The solo is from Metamorph (Blue Devils - 2017) - ua-cam.com/video/FO6d8zDf1Hg/v-deo.html
Forgot the eighth note(?) A before the triplet G in m. 7?
Our high school, Hebron High looks very similar to this.
@@waltyt3934 your band is absolutely phenomenal, i loved penstriped

The sight reading:
For real
The highest note I can play is a high A and I can’t play that high like this man can I’m jealous
@@stupido1722 play as in you can play that in a regular whole note
@@stupido1722 I’m a Junior in high school, used to have pretty good range, nothing insane tho, GG is the highest note I could sustain well, but I recently got my braces off, and lost almost all of my middle range, but I’m working my way back up there. When you work at it, make sure the note you are working on gets a good sound before you work on the next highest note.
@@andyzavala2349 sustaining a double g as a junior is crazy. I got my braces off a month ago and I can't even play above the staff without straining

This was the solo that pushed me from a high c to g fuckin slaps
i can’t even get above an A above the staff 😔
@@flitegodzilla3554 it may take a while, but keep at it, you’ll get it. The best part is that once you get it, you’ll probably have it for life. I played trumpet in high school, and I managed to squeak out a high a at the very highest. I could get a high g consistently. After high school, I didn’t play for something like 10 years before I came across another trumpet by chance at a friend of a friend’s house. I worked my way three octaves up the g major scale and barely pushed out the last few notes. Most everything was still there, but my tone was dog shit, and my lips felt like they were bursting at the seams.
@@sadudas11 right now the highest i have played was at least a high C but that’s only on good days, i can play g consistently and most of the time i could be able to play a, and my band director always says “don’t screech the notes” i don’t really understand what he means by that but i always try my best to be able to master the high C for region band
@@flitegodzilla3554 all it is is practice and consistency. If you practice every day you'll see results in weeks not months. My double Gs certainly aren't clean but I can now bang out Es for big band pieces that I couldn't a few months back. You got this bro
@@tomblack458 i will now practice my trumpet religiously now
I love it when there’s a band whose color-guard is finally in sync

yes this is a marching band
Yea cause it does not ever happen with mine
My bands guard is almost always in sync
I don't think that there ever has been, or ever will be, a better moment than this in DCI.
that's subjective
One that comes close is the horn snap in 2018 SCV
@@KorZen10 name one then ,’:p
I mean I love this moment too dont get me wrong, but watch (I think this is the correct year) 1988 scv at the ballad section or phantom regiment 2007 with their firebird closer.
This isn’t even in the top 25.
the minor 11 chord at 0:58 is so well voiced & hits so hard with these seemingly infinite brass doublings
your comment helped me appreicate this entire piece more :o
that is exactly how i viewed it. the brass is so in tune it really makes the whole solo just that much better
1:30 That look just says it all. "Yeah I did that, you're damn right I did that."

Please give more DCI transcriptions, I had no idea how much I needed this. Madison Scouts, Malagueña, mellophone solo, let's go.

