- All valuations were correct at the time of broadcast. This lady brought in a box of gold jewellery for the Antiques Roadshow expert to look at, but it was actually the necklace she was wearing that intrigued the expert most. Dating from about 1840, it has a surprising valuation that shocks the owner. Hugh Scully and the experts from Antiques Roadshow take a look at some fantastic antiques and the history and stories surrounding them. This clip was filmed in Lyme Park in 1999.

In 1974, my parents bought several boxes from railroad freight….sight unseen, all they knew it was bedroom furniture. They paid $175. They gave it to me for my daughter. It was heavy, Queen Anne design, years and years of paint, layered over and over. It took me two years to strip it and clean up the pieces. It was a dresser, chest of drawers, vanity, mirror, seat, night stand and head board, solid walnut, even the back was finished. It was accented with oak burl. I had it appraised and it appraised for $16,000 in 1976. We sold it years later for $26,000. My parents didn’t live to see that, sadly.
Great story. I'm sure it's wonderful to think that you are now a part of that story.
That’s too bad you sold it. It would be worth about $140,000 today!
@@spacecadet2172 - Lol, probably would have increased in value, but not that much. It was absolutely gorgeous furniture, museum quality. When my daughter was little she hated it, it was too “adult” and old fashioned. All her friends had white bedroom sets and frilly stuff. By the time she was a teen, she loved it.
@@mchapman1928 that wouldn’t reflect any increase in value. The price I mentioned is just from inflation alone! Glad your family enjoyed it tho, that’s what matters.
@@spacecadet2172 - Old antiques are valued according to the current market. There are ups and downs.
What a delightful man he is! His expert opinions were always delivered with such great charm and affability--always of great interest.
an absolute gentleman and a sharp dresser
What a delightful man he is! yes, ' can you take it off, Iet's have a really good look.' 1:35. lol.
GARBAGE = low balling and not once !
That man wears women's underwear. Strange man indeed
Ronnie,, whatever the rest is, please, keep your know nothing comment to yourself
I am very glad that you took the time to define muff chains.
That one caught me off guard. I wasn’t ready 😂
it it some BDSM thing?
Cant beat a muff chain
Thinking of getting myself a muff chain..🤔😜
😂
Can’t beat a bit of classic Roadshow!
Glad you're enjoying the channel, David!
Thank you. Refreshing to see such good pieces @@BBCAntiquesRoadshow
I’d love to shadow these experts and learn how to do what they’re doing
@@lindam9085 Just read extensively on one single subject that interests you, take in and remember all the information you can about that one thing. Allow yourself to become obsessed.
I miss watching this show. It reminds me of the times when we couldn't afford cable but the antenna would get this show
This and messing with the antenna to try and get the Saturday morning kids shows bring me back.
I love Geoffrey Munn. He's just a delight.
Is he the dude yammering about muff chains?
Wow, I thought they would be worth more than that! I'd buy the lot at that valuation. Gold will only appreciate.
This was filmed in 1999...price of gold was much different than today
You can probably 10x those prices for todays value due to increase in gold price, higher collector demand and overall inflation.
Such an enjoyable show❤
I have watched it since it began, in 1979, and try not to miss it,
*And that small piece of jewel that somehow snags on the back side of your shoulder as you were leaving your home, that usually goes for around £150,000.*
Life changing.
Wow that necklace is to die for😊
Muff chain 😂😂😂
@@SaydeeEnward4500 korek.. and a special one
After my mom died, she had an old fashioned case of jewelry, some from her grandmother, she never wore it because she thought they were too gaudy. A couple of brooches were $2,000, and her wedding ring 55 years old was $7500. But we laughed because the appraiser also had pieces from Avon in the case, but we didn't know and still paid the $25 for each item appraised.
Beautiful 🎉
Muff chains... im dead 😂
The price of gold is 8 times higher than in 1999. That 2000 pound necklace is probably closer to 20 000 pounds now
That's a heavy fuckin' necklace.
@@finnthehuman2289nah, it probably isn’t actually that heavy, the 1999 value was probably between 5 and 10x the melt value of the day, it appears pretty thin, not like a giant chunky Cuban link or anything
I just love when that happens:)❤
Geoffrey Munn, class act. Very young here.
Now in 2023. Over 24 years later I wonder where that necklace is now. I’m sure it’s worth way more that $2000 today.
Probably more like 20k now
Thats 2000 pounds, not $$, the two do not transfer equally.
@@Pube-Dental-Flosswouldn’t sell it for under 40k want it get it at the price or find another ohh wait there are none take it or leave it that would be the best part of selling a legit antique literally rare to even have one looking newish
@@angrydalekat the time the dollar and pound were very close in price
In 1999 when this was filmed, the average exchange rate was $1.62 / £1.00. Not close at all. @@Noles4life77
Mark Cuban annotated portrait about to hit market, commissioned by Bob Kratovil about 15 years ago, this is a fascinating work and should not be ignored.
Very nice
Bro was thinking someone gonna melt this down as soon as its sold and said the gold value instead.
Beautifully man soooooo interesting
Seems a really nice person
Muff Chains 2:10 well we need to bring these back in 2023
🙂
He enjoyed saying Muff Chain a little too much @@stephanieyee9784 😺
Delighted for Deirdre. She's had such a hard time, with being in prison, numerous break ups and Samir being killed.
Surprised? Yes ! Good .
Great pieces of jewelry. Although I thought they’d cost more
How can the be worth just 350 Pounds??? They would be wort more as melted 18 carats gold!
Most interesting aspect of the video is the size of the appraisers moons on his fingernails.
Love Antiques Roadshow- they have someone come in with a 50 year old Rolex that's one a a kind, with box and papers, owned by some famous person, and then tell the person it's worse less than the same makes basic model in the shops.
