- The Finale for Andor was near perfect. We take a look at how the entire season has been building up for this one moment. Andor does an excellent job taking all of the storylines from the season and brings them together into a neat tight package.

"Andor at its core is not really an action movie." Full agreement; this is why when action does happen, it feels important, risky, and always advances the plot. So good.
another reason the action feels risky is because it actually is. anytime there is a big action sequence characters actually die. there’s stakes
At it’s core it’s a story about the stakes of rebellions and the cost. And it’s a story of how tyranny isn’t an option; that as much cost rebellion can be it is still preferable to oppressive empires. It delves into the human need for liberty, and how tyrannical power is built on fear and fragility at its core. Definitely deeper than pew pew pew.
to be fair, the original trilogy and the prequels were similar in not being purely action. George Lucas often described it as a drama/soap opera if I remember correctly.

Brasso might be my favorite character this season. Even Bix was motivated at least partially by her desire for personal gain and profit.
Brasso seemed to really just care about protecting his friends, his elders, his city. He’d do anything for them. Loved it.
Yes, right. He is such a cool guy. Meeting Cassian in the Dungeon (if he (and Marva) only knew what Cas had gone through to be there... Then first as leader of the funeral in his "Salvation Army gear", and then beating the Imp with Marvas brick was so touching and moving. Awesome.
Fuck yes! Every scene Brasso's in shows how loyal, reliable, kind and courageous he is. We find out pretty quickly that Cassian is a pretty sketchy person even to his friends so the scene where he asks Brasso to cover for him without hesitation or even demanding to know why he provides his own narrative touches to the lie that add more credibility. I felt more worried for Brasso after that exchange as I liked him immediately more than Cassian and didn't think at time that he deserved that level of loyalty and was very glad that didn't come back on Brasso Obviously by the end Cassian's character arch is more redemptive and thats great but Brasso is definitely the friend we all need and an inspiration for the types of virtues we should aspire to emulate.
The mans an absolute G, after Marva passed he had a sleep over with B2 to comfort him. Im 6'1 burly (some might say intimidating looking) guy but for some reason that got me emotionally. Act of pure kindness imo something our real world is severely lacking.
he is the most stereotypical union man. hard working man in a dangerous heavy industry who has unyielding moral character, ready to beat men with guns with a brick and his bare hands in the name of that moral code.

@@Psyrus88 im a proud member of a union. it is the union which gave use the 8 hour day, minimun wage, health and safety regs. any "harm" the union does (your example is completely made up) is far outweighed by its benefts.

I love the vulnerability Diego Luna tried to suppress during this entire episode; his eyes constantly on the verge of tears.
And that HUG embodies everything I love about this show.

Andor is the gold standard for what we need in new Star Wars media. The creators took a secondary protagonist from a side film (Rogue One) and made him an icon for the franchise. We need more series like Andor
Karn and Mosk switching hats was great comic relief. The buildup of suspense with the band followed by Imperial preparation for a riot was perfect. Then the fighting gave me Dark Knight Rises vibes. Post credits scene was cool. This was an excellent Season finale.
I hope Season 2 continues the Karn/Mosk friendship! The hat scene was so unexpected and awesome!

Karn and Mosk worked security so I believe the hat switch was a subtle comment on how poor the Empire's facial recognition technology is. Switch hats and all of a sudden you're a new person. Otherwise it was very random.
What made the switching hats so much funnier was how they were in perfect sync with each other.
I think the Maarva would have enjoyed her brick being used as a weapon
It was poetic in a way. Even after death, Maarva was fighting for the cause.
That she even suggested it, probably as an offhand comment of where bricks can be placed, is my head canon.
12:18 I think Perrin doesn't actually have a gambling issue at all; he's telling the truth, but Mon Mothma's throwing him under the bus to protect herself because she knows the driver's listening.

I thought this was obvious.
He might not have issues right now but he clearly has a history of gambling and other indiscretions that had to be covered up. He is innocent of the new accusations but has enough dirt in his past to make the accusations believable to ISB.

It needs to be pointed out that Syril ran toward the explosion, which sheds a bright light his character. On the surface he seems like the kind of character we would expect to run off screaming. Syril has the brains and kahunas, but just lacks the experience. He could be very dangerous.

