Subway - Not Starbucks Or McDonald's - Has The Most Locations
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лют 2025
- Despite the seeming ubiquitousness of McDonald's golden arches and the Starbucks mermaid, the sandwich chain Subway actually has the most locations of any restaurant worldwide, about 43,000 in 2017. This number, however, belies the economic reality: while McDonald's and Starbucks continue to grow their profits, Subway's have been slipping since 2014. Industry analysts point to a few reasons for this, including a lack of innovation and fraught relationships with franchise owners.

Subway - Not Starbucks Or McDonald's - Has The Most Locations | CNBC
Problem is usually they have only one person making the subs, and they are typically grumpy. So your whole experience rides on that one person.
borg386 IKR? There should be at least two employees the whole time.
Henning Gu yes true, but I’m basically just talking about the one making the subs.
Not a major complaint, more like a pet peeve only.
Come to a real city where during lunch hour they'll have 4-8 people rotating two lines during lunch rush hour.
John Possum yeah your right . I don't really live in a big city. I guess if it's franchised too maybe then the owners might be cheap and have the bare minimum workers they can get away with.
borg386 I haven’t experienced that, but in general I’d say they offer not enough choice, and well only their baguette style sandwiches. So I find myself not as often wanting a sub
Every time I go to Subway, they get so upset when I ask for some more vegetables. They act like every olive I take comes out of their paycheck!
Omg I know where this is from😂😂
I work at Subway, and I also think it’s ridiculous how few olives my bosses want me to put on a sandwich. If you were ever at my subway, I’d hook you up.
Migi, you're one of the good ones. I appreciate the hook up
haha..really? which state ?
Prashant, In California. But it probably happens nationwide and globally, I'd imagine
Locations doesn’t equal sales.
weeow.. Thanks for telling us.. I was sitting here thinking my local grocery store makes more than Walmart.. thanks.
Wtf really i never knew that holy cow im baffled
Don't*
actually location is a huge part of sales lol. It doesnt equal it, but it does play a big factor
Thanks genius
Subway needs to bring back and keep the “$5 Footlong” campaign in 🇨🇦. Its menu is way overpriced for what the restaurant offers.
Honestly it's a soggy sandwich, and the meat doesn't taste very good.
5 CAD is 3.82 USD. Obviously they couldn't keep that price.
way overpriced????
$14 (double lunch meat) satisfies me for 6 hours. The BMT footlong with chips, soup and a fountain drink always delivers.
Better than $13 for French Toast at a local diner.
BB Cute Thats still available in the US lol
Honest truth is, the franchise owners are not making money off of the $5 footlong campaign. Heck, some Subway places are even losing money if they ran that promotion. That's why a lot of franchise owners were protesting AGAINST that promotion. It's all true, you can look it up..
Every subway worker is the most miserable person on the planet though.
CoderShare true and they get sick because of handling the chemically sprayed prepackaged food
It depends... here in Dubai, they're friendly and nice people
Not ours, we go before band and our lady seems to love her job...

I don't think you have any taste. I think subs are good.

Starbucks is overpriced. It doesn't even have good coffee. (Main reason why there are none in Australia)
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) You are very wrong. Look again.
There are some mate, just not many. I saw a doco on starbuck in Aus. And they claim they don't even bother targeting locals to come in their stores (in Australia) anymore, they target tourist and expat Americans.
Greg Dundee
Yep, tried to keep my comment short.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) yes their coffee is really bad but I don't think it's overpriced.
Aria Antoinette ritcherson coffee? or 1% coffee and 99% sugar?
I just go to publix and order a sub there and ask for extra stuff and they dont charge for extras. Subway is overpriced
Definitely less Publix locations than subway though
Publix is only a southern American thing though :(
Yes! Publix subs are the best!
@@Porter5habazz agree
I guess you don't need to have the most locations to be #1...
But you clearly need to have many
Quality over quantity. In 20 years McDonald’s and Starbucks will have more locations.

