In 1974, my parents bought several boxes from railroad freight….sight unseen, all they knew it was bedroom furniture. They paid $175. They gave it to me for my daughter. It was heavy, Queen Anne design, years and years of paint, layered over and over. It took me two years to strip it and clean up the pieces. It was a dresser, chest of drawers, vanity, mirror, seat, night stand and head board, solid walnut, even the back was finished. It was accented with oak burl. I had it appraised and it appraised for $16,000 in 1976. We sold it years later for $26,000. My parents didn’t live to see that, sadly. It’s amazing how often we can acquire things and don’t realize their true value.

@@spacecadet2172 - Lol, probably would have increased in value, but not that much. It was absolutely gorgeous furniture, museum quality. When my daughter was little she hated it, it was too “adult” and old fashioned. All her friends had white bedroom sets and frilly stuff. By the time she was a teen, she loved it.

A couple of brooches were $2,000, and her wedding ring 55 years old was $7500. The chain might also be solid gold. It's mentioned in the video that the two large filigree pieces have replacement fixtures, which are newer and could be made of a cheaper material. Even if the original pieces are solid gold, filigree never weighs all that much. Because the appraiser said the crafting techniques were very common and had been around for a long time, it sounds like the price is based more on the value of the raw materials; ergo, the heavy chain has the higher value.

This is why I don’t watch the British version of Antiques Roadshow, the highest items out of HUNDREDS I’ve ever seen was $8,700, the American version, I’ve seen dozens of items appraised for over $500,000

Must be an old video as there is more than 2000 pounds worth of gold in that necklace. If there is 4 ounces of gold in it, then its worth more than $11,000.
