There was a guy there at the time that was part of the gaurds for the president that used to speak at some of the churches over the years. I can't remember his name, but I remember hearing his stories from first hand knowledge.
I can only guess that he was finally, properly rehabilitated. If there's any purpose to the justice system, someone like Hinckley should be an example. He was a troubled young man but that was 40 years ago. An obsession with Jodie Foster combined with not being able to form a life for himself in the world resulted in him being tortured by his own demons. I can only presume that during his long confinement, they found some way to fix him. President Reagan did not die, and perhaps 40 years give or take is enough of a societal debt to pay for what he did to James Brady (whose life was altered but not immediately ended by the gunfire). I don't know. It's always been a tricky situation. I guess whatever medicine he's on has successfully balanced out his brain chemistry enough where he's a stable person now.
Insanity wouldn't be the fault of the person. He was just born this way or happen to become this way. Wouldn't it be unfair to the person on some grounds if he's kept in an asylum for all his life?