Subway didn't "close" anything, 500 franchisees had their dream die and locked their doors. Reporters seem to identify the Franchisor as having the power to close down stores, or that's the impression they give. Starbucks owns all their stores, no franchising, so when they close stores, they are really closing them.
True but frachisors losing stores represents that the stores are not all turning profit)
(btw, they aren't. Subway is not the best franchise to get into)
Starbucks just doesn't call it franchise but license: " Out of the more than 15,000 Starbucks outlets throughout the world, 6,497, or about 42%, were licensed as of 2021." That's far away from owning all stores.
Compare overall square feet of all restaurants and I think Mcdonalds would win by a landslide
HAx2 McDonalds is in the real estate business
Pernection all franchisors are i guess. owning the land, its a way to get the better of the franchise you offer to someone else to earn profit.
And the quality and location of the real estate..
@@jeromecastro6940 Not all
HAx2 yeah every subway is small lmao
their tomato is still soggy, not fresh like they used to be a few years back. and i can only eat tuna sandwiches so much until you get tired. Subway needs new sauces, and completely new meats away from mainly cold cuts
They are supposed to cut the tomatoes everyday and then stick them on top of a tray to drain out the liquid. The problem is the owners are cheap and want them to use all the tomatoes when you need to throw out the last two layers because they become soggy. Subway sucks I worked at Subway through High School.
The tomatoes being soggy can be a local issue which most franchises struggle with.
The tomatoes are cut fresh. There is no reason for it to be soggy,
Subway manager in Canada here- tomatoes come from Sysco food suppliers. Tomatoes are cut everyday and at my locations we stack the tomatoes on its side as opposed to laying the flat side of the tomatoes upright. This way, the tomatoes don't get as soggy as they would if they were laying flat.
The boxes they have the tomatoes in are probably an issue to. When I cut tomatoes at my works sometimes there will be a tomato that refused to get cut by the cutter and it gets a bit smashed and mushy. I understand if it's some to be mushy, but all of them is another story.
Try Subway wraps or croutons.
There's not a single Subway in my country and I don't understand why.
what country do u live in

I don't particularly like subway, but I have been finding myself eating there more regularly because I want to get away from all the greasy garbage
Me the same. Apparently subway is quite a success in Australia as we don't have many healthy alternatives when eating out.
well subway is usually far from healthy, or at least with how I have my sandwhiches made. It is, however not drenched in grease.
@@drdwkelley yeah it depends on how you make them. You can make them quite healthy with the right bread and meat, or no meat if you want that.
Their chicken meat is not even chicken. Their tomatos are way too soggy.
We have four subways in my country but my expierience with them is not good. Plus other people seem to not like it as well.
I guess our franchise stores are just terrible.
Buy from an independent sandwich shop then, not this Subway rubbish.
Whatever you say, I still love Subway
My Reason is why McDonald still has the highest sales due to their aggressive marketing, lower cost, brand and UNHEALTHY food. In Japan, I always eat healthy foods but there are times (once a month) where I just want to crush my diet and eat McDonald Big Mac with french fries and Coca Cola.
Big mac is the best
Subway makes a decent meal sometimes (and for a decent price), so it's not a bad thing... I just hate it when certain locations have cheapskate owner-operators who skimp out on the toppings. That certainly doesn't look good for your brand.
actually you most likely mean the opposite. You like when the employee gives you more toppings then they are supposed to.
Employees have a chart on their end usually stuck near the toppings section that says how much to put of each. Appart from lettuce, it's very specific and sometimes not much
Gabzo Avro - Oh, you are correct. A certain cheapskate guy, though, he puts on six olive slices, you ask him for extra, he puts on four more. I'm definitely going to the location that gives you 12 olive slices to start! It's also the owner at the generous place.
I paid $7 something for a 6 inch Steak sub.
Only extra topping I got was avocado...for 75 cents.
Subway is a place where if you go once or twice, you won't feel going back there again for about a month or so because of lack of varieties they offer whereas, you could go McDonald everyday because #1 they are cheaper and #2 they offer a lot more varieties..
Subway is so yummy and I have so many memory's there, honestly it's very sad.
I usually feel sick after eating at subways
Brian M. U got try the cockmeat sandwich that I serve
The thing I like about Subway is that I can choose exactly what I want on my sandwich and the employees don't get to act like they didn't hear me because they're doing it in front of me. I've been to McDonald's and asked for a specific item to be removed from my burger (i.e. pickles) several times and it only happens one in ten times. I can't comment on Starbucks though, because as mentioned in this video they failed to achieve success here in Australia.
Nowadays I just make my own sandwiches for lunch the night before, bring my tea in a flask and my water bottle. I’ve saved so much money.
I actually like Subway more than McDonalds and Burger King. Their food is more delicious. I agree it's boring but I'd rather make my own sandwich than pay the same for just a slice of old meat and sauce at McDonald's. I agree that their staff is super grumpy though.
Agreed. You have the option of your own fillings and sauces and actual pieces of meat. The bread is delicious too. The food in McDonalds is substandard and crap. I dont understand why McDonalds seems to be doing good. Maybe they have more stores than Subway in India. A little over priced but worth the money.
Jimmy johns is better
Wow, I never thought about that but they're right in that subway has not changed hardly anything in like 3 decades. I bought MCD's the other day because of the 2 for $5 summer deal. The chicken nuggets were better than I had remembered. Crispy, very hot, still juicy inside.
McDonald's at noon is really good. The food is usually fresh
Subway just needs to be cleaner

