Also, Volvo has said that all their BEV XC40 P8 production for 2020 has already been sold, so if you order one it will be next year. ...... As for me, I'm waiting for the BEV XC90 P8, out in a couple of years. Rumors are that SPA2 will have a 120 kWh battery, and the XC90 P8 will be a coupe-like SUV for better aerodynamics. It's a good car but we have to keep in mind is this isn't Volvo's electric platform full electric car. Neither is the Polestar 2. These are both shared-with-hybrids models. A less expensive, full platform Volvo that's a bit smaller is expected though when it will be introduced is unclear. An xc90 sized full-electric Volvo platform is also going to be introduced but the exact time is not known. It's probably some time next year. As is, the xc40 still has carry-over legacy from the regular XC40 platform as does the Polestar 2 which is on the same platform. The car is a compromise.
thanks very much for well rounded review. it is somewhat surprising that the infotainment has these android phonelike sub menus considering how well it is implemented in the polestar 2. but maybe they will get some updates for better usability ota. one question though: is it known how soon after launch that lower spec xc40 p8's will become available. I really lust for a xc40 p8 but the first launch model price tag is a bit on the high side
Tesla model Y, linked to the supercharger network smokes it for value and real life usage. At GBP60,000 the Volvo will be a rare sight on the UK's roads.
Please stop comparing big SUV with hatchbacks and sedans in range. We don't do it with petrol cars, so why should we do it with EV's? If you buy a SUV you know that it's not great range your getting
This is ridiculously expensive. Compared to a Polestar interface it is so dated; has a small boot and thirsty range does not make it appealing. Coupled with the smug Volvo sales staff I will give it a wide birth. He was struggling to say the price because it was embarrassing. It reminds me of the first edition of the iPace at 80k which was also way overpriced.
Volvo does need to now modernize their cars. Problem with the xc40 is it's not due for a redesign until 2025/2026. But it already is showing some age. The Polestar interface and console dates the other Volvos.
I don’t get why have you so less likes on this video? Yours is an amazing channel with amazing reviews. I noticed there used to be so many likes on Rebecca’s review when she was part of the channel. Were people following her instead of the channel, and liked her instead of her reviews? Well, I liked both and I still like the channel and the reviews. We recently have What Car India channel join the UA-cam. And just like yours, it has amazing content with my favorite anchor, Mugdha Mishra who was with other channel previously. Though, there needs a lot of improvement in the content but the presentation is class apart and conform with the What Car standards. Keep up your amazing review. It’s really interesting to see Volvo joining the league of accessible EVs. Not sure when this car will be launched in India or perhaps will never be launched given Volvo has still not established a firm ground in the country. Competition is ramping up and has become even fierce with luxury automakers bringing their international products to India, some of which are launched first in India itself while others been launched just a few months before international. Volvo seriously need to re-evaluate its position in India for its existence in the country.
Any real tests this can actually do 260 miles in good conditions and not heavy right food? We know polestar 2 does not meet it's stated range and it is pretty weak on efficiency (it is thirsty on electricity)
This car is a bargain. In the us there is such a shortage of used cars they offered me so much money for mine and my wife’s car that I bought two of these.
I get this over a Tesla. For safety, style and build quality. And you compare audi e-tron that cost nearly double . Then forvthe 99 people average daily trip the range of this xc40 is more than enought
Edward Dewhirst in a dream audi e-tron cost 61, is never less tha 80/90k medium equipped. Is xc90 category it is a big suv not a small one the comparison he did is wrong, like is wrong compare the battery miles range of a tesla model 3 which is an hatchback sorry, (correct is a saloon) , with an suv. Anyway if you can afford it, you buy what you like not matter 50 miles more of range or 5k more cost... that’s it.
Too expensive for me, even though I could afford one. The 0-60 time sells cars but in my case I only use this acceleration to show off to friends. I have an eNiro, which as you mention is nearly half the price, and longer range, and gets the job done very effectively.

Worth remembering this is the loaded 1st edition, the other main stream versions will be less expensive, especially with a single motor spec. Audi e-tron is the class above in terms of size and more expensive so not directly comparable.
