Fun fact, Harry Secombe didn't want to take Oliver by the ear - he just wanted to grab him by the scruff of his neck but the director was insistent.... so on the first take, Mark Lester had a joke ear which came off in Harry Secombe's hand.... apparently he screamed in horror as Oliver laughed :D
Such a brilliantly done precision executed performance. In this particular show they added such added details to the overall story that you just do not see in other productions. For instance- the boys pulling straws to see who will go ask for more. Just excellent all the way through
The custodian helmet is the headgear traditionally worn by male police constables and sergeants while on foot patrol in England and Wales. Officers of all ranks in most forces are also issued a flat, peaked cap that is worn on mobile patrol in a vehicle. Ranks above sergeant wear the peaked cap only. However, some Inspectors wear the Custodian Helmet, but with two silver bands around the base (to match the two pips worn as rank insignia) to denote their position. Claimed by some sources to have been based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army, it was first adopted by the London Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the "stovepipe" top hat worn since 1829. In 1863, the Metropolitan Police replaced the previous uniform of white trousers, swallow-tailed coat and top hat in favour of very dark blue trousers, a more modern button up tunic and the early type of helmet which had an upturned brim at the front and a raised spine at the back, running from the bottom to the top of the helmet, which became known as the "cockscomb.
The sad thing is Scrooge until he repented supported the workhouses and even said if the poor are to die then they better do so and decrease the surplus population
It sure was tough on a child back then who lost their parents or they were simply abandoned. It was a dog-eat-dog type of living trying to survive. Heaven help you if you were caught stealing. I'm even willing to bet all those boys who drew straws to see who would be the unlucky one to go up snd ask for seconds had all met up earlier (except for Oliver, of course).and planned the whole thing. Less kids left equaled more "food," (if you could call that watery slop that that they were served food) for everyone else.
I was entranced by this film when it came out. I am the same age as Mark Lester and was in his fan club. He had a meet the fans day and he kissed me on the cheek. Oh innocent days of our youth. I remember being shocked at the harshness and brutality of Victorian life.
This workhouse isn't fair. Those kids aren't treated right by the grown ups, the grown ups don't give them enough food, and they don't give them that delicious food that they eat in that smaller room, which shows that the grown ups aren't poor and they CAN afford good food, they're just mean to the kids. And, it's not as if Oliver asked rudely for more food like a brat, he said please. But since he wasn't the only kid who was very hungry, I think he should have asked, "Please sir, may we have some more because we're still hungry." And said MAY we have some more, not we WANT some more." On the contrary, it's the grown ups who are the brats.
The worldview of these men is very different from ours. As far as they and most of the society of the time are concerned they are already doing the kids a massive favour by not letting them die on the streets. You see, a modern man makes social judgements with the starting position that all humans are equal and have certain rights. However society of 1830s england starts with opposing assumptions. For them all human beings are born UNEQUAL and have no rights save the ones the law and their betters choose to bestow upon them. Any notion of inherent rights would have sounded ridiculous to them. And these children are most definitely inferior due to their own misfortune, ill breeding and useless families. The state is under no obligation t take care of them using resources produced by proper citizens. They do so out of pity, charity and this is already more than they deserve. When you throw a starving dog a bone you dont really give a fuck if it tastes good now do you? THAT is how people of the time thought and THATis how they acted.
@@nikosgreek352 What changed? Why suddenly did people start caring? Like what part of society woke up and went “hey this is wrong” when for so long it went on and no one cared at the time?
@@deanwinchester3356 They didnt. Wealth creation in england simply grew to the point that people could afford to share more and more. This in turn caused a slow change in attitudes and moral perceptions. Combine this with political and social upheaval and you have a slow transition toward the current way of thought. Now will this last? Maybe. Maybe not.
@@nikosgreek352 Logical fallacy. Just because THEY didn't think it was wrong doesn't mean it's not wrong. They're still wrong. Don't starve children, unless you outright just don't care.

They’ll probably remake it with some rapper playing Fagin with hip hop versions of the songs and a female Oliver/Artful Dodger
