Can't tell you how useful it is to watch you work on the Vario ( and I can see its a big pain in the ASS!) . I have motorhome based on the LP 813 merc chassis and a lot of this is transferable . Excellent stuff ! Thanks for the clear explanations too .

Mel, when you're bouncing off the scaff bar, you should put a jack, or an axle stand, or a lump of wood under the end of the horizontal bar to support it, or you risk rounding the wheel nuts. ;)

Well done Mel, respect for your patience and stoicism. I spent too many miserable days under axles in my younger days grappling with brakes in the freezing rain/snow with skinned and bleeding knuckles cursing under my breath to even think about tackling that job now. Very happy to leave it to the professionals these days. Very informative video though.

Same here Kevin, I detest working on vehicles pretty much anytime now tbh.
I would be running back and forth, from the shed to the carpark, I can't leave tools out there, so I'd need to stick them into the van just to fetch another tool I didn't realise I'd need; then there's the rain to dodge 70% of the time.
I don't own another vehicle, so if I needed another tool or part, a trip to the auto parts shop would mean a long walk, a bus or taxi.
It cost me £165 yesterday at my local garage for some electrical work, two issues, one was just a bulb and the other issue was some wiring corrosion which was a 30 years of age related thing.
A new front brake pipe was also fitted.
I got my van back later that day, no messing about, MOT retest is this Wednesday.
I don't mind putting some food on the table for those guys, it took me four years to eventually find a garage I can trust and rely on, now that's the most difficult part in my opinion Kevin.

Sometimes I enjoy working on my vehicles sometimes I hate it, being in the freezing cold in the p*ssing down rain under a car with rust in my eyes and oil in my hair is not fun. Problem I have is garages are overpriced and I can't trust the monkeys who have their hands on my pride and joys so I just have to grin an bare it take my time and do it myself.

Mel, looks a nice clean van, my brothers camper was an 814, where he raised the back of the roof , to allow stairs to a bedroom, and in front some decking to sit out on...looked really cool, but cant show a picture here..we both have latest model Iveco Daily High roof Lwb, 3ltr High8 autos now converted to campers, not so cool to look at , but fuel consumption full timming around Europe has less impact on the wallet..🤣

  • @nobbyclarkster
    @nobbyclarkster 8 місяців тому +2

Mel, you need to get yourself a torque multiplier. I had this when I 1st moved onto the 6.5t+ vans. It’s come in handy time after time even when the windy gun and impact drivers have been defeated.
Also invest in 1 inch drive socket sets, they cope with the bigger nuts and bolts far better, and less likely to bend when jumping on them!

A great video Mel, well done. Your previous mechanics experience came in handy on that job. You could do with an impact gun and compressor for the shed, it would have made it a bit easier to free up those tight bolts, and since you appear to be in a place where old varios come for a second chance of life, everybody could make use of it. The restoration of this van will make a superb video series, and will be a good educational video for those that come after you. I love mechanical info, and you've done a great job of explaining both the problems and the solutions. Well done.👋

That doesn't work on a wheel that can rotate, it also seriously overloads the tool, potentially firing bits of broken tool across the workshop.
Provided it's insured it can be driven to a pre-booked appointment with someone that's got a heavy-duty impact wrench, alternatively, call out a lorry tyre fitter.

On the point you made of mots on vehicles like yours not done it's the same for agricultural vehicles like tractors and they use them for towing trailers carrying crops that can weigh around 20 tons on public roads and I do believe this to be wrong.

Vehicles that do not need an MOT
      Exempt vehicles
Other vehicles that do not need an MOT include:
goods vehicles powered by electricity and registered before 1 March 2015
      tractors
      some historic (‘classic’) vehicles
A list of exempt types of vehicles is on the MOT exemption form (V112). You need to fill in the form if your vehicle is listed so that you can either tax it or apply for tax exemption.