@@paulholterhaus7084 extras include the safety package advance, interior upgrade package, comfort seat package, intellisafe, surround camera, panoramic roof and several more. When you build it on the Volvo website you can compare it to a B5 build. Here in Germany we still receive 7500€ back due to electric purchase, then it works out a fraction cheaper than the B5 built up with the same extras, but you get 300kW
To clarify, the only option right now is a pretty much fully-loaded one (Lounge Pack à 2000 USD and you are good to go). Still very expensive however, and far from 44k USD.
Just going to wait until the range goes up. I'm hoping Tesla or Lucid leads a massive breakthrough on battery technology in the close future to increase energy storage. Maybe then, a lot of traditional manufacturers like Volvo might slowly start adopting the new technology to really boost the range.
the front grill! people like the original look. The big issues with electric versions is the differences in look. EV`s have to look like the gas versions
in Norway it starts from 59.000 USD or 46.000£ , and we have no VAT or any other tax on electric cars . So they milking the cow a bit more in europe it seems...
Very expensive, but as the man said, this is the all singing first attempt version, cheaper versions to come, Volvo always seem to do it that way tho, introduce a new model starting at the top end, then introducing cheaper versions later on ! but even so, still too expensive for me regardless😂
Why do you guys keep hammering about "how far on one charge"? Not very many drive for more than 3 hours in one go anyway. And how many drive > 150 miles on a regular basis? For long trips you need to look at the combination of range, charging speed and charging network. The e-tron for example charges really, really fast, so even if the range in just OK, it does not matter that much... Look at Bjørn Nyland and his 1000km challenge. That's how you properly measure long distance travel.
Although it's not an SUV, the Polstar 2 is a real banana skin as it's the same running gear, same battery, range and performance etc but and here's the thing, it's over £10k cheaper? I drive an XC40 1st edition and love it but honestly, why spend the extra money??
£60K - far to expensive, it's still to early to commit to an electric vehicle, holding on to my Jag until 2025 when the selection is greater and competition will bring prices to be more realistic
Why on earth does a car like this need x2 201bhp engines? Get rid of one of the engines, replace freed up space with a few more battery cells and get 7.5 sec 0-60 performance (still respectable) and 300+ mile range (very desirable). Oh and maybe re-think the price tag to broaden your accessible market - current lease deals are horrendous! Overall, a lovely quality car with kerb appeal being held back by performance junkies in engineering trying to imitate a race car.... 95% of current and future EV owners are environmentally conscientious and want quality products with efficient running costs. How many real world driving scenarios do you ever go from a standing start to 60mph?!? Come on Volvo, seize the opportunity to make a difference!
I agree with you. Volvo is having an identity crisis right now; on the one hand they go "SAFETY BEFORE EVERYTHING!" and introduce 112 MPH speed limiters but on the other hand they go and build a 402 HP electric car that can do 0-60 in under 5 seconds...why? So you can 0-62 yourself into a tree after mashing it on some ice? And on a model that is the antithesis of high performance, no less. It's almost like they are trying to make themselves irrelevant next to Polestar.
@@XLoaferY Shouldn't do though because the trade deal was a "Free Trade Deal" meaning no tariffs etc ! but maybe it has something to do with Purchase Tax as was, better known today as Car Purchase Tax ?
Yeah that’s usually what happens with EVs. There will be a rapid decrease in the price of all-electric cars generally anyway because more countries such as the uk (my home-country) will be converting to primarily EV only
Plus people will end up doing things with charging networks so charging doesn’t cost you silly amounts and you don’t need billions of accounts for them
Would love to get this - had a preorder at one point - but for the price it's too little range, too slow, and cannot compare to Tesla for self-driving capabilities... Would really like to get something other than a Tesla though...
I absolutely love the design of the Polestar 2 & XC40 recharge but they are caught in the middle of the EV price range. ID4, Mach E, Ariya, Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60 all will have longer rangers and be cheaper. Re: Tesla, all I can say is their build quality is a horror show and that 1 screen crap is basically nonsense. No it's not an advancement my Tesla cult friends.
I remember reading an interview where a Volvo representative explained how the engine adds so little to the total cost of the car on the manufacturing end (compared to the electrification) that it doesn't really matter. If that's true, it makes sense to go with the more beefed-up powertrain as it's just more fun, more enduring and more appealing to the business class.