@@blobbything2986 No doubt that's a factor, but it demonstrates that being heroic is not just a fantasy to him. This would have been his second direct experience with a bombing incident that resulted in fatalities, and he chose to run right into the fray. The ultimate question becomes which side of the conflict will he finally land on?
Very astute observation. Like you said, it will be interesting to see which side he lands on in Season Two.
Andor’s last scene with Luthen was genuinely understated, masterfully so. Cassian essentially gives his weapon freely to Luther and quietly says “GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH!”
I loved that scene so much... Absolutely brilliant and full of meaning. The interaction between those two has a few layers worth exploring.
In a sense I feel that both grew from their previous cynical selves to a whole other level of passionate commitment for a fair cause... Like, embracing a new thing that's alive on its own
@@DAYMENEA Especially Luthen!! You get the feeling that he is fully committed to the rebellion but tired of working from the shadows without a guarantee that his efforts will payoff. Heck, he can't even trust other factions of the rebellion at this point. But he happens to be at Ferrix at the precise moment to see the fruits of the seeds he planted with the attack at Aldani. He is relieved that his massive bets paid off with Ferrix and, ultimately, Andor.
Bix: Cassian will find us.
Cassian: kill me
Luthen: ok
Bix: He's coming. We just need to wait a little more

He knows he needs to confront Luthen. Luthen’s basically got all the information he needs anyway - if all Cassian wanted to do was survive he would have tried to kill Luthen.

A masterful thing Tony Gilroy was able to pull off in this finale was not kill anyone (Rebels or Empire) of importance and STILL it was so impactful. I don’t know how many shows/movies I’ve watched where in order for the story to resonate, someone big has to die. Just another example of the next level storytelling of this series
Well, I know what you mean.. truly I do, but you're sort of wrong. Someone vital did die! Maavra! However, not a classical Hero's death! However her death EXACTLY has the impact you're describing. She wasn't really a POV character but she was of huge significance. Wouldn't oyu agree?

@@niembar3804 Maarva died in the episode before. Sorry, didn’t mean the overall series, but the finale. But agreed, her death did spark the rebellion, but all of the other major players (Bix, B2, Brasso, Vel, Cinta, Luthen, Cyril, Dedra, etc.) survived. So glad B2 made it. 😅
Thing is, a big important death can have meaning, but it has to be done right. With Rebels, Kanan's death did push the story forward, but it wasn't necessary for him to die. With Andor, no one dies because it's not needed. All the main players (Cassian, Dedra, Syril, Luthen, etc) are a part of the chaos and all show dramatic departures from their character: Cassian is focused on saving someone, Dedra fails, Syril succeeds, and Luthen fucks up his planning. Even Mothma, who isn't in the main melee, definitely isn't acting normally.
The best part is this actually would have been a good place for someone to die. Sure, it still woulda kinda felt unnecessary, but it would have settled a lot better than before because of those departures. For example, if Syril died, he still would have succeeded for once and shown Dedra that she can't run solo. The only change would have been the end of Syril's arc-in a way, Syril living would have felt more like a bonus than a major note (and I'm just using him as an example, this really could have applied to anyone).

This Cassian guy is shaping up to be a great character. I hope he continues a long career in the SW universe.
Such optimism! As for me, I see a Shakespearian tragedy. Probably Cassian will fake his death so he can escape the ISB and live a happy life with B2, but then B2 will think he's dead and have his memory wiped. Then Cassian will kill himself.
I give him 5 years or so. 🤣

I felt like Mon Mothma is using her husband's past gambling problem to her advantage.
She brought it up out of the blue and blamed him for doing it again only as a way to hide her culpability.
I don't think he is gambling again, but the empire will attribute the missing money and active accounts to it.
She pulled a dirty move. She's trying to dig herself out of a hole.
It was brilliant.

I loved how many of the characters' position changed during this finale. Dedra finally, for once lost control over the situation. Syril finally succeeded in something, which sounds kind of funny when you think about it. Luthen eased up a bit, he wasn't as careful as he had always been while wondering the streets of Ferrix. But the fact that this was so visible surely is a product of careful and comprehensive character development throughout this 1st season of Andor. Loved this finale
Another slip up on Luthen, he landed his ship in the same spot so Cassian knew where he would be.
It had a good deal of humanity throughout, the good and bad but always flawed beings that we are.
Best bit of the show, pretty much no perfect characters just people.

