Happy Sunday Elle, I think the takeaway is pets are not cheap in general but you do a great job of being real about costs so beginners can be prepared. Have a great week 😊

oh my goodness yes to the bearded dragon section! I was told by a beardie owner that they are rather cheap pets and good starter pets for college students. I'm definitely not broke (yet...), but I think I spent about $500 in the first few days?? And he's 5 months old so I'm spending a lot on food. I received a "starter pack" from the rescue I got him from which consisted of a heat lamp, 40 gallon tank, water bowl and food bowl, basking rock/hide which is AWFUL to clean up, a little stair case thingy and a fake tree with plastic/wax leaves that melted under the heat lamp... No shade to the rescue, I think they're great! But because they're a rescue and therefore not a large business they don't have the money for the best supplies. I basically have to revamp his tank and get a completely new set of decor which is going to cost quite a bit, and I'm currently saving up for a 120 gallon for when he's closer to 8 months old. I finally got a decent uvb, the arcadia %12 and that also cost me a bit of money. It's definitely pretty rough worrying about being able to get food and supplies for myself while ALSO getting supplies for a pet.

I had one a male veiled chameleon and yes it is very pricey and very difficult pet at times not to mention the males are very aggressive I rehomed mine a while ago to someone who knew more about them and that can give them a better home he is doing great now

I'm so glad the fire skink made this list. They are truly underrated animals. I have one local pet store that carries them, but that is the only one I have found. I have 3 of them that all live together in a ginormous tank. They are almost off of quarantine, so they will be getting even more substrate soon. I absolutely adore them. I still love my beardies and day gecko. But fire skinks are my favorite reptile.

Hey everyone, really could use some help here asap. I have recently rescued 2 leopard geckos 2 days ago that were in badly unkept enclosures. I am a fish breeder and have no experience with reptiles so as new as it gets. I have since cleaned both enclosures with dawn ,hot water ,hydrogen peroxide, and steam cleaned. I have acquired a mercury vapor light with deep dome, and a vivosun reptile heat lamp and deep dome. My local reptile specific store gave me 2 different sands for the tanks which I found very odd. One like a play sand grit and slight moisture (very familiar with for freshwater aquariums) the other a more pool filter finer grain sand. UA-cam seems to tell me this is the exact opposite substrate these creature should be living on.
The larger which I believe is a male is currently in a 10 gallon which I have a 29 tall I will be upgrading him to asap as this seems to be recommended. The smaller which I believe is a female is in a 20 long. Both have eaten medium size Dubia roaches and drank water from a pipette and have water bowls. Both seem to be in healthy condition as I am unsure of how long they were abandoned for with both having good tail size and no obvious signs of total mistreatment or immediate risk.
Literally any and all help would be greatly appreciated 🦎

Bearded Dragons 😣 My first reptile I owned and my gosh I didn't know the price! Thankfully I am committed to mine and bought every single thing he needed. I spend about $80 a week to buy feeder crickets, meal worms, silk worms, and all his vegetables.

Hello, and I got a juvenile bearded dragon and I’m trying to introduce some different salads like collard greens or mustard greens and I’m having a hard time getting him interested in them. He’s eating crickets like a champ but will not touch the greens and I worry, if I do not introduce them early on, he won’t have any interest as an adult, I know that juveniles are supposed have mostly protein and not a lot of greens, but I do want him to be introduced to them if I don’t introduce them early on, he will show no interest in them as an adult. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions to get him in the slightest bit interested in at least trying them out? I am a new bearded dragon owner and would like to care for him in the best way possible.

Hi Ellie! I have a bearded dragon about 6 months old with a 40 gallon tank and I've noticed that when I take him out of the tank he always finds his way back to the tank and only seems to want to be in there and not taken out. Is this normal behavior? I'm worried I'm doing something wrong or is upsetting him:(