This maybe expensive but Volvo products have always been unrated for luxury safety and reliability. I have a 2020 Volvo, I wouldn't drive anything else.
Unfortunately if you can’t afford this quality and outstanding safety leading brand you probably won’t have anything good to add. Perhaps you will be more suited with second best. Remember Polestar is largely involved and has been for many years with the development of the brand. One only has to look briefly at the Pilestar 2 to get a realistic sense of where Volvo are heading.
That grill is terrible, would rather have a normal grill so that it blended in with other cars, I don't want a piece of plastic stuck on the front of my car to tell everyone I've got an electric car ! plus it looks like an afterthought which it is ! good to see some manufacturers are sticking with conventional grills. 👍
I think this Volvo is not yet ready for prime-time --300 mile range or go home. Anyway, a premium car with instruction stamped into the body? Like having GAS embossed into the C-pillar of your gasoline vehicle.
If the suspension are hard as tesla 3, and it is noisy cabin. Its a failure. I drive lexus, love the soft and quite cabin. Waiting to see what lexus will bring in the market
I feel that its main competitor will be the model Y not the the model 3 but if it doesn't compete on price then Volvo won't be bringing in new customers they will just have their stalwarts who do not look at other brands. Maybe they should have priced it better and grab the huge market waiting for "normal" priced electric cars before Tesla does?
The model Y will be better all round and will sell well. All versions of XC $0 are overpriced. Hopefully ID4 4 will be a much better value for money EV
@@molepatrol7529 All Volvos are over-priced. They are very pretty, but everything else about them is rather crude and restrictive compared to comparably priced alternatives in every segment.

I stopped watching when he told us the price. Crazy.
so at the end of the video. ok
thanks very much for well rounded review. it is somewhat surprising that the infotainment has these android phonelike sub menus considering how well it is implemented in the polestar 2. but maybe they will get some updates for better usability ota. one question though: is it known how soon after launch that lower spec xc40 p8's will become available.
IVE HAD A 89 VOLVO WAGON YRS AGO...I LIKE VOLVO COMFORT SEATS
the XC40 offered great bang for buck... the XC40 Recharge is one of the worst-priced products I've ever seen.
Great review. Keep it up
Any real tests this can actually do 260 miles in good conditions and not heavy right food?
We know polestar 2 does not meet it's stated range and it is pretty weak on efficiency (it is thirsty on electricity)
This car is a bargain. In the us there is such a shortage of used cars they offered me so much money for mine and my wife’s car that I bought two of these.
It is important to compare real world mileage vs. what a Tesla states for optimum mileage.
Had a petrol one for over a year... Brilliant car, looks great. 3 cyl engine noisy tho, and thirsty.
Go electric.
I get this over a Tesla. For safety, style and build quality. And you compare audi e-tron that cost nearly double . Then forvthe 99 people average daily trip the range of this xc40 is more than enought
The Audi E-tron costs 61k, this is 59k - how do you come to ‘double the price’
But why would you buy the ”good enough”, when you could get better for a lower price?
Edward Dewhirst u sure an Audi e-tron costs 61k?
Audi e-tron for 61k? 🙄
I have an eNiro, which as you mention is nearly half the price, and longer range, and gets the job done very effectively.
you're comparing KIA with Volvo?
@@ningster As I say, Kia nearly half the price and longer range than the Volvo and gets the job done very effectively.
@@johndoyle4723 I guess as long as you're happy with riding around in a KIA, then it's all good.
@@ningster I would be and I've owned both makes. Currently its Mercedes C Class for me but waiting for a smaller BEV from them, although given our current usage might go for a Hybrid B Class.
@@ningster i own a Kia Soul ev and am very happy with it. Are you a badge snob,i part exchanged a Mercedes for it.before that a bmw and vw.but I like the Kia the best
Way way over the top pricing. I wonder if this is just an attempt to cash in at launch and in 8/10 months they will be well under £50k?
as others have commented, it has to be around £30k to be even vaguely competitive, IF there's no stiffer competition by then.
Spending 60k on xc40? Ok, with Android auto, But still,,,, why wouldn't i go for model3, which is the benchmark all other models should compare against.
