One of them isn’t just a feature. It’s a solo Drake song! On Camila’s album! Who does that? The album just stops for a Drake song. Even without the cultural context, it totally kills what vibe/momentum the album had, and it wasn’t that strong to begin with.

@eliasmsv3156 I think it's possible for a reviewer to adapt their reviews to the brand opinion (for lack of a better term) of the outlet that they're working for.
Similar to how a songwriter for an artist would adopt the artist's POV and vocabulary to write something fitting to the artist rather than to themselves.
Also, pitchfork selects who they hire, so they probably select for people with opinions that fit their brand.

I completely agree with your take on the music industry right now. People are putting more effort into brand deals, advertisements and movie roles than the actual music. Mainstream artists are basically using their music "career" to launch themselves into other avenues. They would care much much more about having a viral interview or silly tiktok trend than a good album or artistic growth
Yeah as a fan of Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga it kinda feels that way. The problem seems to be that music just is not a great way to make money, and that artists can make a lot more doing acting, brand deals, makeup lines, fragrances, guest appearances etc. Like imo Eternal Sunshine and especially Chromatica were both really good albums they clearly cared a lot about making, so I wouldn't say they don't care about music anymore, but it very much feels like there isn't much of an incentive for artists to be making pop music at the moment. I'm hopeful this is changing as there have been comparatively much more great pop releasing this year so far (eg. Beyonce, Ariana, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Charli xcx, Kesha) but I'm not sure exactly whether any of the economics have changed

@@silversoulken no absolutely I mean no disrespect to her and I adore everything she's done but in the past decade she seems to have been focusing almost exclusively on jazz albums with Tony Bennett, acting and making music for movies (A Star Is Born, Top Gun Maverick, and Joker Foile A Deux), and Haus Labs, with the Chromatica era being the only real exception to that (as well as Joanne ig but that was still very different to her dance pop origins). I think it's all amazing but it's also interesting to see one of the biggest and most important pop stars of the last 20 years spend so much energy on things that aren't pop music

Having Drake do a fake ass accent as a feature was definitely a wild choice that made me click off immediately. So I had no idea if this album would be good but glad I didn’t have the mind to give it a chance
All jokes and memes aside. When are we going to stop having any type of expectations for these generic pop albums? They're obviously not trying to make art, they're making a product. They have no intentions of impressing anyone with this music. As long as it's good enough to be background music in malls, that's going to give them the streams that they want.
I think we should hold people accountable so they don't turn the whole music industry into a place where cheap cashgrabs are the only way to achieve monetary success (which is the only worth they see in an album anyway). We SHOULD be disappointed. We SHOULD expect more. Because we deserve more. People not complaining enough about cashgrabs is how we ended up with a film industry where movies like Fast X and the Lion King remake bring in all the bucks, while smaller passion projects get shafted repeatedly.
Go support smaller, local artists. Especially the queer ones. DO NOT let the people with more money they could ever need earn even more money by cannibalizing our artform.

Cause most of the time the stuff isn’t this bad, many “generic pop albums” are really good. Ironically I wouldn’t even call this one generic she tried to do something that wasn’t generic when it clearly just wasn’t her lane. Her Latin influenced pop stuff before this has been really good.

Even though I'm not a fan of Camila's recent era, I think plenty of people just like to take advantage of the fact that she released this highly divisive album to call her immediately a "bad artist" or bad singer when the truth is that they already straight up hate her in the first place. I don't even think they've listened to some of her deep cuts and here they are criticizing in a way that feels like not only targeting her "current" work, but instead her "whole" career or artistry. They keep saying like "I can't think of a good Camila song" or "she's bland" and all that, but I really believe they've only heard her "most popular" and "overplayed" tracks and not the other ones that actually showcased her talent and potential.

CXOXO will probably make my top-20 list at the end of the year. I will probably put it AT #20 with the caveat that there are plenty of better albums released this year. However, I have listened to CXOXO a LOT. And I like it more each time I listen to it. It's kind of a classic "guilty pleasure" album, I guess. I mean, I don't believe in feeling guilty because of what I listen to, but it is an album that I think I like a lot more than the quality on display. It's not an album I will recommend to people. But I will also keep listening to it because sometimes dumb little pop albums connect in dumb little ways and CXOXO did that for me.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for bouncing in my car, pretending I'm spritzing Chanel No. 5.

The album is great! This is the first Camila album I listened to and ended up loving it.
i wish artists released more singles/eps/short compilations. I feel like that still has the potential to generate similar amounts of attention as an album with a viral moment, but releasing smaller batches of songs really consistently might also help keep the artist in the cultural zeitgeist if that's what they really wanted. Of course these singles would have to be good though

chanel no.5 and dade country dreaming go incredibly hard as well. BOAT is amazing too, the pitbull sample is top notch. I also sorta like the interludes lol. It really is nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. This is the first time I've ever gone out of my way to listen to an album by her and that stands for something imo, she's not quite there yet but she certainly could be if she keeps trying to evolve her sound and growing and I can admire what she attempted even if it came off a little try-hard.
