"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

It's often a matter of self-preservation. I'm not Jewish, but I was indoctrinated in different ways as a child. Everything I experienced in reality contradicted the doctrinal authoritarianism and all of it could be summed up by: 'This worked for my father in his generation but it won't work for me in mine'. What I was escaping from was, in its essence, a father prepared to sacrifice his son for his doctrine. The wider family is just as bad and spent my adult life continually sabotaging and destroying all my own initiatives, nothing to do with them, preventing them doing nothing, because their absolute need for hierarchical dominance/subservience was 100 times more important to them than their successful careers. It's the most threatening thing on earth to totalitarians to have a crack appear in their totalitarian facade. That's totally alien to me and I still have no understanding why it is that they can't cope with me living my life as I see fit. But it's a sad reality and probably is for far too many people on this earth.....

It's no different than how White Supremacy is perpetuated here in The States.
And you notice it always begins with close knitted separatist communities which if we are being honest in the US includes the Amish, mennonites, most Jewish communities (like Williamsburg Brooklyn but also more subtle neighborhoods), and various smaller religious groups. And they all have 1 thing in common… deep religious beliefs that have no room for questioning said religion.
That hit me hard and made me tear up. I had the exact same upbringing (albeit thankfully did not go on my “birth right” to Israel). I have lost friends and family over my opposition to the apartheid state, but won’t back down. Free 🇵🇸!

This is the first time I've heard somebody say general strike. I've been wanting that for years now. I think that's the only way that things change is the entire middle class has to go on strike and hold out until the ruling class understands that we're not fuckin around anymore.

When I moved to Miami to live with my mom & stepdad, I met a lot of people who were just like how Jen used to be. And I hated every single one of them. Snobbish. Entitled. Rude & racist. How many Americans are taught about how the First Peoples were systematically stripped of their lands, their Holy Places, their dignity, their culture and their lives? None, I would venture to say. Oh, they'll be a little bit, but it won't delve into the shameful, murderous, two-timing, treaty-breaking behaviour of those that have the crass arrogance to call their nation 'Land of the Free' - it was a free land for the First Peoples before you lot killed them off, you know. My country is no better, it won't talk about the dark side of the Highland Clearances, of the anti-catholic bigotry, of the slave trade, of the Empire, of the shameful sacrifice of an entire generation in the futility of the first world war generalship. Taboos exist in every society in every generation and those that break them do so at their own economic peril.

Sooo glad you got this lady on. She showed up somewhere in the past several months on my feed, and I never caught her name. Regardless of the Israel stuff, she is running for the right reasons, and if we have more people like her we would have a very different country. If we can't get money out of politics, maybe we could get people who don't care about money in? I'm sure that is 100% now naive, but I'm not sure what choice we have left.

I went to a public high school and I’m not Jewish. I will always remember one of my classmates going on his birth right trip and then coming back and having active duty IDF members come speak in my English class about how ethical they were. How they wouldn’t use drone strikes like America but used special forces which increased there risk but lowered casualties.

As an Arab I feel the need to talk honestly to all honest Jewish people that we Arabs have absolutely no intentions to harm them and we never had. Since I am retired, I have plenty time to read and to inform myself. Regarding Israel, it was mind-blowing what I have red in the books od Ilan Pappe and others. The official narrative about Palastine is simply propaganda. I see the future of Israel, like it is constituted nowadays, as unsustainable. I see in future one liberal democratic state, from the river to the sea, called Palestine, where all citizens have the same rights and are equal.
