    Growing up in Troy, ny we had 10 of us kids so we always had to get single family homes to rent, & my mother moved Al the time as our family grew. One house we moved in had a collapsed carriage house which this explorer could not resist. I found an old woman’s diary, in the early century penmanship. I sold it to my older brother for a quarter, how I wish I still had it. I explored an abandoned mansion down the street, it was open & I went in through the basement & up to the first floor. It had a beautiful curved staircase, wow. After we left there, we moved a few blocks up into an abandoned huge mansion & were allowed on only one floor until we found a more permanent home. It was all original,nothing had been changed, omg, it was out of this world gorgeous with every feature you could ask for in a historic mansion, curved alcoves, mighty foyer & staircase. Window seats in both. Huge fireplaces, ever since then, I was an adolescent 13 year old, I said, I will own one, one day. We had to depend on welfare & surplus because the sperm donor abandoned us, but I never gave up hope for it, .& finally at age 68, I managed to find my mansion in a small 8500 population town, a fixer upper to be sure, but it has the basic features I longed for. I am 70 now, retired, & the economy has hit me too, but the women in my family have longevity to 94ish, I am pretty healthy so I’m praying Kamala wins & things on that front get returned to pre-republican financial collapses 1980’s-today. Then I will jump into it. I cannot wait. I’m picking away at things. But what I originally was getting at, I hope someone goes through those out buildings to scavenge any historic bits & pieces before clearing them out.

      Agree, but bringing it up to code will be costly. There's so much to consider & do before the electric, plumbing & heating can even be installed. Still, maybe some lovely person with lots of money will take it on. I think it's worth saving too :)

    Many vintage houses in worse condition than this one have been restored to their original, historic beauty and back to being lovely, up-to-date homes. That being said, though, I also understand an area's real estate values must be sufficient to absorb the cost of such a restoration without the owner going 'upside down.' I'd be curious to know if the narrator's feelings about this gem are a reflection of an opinion that local values are not high enough. Well, anyway, I hope this 'diamond in the rough' is discovered by a new owner who sees the potential, loves the historic nature, and is willing to tackle the project.

      You would likely need a demo permit from the town who would also put you on a clock. The courts might also put you on a short leash because its a known hazard on your property. A contractor would need to meet a series of liability, insurance, hazardous material and worksite protocols. You could do it yourself with fewer rules, but its quite dangerous if you don't know what you are doing and you would still likely have to follow town rules. Fines for a hazard on your property can be enormous because every day is another fine.

    It's a mess, but still a beautiful & intriguing home. Hope someone saves it. And yes, getting insurance while working on the property will be difficult with those falling outbuildings. But, find out if the local fire department will allow & monitor a series of controlled burns. If so, bulldoze the outbuildings & let 'em go.🔥 It might save the buyer significant haul-away costs. Or, offer the remnants to barnwood buyers & let them take it.

    As old as the house is there really aren't any historical details to the house, aside from the wide plank floor boards, that make it worth saving. It's pretty basic. Is it worth a renovation? Probably not...sadly.

    • @ForeclosureFinder
      @ForeclosureFinder  10 місяців тому

      You could renovate it but based on the area we do think the best option would be new construction to take advantage of the lot.

    • @mugwump242
      @mugwump242 10 місяців тому +2

      What's truly sad is how commonly and often those who don't know US architectural history consider a structure devoid of worthy historical details because its style is subtle and was executed with a light touch (and, as a result, wrongheadedly 'green-light' its demolition). The Greek Revival architectural style (e.g., the house in this video) can be one of those subtle ones. It should be remembered that lack of flamboyance doesn't necessarily equate to a lack of potential historical significance. Cheers!

