  • For the latest Volvo XC40 Recharge pricing and information:
    www.kbb.com/volvo/xc40-recharge/
    While this may look like a run-of-the-mill Volvo XC40, or should I say run-by-the-mill XC40, it’s not.
This is the all-electric XC40 Recharge.
For the next couple of minutes, we’re just going to talk about the new powertrain, so if you’re looking for a full review of the excellent combustion engine XC40, then check out our full review here.
This electric XC40 rides on the same platform as the gas-powered mini-ute, but that’s because it was initially designed to accommodate an EV version. Engine options our, two motors and a battery in.
The results on the engine to motor swap are tangible.
Acceleration times are quick. 0-60 takes about 4.7 seconds. That’s not a lot of time for a small hauler like this one.
You can thank that time for the Recharge’s power. 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque respectively, which of course, because this is electric, is instant. Yummy.
The second bonus is the way that substantial power is put down by all four wheels.
Where in the gas-powered models the XC40 experienced some tire spin, and perhaps even some torque steer, this Recharge version sees none of that. It’s just true power being put down when and where you want it.
The XC40 Recharge’s balance doesn’t feel thrown off for the new motor configuration. It gets real-life one-pedal braking, which you can disable if you prefer, which I actually do, and cargo space hasn’t been greatly compromised either. Hey, look, there’s a little frunk.
Some spots that might leave you a bit blanched include its price. The premium for the Recharge is steep, to the tune of a $55,000 base price.
The other drawback is its range, in that it’s only got 208 miles of it from a 75kW battery.
Back in the plus column for Google users, both the 12.3-inch gauge cluster and 9-inch infotainment screen now take orders from Android Automotive, which syncs contacts, calendars, and addresses for easier navigation integration.
Overall, color us intrigued by Volvo’s march into the subcompact crossover future. At KBB, we’re already huge fans of the XC40.
We named it a Best Buy in the subcompact luxury category for 2019.
And we happen to think the XC40 Recharge is going to generate a lot of buzz, too. Get it, buzz, cause that’s how the motors sound?

Took a test drive yesterday at my local dealership. Loved everything about this, especially the incredible torque. Even with the low profile 20” tires and deliberately driving on cobblestone side streets, the ride was surprisingly comfortable. Just wish that for $59k sticker price the range was more in the 250 range.

I drive all over my county (Sonoma) and neighboring counties regularly for my business for years now, and I've never approached 200 miles any one day. This sounds fine for me, I only need to:
    A) Sit inside and see how my legs fit (I'm 6'2"), I've turned down lots of standard SUV's because of leg space, until I discovered Toyota Highlander years ago; am in a fairly new Hybrid SUV now.
    B) See how the visibility out all windows is while in the driver's seat.
    C) Check the trunk room storage width. Very important, as I must lay down music gear in the trunk (laying left-to-right) which I can do in all my Highlanders.

I’ve owned 2 Teslas (3 and Y). After shopping all available EVs at the time (2019 and 2020), I settled on the Tesla for many reasons. Panel gaps and paint issues aren’t really an issue. Any panel gaps I had were fixed within the first couple of weeks by a crew that comes right to your driveway to do it, or your work, so no time missed by having to bring the car in. Haven’t had any paint issues beyond what I’ve had on other cars. Unless you’re super anal about paint, you’ll be getting chips, etc. within weeks just from regular driving. Those who are anal will be paying to have the PPFd/ceramic coated, which normally is prefaced with paint correction. In the end, most people don’t realize how little range you can get away with. I sold one of my TESLAs and now looking into the other options out there, among them, the XC40 recharge, XC60 T8, Jaguar iPace, Audi e-tron, etc...all with less range than my TESLAs, but having had EVs for 2 years now, it’s clear how little range you can do 99% of your traveling. My kids share a Kia Niro PHEV with 26 miles of pure EV range. It now has over 450 miles on it and the gas meter has moved 1/16 of a tank.

