  • There has been a fair amount of press recently about quality control problems with Tesla in general and the Model Y in particular. I picked up my car at the beginning of October and in this episode I discuss any issues I have experienced in the 5500 miles I have driven since then. Update: check out Episodes 23 & 24 to learn about a problem I had with my front left brake and how the Roadside Assistance and repair Service experiences were. Enjoy!

      I have some friends with a Model 3 from about the same time frame and they haven’t had any problems with theirs either. Moreover, I was speaking with someone who owns a Lexus LC coupe - about twice as expensive as my Model Y - and they have had two incidences with brake rotors themselves so I’m wondering if this is perhaps a component that has problems across the industry.

    As others have said, excellent content as usual. I picked up my Y on November 1st and have 4830 miles. It definitely grates me that the range is not as good as advertised but then again I probably saved $300 in gas for the month of November so I will work around the range issues. The one disagreement I have is the windshield noise. I really do not think my car is loud at all. I have at times driven from one destination to another with no music or news playing because it is so quiet. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for the great feedback and congrats on your Model Y! When I was taking pictures of the base of my windshield for yesterday's video I was wondering if maybe this would, in fact, be a manufacturing defect because it almost appears like a couple inches of the windshield lining is either warped or missing. I think I may report that (through the app? But not sure how to get it officially repaired while on the road) and/or just get a noise reduction kit off line or just put some rubber seal in there myself. Good to know yours is much quieter than mine. Maybe those double pane windows do help! As for me... I have a relatively loud $54,000 car... womp womp! Ha...

      @@goingelectric7826 I have June 2020 build model y and have same annoying wind noise and more so once you go above 65 mph. Have tried reporting to service center multiple times but every time they report no issues found and that they also performed sonic test . So no luck with service center , hope you have better luck. Only thing left to try is the RPM wind noise reduction kit

    • @goingelectric7826

      It’s interesting because some people report the wind noise and other people don’t. I have purchased the RPM road noise reduction kit and also the wind noise band that goes around the glass roof. I am making a video about it but it’s gonna take a couple weeks because I needed to get some replacement seals. And why? Because 1) I read Japanese and the back door seals are labeled as left and right in Japanese but apparently their labeling is based on looking at the car standing in front of the car rather than sitting in the car - so I screwed that up and I’m waiting for replacements, and 2) I applied the front door seals just as the instructional video shows BUT IN FACT you should install the seals 1cm/half inch *up from the bottom of the door ledge* AND NOT ALONG THE LEDGE otherwise it gets smooshed outward when you close the door and looks like 💩 . FML. So those are getting replaced, too. Ha! But the frunk and trunk seals were great, along with the door A & B pillar seals. As for the glass roof seal... it took me four tries to get it to fit right. The first three times the seal came dislodged in the wind at high speeds on the highway and flopped around like crazy and I had to take it off completely and put it back in later. So once I get the replacement seals I’ll have something to report on. 😊 At this stage my advice would be: pay a professional. Ha!

    I picked my car up early Oct. too. I had wind noise from the rear passenger window. I went to RPMTESLA.COM and bought the Model Y Wind Noise Reduction Kit. It worked absolutely great! I wasn't expecting it to but wow. Another guy had a problem with his drivers window shield. His noise went away too. It is $24 now. I paid $40. You should try it. $24 is worth it. My gamble at $40 paid off! I'm so glad it worked. You should try it especially how much driving you do.

      Hi! Humorously, I actually did purchase some of those items and had them shipped to my mom’s house since I’m still on the road and will be visiting her before I get back to CA. I also submitted a service ticket with Tesla and will arrange a mobile assessment somewhere along my tourney. If they can fix that then that will be my Plan A. If not, then the wind reduction pack will be my Plan B. 🌬🚙

    I just got my MY a week ago and have fully charged to 326 mile range. I’m in SW Florida where it’s rarely below 50 degrees and I’m sure that helps.

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому

      Curious: regardless of what the display said your range was, were you able to actually drive 326 miles on that single charge? I could barely get 190 miles from my battery yesterday driving from South Padre Island to the SpaceX facility in Boca Chica up to the supercharger station in Kingsville, TX. If you were able to drive that far on a single charge, that’s wonderful. I want your battery!!

