I was compelled to try natto after learning about it several yrs ago, but I was mainly interested in for its nutritional information. Yes, it has an odor, but I think some of my fellow westerners exaggerate a bit. As for its flavor, it just taste fermented, but when you mix it with rice and egg it was very tasty. I am very pleased to have tasted and enjoyed natto 🙏.
I have been trying to cook Japanese food here in the US. I have watched many videos but your video is one of the best. Thank you for sharing. You inspire me to try more.
Thank you for sharing! Your comment on slurping reminded me of a business trip to Japan where my host told me (as we were about to eat soba) "It's OK to make a sound!" I appreciated his kind comment to allow me to excuse myself from Western manners when enjoying noodles!
Big shout out to this video. Since watching this almost a year ago, I always have Dashi, miso, soy sauce, seaweed, tofu, udon and mirin in the house. I make it routinely and love every bite. Would have never happened if it wasn’t for this video. Changed my life for the better. Genuinely, thank you
Hello Aki. I have recently watched all your video’s and it has inspired me to better my life in many ways. I’ve started to gradually transition to minimalism, I use my phone less, I’m conscious of my spending. Just one more thing I want to better in my life is my health. That’s why I want to ask you if you’d ever consider making a video about the way you train? Again, I really enjoy your video’s. You’re a funny and optimistic person.😊
Yay! Totoro's my favorite ghibli character! Honestly your Totoro pancake was excellently made; including even his whiskers I would've found quite tricky! Well done, indeed. Thanks again for a very inspiring video, Aki!
We are ghibli fans too, our first ghibli movie was Totoro.. our teenage son would ask us if we would watch ghibli films with him, so we do that as a family at times. Yes the Totoro pancake Aki did was great. I also noticed the whiskers.
Thanks for showing us the traditional recipes. Its amazing how much our cultures have changed since 1975. I'm going to have to get me a clay pot because the rice looks better than from my rice cooker. Great Video!!😎
Thank you for showing how to make the miso. I bought some but I wasn't sure what to do with it! All of your videos are so educational and entertaining!
As a chef i have some helpful tips you can cut vegetables ahead of time and for 2-3 days that way when you need you have ingredients for the dish and can control the portion size easily
Good to see you again, and with a perfect video. I’m trying to eat more variety such as having soup or salad with a meal instead of always bread or pasta. I was very happy to see you make miso soup, thank you for the lesson. Also I like natto and I am British!
Aki i love seeing what you eat in a day! Your videos are really really good, please keep posting, I can’t wait to go to japan! I was born in Brazil but my parents are Japanese. It’s very nice to keep learning about my heritage through your videos, ありがとう!
If you did a what I eat in a week video and it had a longer format I would watch the whole thing! The explanations mixed with the music was a total vibe.
I just watched this video and I agree with your sentiment about moms cooking these meals - its a lot of work, but for the benefit of the family. I think in the modern era, it would be ideal that one partner in a relationship could stay home and cook healthy and fresh meals for their family every day, while the other works. I love to cook, and my wife and I often discuss whether it'd be better for me to stay at home and care for the house. Would save a lot of money and be much healthier! Thank you for the introduction to these classic meals, I need to give making these a shot :).
My husband has a very demanding job, and I’m unable to work full-time because of epilepsy. But I think our situation has a positive side - we eat very healthy meals because I have time to cook. When I have a seizure-day, we tend to eat convenience foods like frozen pizza, which I don’t really like 🥴
So happy to see you are back!! I am currently very interested in nutrition and healthy food, so I was excited to see my favourite channel make a video like this! :-)
Your Totoro pancake turned out great! 🥞 I also like how you showed that you don’t necessarily like all Japanese foods like the wakame in vinegar, but that your American friend liked it. It helps to show that stereotypes are not always true! 😊
What a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing more of your culture. I love watching your videos. You have such kind and genuine character. Please keep making more!😀
I love Natto (fermented soya bean) , We called it Bekang Um, traditionally its is prepared by boiling the soyabean and wrap in wide special leaves and put it in pot and seal it with cloths and leave it in dry place for atleast three days...we have it as side dish, or mixed with some vegetables, or used it to make soup and add in stew and fried dishes...
In the US you can get a vinegary seaweed salad at Japanese restaurants and sometimes stores that have premade sushi. My favorite place includes a little cup of it in their lunch bento, which my kids don't eat so I get their's too!
Ive been trying to apply concepts of blue zones or close to it to my western diet. Its pretty simple and straightforward. You just gotta be consistent and walk everywhere
For breakfast I normally eat rice with an egg on it with smoked salmon. Watching your videos gives me a lot of new ideas. Thanks for sharing so much with us 😊
As a Dane, western guy, you have inspired me to actually try to live slightly Japanese by choice of foods. Mainly for health purposes. I have a daughter, she's almost 2 years old now, er don't need very nutritional, and i also feel it begins to take a slight toll on my own body for all the missing nutrition, aswell as somewat more stressed out as i don't respect the kitchen enough, so it easily becomes fast food. I know its wrong, and i want my daughter to grow up, knowing that nutritious and delicious meals, actually can be one of few keys to a healthy mindstate. I've always been looking towards the Japanese world for their body type and how they eat, but its usually a hard world to search up upon, as i mainly get so many recipes for deep fried noodles and fairly greasy ramen types. Which we all know isn't exactly healthy. You show small simple components and turn them into balanced, nutritional and delicious recipes, and i simply will try to emply it on my family. Thanks for your videos and thanks for you!