It was hugely satisfying to watch her evil arrogant confidence completely evaporate in seconds. I think Dedra will be staying closer to the office after this

It was like what you explained in an earlier video about the opening credit music. The first episode had one instrument. More instruments join with each episode.
Imagine Dedra has to move in with Syril's mom, and the mom is just like "This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them!".
I'm surprised nobody has talked about Cassian's own season 1 arc being concluded perfectly at the end of the episode,. . .he was constantly running from his problems and then at the very end he finally faced his problems, and literally faced his number 1 problem . .which was Luthen.
Luthen's been recruiting talent all the way back to Good Will Hunting!
That marching band was amazing. Cool to see space French horns, snare drums, trumpets, oboes, marching French horn, flutes and I’m sure there are others I missed (mellophone?). I completely nerded out during that being a former band nerd.

With the uniforms it put me in mind of a British Colliery band, part of local community built around their blue-collar jobs that well reflects the situation on Ferrix.
The melody that plays when they show cassian turning around inside the watch-tower...just hit damn hard, plus broken bix singing along in the next cut
and knowing the dedication of the team that made the show those are probably all functional
@@qpwdfgh4939 that shit gave me goosebumps. The melody itself is haunting enough as it is but the slightly out of tune instruments give it an ethereal and slightly menacing and unsettling quality.
Yeah, who would have thought that in a far far away galaxy a long time ago, and in a tiny, remote mining berg of a town, that they'd have (multiple) instruments almost identical to every piece from relatively modern western orchestras, which is in total contrast to those dumb space Vespas in Fett. Amazingly fresh...
the hat swap was the most meaningful scene other than marva's speech, Cyril swapping hats was a massive moment and sign of the friendship between the two now. and for all those who were wondering why... its so they can identify each other in the crowd

This is certainly plausible. But to add to your initial point, I took it as (I actually read I didn't pick it up myself) a sign of their friendship. Syril being finicky about his appearance (ie tailored suit) which his friend picks up on, and then gives him a matching hat to his uniform.
Easily the best live action Star Wars show. Nothing else has made me tear up and want to take up arms with the characters. Absolutely brilliant writing and acting!
The funeral march to Rix Road had a very odd tempo much like someone trying to regain their bearings as they wake from a trance, which to me is a brilliant metaphor for the waking up of the rebellion.
I didn't think of that watching while watching. This fits with how the band switched from a dirge to what sounding like marching music when they came up to the imperial HQ.
Yes. Also marching towards something of an unknown, it begins as a funeral but it may also end that way or not quite.

I think both Yoda's and Nemik's quote at their core, require full commitment to the cause, regardless of the outcome.
Absolutely. Where Yoda's quote attempts to fill Luke with faith in the Force (and ultimately himself), Nemik's quote attempts to give hope and inspire bravery in the face of the Empire. The writing on this show is so brilliant.
I think you're on point here. Is not about "trying" or not, it's about being engaged, committing, fighting back in the first place the inner battle against learned helplessness.
Nemik's "Try" is the exact same as Yoda's "Do".
Nemik is reffering to "succeed or die trying"
Which is commiting entirely to the cause even if it means great personal sacrifice, which is the same thing Yoda means.
Which is funny given Nemik is a pretty extremist rebel, and Yoda is the most middle of the road "wait and see" Jedi masters.
Kanan’s summary of Yoda’s message in Rebels summarizes it well. Don’t “just try” and go through the motions.
Commit, or don’t.
Both are for different points in a sequence. Try is for the motivation before the action. To not succumb to apathy. Do or Do Not is important once you have the motivation and move to action.
I can't wait for Andor Season 2 coming soon.