    Are you still happy with the blue paint color choice? How has the paint done / held up in the colder regions you’ve driven? I’ve heard the darker paint on Tesla vehicles tends to be “thinner” so it’s apparently more susceptible to scratches and the like. Keep up the good work, btw!

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому

      I *LOVE* the blue paint. As I mentioned in the video, I've traveled 5,500+ miles ranging from warm West Coast weather to 9F weather in Montana/North Dakota to frosty but not frigid weather in the Midwest. And through it all, I think the paint is as good as new. Also, when I was driving trough Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, I was shocked at how many pebbles, rocks, dirt clods and globs of mud were thrown up at my car and windshield. And through it all, I have no observable scratches or dings, and that has surprised me because Tesla paint jobs have such a bad reputation. That said, while Supercharging, I have chatted with a number of other owners who have applied ceramic wraps to their cars, either partially or fully. But as you know, that can get pretty pricy. So far, I haven't had *any* problems with my paint, either in terms of the paint job at delivery or how it has held up over the past 5,500 miles. And really, I am pragmatic about all this: I know that rocks, dings and scratches will eventually get my car and I will just have to be fine with a fair amount of wear and tear, but I personally won't be too precious about it. But if my windshield ever cracked, that's something that would bug me and that I'd repair pretty quickly... like a cracked phone screen. Haha...

Nothing more sophisticated than that. I have downloaded a couple more sophisticated video processing apps for my iPad but they were pretty advanced and I still have a day job to focus on. Haha! In Texas currently visiting my dad then will be driving around the South for Christmas. 🎉🚙 🇺🇸

    Great intelligent and informative videos - thank you. i don't have a Tesla; just curious - what happens if you accidentally move the gear up (to reverse) while driving?

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it. 🙏 As for shifting into reverse while driving, I have not done that yet. I am imagine the car is programmed not to allow such a thing to happen at higher speed. For example, the car is also programmed to not let you drive away from the charger if the charge cable is still plugged into the vehicle. When a car is really just a computer with four wheels, a lot of new things and precautions are possible. But if you are going less than I believe 4 or 5 mph, the car does let you shift into reverse and as you slow down the car will go into reverse. It’s a pretty smooth transition. Or from reverse into drive. I quite like that.

    With regards to the rear crossbar above the second row seats- when the seats are reclined, do you find yourself hitting your head? Ive seen another reviewer on youtube complaining about this issue. You seem like a pretty tall guy and i wonder if you have any problems with this. Thanks :)

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! I'm 6'1" tall and just went out to my car to answer your question. There are three positions that the back seats can be set to. I'll refer to them as upright, middle reclined and far reclined. My head does not touch the rear crossbar in the upright and middle reclined position. If I am sitting totally properly and erect in the seat, it does touch the crossbar in the far reclined position. However, if I loosen up and slouch down an inch then I do not touch the rear crossbar in the far reclined position. Although in practice if I were 6'1" and sitting in the back seat for any significant amount of time I would just set the seats to upright or middle reclined. But like many midsized cars, those of us in the 6'1"+ range often have some issues in the back seats of cars which just means that, as a courtesy, we should always be allowed to sit in the front seat. Haha... But if you have a car full of people who are 6'1"+, it's likely they would need those back seats to be set to upright or middle reclined. That aside, the great news is that in the front seats there is a crazy amount of headroom above the driver and front passenger and the same is true for most people 5'11" and below even in the back seat when set to far reclined. Moreover, the seats are super comfortable all around. And I will add: the view from the back seat looking forward to the front part of the passenger cabin and up through that huge pane of curved glass of the roof is so beautiful that I am jealous of everyone who gets the privilege to sit in the backseat and enjoy such a lovely experience! Of course, I'm not letting anyone else drive my car but me so I'll likely never find out first hand. 😭

    Does it feel to have a need for an air suspension?

