I live opposite Aylesbury railway station. I see those trains every 15 minutes of every day. Never anything changes. No unusual coloured trains. Just tedium
It gets creepy when the voice says "Next stop west cementery. Last stop. All passengers please get off here.". It was the moment my second life began, the moment I realized I only had one.
Not on the tube, but... I quite like Marlow as it's a single track end of the line station, hidden away... And it's near a pub called The Marlow Donkey.
Hello. I used to travel from Kings Cross to Baker Street then on to Rickmansworth on the Metropolitan Line when visiting family for 28+ years. Love this video. 🙂🙂🙂
As someone who lives across the road from the Amersham Station and can see the signal cabin from my upstairs window, I agree, it does look a little out of place. Thanks for the extra info on Amersham's relative westerly location, good trivia knowledge to have up my sleeve. What Geoff didn't say is the station is at the bottom of the shopping street and all the amenities that it offers. Old Amersham is a 30-minute walk away through Rectory Woods (left out of the station, under the bridge and then right across the road to take a footpath to the woods that has a floor plaque stating 'METROPOLITAN & GREAT CENTRAL JOINT COMMITTEE PRIVATE PROPERTY' (see if you can spot it). Come To the end of the line at Amersham, you will not be disappointed.
This made me get on my shoes. Walk to Feltham, get on a South Western railway train to Waterloo and currently going to Baker Street to then get a train to Amersham because it looks beautiful. Great video Geoff.
There’s two railway workers that live in a Chesham here. We’re more than happy to show you the sights 😊. Chesham is great - not only is there an exhibition on at the moment called River to Railway but there is the Lido with a train view! It’s a beautiful part of the world. Early morning trains normally have deer sightings 😃
You’ve finally joins the 4k club. I’d say it looks at least 4 times better. You could see every flake of rust on the stairs. Excellent viewing on my 55” Qled. More please.
I remember maybee 2 years ago I wanted to film a train for my international friends. I where on a bridge and filmed down to the tracks. Once the little video where done I checked it. The train I wanted to film where all blurry and blended into the the blurry background. The fence right infront of the camera where crisp and highquality and you could clearly see every flake of paint peeling off from the rusty fence. 😂
I was raised in Amersham and now live in Chesham and it's great to see you come this way and share your thoughts and opinions on both stations and towns. :)
Geoff, you really need to do a race the tube. To be specific race the Elizabeth line? London Charing Cross to Abbey Wood? Northern and Elizabeth vs Nation rail?
I once did a challenge where I went to every end of the line in the New York City subway. It was really fun, and it’s cool to see someone doing it in London!
My girlfriend and myself still use the term 'Amersham' for a 'sneeze that tickles but never comes'. It's from the book The Meaning of Liff which gives the etymological reason that it's named after the Underground station 'Where the lines constantly rattle but the train never comes'.
I only remember a few entries; it's been a long time since I had a copy of this silly, but great fun, book. I'm kind of surprised that some of the entries never found their way into daily use - "Humber" being an obvious example.😂
Great informative video. I currently work at Hammersmith SCC but was formerly a signaller at Amersham, Rickmansworth, Edgware Rd and Hammersmith before the introduction of cbtc
Liking the start of this brand new series, have been to Amersham once when they ran Sarah Siddons on a heritage shuttle to Harrow-on-the-Hill but didn't knew the BR/LUL boundry was further away from Amersham
Love this Geoff and thanks for making a video on Amersham. Used the station daily on my commute for years. The hanging baskets outside the station were always a highlight
Used to love going to the end of the line as a kid living in Victoria, London. Went to Amersham in the early days of the A stock. Driver let me into the cab. Went from Amersham to Beconskott for a day out with mum. Went back for the first time since, only two weeks ago, to ride the '38 stock over the "north curve" to Watford and back. Arrived by car this time, I live near Buckingham now. Nostalgia inducing video.
What a brilliant new series, Geoff! There really is just something about the end of a line, and I'm very much looking forward to watching you explore all of them! Thanks for your lovely work you do!
Funnily enough we'll be travelling down from Birmingham to London in October and we already have an "end of the line" visit planned to Uxbridge. My wife's grandfather was a signaller based there, and lived in Hillingdon (where we shall also be visiting - I've never been but it'll be a memory lane trip for my wife).
I loved the tube so much as a kid that my mum brought me to London for my birthday in the early 90s and we rode around on the Underground all day. We got to Amersham and it doesn’t look like it’s changed much in 30 years. Happy memories.
Great to see you visit one of my local stations. I knew about the Mantells Wood foot crossing by Hervines Patk but not the crossing you went to. Did you not see the replica of Met No. 1 just up the road from the station? Certainly work seeing of you're in the area.