Subway store size is very very small compared to Mc Donalds.

Recently a new subway opened near my house, and there are always customers inside so I don't see the problem
News sponsored by McDonalds and Starbucks lol
Having the most locations does not mean being the most financialy healty, remember the franchisees allegations that the HQ is just for the fees and not for the economic viability of all of its franchisees.
Yup. They don't care.
I just prefer subway because you actually have more options there if you’re vegan.
Rudy Ramos-Lozano their breads have egg

Rudy Ramos-Lozano That’s interesting, every time I go in they always tell me that they all have eggs. 🤷🏻♀️ lol i’ll have to see their ingredients myself, thank you!
Drink That I just get a toasted veggie delight foot long with Italian bread without any of the cheese. I just make sure they use a clean knife every time and that the space is clean while they prepare it as sometimes the space may be dirty with juices from the previous subs they prepared. I also add guacamole sometimes but if not I usually just go with mustard or sweet onion sauce as these condiments are vegan.

$5 footlong was the greatest innovation since iPhone.
In Page Arizona, a population of 7,553 and a area of 38 miles...we have 3 subways. Literally a 7 minute drive through the whole city and you’ll pass 3 subways.
At least Subway is more popular than Starbucks in Australia.
I know why their sales are falling, because they used to have a $5 dollar footlong and now it’s like $10 footlong. I used to go there every week because it was only 5 bucks.
I tried subway once in India. I think you will get much tastier food at much cheaper prices here. Though hygiene takes a hit at some places.
dude subway or not when come to HYGIENE India still India
india hygiene very bad dont go to india...
Tropical countries have different standards of hygiene than temperate countries, as tropical climate which is conducive to the growth of spices therefore spicy food changes one's ability to immunity.
Though we still need to work on but don't react to those people who are not immune enough to tropical climate
We don't need cry babies of the temperate countries who don't have any immunity as they can't handle spice and cry about it
India has a beautiful history unfortunately that's just it. It's dirty, smelly and over crowded.
i can't stop laughing when i just Watched Mightyduck Vines. That One Subway Guy Was Cool Tho.😂😂😂😂
Subways sheer volume of stores also cannibalize each other's, as a franchise if you don't open a store where Subway advises you too, somebody else will get that location and most likely cannibalize your sales.
One of the reasons they have more stores is because the build in small towns. For awhile the only fast food joint in my small town without having to drive into a city 15 miles away was Dairy Queen but then they brought in Subway and Sonic. But no McDonald's in my small town. You have to drive into the city for that
That's nice you have a Dairy Queen and Sonic. It's a hit and miss for small towns to get those places.
*_7-11 has over 60,000 stores in 17 countries in 2018....... Just saying_*
Well are they are fast food company?
Every Subway I know of, is always placed in the worst possible locations. Also I know healthy food isn’t cheap but their food needs to be more affordable if they want to compete with local competitors
Subways are MUCH smaller facilities and they over lease the franchise w/ many franchise owners not doing well
These videos are so well produced!!
The only thing I like from mcdonalds is the fries and the hash browns in the morning.

