    Broken bolts, I officially hate them. :) How about you!?

    • @russellgiles1531
      @russellgiles1531 2 роки тому +2

      Even worse when you are reassembling as you have to take everything back off to deal with it 🤬 when tapping or cleaning out a thread I'd suggest one full full turn in and then back it out half a turn and repeat, clears the bits you've collected in the tap 👍

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  2 роки тому

      @@russellgiles1531 Yeah, a real pain mate, should have done it proper from the start. I tried as you say take it slowly and but by bit, even took the tap out and cleaned it every time. Just glad I got it sorted before the rack was mounted. 🤣 Would have been the end of the roof rack story, used it for scraps instead. 🍻

    I know the pain of broken bolts! I always break them I have got too much energy and do not know where to stop! But working late at night definitely fog your brain. Always make silly mistake. Always make it worse than before! ---> I have replaced Parking brake shoe on my Defender but As I was adjusting shoe, I have tighten that adjusting bolt too much and I heard a ping = I assume I have broken those shoe adjusting blocks. Also When I was installing New shoe I have damaged one pulling cable, one strand got damaged. I put them all back and it works fine. But I have created new job for the future Replacing new parking brake cable and new adjuster assembly,,,,,,,, Never ends!

      Hey and thank you! :) Glad I had a bit of experience from broken bolts before as it made it a bit easier to just get started and get the job done. I figured I can't worry about everything that can fail on a Land Rover, would't have time for anything else. 😆 But I do take the time to do some checks an pre-failure work and hopefully that will keep it running and dry. 👍 I feel your pain, nothing like the feeling when you just realise that it broke...

    Hi did you get this rack at Amazon? Thanks

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  11 місяців тому

      Hey. No it’s was bought straight from the make or the roof rack, ProSpeed UK. The freight cost was expensive since it was a complete unit but I think the have made them modular now so they offer cheaper freight. 😊 Still have it on the car and it’s great. Nothing negative to say so far. 👍

    I have just done exactly the same thing!! I wish I’d seen this video first. I’m going to have to tap out the broken screw too. Can I ask what size tap you used to create the new thread? Thanks

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  Рік тому

      Hehe, sorry to hear that and feel your pain. 😅 Can I ask which bolt whole it was? On mine it varied quit a lot from whole to whole how bad it was. I don't remember the size, I measured the bolts against the tap to find the correct one, also getting the threading pattern right. I have a set that has two sets of thread patters, the width of the thread. - So I went for the same size as the bolts and did not go bigger and use bigger bolt, just a lot of thread lock. 😊 Just guessing here at my computer I would think they were 6mm bolts. Hope it helps! Best, Simon.

    Did you know the bolt that broke off is a wasy fix , if you scrape away the orange putty you will find that there another bolt head that can be screwed out and you can buy a whole new double screwed in bolt with out spending all day trying to get out a broke off bolt but only question is can you still but this part

  • @snorris89

    Broke a bolt in exactly the same way as you when I was fitting my roof rails. Fortunately I had a friendly drilling subcontractor who had a full workshop round the corner and had the bolt removal tools to hand. I now have the tools to do it myself after that.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  Рік тому

      Hehe, that feeling though 😬😫 Glad you got it sorted. 👍 I would set a good bet on that the tools will come in handy later. 😂 I was just glad I had done it once or twice before because there was no hesitation this time, a few minutes of ranting, but then just straight into it. If I hadn’t done it before I guess I would have been to scared to do it my self in the roof. 😅

      Same happened to me. I replaced the ones that didnt break with stainless steel ones from Ace Hardware. I have been lazy on the broken one and its still in the hole with no head on it. I think I can drill it out with my extractor tool. This weekends job as well as cutting and fitting the trim pieces.

    The pain of a bolt snapping is the worse, I had a Austin metro many moons ago (rubbish car) and the engine mounting bolt snapped, so brother had to take engine out to sort it our what a pain.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  2 роки тому

      Haha, I can imagine, would be a body off with the Discovery. Got to be honest with you mate, I had to google the Austin Metro, but I bet it was a fun little car to drive. I find there is a different kind of charm in every car. 👍😊 Had a VW Golf 3 1.8gl station wagon as my first car, charm in that one as well. Me and my wife went on our first road trip with it, 1200km in a weekend and the alternator broke halted way. Will always remember that. 🤙😊 Cheers 🍻

    I feel dumb for asking this, but i haven't seen anyone ask this yet. Why do you have to remove the existing trim piece that's in the channel? If you have to use the front piece for the extended set, which I have, why can't you just remove the plastic pins then bolt it in? It doesn't appear the roof rails go inside the channel, but float on top due to the spacers being installed.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  2 роки тому

      No question is dumb, there is only dumb answers. 😉 The rails sits a bit down into the channel so the channel covers need to be removed. Probably a good thing too, as I got to clean it out. Don't think to many does this if they don't have to. 😁

      Thanks!
      I did go ahead and do that last night, pulled them all up and cut to size, and installed the extended version of the racks, I have the HSE package but it didn't even have the standard rails but my older 3 did, but it was the Heavy Duty package, wonder if that was why. It was gross, but mostly towards the windshield where dirt and 12 years worth of bug guts were packed in tight!
      I'll need to go buy a stripped screw/bolt removal kit as one hole didn't align yesterday even with the others loosened and eventually the last hole towards the back stripped and got stuck. But it does look a lot better! Throwing this whole thing on as I got rid of my little cargo trailer and am heading back to Colorado tomorrow from the east coast, will check out the wind noise soon.

    Hate to say but watching people that end up breaking bolt off on roof not good but I've seen this happen a few times on mounting roof rack this tells me 2 things run a tap in hole, lube hole and use grade 8 bolt thanks for validating what best to do before mounting bolts that come in kit don't use them on other you tuber had same issue with front runner rack use grade 8 bolt only to void any issues

      Hey and sorry for the late reply, read your comment 3 weeks ago but forgot to answer. Great tip to use proper bolts. I will have to get back to ProSpeed and hear what type of bolts they have sent. :) Will definitely take that into account next time I get a bolt kit from someone. Thanks for watching and commenting. If you go to you tuber , in his track , and watch the viedo installation of front runner and rear ladder you see what I am talking how to remove the putty in broke roof bolt its a 2 bolt roof bolt and just buy or put in a vise to help brace as you get out broken bolt or just buy a new 2 in one roof bolt

      @1251sparky no sure what trouble you are having but I will try and know when installation of any roof rack you should run a tap through it and if front runner rack what I did when I say he snap off front runner roof bolts I when out and bought stainless steel stronget bolts as I stated before its the little details that get you. And probably use some anti- seize I'm about to install a defender storage box on passenger side and defender ladder on driver side I'm going to have to drill into roof and install Rivet Nut insert it won't work with my front runner ladder and I will need drill into body and install 2 Rivet Nut insert and way I find the link now
