well as a set of winter tires for when snow comes around. I'd really say the only two downsides of the car are how stiff the ride is and how poor rearward visibility is. Fortunately due to plenty of coverage when the car came out, I knew what I was walking into and I'm happy to say all the positives (great to drive, fun noises, cool/quirky looks, and a surprising amount of space) far outweigh any negatives. It's amazing just how much the car changes by flipping it into N mode.

    2 years with my N:
Bought a "track car"; wouldnt expect a luxury interior. Interior is not bad at all. Yes it has plastic but it's sub 35k new.
Parking Brake: Yes if the car sits it will lock up a bit. Roll back in reverse to break them free.
The doors always throw people off lol
Bought this car as my First and Last New Car and it has been great! First import car as well.
Maintenance is cheap. Idk what people are talking about. Yes, if you go to the dealer outside of your maintenance cycle it will be more expensive.
Have about 12K miles on my 22 VN 6MT
If you swap your wheels or tires BSD no longer functions correctly fyi
Car flies under the radar unless you get the Blue one
Love closing the exhaust while passing cops.
Cops and insurance companies have no idea what it is either. Like they will question the model (at least they did for me when I got mine)
Car enthusiasts ignore the car when in the wild. Random soccer moms and middle age women love asking me about it..... they say it's cute lol

I've been tracking my 2021 for three years now. I would consider upgrading to the Elantra N but what you CAN do in the Veloster that you CAN'T do in the Elantra is get four extra tires/wheels in the back. Four 235 tires fit perfectly when upright in the back. I stuff my jack and some chairs behind them so they can't roll back into the glass and I'm good to go.

I have a 2020 VN with the performance package. The wet brakes rust to the rear calipers. It is an "endearing" quality. The third door is one of the cooler features IMHO. I call this car my amusement park ride on wheels as I commute on curvy back roads. I do have some mods, but this car right off the lot is really well sorted. No issues with the car to date. It has been rock solid. I do have a second set of tires...18" Rial Lucca rims and Michelin Pilot Sport all seasons like you because I live in Pennsylvania. Those Pilots are nice tires!

I wanted white or blue, but I was getting desperate lol like having mad withdrawals driving an economical automatic vehicle. I own a 2022 VN w/ DCT.
Old school Honda guy. I bought the VN because of how it drove. No lie it reminded of driving 300hp turbo b18 back in the day. It was simple and raw in all the right ways. It was fun to drive, made the right noises, and handles like a go cart. Worst oart for me was the brand, my knowledge of Hyundai was limited and knew they had a rep.
I maintain it extremely well and its garage kept. Other than tires and some updates nothing really to report.
I like my seats over the fabric, both in look and comfort. (Just fits my frame well)
First, auto car I've owned, drove manual 20 some years. No regrets, I love the DCT! Its an engaging gearbox and runs flawlessly. Its no Porsche PDK, but I do prefer it over my friends DSG. And the customization is awesome, i can turn off creep mode and track shift. Disengages the clutch at stops, and lessens the clamping pressure when shifting making the car feel more stable. I only really use track shift for steaight line, which I don't do alot.

I'm 1.5 years into owning my 2021 Veloster N and it almost isn't the same car, at least all things you're knocking your model for have more or less been addressed in the 2021 (minus the hard plastic interior).
The racing seats the 2021 comes with a great but not comfortable on the days where you can't bring yourself to sit in the proper racing position. I've made it to 27k miles with 0 mechanical issues and have blown out 3 snow tires on NYC potholes (dealership recently advised that the car has so much torque naturally that I'm better off sticking with the stock all-seasons).
This car is the definition of "jack of all trades, master of none" but damn, everything it does it does very well and if you like performance cars you can't go wrong with it.
Comparing it to my BMW 335i (stock, i will not compare it to the car tuned) it is faster, way more maneuverable, more comfortable for passengers, more cargo space, sounds better inside and out and most importantly, ran 25K miles without a single warning light on the dash.
Did I mention the value on this car is barely dropping?

I got cheap steel rotors uncoated. So it'll happen. Now the caliper is a weird part but I believe they sorted out the cylinder boot. Have you changed out the brake pads?

22 VN 6 speed here. I have noticed that brake issue. My car is parked at work 5 days at a time and half the time I do have to get rolling in 1st for the brakes to release, but not a big deal.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the hpfp or the turbo going out. The fuel pump starves the engine at high rpms and is prone to failure. Needs to be replaced with the sonata fuel pump. Also the turbocharger itself doesn't handle tuning well at all, a friend of mine blew his at a track day. You have to replace it with the more durable Elantra N/Kona N turbo or the hybrid turbo from SXTH.
Aside from those issues the engine is built to make serious power and it's the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel

i’ve noticed the exact same brake behavior with my 2022 Veloster N. it’s the first connecticut winter in ownership and due to slim garage space, it’s been sitting outside for the past month. if it’s recently rained or snowed, it definitely latches and grips hard when moving into gear after sitting. super jarring the first few times it’s happened. now i normally drive it for a mile or so and brake hard to loosen and warm them back up. very annoying ritual that i need to do like twice a week but hey, once the brakes are loose they work great 🤷‍♂️

I shouldn’t have to replace tires on a brand new car.

@MDTT I know this might be hard for you to understand but try to keep up. The base Veloster has either a 1.6 Gamma engine or a 2.0 Theta II engine both naturally aspirated, these are the only two Veloster engines affected by the fire recall as stated in the CNET article.
The Veloster N has a high performance generation two Theta II-i turbo engine developed by the chief engineer of the BMW M Division, and has been tested and used on track for over seven years with no fires. Motortrend did a whole article on it entitled "Probing Hyundai's Veloster N Performance Powertrain", heres a quote regarding the Theta II-i engine:
"This descendant of the Theta II has little in common with its predecessors, other than the fact that it has an all-aluminum long-block, open deck, and 86x86mm bore and stroke dimensions."
If theres no more questions then school is dismissed.