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому +1

      Hmmmm... I would say that I don't see myself as the sort of person who would need an after-market air suspension either to lower or raise the car. In terms of ride, with my 20" wheels, I would say that the ride is solid and grippy to the road, but not excessively firm or harsh. At the same time, it is not a soft, flowing boat whatsoever either. If you'd want a super soft ride, then a Tesla Model Y wouldn't be for you, but if you like a firm sporty but definitely not harsh ride, the Model Y would be a great choice. In chatting with other owners, I've heard that the 19" wheels provide a softer ride whereas 21" is when things get super firm and a bit harsh (which some people really like).

      I did not but now that you mention it maybe I should! I’m doing so much driving these days that I have a feeling my car is going to hate me when I’m done with it all. I’m surprised by how many rocks and other things can be tossed up off the road by vehicles in front of you which hits your bumper, hood or windshield! Grrr...

    how often do you charge your battery to 100% vs the recommended 80%?

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому +1

      Based on what I have read and some good viewer comments on other videos I’ve made, I virtually never charge the battery to 100%. As far as I understand it, a battery prefers to be at a steady state around 50% and loathes to be at either 0% or 100%, so depending on how far I am driving on a given day or how many times I am supercharging, I typically try to keep the battery between 20-80%. I’ve seen online that many people who do home charging and don’t drive that much on a given day keep it between 40 and 50%. However, if I’m going to be doing a lot of driving between supercharging I will bump it up as high as 90-93% so that I have enough juice to not only get to the next supercharger but perhaps to take some small detours in between. But 100%? I don’t think I have gone that high. The other reason is that the speed of charging rapidly declines as you get up to and beyond 85-90%+. So charging the battery up to 95% to 100% takes far longer than charging it from 75 to 80%. You have to really want that extra energy between 85 and 100% to charge the battery that much. Lastly, I am seeing that there are superchargers between cities typically every 100 to 150 miles and my car typically gets between 180 to 240 miles per charge (ranging from super cold weather to mild or warm wealthier) so in practice I almost never feel compelled to charge up beyond that 85-90% range for my long distance driving.

    Love the channel and content, I’ve been watching since the first video! As you’ve done a fair amount of content related to stats/data I was wondering if you use any of the Tesla 3rd party stats apps? I’ve been using teslafi.com for the last few weeks and find it amazing. It logs every piece of data you can think of including charging costs, trip efficiency, and a million other data points all in more or less real time (no affiliation here just a happy user!). There are plenty of others as well, but I’ve not tested them.
    I got my MY in Nov (64xxx vin) and had three panels damaged in the back seat area and my passenger side speaker is only partially attached, so not quite problem free for me. All cosmetic and slowly but surely Tesla is fixing the issues in my driveway via mobile service, but parts seem to be hard to get as I’m still waiting on one panel and they’re telling me it’ll be 12/29 before the speaker is replaced (it works fine, but makes a fun tapping noise every time I turn or go over a bump).

    • @goingelectric7826
      @goingelectric7826  3 роки тому

      That’s crazy! Almost kinda funny tho with that tapping noise... which would drive me bonkers. Good to see that they are fixing it bit by bit though. I must say I am particularly glad that I don’t have any significant problems with my car because doing all this driving I’ve been wondering where or even how I would get anything fixed while on the road. As for third-party apps, I have looked into some of them but they seem to require logins to my Tesla account and I’m always a little conservative when it comes to data sharing, yadda yadda. The apps would probably improve my life significantly but I will have to warm up to the idea first.

    • @mattwork99
      @mattwork99 3 роки тому

      @@goingelectric7826 you and me both about the third party access to the Tesla account. They do indeed require access at a programmatic level to your Tesla account, at least for teslafi they’ve come up with a way to exclude access to car controls unless you specifically require it but there’s trust involved for sure! For me the data they get would be fairly trivial to google on me anyway, apart from the car trips themselves which is certainly a personal comfort level issue. I enabled multi factor auth on both my Tesla main account and the Teslafi account but at the end of the day, no question, a third party has access to my car data until I change the main Tesla password.
      As for the the speaker, its frustrating for sure! Tesla’s mobile service temporary “fix” yesterday was 3M double sided tape to hold it to the door, which ,due to the cold weather, became useless a few hours later. Looks like I’m waiting for a few weeks at least until they get the replacement speaker!!