0:05 "Look at the gleaming..."
Ricky Gervais' response to shiny gold "The gleam! The gleam!!!" whilst laughing because he found the word "gleam" funny.
Edit: Just for a bit of context: Stephen Merchant's father was showing off a new golden watch and said to each person at a gathering "look at the gleam on that" (in a working class/Del-Boy type of way ahah).
Hey, where u find my bracelet? Thanks ✌️
I have one too ❤
came from trending thinking this was gonna be seven figures but i just got clickbaited by a 20yr old clip of some trash gold clasp
Hope she kept it a bit - as the gold has so much risen in value since then
The original book of the story Wizard of Oz with author signature appraised at 100K in 2000s now its probably work 150k-200k . At auction, it would go for half a million dollars. The family wasn't interested in selling it .
I think she was thinking it was for another muff, and was relieved it wasn't.
Hilarious she was actually wearing the most interesting piece. And what's with all the down votes? Sheesh.
You have filigree gold as well in Portugal and Spain
...and Greece
But he included Mediterranean countries already. Portugal is not and part off Spain is not as well
When he said it wasn’t a muff chain the face she made was indicative of how I felt as well. “Certainly he’s not suggesting what I think he’s suggesting is he.”
I was a bit let down by the actual idea of a muff chain. 🤭
If it was cleaned and polished it would be stunning
Gotta be careful cleaning old gold pieces. Could easily tarnish it or break it.
The woman in the back with her lip turned up is killing me 😭
No muff too tough!😊
gold was only 270 an ounce in 1999
that was....anticlimactic
But, what is the current value of the British pound? I think it's about 1/10,000 of a quid.
✔️
Why are you showing the peoples reactions at the BEGINNING of the video..??
All my grandparents left us is trauma.
I really wished he explained why the value. 1840s, but to me it is doesn't seem much different than just a gold chain, does anyone know why the values are as they are?
Teutonic hair lol
'Muff chains...'
Not as high as I thought
I met an exotic dancer in Berlin a few years ago that wore muff chains 🤔 not sure they were worth much though 😂😂😂
Is this also stollen from GOLDEN BIRD
It’s not a muff chain, ok!?
I am going to assume "muff" means something else in the UK.
A muff is a handwarmer. Cylinder and made of fur (other fabrics in today's time) that you stick your hands into either end to keep them warm.
He is basing the other Gold jewelry on the current spot price of Gold at that time which wouldn't have been a lot. Today Gold is sitting at around $2,000 an ounce, it was only around $300 an ounce back then.
What? That is a tiny fraction of what I expected to hear.
What would that be worth today??
Good name for a band “The Jesus and Muff Chain”.
2 grand lol Its a cheap worn out renault clio with no tax or mot if your lucky
Adjectives used by GM. Surprised gleaming fascinating significant filigree granulations phrasing woven perishable sensibly oddly complicated disproportionately demolish erroneously ancient dustlike mysterious decorated pandora marvellous.....my wordle scores have improved. 🤣
Muff Chains? lol
We need a diver now to go with the muff 😩
i would pay some millions. (my dad is the bezos).
Wow, enough for a months rent in York
Did he just said "Muff-Chain"?
This video is from the 20th century... wonder what it's worth now
I sat through all that for 2 grand….
How can the be worth just 350 Pounds??? They would be wort more as melted 18 carats gold!
Muff chain
Most have been stolen during war
Why would you say that?
It's from ze germany. We all know who it belonged to and how the.husband or father of this lady got it.
€2500 for the lot there I saved you 3 minutes
I call bullshit. The gold itself is worth more than he estimated each PC for
That lady in back wearing black looks like she’s about to leap out and claim they were stolen from her mother on her deathbed.
oooh what a disapointment
In 2024 theres probably 20k worth of Gold
Well that was extremely disappointing. £2k isn't exactly shocking for jewelry.
This was filmed in 1999. Can easily add a 0 on the end.
Surprised? Oh Hell, Yeah...I thought, it would be 6 or 7 fig sums.... but 2000 and 900...even the lady looked surprise "ONLY 2000, Mate?)
That was a lot of money in the late 90s.
@@apebass2215 Must be it, I was thinking is that even worth the weight in gold?
🤨 You're making yourself look foolish.
@@British_Rogue Well gold is going for $2k an ounce right now, that's a nugget the size of a fingernail.
Muff chains, heh
And she casually wears it like a junk chain… 🤦🏼
That is darn cheap. I hope she didnt sell it
Demolished, once and for all... hahahahahahah!
The definition for muff has obviously changed.
Oh, thaaat kind of muff. 😀🤦🏼
yes.........my mind went there too
@@tomcat2395 So did the owner's mind!!!
That was really disappointing, to be honest. Not really shocking for jewelry at £2k.
Filmed in 1999....
" MUFF CHAINS"? ha ha ha
£2000 lol worth more then that
2000 quid back then would be worth like 5 grand+ now
A mclaren 720s cost way more than price of gold and silver of today.
Say muff one more time
The more wearable one is worth more simply because it is more wearable, .... and it's the one you are wearing ...
How come all these antiques videos look like they're from the 1980s? Is Britain stuck in a time warp with Dr. Who?
It says top right it’s from 1999
worth only 2 thousand pounds? that's just $2, 000 dollars !!!!!. not much at all
2,000 pounds is a lot! How did she manage to wear that around her neck!?
My granddad was given it by a dead jew
When was that aired, 1972? 2000 pounds, hahahahah
wow = just the weight of the gold would be at least 5,000 pounds = i just do not understand low balling valuable jewellery = are they not SWORN valuers ! i smell a rat and a fishy one at that !
Antiques road trip is abysmal
2400 lol highest value,, junk