Andor made me feel like the Empire was this real and scary threat, that people can't stand up against, it was REALLY GOOD
I really love how removed most of the major characters are from this episode. Dedra for all of her scheming is knocked on her ass and nearly killed by the mob. Cassians main focus is on getting Bix out. Luthen displays the closest thing to surprise we've seen him so far in this episode, and for all of his schemes and plans he had little to no direct part in what's going on. Its the people of Ferix. The everyman who rises up and brawls with the empire, the everyday people of Ferix who drive the action through most of the episode. Their funeral for a community leader, their small act of defiance to excede the gathering capacity. One scarred and angry youth with a bomb. The bell tower man helping rally. They're the main character in this episode
Having the bomb go off in nearly the same place is such beautiful symmetry from the first arc to the final one. The difference is organized versus home grown rebellion
“The people,” as represented by the inhabitants of Ferrix, are collectively another important character in this story and have also had their own arc. In parrallel to Cassian’s own journey from worrying only about individual survival to being capable of self-sacrifice for the sake of the common good, we watch the seeds of rebellion take root and begin to grow. In telling the story of all the nameless people who will never get a medal for their sacrifice, we are reminded that each of us have a role to play in standing against tyranny. While it’s important to have inspiring tales of the likes of Luke Skywalker, those individuals are few and far between. But we can aspire to be (and actually become) the sort of person who acts to confront injustice and know that small acts add up, no matter how impossible the fight might seem. Andor’s story is the story of all of us and the conflict against the rebellion is recontextualized. It’s extremely political without being preachy, and exactly what we need today when we are so divided that we are tearing each other apart instead of fighting together.
And those who died during that riot will possibly be another brick to strengthen their walls or used against the Empire (Thank you, Brasso!)
It really fealt like the main character of the finale was ferrix itself and everyone else was just the b plot

Against CCP-China/Galactic empire.
It reminds me a lot about Lothal. In Rebels the whole planet evolved and had its own character arc throughout the series. I'm glad that they did this for Ferrix.
Syril is interesting because I feel like his obsession over Andor is partly because he can't stand that black mark on his record. The type to obsess over having perfect attendance, clocking in every day exactly on time, having a perfectly clean record.
So he wanted Andor to make sure that record was restored, which made him a wild card. I feel like he took his new boss casually "erasing" that black mark as an insult, as the problem was never actually corrected.
"new boss".. yes exactly. Making the problem disappear, isn´t the problem solving it. That´s like his start... "I am not tolerating that 2 Guards dead (no matter what morons) are being sweeped under rug.."
Syril is like agent smith, both the same and different from cassian/neo. Both wildcards, both outside of ruleset.
This is the best Star Wars has ever been.

Marva is kind of like Obi-wan in A New Hope, where she gives her life knowing she'll have more of an impact in death than what she could accomplish with what she has remaining in her life. And, like a force ghost, she reappears as a holo projection to share her insights on the Empire, and guide the people of Ferrix into fighting for their freedom.
I would have shot the droid the second she says "they" for the first time. Not a good plan.
We have no idea what motivated her words. The speech wasn't earned. She lost her husband but we didn't really go through it with her.
@F1Jones yeah, instead of covering it with his cape, I think he should have kicked it over, and the last part of her speech could have just been broadcast, or projected through another port. Considering how violent that Imperial officer was, the cape thing was timid.

I love your analysis of Brasso. The way he hugged Cassian in the tunnel, too. Like seeing his prodigal brother. Superb acting.
Dude there was so much wonderfully healthy masculinity in this show.
When Karn and Mosk switched hats, (and I may be imagining this) it looked as though Karn slightly smiled. Like he was happy to have a like minded friend finally.
Also, the way he speaks throughout the series has been very clipped, short, and with an air of urgency.
But after he saved Dedra and she said she should thank him, he very smoothly and humbly said "you don't have to..."
It felt like he was experiencing a side of himself, through the hat interaction with Mosk and the hero moment with Dedra, that he always longed for. Friendship and appreciation.
Again, I may have just imagined it.
I love that Marva still struck the first blow.
The finale was so absolutely moving and tense. During the buildup to the funeral and Marva’s speech I stopped and realized how fast my heart was beating, how I was holding my breath. Truly the mark of a talented team of creative people.
Dedra: karabast, I just wanted to capture Andor and entire planet blows up in our face.
Syril: your first time?
There's comparison to Marva joining the stone, and Nemik living on through the pad, especially to someone like Cassian who was raised in the passing mythos of Ferrix. Reading to the words of his lost almost friend in the mourning period of his mother, as he searches for answers.
I think there’s also a parallel in the guilt Cassian also likely feels in leaving Maarva to die without him beside her on Ferrix and Cassian’s piloting inadvertently getting Nemik killed
While almost none of Cassian’s screentime is wasted, it feels like a missed opportunity to not have Diego Luna chew the scenery in guilt over these 2

Very thoughtful analysis, Allen. My hot take, Andor is the greatest piece of Star Wars content since Empire Strikes Back.
it's refreshing to see a man actually looking up to a woman in power, even if it's in a slightly obsessive way, he at least has deep respect for her work

You look up to someone for their competence and not their gender. That’s why it’s so successful, because it’s not just about syril being a man and dedra being a woman, it surpasses gender and it’s natural not forced. Surface level is viewing this as looking up to a woman, while deeper level is looking up to a human that happens to be a woman. It shows that competence and good character writing will ALWAYS triumph contrived ideology.
Thanks for getting videos out so quickly!! It’s like having a friend with whom I can talk about the show. Andor really is the best SW content in years.