Very nice information to let Brother Samurai Matcho Journey know, very nice. I do Research, I love Japanese food, Originally from Guyana South America.
Just an idea to help with cooking. just try eyeballing instead of measuring every ingredients it will help with minimalizing dishes and help save time and be more relaxing. instead of a teaspoon of salt just do a few pinches of salt using your fingers. with cooking you don't need to be exact. :)
You are so right about the effort that goes into making Japanese food and Obento. My husband is Japanese and sometimes I make Obento for him and it is really tiring to prepare food in the morning, on top of breakfast! I really appreciate mothers and housewives much more now after become one myself. If you have any tips on simple and delicious meals, please share :)
Yes, it can be difficult when you don't know what you need, what items to shop for, or which items are available in your location: the US, Canada or other places. My transition into Japanese cooking was a long one. I would recommend that you do some research on the condiments, the foods, and then the recipes. Ask your husband what he enjoys most. Then pre-make some of the foods ahead of time and label them and put them either in the refrigerator or in the freezer. The more you practice the better it gets. I would recommend Honeyjubu's channel ua-cam.com/video/h_CIhXs9QA8/v-deo.html After finding her channel I thought "What a blessing! I wish I had her guidance back then" Although her kind of storage and pre-making foods is for a large family. You don't need to buy a bunch of things as she does. I wish you all the luck and I hope you enjoy cooking! 💕💕 Edit: I took the longer path because I am vegan. And I had to replace certain things from the recipes to make it edible for me. And most stores didn't carry most of the condiments I needed, had to buy some things online, still do, the company is very happy and gives me discounts.
So good to see you again! Most of it looks very good and healthy. I am glad I couldn't smell the smelly sock dish! 🤣🤣 I wonder if I could find that kind of oven in Canada. Thanks for the video!
Your food looks delicious and I find your minimalist lifestyle agreeable. I think too much stuff can feel like a burden, especially if not used. I love cooking and would love to try making Japanese food if I find the proper ingredients. So far I’ve only made pickled Japanese cucumbers and they were delicious, even more so with furikake seasoning☺️💕
I sure miss Japan. Studied abroad there back in 2011-2012. I'm back in the states now and sometimes I make traditional Japanese food cause I miss it. I hated Natto at first too when I tried it; swore I'd never eat it again. But after moving back to the states, I found myself missing it for some odd reason even though I only tried it once. I've been eating it regularly since and there's always at least one pack of it in my fridge.
Thank you for new video after long time. Good work. I really love natto too, but in my country Slovakia is hard to buy it. I eating it with rice and leek.
I’m Australian, and I love natto! My favourite lunch is natto mixed with rice, pickles and some grated carrot. Seasoned with a little soy sauce. Sounds weird, but I find it really satisfying and it keeps me full for a long time.
I was looking for Japanese meal in a day as I heard that the meals are healthy yet can make us full, it’s a good idea to lose weight. Love your video. ❤
The only complain I have with your videos,,,,, well it's making me NOSTALGIC and I really want to hop into a plane and go back to Japan to see my home stay family and my own family...... I really hope Japan open the boarders again..... I feel I'm missing so much when I watch your videos and reminds me of my time back in Uni and working and all the memories I made in Japan. Your channel makes me appreciate all the memories and wonderful moments, people, places and experiences I had in Japan..... I hope you make regular videos :) your channel is so good for the soul~~~~~ :) btw my home stay family's Obachan made my breakfast everyday in Beppu, since it's inaka I always had the Japanese traditional food, Shiro Gohan, Shake, misoshiru, takana ( this is my favourite) and some tsukemono......this was the daily morning meal! I miss my Obachan... and now that I look back I think I was so lucky to have such a family who took care of me so well.
1) Your American friend enjoying seaweed in vinegar is not that unusual. Lots of people in America eat boiled spinach or collard greens in vinegar, so that's probably pretty similar in taste and texture. 2) How do you bake a cake in a fish grill, or do you have some other kind of oven?
Actually, I didn’t think the meals you prepared were so complex or time-consuming. They looked quite simple to me. I’m looking forward to seeing what you prepare that’s more “up-to-date” and simple. In any event, thanks for another enjoyable video for all us Japanophiles.
thank you for your great videos. Do you grocery shop every day? when you buy fish is it always fresh? How many days in advance do you buy groceries, please? stay healty, and happiness.

I love the kimono, they are beautiful and seem to make one look majestic.
Always a good day when you upload! you're my favorite youtuber!
Thank you!!
Love how clean your communal kitchen is! Not common here in the states 😞
Yay! Totoro's my favorite ghibli character! Honestly your Totoro pancake was excellently made; including even his whiskers I would've found quite tricky! Well done, indeed.

Thank you for showing how to make the miso. I bought some but I wasn't sure what to do with it! All of your videos are so educational and entertaining!
I can also recommend nasu dengaku, miso-glazed eggplant, to use up miso. It's super easy and extremely delicious.
I missed your films! My mother used to put a pot of rice or groats under the duvet to make them soft and delicious. I'm from Poland. Greetings!
Thank you!!

Awesome food. Love Asian food. Healthy and tasty.

How do other Japanese people feel about your lifestyle ?
