Mel, the spare wheel should raise the other way up, dish up. A chassis cross member with 2 wheel bolts welded onto it facing down at the appropriate spacing will then allow you to locate the wheel, and 2 wheel nuts can then be used to screw onto the wheel bolts and tightened up to securely fasten the spare. Used to be a truck driver, and the winding rope only needs to be strong enough to get the wheel up there, the bolts and nuts take it up the last bit and secure. The wheel will lift more stably up the other way. Try it with your winch to prove it !!😊
Put the wheel flat under the van hub, use a big block of wood between van and tyre let van down on jack slowly to compress the block of wood against the tyre wall.
Result, one ton plus bead breaker!
Hope that helps.
👍🇬🇧
Brilliant idea 👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld or use a bottle jack to break the bead between the frame and the tire no need to drop the whole van
That seems a lot more trouble than it's worth 😊
I am a retired commercial tyre fitter and your efforts on changing a tyre gave me such a laugh .Such on easy job to do but we all have to learn
Thank you I’m going to crack it one day 😂👍
We always changed our own tyres on cars & vans back in the day .... Fairy-Liquid .. a couple of big spanners (Tyre Levers) and a quick reverse over the bead to break it ... Easy to fit new tyre and inflate it with the old cans of 'Easy-Fill Foam' - Or if a mate was handy to bounce the wheel, a foot pump would do it 🤠 .... (Usually about 10 - 15 mins)
That floor has been layed more times than my ex Mrs :)
You picked her 🤣😂👍
Lol
😂😂
Hi Mel, pleasure talking to you the other day. Good luck with the Merc, worth taking a tip from tranny wheel holder and putting the retaining bolts through the stud holes in the wheel!
hi Mel, good job on taking the tyre off the rim, I never have a wheel under the van because the weather ruins the wheel and possibly the chains, I have put my spare wheel in the van under my fixed bed, no hate just seems a lot of chew on specially trying to get the wheel back up in wet weather
Flip the wheel over. You would have more clearance. Make a cross to pull the wheel up. Weld 4 wheel stud bolts to it - appropriately spaced to align with the"face"of the wheel hub holes (balance solved). A steel cable (not rope) is sleeved through the center of the cross, (cross has a disc center with hole). The cable has a looped end and passes through the disc hole. On the underside of the hub, which is exposed, a conventional padlock is used to both secure the cross to the cable and too prevent wheel theft. Lower the tire and tilt to unlock the padlock and therefore release the "cross". Pull the van forward and roll the wheel out. Yes, even with a flat.
That’s brilliant thank you 👍🍻
Gonna be a right faff if you ever have to change the wheel, it just seems over complicated.
OMG Mel that was so painful watching you remove that tyre. As a younger man I used to work for ATS as a commercial fitter. I always used a proper bead breaker and 3 leavers. If shown properly you will do it in about 5 minutes. Its still a proper work out but good fun. Have to admire your determination tho! 😁
Thank you I’ve done 3 now only 3 more to do 😂👍
It would be cheaper just to buy the original pulley and spacer for the spare
MEL to break the bead get some angle iron about 100 mm long. At least 50 × 50 nice and clean rounded corners. Put on tyre and hit with your lump hammer
Great 👍
We used to do 4x4 tyres in the field by using a block of wood and lowering the axle down on the tyre, or if you were feeling lazy get someone else to drive over the tyre on the floor 😂
You need a TL bar and a lump hammer to break the bead Mel and take smaller bites with the levers.
How I used to break the bead was with a long pole wedged under something solid and a wooden block .put block by the bead pole goes over the block and push down on the end of the pole thus break in the bead and put the irons in each side the vale
Way over complicated MEL IMO. Keep the rope and pulley use a piece of 20mm threaded bar in the center bolted to cross member, metal disc (better if you can dish it) on road facing side of wheel, 20mm nut with 2 lugs welded on to tighten. Way more secure and wont rattle. Great vid m8 really enjoyed watching you struggle with the tyre 😜
Just a suggestion you could use 5mm steel wire instead of the rope like a old Toyota Hilux👍👍👍👏👏👏
I applaud your enthusiasm, Mel. Great video again.
Get a piece of angle iron for next time, place it between the bead and rim then give it a tap with the sledge and the bead will break nicely 👌
Always good to learn new skills, well done 👍
little bit of safety wire on the shackle pins, till they've frosted over the galvinised just in case they vibrate orf. I was impressed you got the tyre off, I gave up on my mobike tyre and got the garage to do it. Big G clamp and a couple of planks to unbead the tyre from the rim maybe would help, I don't have as good aim with the slegehammer myself either, more likely to take my shin out. Fun video, the you tube guys are usually promoting the tools for the so easy to do yourself jobs.
Use a spare wheel carrier on the back of the van, looks good too.