Lol my school is the Red Devils
Just the personal meaning behind this whole show is incredible to me. In my mind nothing could ever top this show let alone this solo and whole ballad in general. I’m a trumpet player, this year was when I graduated high school going into the UGA Redcoat band afterwards. Somehow our high school hosts the Blue Devils for practice each year for the South East Championship. I saw this show right before all of my (to this day) my greatest friends all went off to college. This whole show has such a deep meaning and I hope if any of you performers or anyone involved in the making of this show, I sincerely from the bottom of my heart thank you
chs???
Fuuuuck dude, thats amazing.
Uhm… that looked like the Colt’s stadium.
@@phillipmargrave he meant he saw this show played at his school, not this specific performance
ayyy go dawgs. hope i see you next year after i graduate high school
You know, somehow it wasn't until now that I noticed... he releases with the rest of the corps. No holding over, just pure brilliance of collaboration. Gonna be coming back to this solo for decades.
AND he does it with his eyes closed!
And holy shit, actually readable technique notation. Perfectly done with the bend and lip trill and grace notes and all that.
I like when the whole hornline comes in and pins your ears back. That is the moment.
I love this solo because Javier (the soloist) doesn't hog the spotlight from the flugel or from the rest of the band. No holding over after the band stops playing, no interrupting other people's moments, just playing. Just goes to show that when you're good, you don't need to be showy about it.
Or he was just simply playing the music as written...smh🤨
marching bands dont chose their solos lmfao
As a trumpet player, I see a lot of other trumpet players trying to be all showy, and stand out by doing things like that, and the fact that he didn't is very commendable
or just read the dynamics?
@@off3039 yes, but everyone could interpret those differently
I really don’t know if enough people understand or appreciate how incredibly hard that last part was, absolutely fantastic moment🔥🔥🔥
Insane. The amount of air just to play the note in a quiet room, much less to project over an entire band in a stadium. The lungs on that man is unmatchable.
I play trumpet and I can't imagine trying to play that high of a note but maybe I'll get there eventually.🤔😊😁
If you work at it you’ll get there, I went from not being able to play a high C to playing a double G in like a month
@@tenntitan3554 Do some research and you will see to play the highest note is really not about more air.. And as far as projecting over the band, surely you saw the microphone in their bells??? I have played trumpet for more than 30 years just so you know lol.
@@chuckb9595 air is definitely one of the most important parts when it comes to playing in the extreme register. Maybe not necessarily the amount of air, but volume does play an important role in getting that crisp tone and volume (I know it's mic'd but you can still tell from the sound that he's playing extremely loud). Even if you've been playing for 30 years, it's likely not something that an active lead player would know very well, just because it's quite a specialized area of the instrument. This all coming from someone who marched lead trumpet for drum corps this year 😎
Honestly, while I like the trumpet solo in this ballad, I much prefer the flugelhorn solo that comes before it.
Mikey’s first flugel solo in that is absolutely amazing in this show, you’re right. So lyrical and it just sings, so amazing. I love them both, and they’re both my favorite solos, but for different reasons. Mikey’s solo is my favorite lyrical/melodic solo, while Javier’s is my favorite lead solo, his lead tone is just so good. The whole show is just *chef’s kiss*
this post was made by flugelhorn gang
I got chills. Holy shit this was incredible.
Hell yes. And I feel pretty honored to have been there in person watching this performance live. If you've only seen DCI on video, go watch a show live and I promise you will not regret it. It will blow you away, literally
For real
Please tell me why they were made to wear those uniforms? They make everyone look flamboyant and effeminate.
i went and got the worst seats. the ones on the side twoards the top. waste of money
I think even if I become a world class expert at my instrument I’ll never stop looking up to these DCI performers. The sheer skill and dedication and talent involved in achieving that level of playing-at the end of an EXHAUSTING show, while still exuding full confidence and blending in perfectly with the band, giving just the right amount visually, musically, and dynamically-is absolutely mind boggling. Mega congrats to Javier!!!
my friend is graduating high school this year and hes going to his blue devils audition i think tmrw, he also plays trumpet and hes really good, i'm rooting for him
I hope he makes it!
Give us an update! How did he do?
Yeah how'd he do?
Yo what was his name, I might’ve met him there
@@nickg90125 his name is Jenaro
Javier is some other type of creature i swear. This moment one of the greatest in DCI ive ever seen/heard
I’ll never stop regretting that I didn’t go pursue my dream to March in the blue devils drumline. 😢
30 year old Brit here, still regret not trying hard enough to get into DCI corps when I had the chance
While it truly is good I think there’s been many more that have been better starting with Madison or old school Blue Devils.
Just go through Madison in the 80s and 90s and you can hear those boys peeling paint in the stadium. G bugles just ripped.
Exactly...not to take anything away from this soloist bc its an excellent solo....but nowhere near guys like Metzger Brady Noonan and Moss
I agree - old-school one piston one slide bugles from the 60. Check out Skylinesr, Brigadiers, Hurricanes...those had chops and could play.
And Maynard Ferguson.
And the OG’s weren’t mic’d up……they were just plain better lead players from a time when lead playing was on steroids.
ThatWas Loud
That man felt like a god after playing this... and in that moment he very well may have been.