When I watched this riot scene, I couldn't help but think that this is how stormtroopers should have been portrayed. Stone cold killers with total precision. Storm troopers were an actual terror in this scene to watch. It was amazingly terrifying watching how cold, calculated, and methodical they were. They were the actual elite corp they were made out to be. it's a shame no other show has done them justice.
this is earlier in the timeline, more stormtroopers were war veterans at this point, later on there's more mass recruitment in response to the rebellion/intent to have occuping forces everywhere and less training , also the force either has less of a deep involvement keeping those present(raising the likelihood of missed shots) alive or guided some to their deaths , there's a great old comic from the clone wars era that showed some jedi literally being guided into the paths of fire to keep others alive that would have greater impact later indicating the possibility of things like that .
@@Marcusjnmc yeah, but Kenobi is also earlier in the timeline, and Stormtroopers here are clowns. One scrawny girl defeated two of them with the weakest slap ever seen.

The massacre of shooting rioting but unarmed civilians. It’s like the Boston Massacre and many other in histories of uprisings. It’s EXACTLY what Luthen wanted. The more innocents they shoot down the more the rebellion grows, rage is it’s fuel.
Salman was hung. They mentioned it in the episode that they tortured Bix.

All I gotta say is I love the parallels between Syril and Dedra.
Both driven, both doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
Both equally in experienced in field work, at least in the begining.
But Syril already lived his worst day on Ferrix.
Which is just genius writing and acting, Dedra is shell shocked by the op going wrong, Syril has been here before, and his adaptability and drive to succeed allowed him to learn, so that under fire he did just fine.
I could care less if they have a romantic story, what I really want to see is Dedra having to navigate the ropes of abject faliure, and have to rely on Syril as a guide, and Syril being completely out of his element by having to deal with a high ranking imperial who happens to be a women, who somehow he's ended up effectively being a guide/assistant to.
Because if anything I want to see both of them have character growth, Syril growing to not need to prove himself, and Dedra learning how to balance her unbridled ambition with the care and planning necessary to pull it off- and of course Sgt. Tactical Blueberry along for the ride.
Edit: also the complaints about fan service (not Allen's, just casual viewers), for someone who's studied the "art of star wars" books from way back when said books were good, this series was full of fan service. You just need to watch the background.

But if something is just what is shown without the layers and thought and craft... well there wouldn't be much to talk about. The "chaos" of the band at first is everyone tuning their instruments and harmonizing, it's completely normal, especially for a band that's well practiced but seldom plays. Everyone is making sure they're ready right before they all sink up and play together