I drive xc60, it’s perfect, fabulous seats , handling , map , soft steering wheel and … 👌
Worth remembering this is the loaded 1st edition, the other main stream versions will be less expensive, especially with a single motor spec.
Audi e-tron is the class above in terms of size and more expensive so not directly comparable.
They don't make a single motor version.........And besides, the xtra motor usually adds only about $3500 Dollars......Paul
audi is even slower ha ha
@@paulholterhaus7084 extras include the safety package advance, interior upgrade package, comfort seat package, intellisafe, surround camera, panoramic roof and several more. When you build it on the Volvo website you can compare it to a B5 build. Here in Germany we still receive 7500€ back due to electric purchase, then it works out a fraction cheaper than the B5 built up with the same extras, but you get 300kW
In Sweden The XC40 recharge inscription is 50 000$ and then you get a state fund of 6000$ so its only 44 000$ here
That is completely incorrect. The XC40 Recharge costs around 70 000 USD in Sweden, minus the government refund.
@@inkognito7722 where did you get that info from?
To clarify, the only option right now is a pretty much fully-loaded one (Lounge Pack à 2000 USD and you are good to go). Still very expensive however, and far from 44k USD.
@@inkognito7722 Plz note im talking about the hybrid
Seemingly performing well even with a non dedicated EV platform
All of Volvo's current architectures (SPA and CMA) are designed to accommodate electrification.

Nice to know 👍
Good review!
The screen & software are really outdated, charging & distance are critical factors to survive on ev market!!
£60k I rather get a Porsche for that money.
£39k here in the US...
The interior for this one is lesser... the others look better. This screen just kinda feels like it isn't a part of anything and I highly dislike it
The interior for this one is lesser than what? The petrol XC40 has the same interior.
We want a review on the rivian suv
Just going to wait until the range goes up. I'm hoping Tesla or Lucid leads a massive breakthrough on battery technology in the close future to increase energy storage. Maybe then, a lot of traditional manufacturers like Volvo might slowly start adopting the new technology to really boost the range.
Dont like the grill
A bit cheaper and longer range then it will be a real game changer for sure…….. ps some of their new personal lease deals seem rather attractive 👍
Yes I am doing this direct with Volvo, seems a good deal
the front grill! people like the original look. The big issues with electric versions is the differences in look. EV`s have to look like the gas versions
60 000 pounds!?!! In the Us it starts at $52 000 USD (£39 000) then you can get a $7500 grant. Like wtf how. In addition 60 000 pounds is $78 000.
that's the brexit tax I'd assume.
in Norway it starts from 59.000 USD or 46.000£ , and we have no VAT or any other tax on electric cars . So they milking the cow a bit more in europe it seems...
I love my regular XC60. Don't see any need to go electric for the next 10 years.
Lovely car but too expensive at starting price of £60k. I could buy 2 new Nissan Leafs (Leaves ?) for that much.
Leafs are ugly and front wheel drive.....Also very cheap interiors compared to volvo
@@paulholterhaus7084 Pay your money, take your choice.
Very expensive, but as the man said, this is the all singing first attempt version, cheaper versions to come, Volvo always seem to do it that way tho, introduce a new model starting at the top end, then introducing cheaper versions later on ! but even so, still too expensive for me regardless😂
@@Colin623 Tesla does the same. Availability of the more expensive models before the lower-spec versions. This way they can recoup costs sooner.
why are all reviewers obsessed with the grill. It's just a grill. Also, Polestar's grill looks soo much better, Volvo should have used that one.
It’s the 5-Star safety rating that makes a Volvo worth the cost, imho. They’ve always felt like you’re driving a tank!
I wouldn´t pay a dime over 40 grand for it, sorry.
in the US, with the tax credit, it's pretty close to 40k.
£60K - far to expensive, it's still to early to commit to an electric vehicle, holding on to my Jag until 2025 when the selection is greater and competition will bring prices to be more realistic
huh no FSD cameras, how will this thing drive me home on new years eve of 2022?
Here in Norway it starts from around £42000. I dont know what went wrong in the UK🤦♂️
The difference is, here in Norway electric cars are completely tax free. Norway is literally the cheapest place on earth to buy an electric vehicle.