      @@ForeclosureFinder If you look, I suspect you will find a prominent citizen of the area built this house. Once the front doorway is restored, and some of the trim is replaced over the windows, this will be a very imposing facade. (I wouldn't be surprised if the original section of the house was built in Federalist/early Greek Revival times - maybe 1810 to 1830.
      It looks like the front door was taken out when the Victorian porch was put on, and the main entrance changed to the side of the house. I say this because the far right window on the front - towards the road - looks a little smaller than the other two windows for the ground floor. Also, this type of house always had a front entry hall. Probably a hall stairway was also taken out.
      I think an architect could come up with some nice solutions for this house. Restore the facade, the front hall, and the front room and dining room, and go crazy with modernizing the space further back(the room that enters from the second Victorian porch): a wonderfully open kitchen and family space for the way people live today. That way you can respect the integrity of the original house while adapting it to modern usage. (The second addition that looks like it was for fire wood storage could even be taken down without hurting the house's integrity. )
      I suspect you could find a semi-local company that deals in used barn board and hand-hewn beams that is insured, and maybe even bonded, to salvage and clean up the fallen barns and farm buildings. Put that $75,000 you were talking about into the house.
      Put in a little landscaping to set the house apart and you would have a show piece!
      Please consider giving this house a more considerate and creative treatment. This is not your everyday, run of the mill distressed property. I think you would find there will be people of a more refined sensibility who would find it very attractive. That way everyone would be happy.

    A very annoying speaker - I had to shut him off so I could enjoy the house without him ripping everything to bits. Apart from the leaking roof & deck missing floorboards, I could see this being a great house after a lot of painting, fixing & removing cobwebs! We had an old house in CT very much like this. Around the same era, not quite that dilapidated, but I enjoyed the feeling of history living there! The old bath fittings can be charming, not everybody wants or needs ultra modern everything! The worst is the huge amount of old wood in the garden. That's enough firewood for a lifetime, but better to have it all taken away I think!

  • @lyndaproper1313
    @lyndaproper1313 10 місяців тому +2

    I was so sad to hear the lack of respect for and knowledge of old buildings. Even in dollar terms, do you have any idea of how much hand hewn beams cost when you buy them salvaged? But I guess that's good because someone who appreciates this sort of thing can probably get a really good deal because of your low-ball evaluation.
    BTW - A "colonial" house was never built in 1860! A colonial house would have been built around colonial times - up to and around the American Revolution. Then, after the Revolution and up until about 1830, Federalist style was built. After that, about 183x -1850 Greek Revival houses were the fashion. After that, you get stick houses and other Victorian styles during the Victorian period of history.
    AND - What happened to this place? Essentially, grandpa died and grandma could not keep up with the place, This, in conjunction with, the sons who might have taken over the farm, going west and/or going to war, and never returning. More recently, it looks like someone had high hopes for making the house back into a nice place to live, but didn't have the resources to get the job done. The farm way of life was no longer viable, so barns and storage houses and workshops were no longer needed. Not such an unusual story, after all.

    • @mugwump242
      @mugwump242 10 місяців тому +1

      Yes! None too soon, someone who actually has some real knowledge of US architectural history chimes in. Thank you! In accord with what you said, the initial (two-story) portion of this house is Greek Revival with a front porch that was later added or rebuilt along more Victorian lines (turned posts and fretwork corner brackets). The "stair-stepping" expansion units look like they were finished in keeping with the Greek Revival style. It seems like the narrating realtor might not have much knowledge about, or interest in, historic properties. His priorities, admittedly, lie elsewhere. In another thread in this comment section, he replied that he leans toward demolition and exploitation of this large lot for new development.

    Bull doze this house?? This is a historic house that can be restored by the right owner. It doesn’t appear that you know enough about houses to narrate the findings of some of these houses. This house was built during slavery. It would be interesting to know how many owners have been there since 1860. It probably is a modern plantation home. The dilapidated structures on the side, one being a possible old barn with a few old slave houses. If this is true, the historians need to be called in to verify. There could be old artifacts underneath the pile to name a few also a cemetery through the woods which was common practice back then. Some parts of the house was significantly updated showing part of the house could have been rented out. It’s a wonderful house with a fireplace in the cellar. If turned into a museum of some sort, it could generate money. There are still a few states that still have standing slave houses. Please do appropriate research.