Hi Mel
You need to start and finish the tyre removal from the valve side of the tyre
As the other guy said two pieces of angle iron work very well for breaking the beads
Hope this helps
you made that look easy
I made a box from a leaf spring top and bottom and 2 heavy threaded bars. a bottle jack inside is a handy press. Maybe you could make something similar to squash the tyres down for removal....
Well done mell it's a tough job doing a tyre change. Nice job on the wheel hanger. 👍 now sit back and have a 🍺
Thanks 👍
A crowbar is a lot thicker so lot easier to get them off than those thin bars
Hi Mel, Keeps being an really awesome project, must have had luck finding the truck didn’t you? I wonder about the rope you used, often this type stretches out over time but perhaps you was ahead of this with a non stretching type of rope. Anyway great episode ones again! Here’s Albert
Thank you 🙏
Bless you it’s great you have it all you had to remove the tyre. Hope your hand was ok 😊
Yes, thank you
If you go to an Isuzu truck dealer they sell a spare wheel chain winch which goes on an Isuzu NPN200-250, not expensive and much safer and simpler. Your method looks ok but will be a nightmare when you get your first puncture, Murphys law you will. And as others have commented the wheel should be the other way up, a) so you don't remove all the paint when sliding under and b) so the well doesn't fill up with crap over time, the edge of the tyre will also sit on the upper supports giving no need for extra chains and turnbuckles etc.
I've used a jigger pick before to break the bead.
If you used the tyre irons from the inside instead of the other side and use the same process of letting the bead fall into the well of the wheel you should be able to remove with less effort.
Thank you that makes perfect sense I still have 3 more to do so I still have plenty to practice on 😂👍🍻
Its coming together
That spare wheel set up is nowhere near strong enough. Those turnbuckle bodies are only cast monkey metal, they’ll break in no time. The supporting ribs aren’t thick enough, and the stowed wheel should be absolutely rock solid, not moving like that. It’ll be noisy as hell too. If you turn the wheel the other way up you’ll gain ground clearance. Just weld some studs to a proper bit of flat bar and bolt the wheel up like it’s designed to be.
There no cast they are stainless steel
Breaking the bead is the biggest problem. I use a lump hammer and a brick bolster to drive round the rim and tyre to slowly push the bead down till it goes below the lip. Dilute washing up liquid is your friend. Also using a trolley jack on the tyre to push against the rim whilst the wheel is trapped under the vehicle t may work. The longer the tyre lever the better and get the tyre as deep into the mid section as much as possible . A good pair of gloves to protect your knuckles is a good investment.
Great video. Men! There is no way I would have pulled that birds nest out with my naked hands! Solid mechanical problem solving, as usual.
Hi Mel , Just a thought , if you are having a garage/storage space at the back of the van like you have in the merc , how about making a hatch in the floor to help with access for the spare wheel , also how about making an X to help with lifting the wheel to stop it tilting side to side , or to make things a lot easier as you have enough space just fit a spare wheel carrier inside the van in the garage area, I am just getting the end of your video with the turn buckle that seems a lot of pissing about to change a wheel
Tired just watching you toll with that tyre Mel . Top job
Great work I just get frustrated your on your own doing it , but I’m the worlds worst for not asking for help . My buddy had a mouse living in his head lamp and traveled to work with him everyday 😂😂 I often worried about the mouse , what if he got out for a pee and my buddy drove away 😂😂 well done good luck Mel 👍👍👍🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🦢
Good effort Mel. I would have been tempted to put a block of wood on that tyre and then push it under the wheel axle and lower the whole weight of the bloody van on it ! lol
Mel ,I use a piece of angle iron about 4 to 5 inch long and a sledge hammer to break my beeds works a treat. The spare wheel not sure about it ,may not pass an inspection. How do they normally do it ,or could you not attach it to the rear doors like you did your sprinter.
Such a hassle to go through all of that.Just go to a tyre place and getthe wheels and tyres done. Also some other people on here have commented on better ways to mount and fix your spare wheel which will be better than the way you have it at the moment.Anyway enjoyable vid.Look forward to the next one.
Mel instead of all that faff with chains why not use the safety chain with a threaded rod at the bottom thru the lifting bar and use a nut and washer to secure the wheel.
Mel get a bit of angle iron around 6inch long and a sledge hammer to break them beads , that’s how I do it I’m a mobile lorry tyre fitter
Maybe weld another piece of metal on with a bolt so it’s an x and then wheel 100% won’t tip as it rises with three bolts thru hub. Great video as usual. 👍🚐
Another ace video Mel 👍
Thanks again!
@@BigVanSmallWorld 👍👍👍
Bloody hell mel I was worn out just watching the video well done though
Mel, how about replacing the central hanging chain with a piece of threaded rod then putting the clamp back onto the ladder clamp that you are using and tighten it up it would then be a solid mechanical fixing, all the best mate and keep up the good work 😊
Mel, you should take the tyre off from the other side of the rim you will find it much easier
What me and my dad normally does with tyres that we can't get off is put a piece of wood on the tyre and then get another vehicle and drive up on the wood which of course breaks the bead I'm not suggesting anybody else does this I am just telling you what we do.