The Season Finale was brilliant, masterful by any objective standard.
This whole Season we've witnessed the build up of tension and frustration on Ferrix, the people's anger growing. The funerary procession moment, that was the fuse being lit.
It was so amazingly executed, the powerful and sad marching hymn, the whole of Ferrix joining in behind Brasso carrying Maarva's brick in a very sacred and solemn ritual, the music picking up as they march forward, culminating with Maarva's speech that acts as the drop that spills the vase.
That scene just represents what Luthen was speaking about earlier, about people sitting on the edge needing something to jump off and take a side. That was it, Maarva was the spark that lit the fire of rebellion.
And once again, Andor shows characters having realistic reactions to the events occurring before them. Cassian is distressed the whole time he's on Ferrix, he blames himself for not being there when Maarva passed and Bix was imprisoned. The latter suffers from severe trauma. A few of the Imperials keep their cool but a lot of them have little combat experience and are overwhelmed and scared, giving the rash decision of opening fire on the crowd which only makes things worse and escalates the riot to a full-blown attack on the Imperial forces. The civilians either flee and scatter before they are caught in the crossfire and the explosions or take up arms because they've had enough and have little to lose anymore. After being swept by the crowd and narrowly saved by Syril, Dedra is in visible shock. None of the characters are casually going through the events unfolding before them.
That is the Star Wars i like, that is the Star Wars i want more off. The show is gritty, grounded and the most realistic kind you can expect in a Franchise full of exceptional protagonists who are often highly trained Warriors or Force-wielding superhumans going through various conflicts physically and mentally unscathed unless someone actually close to them dies. It highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each side. The people of Ferrix and the Rebels lack means and resources, but together they are strong and can inspire others. The Empire and the ISB especially is too complacent, having a lofty perspective from secure far away offices on Coruscant or local Imperial HQ, but they're out of touch. If she truly is as smart and she seemed to be, it's a mistake Meero will not make a second time.
I think what happened was the permit only allowed for thirty or forty people and when the entire town showed up it really pissed the garrison captain off. Remember Nemik talks about the control the empire desires. And then when empire opens fire it makes sense too because that kid threw a pipe bomb.
The recurring theme of the series is that the Empire does not know how to "govern". They tend to jump straight to "military occupation" rather than trying to solve any of the local problems.
Nemik see’s the parallel to Aldhani. The empire in a subtle way takes piece by piece while dismantling the culture of the systems like they did with the religious natives there. Which is a effective way. But there will be some day when there is one to many. One systems which doesn’t let them dismantle their traditions and simple way to have a life. One to spark a larger rebellion and move the line forward for the cause without knowing they enlisted to it.
The manifesto really was imo the best deep part of the finale because it connected all arcs to what causes people to revolt and sacrifice in a natural rational way, fitting together with the entire show telling how ordinary people started the emperor‘s fall. Telling the message of GL that the force „is in all of us“ from a complete different view.
On the other hand the individual solders had really impressive discipline, they did not fire 1 shot until ordered to. How many police or solders can you say that in the modern era. Not sure why they didn't have some sort of stun weapons since those clearly exist in Star Wars.

I love the idea of Dedra, Syril, and Sergent tactical Blueberry figuring out the entire rebellion from Syril Mon's couch. It's complete ridiculous but would be really fun that with everything they had the empire was outperformed by three washout working from a couch.

This episode was fantastic! I love how unsettled the Imperials get with the sounding of the bell/gong and how the bell ringer keeps sounding the bell throughout the episode. It symbolizes the rebellion because the sound pulses and spreads throughout the city much like the fires of rebellion will spread throughout the galaxy. Also, the scene with the bell ringer spartan kicking the stormtrooper off the bell tower was fantastic.

This season finale was brilliant. And part of the brilliance sort of refutes one of your points, particularly that "The Empire couldn't see the explosion that was going to happen on Ferrix". Because nobody could see that, not even the people. For the people, their flooding the funeral was nothing more than a little civil disobedience, because they wanted to honor one of their heroes. They weren't planning any violence. Even the kid who built the bomb didn't seem to have a clear plan until things kicked off. And the Empire at least held back in the face of the crowd ignoring their limits of 40 people, merely staging themselves and not acting aggressively until the hologram speech flat out called for war against them.
In fact there have only been two people in this show who seem to have some idea of what might happen in such a scenario. Luthen, who purposely goads The Empire into being more tyrannical in order to create these scenarios, and the kid with the "manifesto" who died. Among the imperials, Daedra at least seems to have an inkling of why the Empire's reaction to the heist was a bad idea and doesn't react stupidly to perceived provocation. So I don't think the Empire was particularly stupid here, just that something kicked off that nobody really expected and chaos ensued.
And the fact they did all of that in this episode and still managed to make it feel organic is brilliant. They didn't need the Empire to be bumbling or over-the-top villainous. They didn't need any special group planning something or some Jedi to show up and spark something, or anything like that. Just a sequence of events leading to "in hind sight" inevitable outcomes based on nothing more than human behavior.

Yeah, this episode felt like a homage to the Arab Spring, personally.
I've seen a lot of people on different channels and platform saying that Andor was to slow, you could have sped things up or wrapped them up faster. And tho everyone is entitled to their own opinion and in the end its personal taste, i feel like that Andor had maybe not perfect, but damn good pacing. Yes, some episodes tended to be slower, but that gave the scenes and the audience time to breathe, to work through emotions that were created and shown, without blasting into the next scene without having time to work through it.
And i think a drama needs this to feel complete, something that gets overlooked in a lot of modern shows, that moment of rest like in a good stage play. Something Andor also was from time to time, especially when Luthen essentially plays a play inside a play.
I remember feeling that certain episodes and stories dragged on too long, then reflecting on them and actually not wanting them sped up. The slow burning fuse was critical to the season as a whole, and I recognized that as early as episode 3. Yes, it dragged, but that was fully intentional. It wasn't so much as to be tedious, but just long enough to be uncomfortable, parallel to the stress of living under The Empire.