Umm a footlong COMBO for 13 NZD is 8.62 USD and that's pretty much what you'll pay here in the US for a footlong combo.
al capone New Zealand is 3rd world
I know 3 people who worked for subway and they all said it was disgusting and they'll never eat there. They said the food storage was terrible and they're told to sell food that was dropped or expired.
Subway is a lot cheaper to set up than McDonald's. Much easier to operate too

Subway used to be good, like 12 years ago. Now newer fresher options have come on the scene.

I think the only reason Subways are closing is because their food is not tasty. I've been to McDonald's, Starbucks, and Subway and found the Subway food to be below average.
mmmmm, I love me some subway, especially the BMT with some sweet teriyaki dressing on the side. The only thing I thought was stupid is that they offer a steak sandwich and no steak sauce. What's up with that?
Admittedly I haven't been to subway in at least 3-4 years, though. I got sick of the lack of variety plus there are better lunch deals at Taco John's, arbys and sushi places. *I crave flavor.*

Eat anywhere, everyday, for a month and you'll get tired of it.
In my country the price of a subway sandwich is about 3x a local bánh mì. The last time I've seen a subway store in my city was about 3 years ago lol
Lack of innovations !!👍
The only place I see subway busy is Australia (where I'm from) but I've been to a few countries and subway is usually dead everywhere else

I will go to Panera Bread for a decent sandwich.
I have not eaten subway in several years. I thought their business was suffering due to other sandwich shops offering more variety.
Subway's subs are driving me nuts!!!
They are quite not at all -tasty for me!!!
I live in Sri Lanka and we have a local bread company called "PAAN PAAN" (means "bread bread" in English) and it's way cheaper and a thousand times better than the subway!
Subway sandwiches doesn't have much 'fat' claiming it to be healthier. Which it is not and also makes it taste bad. Without the sauces loaded with sugar, it would taste horrible.
you into spicy food? I like getting the sweet teriyaki sauce on the side when I want more flavor. They ran a chicken version of this sandwich years ago but thankfully kept the dressing.
Don't you guys have a lot of tea?
Subway closing down everywhere here in the states. The stores are more empty than mattress firm.
nothing wrong with subway menu, just the quality of the food is absolute rock bottom.
That makes sense to me, I'm always surprised to find Subways in remote places in Brazil!
McDonald's and Starbucks are really innovative. Not all the innovations are good, but many are good! I like the new McSpicy in my country. They're challenging other fried chicken's company with the new innovation. For Starbucks, the fact that the store usually have the good vibe to sit down and relax is the best thing. I don't care spending more to eat, because I basically pay to sit. It's more important to innovate in terms of cafe nuance instead of menu, and I think Starbucks did pretty well with that.
Meanwhile My country (Denmark) while on the list only has a single Subway in the entire country (that being a tiny one on a streetcorner in the city of Aalborg) with all other previous locations either having closed down or been bought by Sunset Boulevard (A Danish competitor with a similar premise but who was quicker to gain the market and keep it)
Starbucks isn't a franchise they are owned by corporate. To use starbucks as a comparison dissolves you reliability in the information you show in your video. Also locations does not equate to more money. Mcdonalds makes more profit than subway.
Subway made a boom in opening stores run by family owned franchises. You talk to any of their franchisees and find that they hardly ship out new bread, meat, and produce. They’re just on their way out, it seems; closing stores & backing down to their core stores, like JcPenny or Toys R Us did, years ago.
I ate a Subway sandwich in San Francisco once and people looked at me wierd.

According to sources outside of Subway that study franchise chains, most Subways are Mom and Pop stores where the owners work a combined 140 hours per seek for the princely sum of $26,000 US a year. That works out to about $3.57 US per hour. That coupled with Doctors and Associates (the parent company that owns Subway) heavy handed and questionable financial practices has served to drive many of the stores out of business. For instance, Subway recently imposed an additional fee on their franchisees without consulting them. Why? Because someone in Doctors and Associates figured out that they could transfer all of the advertising costs over to their store owners and get away with it. And lets not forget their advertising campaign from a few years ago. "Subway is approved by Doctors and Associates". It made it appear to the consumer that Subways product was healthier and approved by physicians as such and therefore better for you than their competitors but in fact it was hardly any better at all. When the truth came out, many consumers felt cheated and went somewhere else for their fast food driving sales down even further. Subway has been listed as the worst franchise out of the top 100 that you could buy into.
