Quick recommendation regarding irrigation. HDPE pipe--it comes in coils 300-400 feet long is a better solution for running irrigation main lines underground. It can handle freeze thaw cycles, so it won't crack if, or inevitably WHEN you forget or don't blow it out before winter. You can also simply drag it under ground rather than dig trenches. I took all of the shanks off of my chisel plow but one, attached the end of the coil with some 12 gauge fencing wire and a bolt and dragged the pipe behind me to each new irrigation box or connection point. You don't even have to replace the soil. Just drive your tractor or car over the slightly disturbed grass and you're done. I probably have a couple thousand feet of underground line on my farm and it took me very little time or money to install and it has lasted nearly 20 years with no damage. Good luck. Everything Is looking awesome , and i'm so excited for this project. That plot is going to be rocking in no time soon. I wish i could come volunteer while you are starting up to gain some more experience, this is going to be an awesome project. I am looking to get started farming also but i'm taking the more urban approach. My friends in Orlando Fl were vital in starting up the Fleet Farming program that is exploding right now and I want to bring it to Fort Lauderdale. I am so fired up right now i cant wait to get farming, and i just want to thank you Curtis and all of your friends for sharing so much valuable information. I have watched almost everyone of your videos and im about to pull the trigger on getting your book . Thank you again and I look forward to seeing more updates from unearthed farms and green city acres. Keep up the stellar work.
Curtis, I really enjoyed this. I am in Maine and on my heart, I have growing produce for area food cupboards. This video gave me ideas and a bit of a spark to go the next step in planning and meeting ones I need to see to get this started. Thanks. Blessings.
I recently told my grandfather that I want to get into farming and he suggested about 24 acres his father passed down to him .. I really want to utilise that sooner rather than later
Hi Dave here I'm an organic baker,, just for the knowing the Good Earth Organic Farm on Gabriola Island bc is up for sale,, an amazing scoup for a determined farmer, cheers Dave
Awesome tour and best of luck to Jordan's biz and new baby! I think the refer trailer is a great way to double up on both mobility and cold storage. I liked how Jordan is taking the bull by the horns and pressing his experience into bigger and better things...inspiring!...I will check our his web site...Liked!
I would love to see you go back to Unearthed Farm and see how they completed the setup of their office/walk-in cooler and pack space. Also, really interested in why he chose to block his beds as 9 x 50ft beds.
Love your content curtis. I'm right where this guy is, bought your book and love all your videos! You are truely inspiring man! This first year for me will be the real test of you way of running a spin farm. Keep up the great work my friend!
My first thought was wind, it looks very exposed from that perspective. Bearing in mind I'm in Southern Tasmania and we get very strong winds here in late winter early spring making season extension difficult.
who the hell downvotes this?!?!?! amazing work. I am 18 months into owning an 8 acre property (we live on it) in nor cal. I quit my job last year. I'm looking to get started.... thank you so much for this resource.
I'm have a full time 9-5 and got 2 acres to test my hands on farming. As I watch more of Curtis videos, it's becoming clearer that this has to be a full time Gig.
Good luck, Jordan! He seems like a high energy type of guy. It would be interesting to find out why those market gardeners who he bought the truck trailers from gave up farming.
Very in-sync to my current situation.. Watching your videos, reading your book.. I'll be starting my first market garden this year as well. It'll be part time to start off, got 5 acres of arable land, of which I'm planning to develop 1/4 acre. Since I'm in the prairies, the land won't be workable for a while, there's still snow here. Gotta wait till mid April to start roto-tilling the pasture that it is now. Anyways, I just felt excited to share that.. it's pretty much all because of your content that it got me thinking of doing this. If I ever need some coaching I'll also know who to contact! ;-) Thanks again for everything you put out man :-)
Curtis, have you listened to Jordan's interview with Steve Solomon? I think you would do well with his complete organic fertilizer now that you don't have a good compost source.
Great stuff! I love that you visit your friends and show us their work. (I just watched the mushroom video). I've got a directorial suggestion. :) When you're filming a shot that shows both you and your talking partner, then either look at your talking partner AND/OR treat the camera as your talking partner.. But don't stare into the distance :) Feel free to react to the conversation towards the camera, or ask a question while you are looking at the camera. It will feel awkward while recording, but it will look quite natural in the final result. It's actually easy to do if you just remember not to stare in the distance.. That leaves you with two other options and both are good. :) Love your vids!
Question about animals, Rabbits, deer, anything else and the fight keeping them out from destroying the farms? Fencing, covering everything ?? What is ideal way to keep them out?
Hey Curtis maybe I am missing something but when I go to your website looking to buy your book there is NO buy button for it. I am not sure how relevant it will be in AUstralia but you give out such great content I wanted to support you in someway and have a look at the resource you often refer to. Here in Killarney South east queensland we are gearing up for winter and I am madly organizing my standardized 30 " beds and homemade hoop house. Love hearing you riff on about the bigger picture of government control and interventionist policies keep up your great work. Regards Russell
For a five year lease I would leave nothing fallow. I would rotate crops as need be, Fallow doesn't enter into the equation until year seven. What am I missing? EDIT: Rotation can include tilling under a crop every 3rd year when that crop involves more than one harvest per year.
Hey Curtis so i'm at the point where i need a packing shed and i like this guys set up and like the idea that its movable only problem is i'm in hawaii. I was wondering if you have any idea how hot it gets in their during the summer months. My guess is that it'll get way to hot for down here and i'll just have to build a permanent structure on the leased land.
What do I need to do to turn my hay field into a garden?? A farmer has been on my property farming hay and I have not been using it and it's only a small section but now I want a garden and need it. How do I kill it so my garden can thrive?? New to this and not sure what to do and I can't seem to find anyone who has done this conversion!!
I'm glad to see young people actually excited about farming. It brings great joy to my heart and actually gives me hope for the American farmers. There is a lot to learn about farming and ranching and it can be very hard at times but the emotional rewards you get out of farming and ranching is like no other. Just one bit of advice too you. The people that work for you or the people that work "with you" are not staff members, they to are farmers or ranchers or in some cases they are hands but definitely not staff, you are not running a restaurant. Maybe some of the really big corporate spreads call their hands staff? but I'm not going to get into the corporate farm crap because that's what most of those operations are "Crap" ? Job title may seem like a very minuscule thing to bring up and talk about but it's not. It's very important to be on a equil playing field with all the other farmers. Paying attention to the little details is what separates good farmers from great farmers. I wish you all the best on your new farming indever. Take care. Hawk out !!
Greetings brother, thank you for sharing this video. I am in a similar position now, building my first season market garden. It is very insightful and motivating ;) I came across it whilst ordering tarps! I love your work if you would like to know how I am getting on here in the Czech Republic let me know I can share some materials later on in the season.
Then don't. The way we see it is that the land development is only a small part. Investment in your customer base, knowledge, experience, and social equity are far more important. The last 4 can be moved around a bit.

I can't ship outside of North America yet. Sorry about that.
I'd love to buy your book too. I live in Malta (but I'm from Queensland as well!). Do you have it available as an e-book?
You can buy the ebook. Download a kindle app or something similar onto phone.
There is also the audible book version available.
Thank you this was very helpful and informative 👍👍
awesome content
Nice spread!!! Wish we all had access to acreage like that.
Could Jordan share how he got the land?
He was shopping around. It was word of mouth.

this isn't urban farming you're just regular farming
Jordan never claimed to be an urban farming. This is market gardening.
He calls himself a market gardener a few times. I am wondering where the term comes from
