    I remember this well. I worked Master Control for KHQ in the late 80's. I use to run this sign-off every night. I showed it to my kids. They didn't know that TV stations use to turn off at night.

      I miss the days before the 24 hrs news cycle. This sign off is one I remember fondly.

    I love the sign-off messages and would rather see stations off-air for a few hours rather than populate their entire overnight block with infomercials. How extensive these sign-offs are vary from station to station but KHQ's was a bit more elaborate and even classy.

    I found who the actor is before the sign off. That's William Sampson. He died a year after this sign off.

    The film of "The Navy Hymn," as seen here prior to the sign-off, is the same one that was used for years on Los Angeles station KNBC Channel 4's sign-offs.

    • @Hogstuff
      @Hogstuff 7 років тому +2

      KNBC used a slightly different Navy Hymn clip. If you compared them side-by-side, you can see that KNBC's version has a different ending shot.

      @@HogstuffYes, that one had a sunset with a zoom-out at the end. Kind of reminded me of a postcard.

    @IkegamiHK312 The slide apperars just before the color bars appear, so I think that the "trouble incomming" is the color bars.

    @wmbrown6: Now that's bringing back some LA memories! There's loads of KABC sign-offs on here if you dig around a bit.

    @Childist2 Most likely an automatic "trouble slide" from the cable company in case of signal loss.

    I Think The KHQ Sign Off Message and Film before the SSB was recycled somewhere between Early 1980's (Before 1985/Before when they changed their logo because of 3:33).

    One station here in LA used the Navy Hymn. But not the video version used here.