Been wanting to do this for a while, your video gave me the motivation to do it and I went today. Amersham is a nice little place and I'll go back again at some point when I have more time. It's probably the strangest "Underground" station I've ever been to as it's in the countryside. I used the bit of trivia about it being the Westernmost station in my uni lecture 👍
My grandparents lived so close to Amersham Station that, when we cleared out their house in the early ‘80s, we discovered the attic was full of soot left over from when steam engines served the line.
It would be worth mentioning that London Transport also had a bus garage in Amersham (garage code MA) that transferred over to London Country on January 01st 1970. The garage stood until it was demolished in / around 1995.
My brother and I were at Amersham the other week for the 1938 tube stock running. Lovely station, there is also a small replica of Metropolitan Stream loco near the roundabout.
I’ve personally grown up/growing up in Amersham and can say it is a lovely town with lots of lovely places. I have also been over that red footbridge many times as it’s a nice little walkthrough to get to places in Amersham.
When living in Bucks, especially when working in London on tour buses, Amersham was often my stepping stone onto the network. Last used it just after Christmas. Still a little unreal how you board the Tube in leafy countryside and within an hour arrive in the heart of the city.
When I moved to London I did something similar - however I only went up to the penultimate station of each line, then got on a train and reached the end station that way. The reason behind this is that I would never hear the "next stop is XXX where this train terminates" announcement if I went to the end station directly. Yes, I went to each one on foot, and that includes Heathrow and Theydon Bois. However in case of the Metropolitan I only went up to Moor Park to explore all those far-away branches.
I have always wondered what those far flung stations and suburbs at the end of the tube lines were like. Great idea I look forward to the rest of the series .
Looking forward to the rest of the series! For my part I actually completed my visits to every end station just a few months ago when I finally made it to Chesham. It's noteworthy that I visited Amersham way back in 1980 but my first ever end station was in the early 60s... Hounslow West (I was living in the North West but we had relatives who lived five minutes' walk from Osterley station) I also managed to get to Ongar in the 80s and of course I ticked off Aldwych too!
Very nice one Geoff. From Swanley, zone 8, I decided to get best use I could from Oyster. I travelled via Blackfriars and Farringdon then to Chesham by Underground, walked through those woods to Amersham and eventually back via Marylebone and Victoria. Unfortunately the museum was shut that day.
Did this one on our recent holiday in London. Amersham is certainly an interesting place, and some really nice sites to see. Love the path through the woods and the old church built in 1144. We plan on doing each one of your end of the line series when we get the chances. Well done, Geoff!
Loved the video Geoff. Thanks as always for cheering up my day. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Don't forget Cockfosters, a particular favourite of mine & not just for the name!
There's also the foot crossing you can get to via Longfield Drive, Amersham. This is fully within TfL boundary (not the edge) though no electrified lines, and only used by Chiltern Trains but does have lineside cabling. Sine the Ongar branch was removed from the tube this is the only public foot crossing fully on the Underground (North Weald was the other).
I was over in Amersham about three years ago on a vintage train that coincided with a heritage festival in the old town with vintage buses running to the Old Town and all manner of steam engine and vintage cars, it was a brilliant place! 😁 Ended up in a pub there chatting to locals who bought me pints all night as it was my birthday, wonderful group of folks, must get back there some day 😁
Really enjoyed that video Geoff. Couple of bits in it I didn't know though. You forgot to mention though the charming half scale wooden model of Met 1 down the end of the main road that ends at the station. Lovely little exhibit and if you're out that way it's well worth a walk up to!
I've been to Amersham recently. Me and my friend went there a month ago to take a ride on the art deco tube train from 1938 which was organized by the Transport Museum. And I can agree, the area down there is quite lovely.
Brilliant Geoff. Been to Amersham heritage day from Dorset several times, saw the Metropolitan 0-4-4 tank and Sara Siddons working. A great day, and town. Keep these videos going Geoff.
Ahh will love that, was one of the first things I did when I moved to London, go to the end of the line (where no one normally goes). Love how they made the new footbridge blend in with the others.
Loved this. Use the train going through to Chalfont and Latimer all the time and sometimes also Amersham. Our easy access to London is the best thing ever! 😀
Was always interested in the end of lines station so its great there is a new series about these stations. They deserve the attention as every other station
Travelled to Amersham a lot last year to campaign in the by-election. Absolutely fell in love with the area, and I used the Tube (or the Chiltern, whichever was first) to get to my hotel in Rickmansworth.