I bought two of the XC-40s in July, only planned to buy one but with used cars in such demand I received so much on trade in that when added to federal tax incentives and other discounts my price out the door was cut dramatically, and it was time time to go electric. I preferred safety, fit and finish over range, plus the car is just awesome. We received a portable charger with each one plus ChargePoint had an offer for a free home charger for each one. Federal tax credit for 30% off on installation of that also. My only complaints regard electronics and the mobile app. It is still in beta and works for some people and not for others apparently and that’s important on an electric car. I am sure they will get it right, but at this sticker this should not happen. Also, my wife loves Sirius, and of course you get additional free months with the cars, they all do it, problem is there is no app for Sirius for it yet, you have to Bluetooth it over. No apple CarPlay app until next year. In all fairness the Honda and Subaru I traded in had their share of electronic problems of this nature, especially the Honda. These are curable problems and not as bad as many I’ve read about. No regrets so far.

Confused. Isn’t Polestar taking over the electrification of Volvo. Will this car be an orphan in the Volvo universe?

    • @monkz3196
      @monkz3196 3 роки тому +1

Essentially, Volvo's goal is to electrify their entire lineup, meaning there will be a mix of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric models. Polestar is a fully independent brand that has a close relationship with Volvo. An example of the relationship is how Volvo shares many components with Polestar and even has Polestar options within their own vehicles. But, Volvo has introduced things such as limiting the top speed of all of their vehicles which doesn't carry over to Polestar because of the independence of the brands.

@@monkz3196 thanks for the reply. I was at a Polestar store last week. The sales person said Volvo owns Polestar and their cars will be serviced at the local Volvo dealer. He even said the Polestar 2 uses the XC40 architecture. One can hope especially with more range given the XC60 and XC90 are larger overall compared to the XC40. Hopefully they use batteries that have seen significant improvements in range and lifecycles by the time the XC60 and XC90 get the Recharge treatment.
An XC90 recharge would address all of the issues I have with the Tesla Model X as far as exterior style, interior volume, fit and finish, and ride comfort. The numbers don't give any reason to go for this, except may be for someone who is so conservative to stay with an instrument cluster that's missing in Model Y. So $60k for this model minus $7500 tax credit. For $51.5k I’d rather get a long range model Y with white interior. You get substantially more range, a better battery technology. A comparable engine and Tesla’s superior software and supercharging network.

Tesla is still leading EV's.... ANY EV that comes out right now that has less range than 250 miles is already losing. I don't understand why car manufactures are releasing EV's that are already old in terms of range.
the #1 reason of people not buying EV's right now is range. so why release a 50,000 dollar car like this, that is barely going over 200 miles on a charge? makes no sense.
a 45,000 dollar Model Y not only gets access to teslas HUGE supercharger network, but its cheaper, and gets 326 miles of range, software updates over the air, etc.
I don't hate Volvo, in fact, I traded in my model 3 for the gas XC40.
why did I trade in my model 3? cause 250 miles of range simply wasn't enough. so, seeing as the xc40 recharge is only 200 miles, is hilariously bad.

I appreciate the video, but as soon as I saw you instantly speed, I realize a truly mature car is still decades away. That type of power only does one thing, promote anxious driving because it rewards bad driving too much and self control tends to go out the window when that happens. Humanity is still too insensitive and primitive to truly make a mature car. The closest it's gotten is the prius or Tesla model 3 or model y if it would only drive on chill mode without the option to switch to more agressiveness. It's not normal to get in a car and ask how fast can it accelerate. Nothing faster than 8 seconds should be necessary on roads with mature drving habits. Public roads should not be places for people to use 4 ton machines to have "fun." Correction, they could have fun, but fun to me is enjoying the scenery, not speeding and zigzagging past slower vehicles. That is the first issue. Thank you for making the video. Now I know this car is useless.

I thought the auto manufacturers were suppose to give us choices other then Tesla. The only thing that I have seen so far is that Tesla is the EV choice.