@@fridtjofkjeilen6074 Also UK leaving EU probably affects taxes/fees
@@XLoaferY Shouldn't do though because the trade deal was a "Free Trade Deal" meaning no tariffs etc ! but maybe it has something to do with Purchase Tax as was, better known today as Car Purchase Tax ?
I think manufacturers have forgotten how to price cars. Wtf!
No they haven't figured out yet how to make electric cars cost productive
Keep your eyes on the road!
Nice , but Tesla looks more attractive
Just wait a year or two and the price will go down, and they will probably increase the mileage it can do as well
Yeah that’s usually what happens with EVs. There will be a rapid decrease in the price of all-electric cars generally anyway because more countries such as the uk (my home-country) will be converting to primarily EV only
Plus people will end up doing things with charging networks so charging doesn’t cost you silly amounts and you don’t need billions of accounts for them
What. The. F***????? £60k? SIXTY THOUSAND????? Are they insane??? 😳
Lovely car shame about the price!
Screen is too little............Price is too high..............Paul
Diesel🤔_no.
Would love to get this - had a preorder at one point - but for the price it's too little range, too slow, and cannot compare to Tesla for self-driving capabilities... Would really like to get something other than a Tesla though...
400hp and 0-60 in 5 seconds is too slow? What planet are you on?
chinese NIO
Love the car but not for that price sadly.
In the us it costs £39k
I absolutely love the design of the Polestar 2 & XC40 recharge but they are caught in the middle of the EV price range. ID4, Mach E, Ariya, Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60 all will have longer rangers and be cheaper. Re: Tesla, all I can say is their build quality is a horror show and that 1 screen crap is basically nonsense. No it's not an advancement my Tesla cult friends.
There is no need for that much horsepower at the top-end, it would be great if there would be a lower power version.
For £60k, you'll be able to buy 3 x Dacia Spring EV's next year.
quantity > Quality eh?
For £60k, you can buy 3 x Fiat 500 EV’s.
@@nativesystems also a worse car. Insiders say that the 500 is a terrible car
Honestly I’d rather have this one.
For £60k, you can have 2 Honda E’s.
We need XC60 recharge !!!!
That will be on a new platform and not look like the current xc60. Problem is, it may not come out until 2025.
This maybe expensive but Volvo products have always been unrated for luxury safety and reliability. I have a 2020 Volvo, I wouldn't drive anything else.
Absolutely and me too.
£60k? Wtf Volvo? Why is this car so expensive ? Isn't the polestar 2 around £40k?
Well according to volvo the price for a Polestar 2 starts at £49,900. but that's without wheels and tyres 🤣😂🤣😂
I feel like volvo has a bad habit of sticking to the NEDC testing regime which isn't reliable.
all new cars have WLTP cycle numbers.
Nice
Nice but tooooooo expensive. I will keep my M3 performance thanks.
For price ill get suv mustang save some money
it's 200 miles range
That grill is terrible, would rather have a normal grill so that it blended in with other cars, I don't want a piece of plastic stuck on the front of my car to tell everyone I've got an electric car ! plus it looks like an afterthought which it is ! good to see some manufacturers are sticking with conventional grills. 👍
I think this Volvo is not yet ready for prime-time --300 mile range or go home. Anyway, a premium car with instruction stamped into the body? Like having GAS embossed into the C-pillar of your gasoline vehicle.
ELF radiation emits at a lower frequency than RF radiation, but both can cause biological effects in humans and the environment.
If the suspension are hard as tesla 3, and it is noisy cabin. Its a failure.
I drive lexus, love the soft and quite cabin. Waiting to see what lexus will bring in the market
gud car bad price etron a better buy
Range is not impressive in real life 😕 Like the polestar 2 is way off wltp.
In this world the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, with that in mind these price tags are luxury prices. Almost all EV's are in the luxury price range. That's why the average Joe ain't buying them.
I think I'd rather go for a Jag I pace
Who is going to buy a car like this for £60k? So it will be leased and after 3yrs then what?
Either it will lose a shed load of money to appeal to the domestic market or they will stockpile unwanted electric cars. We'll look back at this as a huge mistake