Good luck getting the new tyres on the other rims . Having changed a wheel on a VanHool bus , I don't envy your job at all Mel
Robin's nest they love motorhomes
Mel cut the tyre with the grinder,
My tyre shop give free coffee and wifi. Seems a lot less like hard work :D
When I use to change tyres on my enduro bikes. I always used 3 tyre irons. Just a thought. How are you going to balance your new tyres
Heath Robinson comes to mind
Have you though about using a ute system to lift the sparewheel
Bit of heavy angle iron would help you break the bead.
1. Join the RAC , and have them change a flat tyre.
2. Teach Rebecca to change a flat tyre.
3. Put the spare on the roof or back doors.
4. Mount the spare to the front bumper and grille
5. Make a special place for inside van for the spare wheel.
6. Buy a couple of cans of instant quick puncture repair and a decent air pump.
You're see a theme here Mel....... Have a spare tank of some sort in the 'spare wheel ' area, or a secret storage spot for your krugerrands and pieces of eight Respectfully Mel, there's gotta be abetter way! ....
Hi Mel, I don't see burning scrap offcuts of wood as being unfriendly to the environment. I would say it is making good use of earth's resources. What else are you supposed to do to keep warm? Burn LPG? Burn diesel? Both would be using up precious resources.
Great point!👍
I’m sure you’d love to try out tyre soap - but let me say that IF you do - you’ll be sleeping in the van on your own 😂 xx
Hahah
That looked like a lot of hard work! I took the old tyres off of my vans rims - I ended up cutting them off! I have the same issue as you breaking the bead. Did you consider using a drop down basket with a hinge on one side for your spare tyre? I have seen some with rollers so that it’s nice and easy to get the tyre on and off the basket
A Robin’s nest 🪹 I’m guessing as they like to nest low down
Hi mate get thick peace off anglin 2 inch put on rim off tyre give belt with sledge hammer brake bead easy take core out of valve the way you took tyre off is the right way it will not come off other way I repair my truck tyres all the time
Blimey!
Hell of a lot of hard work with the tyre, should have taken it to kwikfit, would have that off in 5mins, a new tyre fitted in 10,.
Thay told me that they can’t do them lol 😂
Don't forget to spray the rims before you put the tyres on
A short piece of angle iron and a large hammer to break the bead... 👍
Good 1st effort dude. 😉
Thanks 😁
Good effort. Did you consider fabricating a hinged wire tyre rack and using a hook on the rope to wind it up.
will you be balancing new tyres also !!!! LOL then i will be impressed. lovin your work mel....
Gotta love a cunning plan Baldric lol
Find new place for spare it will take you ages to get it from under there in rain and snow with a puncture I have been there also will corrode no matter how you protect it
Madam whiplash is wanting a price off you to rechain her dungeon 😂😂😂
I would say a large G clamp with blocks of wood and your impact gun to clamp and break bead..
The original spare wheel carrier for under the vario cost like nothing, or you bend them from a peace of iron u use in concrete. Why always make it so difficult?
For the video silly
Hi Mel, I was wondering - what is the load length on your vario? Thanks 👍
I’d fit the spare inside the van it’s big enough.
Good job they're not run flats Mel.... you'd never get them off....or on...
Spare on back door?
Would probably be a lot better and a lot safer with a strong ratchet strap instead of the chains
Ide make sure it's all greased up that chain and tensioner imagine after a few years under there being all rusty imagine changing that side of the road and all being seized!!!?!?!
Yeah I may just change it for the right one when I can find one 👍
Rent free I suspect
..Looks like the wrong tyre levers ..tyre lever bar has a slight s shape, other bar is a spoon bar . ideally need a bead slide hammer ,a bead blaster and a core remover 😂
Have seen them torch hats in the services Mel, are they any good? Might use me BP points to get one lol
Yes 👍
Ostrich nesting in your Vario Mel ?
Hahaha 🤣
Just fit the wheel to the back door mel 😂
Nope
Personally I would have had a wheel holder on the back door, less hassle.
We don’t want that
all the tyres are probably end of life all that work on aged tyres one blow out could write the van off
Why did not put it on your back door ????
Because I didn’t want to 😁👍
ROBIN Nest
Supprised you didn’t just cut the old tyre off with a grinder….
That was painful to watch, the wheel was never going to balance and the tyre removal was easy made to look hard.
Wren
There must be a UA-cam video of a better method to get the tyre of the bead
I’m still learning and I found one this morning that used a different method I’ll try it later today as I still have 3 more to do i have plenty more to practice on 😂👍
That looks tyring mel
No way would I even think about changing that tire
Just cut the tyre off?? The spare tyre system in these vans looks like an oversight? What a palaver.
That effort can not have been worth it to save the small cost of getting the tyre changed by the tyre seller.
It’s not about the money it’s about the challenge of being able to do it yourself plus entertainment for you 😂👍
£30 well spent.. 😂😂