Geoff -- This looks like a fun series, and as someone who used to live between High Barnet and Cockfosters, I'm looking forward to those two. Your series will in time take you to Epping. Now the line USED to go to Ongar, but not now. However, I understand that distances / mileposts on the tube network are measured from the end buffers at Ongar. Could you talk about that? (or does it even rate a video of its own?). A polite suggestion here, all the way from Canada
A very interesting series. I'm looking forward to the next video. I live in Northern Ireland but was born in Amersham and lived in Chesham. Your video brought back memories of the station from many years ago.
Delightful station, enjoyable video and a great idea for new series. Just one criticism which is not your fault Geoff, it's just not the same without "A" stock 😎
I was put out of my flat at the height of lockdown and stayed at a house sit in Amersham for a few weeks, it was nice to get out of London and one of my few fond memories from 2020. Great video as always Geoff!
This is a cool idea. I've often wondered what it's like at the places at the end of the line. Only ever been to Richmond, Wimbledon and Edgware. Oh, and I think Epping once years ago when I fell asleep.
Nice to see my old stomping ground first up. I've sat in those sidings at around midnight before after falling asleep on he way out of London. And that crossing in the woods was on my school cross country route. Looking forward to Chesham.
Great promise from your new series, Geoff! Love it! Some fascinating facts about Amersham, which I didn't know...and this is my closest Underground station! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Amersham was the first underground station i went to. Seem to remember it took a long time to get into London. Good series Geoff looking forward to the next ones
Hey Geoff, there is a special service running on the LO today, from the lower level Willesden Junction to Stratford via South Hampstead, and connecting back to Camden Road. Was wondering if you could do a segement on that?
Great idea looking forward to the rest my mum used to definitely go to the end of the line to go to school she went from Quainton Road to Verney Junction every day
underrated station ! 🚆
bruh
youtube? what are you doing here
Is this what you wanted?
Ah, that's HOT, that's HOT.
Its underratedness matches the unexpectedness of this comment 😂
4:50 Geoff's excitement at the Chiltern train was the best thing ever 😄
I live opposite Aylesbury railway station. I see those trains every 15 minutes of every day. Never anything changes. No unusual coloured trains. Just tedium
Came here to say this.
Similar to the excitement of the dog at seeing Geoff. Must be a subscriber! 😄
Chiltern train horn
Geoff surprised Pikachu face
4:53 Feel the speed the SPEEDDD
That's because it was probably a great edit. We didn't actually see the train.
We are definitely here for more series like this. Thank you Geoff!
Yes, I always enjoy the videos
Hopefully it’s not just tube and mainline as well😊
End stations always have a certain vibe that I love. They often feel more relaxed, especially if its a somewhat rural/suburban area
Morden?
It gets creepy when the voice says "Next stop west cementery. Last stop. All passengers please get off here.".
It was the moment my second life began, the moment I realized I only had one.
What about Bank/Waterloo on the drain
Quant and old worldly, fantastic. I expected Poirot and Hastings to walk onto the station.
Not on the tube, but... I quite like Marlow as it's a single track end of the line station, hidden away...
And it's near a pub called The Marlow Donkey.
The end of the line for the dlr seems a bit silly but also fun to do in a day.
Imagine the Waterloo & City line! 🤣
I think if you try to do that one you get an error. Used to be you'd get a divide by zero for the circle line but then they turned it into a skillet.
Bank 😊
@@EdwardMason9000 that line is my favourite, but it’s awfully long for how short the between two place is
@@AlRoderick even before 2009 the end of the circle line was probably edgware road

The hill from Old Amersham back to the tube station though....

Great series Geoff. Please do this for every TFL line!
Another London rail series by Geoff makes me happy.
This series is a great idea! I can't wait to see you do High Barnet. Was my local tube stop when I used to live in London. Very nostalgic!
There’s two railway workers that live in a Chesham here. We’re more than happy to show you the sights 😊. Chesham is great - not only is there an exhibition on at the moment called River to Railway but there is the Lido with a train view! It’s a beautiful part of the world. You can also get them midday
had a few going home from school
I’ve always wondered about the extremities of the Tube Map and I’m happy to see this Series! The title card is fab as always 👏🏽
What a series! Thanks Geoff from Italy, you allow me to travel on railways that I don't have.
Come and visit the U.K. it’s not as bad as you think. Mostly…
You’ve finally joins the 4k club. I’d say it looks at least 4 times better. You could see every flake of rust on the stairs. Excellent viewing on my 55” Qled. More please.

Loved this video Geoff! I'm so excited for the rest of this series and yes maybe I will take a ride to Amersham this weekend.
The childish excitement on Geoff’s face when the horn blows never gets old
He was, in part, happy that his wait was so short.