This is the best transcription of this I’ve ever seen! The only thing I can pick up that may have been missed is at 0:21 during the flugel part, the second measure that’s on screen is missing a Grace note from a D up to that E that lasts for the and of 3 and for beat 4, and I think the first note of the triplet in the third measure on screen should be an A, but I’m no expert lol. This is awesome!
You know it's good when it gives you goosebumps on first listen
Insane, I went to high school with this guy🤯
who is he! can’t find any names anywhere on here
@@invalide javier astorga. Haven’t heard much about him in a while
@@JasonDatsko thats crazy. Was he good in hs?
@@chief7573 He was insanely good, always taking stuff up a couple octaves, drove the band director insane haha
@@JasonDatsko wow!!!!!!!
This shits literally mind blowing to me, could never imagine myself getting remotely close to this but I’ll try.
I’ve listened to this song so many times, and every time I’ve listened as a trumpet player I always cry. This song has so much emotion to it and I know how hard it is to hit a high D in itself is very hard. Good job
W o w…
That looks amazing! I’m in high school marching band right now, and our director talks about DCI a lot
*cries in Malagueña*
Wasn't that a Mello solo?
This solo is soooo epic! Bad ass!! Ppl havent talked about it but i love what the front ensemble adds to the whole sound of this ballad. It just makes it even better then what it already is! Well done to everyone involved!!
Yes a true ensemble performance!
Absolutely agree. I am a horn guy and LOVE the FE work throughout this show. My favorite is the kit dude. His snare work, particularly in the trumpet feature tune, is sooooo tasty.
BD doesn't usually do Nostalgia shows, but when they do, and dedicate it to Jerry, this is what happens.
Yoooooooooo. I didnt know you were a DCI fan! I instantly clicked. This was my first watched DCI show and sparked my interest and passion into music.
Ok, at first I wasn’t blown away. However, that was pure! What like mostly was the fact that arrangement was allowed marinate and breath and play to the end. Bravo. Too many times, the DCI arrangements are much too short, and seizure-inducing and don’t allow the audience to get sucked in.
80's, 90's DCI is awash with stupendous solos...
And with music, you know, tunes rather than just “effect” although credit to the visuals and musicianship which is unsurpassed IMHO
I agree. This is a great solo but I’m still alittle biased towards some 80’s and 90’s. The intro to La Fiesta in 86 is unparalleled.
Was fortunate enough to see the Blue Devils a couple times live during my stint in marching band in high school. They're the best.
George Collier doing DCI was the highlight of my week, Blue Devils 1990 closer would be amazing to see transcribed 🤞🏽
I WAS THERE! Loved this show so much.
Thank you so much for these transcriptions
It’s been a minute since the video was over and i still have chills. This is incredible.
Whoever wrote that solo must've spent so much time to give someone an experience they will never forget
I wish everyone could have been there live. Beyond incredible.
This is awesome! Thanks for this Holmes
Breathtaking. This is amazing!
I’ve at least watched that show 100 times it’s one of the best I’ve seen in my life. Seeing this from a trumpet player myself
Alternatively, young George Lopez in a tunic plays a trumpet solo.
The best AND smoothest! I was having a hard time liking drum corps for a year or two, this show was literally two blocks from my house, and I didn’t go. Man, now I love this show so much, I’m kicking myself for not seeing it live!
Ngl, that exceeded my expectations very much to my satisfaction. It probably helps that I'm also a trumpet
I met this guy at my school a couple years back, he’s now in the navy or something. He’s pretty chill
I'd love to see a transcription of one of John Popper's harmonica solos from Blues Traveler. His licks are on another level!
Love u javi, still gives me goosebumps
That smolder at the end was crazy 😂
I need more cow bell
Maybe Trumpet, but not Bugle. So many great bugle solos over the years. Great job on the Transcription.
this is a fun channel. just great stuff. thanks!
My ears are blessed, what an amazing trumpet player 😭💖
i saw the title, tried to think of counter-examples, then realized i probably couldn't argue. hard to beat
plenty of legendary soprano solos, though ;]
I attempted to play this and that’s the day I learned I can play double a 😂😂
I was a trumpet player in high school and college..marching band..… I have also a dance minor in college… if I had it to do all over again.. I would have done DCI… this was amazing. Love this.
Bro this was so amazing, I almost cried it was just so powerful, dang 🥲
Fun fact: the original main melody here was all about the flugelhorn. Trumpet kills it too tho.
Damn
This is my favorite trumpet solo in dci history.
I *LOVE* those mallet runs. So crisp!
Wow! That guy sure has quite a range.
The thing is, the song is so loud and amazing that the audience clapping is almost inaudible after it 😂
Love seeing the Blue Devils on your channel!
lol i remember back when i was in high school he came to our band hall to tell us about joining the military band and all of the kids made him play his solo
ANOTHER PERSON WHO LIKE JACOB COLLIER BARBERSHOP AND DCI? NO WAYYYY
Fun Fact: This incredible ballad is based off the song "Everything Must Change" by Bernard Ighner, who died the same year on August 14th and this is something I hope he feels proud of, though huge credits to the blue devils
Any idea who arranged this?
Favorite drum corps show of all time
this solo changed my life
Think you could do the 2021 Phantom Regiment Cannon in D feature. It’s actually a pretty cool part, but I can’t figure out the mellophone notes..
My drum major from my freshman year was a mello this year for phantom regiment
WHY THE HELL AM I TEARING UP LOL
This is the definition of spectacular

im in a weird middle ground, where i don't really like all the recent show concepts, but their execution is just _so_ good. Max respect to all the performers
1:07 That was so badass.
this is godly, unmatched wow
Why is he playing so low, I can play 2 octaves above that without the mouthpiece, also, he seems a lot like a freshman when he takes a breath. Like, if he is the best trumpet player in their band, they must suck. Also, he needs a shinier trumpet.
That was all a joke. He is SOOOOOO good. If you are seeing this soloist:) ily
