"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

@@JM-yf3ol just out of curiosity what won you over?, I personally am of the mind that religious and spiritual people shouldn't be in government in general much less as direct representatives their beleif are pre-existing evidence of either an extreme disconnect from reality and/or a person that needs easy answers in lieu of facts, and as a result they are illsuited to politics, and would have a hard, if not impossible time "trying" to represent everyone, as needs to be the case in a functional secular government.
I grant you she may be an exception to the rule, but I wrote her off from politics long ago.
And yes, I listened to the whole speech and mostly agree with her, but I am alittle taken aback that Kyle would endorse her over many of the other names being thrown around... not to mention having no chance of winning the primary, but she could impede another progressive frome having a better shot, she would have an easier time in the general than the primaries, I would think, the same is largely true of all progressives, beit moderate progressives Bernie, or even an actual socialist.

@@YTsupportsZionaziGenocide I liked your comment for the first part about religion but you lost me with your punchline. You're completely off with your logic that she would impede another progressive. If I'm a bad runner, really slow and easily out of breath, am I going to impede a better runner who is faster and fitter than me if I choose to compete in the same race with them? The answer, of course, is no.
What you're actually saying is that you think she can sway sooooo many people that someone YOU think would be better (but objectively isn't) would not be considered anymore but the public. But that is what democracy is. Ppl decide. If your favorite isn't considered because of her then your favorite isn't compelling enough. It's that simple.
For someone who calls themselves deep thought you sure as hell aren't a deep thinker.
By the way, we have a bunch of religious ppl in government who base their political beliefs on whatever religion they follow. She wouldn't make that any worse. Besides, we have the constitution that protects us from tryanny otherwise you'd see bans on abortion nation wide.

I'm a Brazilian raised in the US who moved to Canada, and I hear you. Canadian politics is not perfect, but I feel completely disillusioned by both Brazilian and American politics. I feel like democracies that only cater to the needs and wants of a minority of their population are failed democracies, even if their electoral processes run smoothly (and I don't think that was the case with the democratic primary of 2016 and 2020, nor with Brazil's 2018 presidential election).

I'm from the US and live in Australia, and I have to say, American media is so contaminated and rancid, that it would be so difficult to see the ocean of lies when you're drowning in it. Looking at it from the outside, it's so easy to see that "right" and "left" coverage is so skewed and biased, and hypocritical. If you can see it from the inside, it is only a scratch on the surface to seeing it from the outside in a country which does things so much better. All US corporate media is bought and paid for to keep people fighting with each other. The main thing about Australia shown on US media is the "totalitarian dictatorship" during the pandemic lockdown. The few small pockets of Australia that had strict lockdown rules were not seen or felt in the rest of the country, yet these few places were portrayed to encapsulate the rest of the country. Apart for not going out as much and unable to buy toilet paper for a while, for the majority, it was a minor inconvenience which the government compensated for through very reasonable monetary grants. Not to say that political motives weren't in place here regarding the lockdowns. There were, but nowhere near the extent to the corruption of the US government and media the rest of my family in the US are exposed to on a daily basis.

I remember being one lone fringe comment maker in Kyle's videos, where ever was cheering for Bernie, trying to bring attention to why Marianne had deeper views in some of the same issues Bernie and others were advocating for. Kyle's most support would be that his mom liked Marianne. I am so glad Marianne has stayed around to keep learning, interacting with key players and maturing her already great approach to life, with great focus on politics. I love it that she is still humble, giving credit to the movement mainly, and considering her stance a s work in progress, still learning. I hope she does great and becomes a president who does help create that space for people to thrive, not only in the USA, but the world

What she says at the end there (although all true) is the most true statement out of everything she said. Having lived right on the line of the lower to lower-middle class for some time (before getting a roommate a few years ago to help with living expenses), you learn to live with less than you need. Thing is, even now that money is more managable, I still can't afford things I need. Roomie and I live without central climate control, because it's gonna be more than 5k to fix. We can't get that kind of money together, because emergencies come up, and force us to spend it. You just get used to it (like I'm used to getting cooked all summer in my own home), and it becomes normalized in your head. "I'm fine, so everyone else must be fine living this way, too." But "fine" is not the same as a healthy and stable life.

@@madashell7224 I feel for you, man. There was a period before my roommate moved in that my water pipes popped every winter for about three years. Thankfully the people who repaired it were open to bartering, so I gave them stuff I didn't need to help cover costs (and also watched my neighbors dog a few times while his family was away in exchange for him fixing it the third time). Been very lucky to meet kind people.
I really hope it doesn't come down to violence, but if things don't improve, it definitely will because neither party seems to care about the majority of people- and the majority of people are just scraping by. We can't keep living this way. It's just not sustainable.

I think Kyle's idea is that, in 2024 if we even have a left option, any left option, it has no chance of winning, either the incumbent (Biden) will win, or the republican nominee will win, so Marianne would be good for a primary against Biden just to push him to the left by showing just how much support we can muster, even if we can't win the primary, and then she can get concessions. Nina is better to keep her for later when we have more of a chance of actually winning a primary. And if until then she can get some more experience (like getting elected to the house and maybe a senatorial position too) then that would be great.

Also watching that video reminded me of one of the reasons I like Kyle so much, he doesn't place value judgements (most of the time), he's willing to give everyone, even politicians the benefit of the doubt. Kyle merely gives you the facts of their actions. Because neither you, nor I, nor Kyle can know truly what's going on inside the heads of these people, we can follow clues and make speculations, sometimes really solid ones, but at the end of the day that's all they are, speculations. And they might be wrong. For all I know Joe Biden is actually principled in his corporatist stances, and isn't just doing things the way he does because of reasons of corruption, same way for AOC, AOC has made many decisions I disagree with (voting to fund Israel, not going to the first Amazon labor union rally, etc.) But as far as I know, she is not making money from any corporate interests, she did not take campaign contributions from corporate interests when she run, so I have no clue what could possibly be motivating her to make such decisions half the time, that support the elite, now maybe she is taking money illegally and secretly, who knows, although that's unlikely, so based on my personal analysis, it is much more likely that those decisions are driven by difference of opinion on strategy, stupidity, ignorance and incompetence. And not corruption. Now you might think she is corrupt based on your analysis, and that's fine, but the point is, we don't need to place value judgements. We don't need to know if they're corrupt or not, all we have to do is actually look at their actions. And come reelection you judge if you're going to give them another chance based on that. If their actions were overall good to a significant degree then you support them. If they were overall harmful, then you do not support them. You don't need to know if AOC is corrupt or not. So I appreciate that Kyle doesn't pass down such value judgements, gives everyone the benefit of the doubt, assumes they're working in good faith, and judges them purely on the facts of their actions. Jimmy Dore does not do that.

How about a platform focused on reforming our political SYSTEM/ body politic to better serve the broader public interest as opposed to partisan talking points and/or empty promises?
A platform that includes making politicians/public officials liable to perjury charges!

My mom used to read her books as a teenager. She's unsure if she would vote for Marianne because she doesn't view her as an economically sound person.
I wished Marianne Williamson would disclose more of her economic policy and concretely say whether or not she is actually running.
