I find it quite pointless as well. That was my initial thought. Doing double work for using voice chat. I might as well just use phone to chat with others on discord. They need an actual app on ps5. You can’t even share screen to them on the voice chat after transferred
FYI: I couldn't get it to work with the camera or a QR app. I did not realize Discord had its own built in QR scanner. When I used that it worked first time.

You don’t need to have your activity be public you just have to update the console and link the discord through linked services
Mine wasn't showing on discord app until i enabled activity

Xbox also required a phone when it first launched, I'm sure Sony will integrate it properly into OS as well. Not a biggie.