What I think worked the best with Andor is that it had clearly established story arcs that had beginning and ends with most of the arcs being smaller devices inside the main arc of the story as a whole with the Luthen and mon Mothma stuff being a singular clear secondary arc.

Mon's husband might not have been actively gambling , but he might have had a problem in the past. She however used it to throw the ISB off track, she knew Klorin or whatever the drivers name was was actually spying and listening in, she said so in the antiques ship earlier, so it was all for his benefit, she wanted him to hear it to help cover her tracks. I also think her husband was genuinely frustrated with the sudden accusation, the only thing that made him chew it up was that he had had a problem in the past and understood where it might have come from. Her husband might not be that bad, apparently, He's a spoiled brat, but she has all the wealth and money he's just the +1 that's supposed to try and look good and not embarass her too much because her parents got them paired up and now she's stuck with him and viceversea.

"Andor" is the kind of story I have wanted from the Star Wars Universe since the late 70's when 1st Movie came out. A solid character driven story line that does not have a single character who is, is related to or has even ever heard of a person in the Skywalker Clan. This is supposed to be a Universe of 100's of Billions of Sentient Life Forms, they can not all know a Skywalker who will swoop in and save the day.

Nemik's recital of his manifesto reminded me of Sun Tsu's Art of War, John Boyd's Discourse on Winning and Losing, and Musashi's Book of Five Rings. It sort of mirrored Sun Tsu's and Jon Boyd's sentiments regarding the moral advantage of combat and its psychological impact on combatants in terms of drawing people to a just cause in having the moral high ground and how those relate to insurgency. Also, Nemik repeats the line, "Remember this..." ..which reminds me of Musashi's constant refrain, "I cannot explain this, you must know it to be true." Which both hearken to the concepts of faithful perseverance, and the deep intuitive knowledge that come from training and experience respectively.
The emotion and tension of the funeral procession was absolute perfection.
I'm not sure Perrin was gambling, I got the impression that the entire argument in the back seat was a show Mon Mathma was putting on for her driver and the ISB.
A second after she uttered that sentence, I knew she was throwing him under the bus to help cover her tracks. What was interesting, was that he actually seemed to care what Mon thought of him. If the marriage was as loveless as I thought it was, he would have snickered at the thought, or ignored her.

Andor is genuinely my favorite TV show of all time. It has been so amazing to see how Star Wars can be elevated from being a fun action adventure series to something truly masterful, especially after the bar has been set so incredibly low by garbage like Kenobi and BOBF

Maarva's hologram reminds me a LOT of the ghost of Obi Wan talking to Luke, the dead guiding the living from the afterlife. Maarva became more powerful in death, just like Obi Wan warned Vader during their final due. When the imperial guard tried to cover the droid with his coat to stop the projection of her image, she shouted "fight the Empire!" as she now looked like a cloaked figure, she became something like a "common people's Jedi" encouraging them to use their Force.

This is the most intelligent Star Wars has ever been and that's not meant as an insult towards what came before it. This is simply peak storytelling set in the Star Wars universe.
This season did an amazing job at getting you to care about these characters from farrix, to narkina, even the ISB on coruscant they did a great job at humanizing these characters don’t even get me started on the writing was phenomenal and I hope they keep this standard
Side note, Perrin might have actually been 100% honest about not gambling considering the context and it might have been Mon Mothma throwing him under the bus to make the debts in her accounts to look like they were from gambling debt knowing full well the driver was listening in.

