I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962...

Glad to see Camp Deer Skull is still there. Funny that this is the second attempt only to be turned around....again. LOL! Even though it was brutal, you guys definitely got some milage in that's for sure. Some great shots all over in there. Thanks for the cheers! DING! DONG!

It's on my bucket list to do this summer. The hard part is trying to go during low fire season as from the looks , fires have hit this area hard.
Planning for escape routes will now be part of my planning. Thank you for sharing.

For some reason, this place burns quite a bit. Watch out for disappearing trails! Hope you have a fantastic trip!

Great minds think alike. I went in on Thursday (the reason why my vehicle was in the intro but gone when you came back). I did the same route except the first day I went down to almost Third Creek trail. There is suppose to be two trails that go back up to Oregon Butte but they are gone. My trip turned nasty. After going down to Third Creek I knew I had over shot the junction. I went back up the trail to a little piece of wood was nailed to a tree. Realized that had to be the junction so across the creek and found pretty much nothing. The one trail might have some remnants might still exist but I don't know. The next three hours were spent working through cliff bands till I came out on top. Thankfully my guess was right and I came out on Weiller Butte trail. Back to the trailhead I went. Started at 6 am and got the trailhead at 4 pm. I would have hiked the trail down to the Wenaha River but what you found is why I quit. 4 years ago I tried coming up from the Troy OR and the trail basically was disappearing on me. I'm glad I cut that trip short and just got of there. After breaking out at the top I found way cooler places to hike to with whole lot less off the Weiller Butte trail which is established. If your interested on trying that I tell you were they are at. There hard to find more from navigation than physical.

That is so cool that you were there when we were! It would've been great to run into you!. I've tried that trail from the bottom and the top now, and I'm over it. I mentioned the conditions to Holly from the WTA, so maybe they will get to it at some point, but it might be disappearing. Too bad. I didn't see the wood on the tree that you mentioned, but we were probably too focused on staying on trail...

@@mountainwanderer I think it had something written on it like back in the 60's but now there is nothing on it. It was only about 3 inches by 8 inches. I knew that I was close so I was watching for something. This doesn't shock me because this whole area seems like nobody is interested in doing anything with it. You notice how many established camps there is in the wilderness which is a no no, but nobody does anything. Over here on the Walla Walla side were I live the people build shelters and they go in and tear them down. It makes no sense to me on how they manage this,

@@jonvenden4284 I hate when I come across bushcraft type shelters in the wild. On third fork creek, we only found the remains of a camp complete with all of the trash they left behind, but other than that we did not see one camp in that drainage.

@@mountainwanderer Where I camped along the creek there was sort of a trail. I crossed the log and tucked over on the other side was a camp. I'm hoping the snow will leave Eagle Cap this weekend and I can go down there next weekend after this heat wave. Fall is going to be the best time to backpack because of the warm temps.

As you saw, there was a huge fire in 2015. Used to hike in the area. Like you found, some of the trails aren't well-used. Been on Cripple Creek, Mt. Misery, etc. Gorgeous, unusual country.

I don't know what it is about this area, but it seems like it always gets hit with a fire.... It is a really different area as there are no mountain tops, but bluffs. The canyons are every bit as deep as you'd think! Thanks for watching!

We tend to go out to places and trails that don't see many people. Getting turned back is pretty common for us, but we're keeping real on this channel and that makes for a good adventure! Thanks for checking it out!
