That split second of silence right at 1:05.... in between 1st and 2nd verse right after the chorus. Where the note comes crashing in and sends ripples up your spine.......... Yeah that's the magic of this song!
One of the best songs of the last 20 years. Powerful, sentimental, intense, they re a great band and the album "El Camino" Is Simply a masterpiece..Wow
Not only does this song kick ass in terms of rock n roll, but the lyrics are beautiful, and it has meaning beyond just catchiness. There's a sense of yearning and finding a spark of optimism after constant failures. Heard them live yesterday, and the echoes of thousands of people singing the same lyrics was haunting. Incredible band. My favorite band.
After years ahead I returned to this song, I cried, and now I could find a clear meaning to the song. It is not only for depression, it is about life going on, choices, failures, and being disconnected from what you were planning, what you dreamed and thought about yourself, it all disappears in reality, it stays in a "back part of the mind", it's still there to remind you, but you just go to another path after each step. The song is a conversation with your mind, operator is your conscience, and you keep talking to pick the right path, but end up with another result you did not expect or want. The result is clearly, you end frustrated, your desires, your relationships, the lovely advices end up being nothing, so nether the voices calling is about your mind and your surrounding, and the final result is: a broken heart. So broken, that is blinded by his own thoughts and already known ways to find cure, but you are constantly sabotaged by your own mind. Operator, please, you know the way, you know what affects you, but the more logical as it is, you do not get pass by it the way you want, and the years passed. Maybe it's time to forget what you know. As the tittle say, little black submarines is the small signs, the results, the steps, that keep coming small as they are, as black as what they result, taken as submarines by sinking from the reallity to a deep state of mind under the surface that you try to surpass. It's really in time for a deep change, the final part brings me angry, but enthusiastic too, the change from the accoustic part is clearly, the lyrics didn't change, it's all about your state of mind, hope was allways there. I'm pround of my evolution, and I know that better days are allways coming. Yep, it's a nice song xD
I saw them live in Cleveland last night and it made me cry for real. It just hit differently this year then it ever has. And what you said is spot on IMHO. Thank you for this post, because I couldn't figure out what made the tears come at the show last night.

I have been a music buff since the early 50's and I can guarantee THESE guys are absolutely right up there with the best of them. They should weather nicely over the years.
Ten years ago, when I was only 17, they played at a festival in my country. I was so hyped that they were part of the lineup as they have been my favorite band back then (and still are one of my favorites, but I like their older records more). I just HAD TO go there. So I took a summer job to be able to buy the tickets. It all worked out and so I attended the festival with a former friend of mine. Their show was a blast, naturally. And the following night , when I was already preparing for sleep in my tent, a guy played this song on guitar and sang along outside. I felt a strong pull to join him but was too shy to. It was special anyway. Just like the whole festival experience, also because it was my first. ❤
