  • This rare film of the Five Jades was taken at a United in Group Harmony Association meeting/show at St. Joseph’s Church Auditorium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on January 19, 1980. U.G.H.A. President and founder Ronnie Italiano invited the group to appear and entertain their membership with an acapella set.
The Five Jades were formed by Hector Rosado in the Bronx, New York near Rosedale Avenue in 1963. The group went through numerous personnel changes while recording a pair of singles for the Your Choice label, and one which was issued on Mellomood Records under the name of the Five Shadows, all in 1965. The recording lineup initially included Spencer Jackson, Rosado, Joey and Bobby Figueroa, and Ray Goodwin. Dennis Cerrato soon joined, replacing Bobby. A new lineup, Cerrato, Jackson, Manny Hernandez, Junior Roman and Tony Moreno recorded the album, “Acapella Showcase Presents The Five Jades singing Velvet Soul for Lovers Only”, also in 1965.
In August of 1972, 37-year-old Manny Hernandez was shot and killed during a robbery in his family’s Crown Heights grocery store in Brooklyn, New York. His younger brother, Anthony Hernandez, ultimately replaced him in the Five Jades. At the time of this performance, founding member Hector Rosado and longtime recording member Dennis Cerrato had reunited, with Anthony Hernandez, Frankie Izquierdo and Alfred Rivera. The quintet had been working on an acapella album of standards sung in the modern harmony style which would be released in 1980, “The Past Is In The Future”. The first four songs in their five-song set, “I Wish You Love”, “The Lady Is A Tramp”, “What Kind of Fool Am I?”, and “It’s A Blue World”, were all included in the album. The encore, “My Girlfriend”, originally recorded by the Cadillacs, was one of the Five Jades’ 1965 releases on Your Choice Records.
A new album, “Playground and Five Jades”, followed in 1982. An additional album, “The Five Jades Respectfully Serenade The Flamingos”, consisted of new recordings and archival material that had been recorded in 1986 but never released. At this point, Rosado, Cerrato, Hernandez, and Izquierdo were still in the lineup, with Hector’s brother, Richie, one of the other founding members, now singing in place of Rivera.
The Five Jades and the United in Group Harmony Association shared a mutual respect, friendship and working relationship for the better part of 30 years until the death of organization President and founder, Ronnie Italiano, in 2008.