Him “defending himself against allegations” would give credibility to those allegations.
This show is fantastic. Especially how each death has weight and consequences.
I love the way she's shaking and he's so perfectly calm. He knows he's exactly where he is supposed to be, his faith has been vindicated. Hers is probably as shaken as she is. She told them time and time again what she didn't want. But she took her eye off the thing she really needs to watch, The Empire.
Totally agree that ANDOR is the new gold standard. We already pretty much know what to expect from Mando S3, and I’m fine with that, it’s really not a series that needs “fixing”.
However, I fully intend to hold Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte, to the bar of quality set by ANDOR. 🙂
Excellent review, you summed up the finale and the season brilliantly. The show highlighted how people feel alone and desperate, but are 'saved' when they think of others and unite with them. Andor's metamorphosis really started to begin in prison when he saw how a large group can overwhelm the Empire. Kino Loy's sacrifice combined with the manifesto made Cassian realize the power of people. I don't know if he really understands that he needs to be part of a group -- he still seems hesitant to show he needs people for himself-- but the show does highlight how a community can strengthen an individual. Ferrix's people even included B2-EMO; he was part of their community and cared for and even rescued. I noticed in the Dedra arc how shaken and out of control she was after the riot began. She was terrified and did not know what to do without her gun and soldiers backing her up. Syril, however, moved in with confidence and coolness, perhaps having learned this after his earlier failure in the exact same place. Still insecure, their awkward chemistry together was brilliant. The only two complaints (so to speak) I have with the series as a whole are not addressing what happened to the mother and son hostages during the heist. I know Cinta likely killed them, but wouldn't the Empire have used their deaths as propaganda against the rebels? It seems like a missed opportunity there to potentially portray the rebels as ruthless. The other odd thing was why Cassian and Luthian tied up Syril and left him instead of just killing him when they get the jump on him in the house on Ferrix. Cassian does not hesitate to kill, so to see him have mercy on the commander of the corporate forces is odd. Tying him up seems so odd to me -- it takes time and they didn't have that. It would have been easier to have used the stun settings on a blaster and just knocked him out for a few minutes. I'm glad they didn't kill him, but it seemed to me like an odd choice. One last compliment for the show -- Gilroy did not hesitate to make the series look real. He used common things and didn't feel a need to try to make everything look futuristic or unidentifiable. Tools, clothing, even buttons on elevators looked logical, instead of the minimalist approach used on many SW movies and series. It gave a sense of 'realness' to the series that really worked well and made you feel like you could live there too. I love this series and can't wait for the second season, hopefully it won't be two years to wait.

Nothing but the feels with your comment on the manifesto. This IS how you do a season finale. We got caught up in the whole Kennedy/Johnson v. Favreau/Filoni versions of Star Wars that we forgot there are others out there that can write excellent narratives that work exceptionally within the SWU. Great job on this one, GT! There is a theme I dont see people talking about: communication. The secret phone lines. The messages left on tablets. The prisoners warning eachother about level 2. Andor finding out about his mom. It's in every episode. Not sure the deeper significance but there is a thread of a theory there.
You put mad, heart and soul into your breakdowns. Love it.
It's great you called out the part Dedra almost got killed by the mob. That part got me because where I grew up, there were riots in my grandparents' time in which people actually got torn apart alive. We still learn about it in school: apparently hardened reporters covering the riots threw up at the sight of the remains. For a moment I was actually afraid that was about to happen on screen to Dedra...but fortunately, this is Disney and not Mad Max: Fury Road.
Excellent analysis of Dedra and Syril. I don't think Dedra will be demoted. She's ruthless enough that she'll blame the Ferrix fiasco on the prefect. She'll claim they didn't adequately control the people, etc.

Just want to say that you're a brilliant mind and your review is well thought out, well edited, and really does an outstanding job of explaining not just this finale but the season as a whole.
Enjoyed your coverage of this show so much. I can’t wait to see where they take things in season 2.
The fact that they included an audio arsis during the seconds before the bomb detonated was so perfect. All of the tension of the series had built up to that moment. When he threw the bomb, the viewers were at the height of 12 episodes worth of tenstion being built up. The 1st 40 minutes of episode 12 just kept building tension higher and higher, until that bomb detonated. THAT is definitely some of the very finest story telling in cinema/TV history. To be able to sustain that level of engagement and still keep going higher is insane.
The writers could easily have written the story as the residents of Ferrix overrun the imperials and win the day, but instead, they went all battle of Hoth and showed just how brutal, powerful and capable the Empire is. They even showed us the deadly accuracy of the storm troopers that Obi-Wan talked about.
I feel like Linus Mosk has changed his mind about working for the corpo's or the empire after what happend on Rix road, completely escalating every thing rather then keeping the peace. Just the way he sat there at the end gave me the impression he is re-thinking every thing.
