Lethal Weapon 4: Is It The Weakest In The Series?
Вставка

- After the success of LETHAL WEAPON 3, it was a given there would be a LETHAL WEAPON 4. But the next sequel proved to be surprisingly difficult to get into production. Until Warner Bros. realized they were heading into 1998 without a surefire summer hit on their hands. They gave LETHAL WEAPON 4 the greenlight and the movie was thrown together in a mad scramble. Twenty-five years later, it’s time to look back at the results of that rush job in this episode of REVISITED.

What in the actual F***....that Joe pesci froggy scene was heartwarming because Riggs looked at it is a sign that his wife was telling him to move on with his life, and it also showed that Leo felt like he was part of a family for once in his life and not alone anymore, conveyed once again when they said he should be in the picture after the babies were born. Riggs and Murtaugh becoming captains? That took up ...what? two minutes screen time total? I'll agree the fact that Murtaughs wife being a romance novel writer was baffling ... But it wasnt a big deal. The criticisms here are pretty F'n lame. There were plenty of goofy moments sure, but the entire series had these elements. This is ludicrous. The movie was acting as, not only as nice send off to the characters, but as a poetic send off for the people involved with the making of these movies since LW1.
I agree, I thought it was a touching and poignant monologue.
Each character got their great ending…just about
The frog scene was just strange. I'm at my wife's grave and you're talking about a frog?! It needed a rewrite.
Couldn’t agree more, my second favorite in the series after the first.
I felt the same way, a sort of disconnect with real audiences in how they see this movie. Chris Rock's 'standup rants' were EPIC! And Pesci's scenes were so much fun to watch.
The whole thing FELT fun, I can only assume the cast and crew were having a blast filming this thing since every scene makes me feel that. The Benny dentist scene was fantastic, I really only have good things to think back on on this movie.
Lethal Weapon 4 was a satisfying finale.
The action scenes are still really good in this movie
It's my fave in the series. Seeing jet li for the first time was awesome. And I really like the credits with all the BTS footage and the Eric Clapton song, pilgrim.
my favorite was Lethal Weapon: Cruise Control.
@@RoverIAC lol, indeed LW4 is the weakest crud in the series, an unnecessary sequel.
@@RoverIAC I think it was called Lethal Weapon: The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down
I agree. I always loved 4. The story wasn't the strongest but the action scenes were awesome.
According to box office mojo, the budget was $140 million. That fight scene between Mel and Danny and Jet Li is a classic.
Lethal Weapon 4 has always been my favorite of the series. Perfect blend of action, humor, and heartwarming moments. Plus, Jet Li was absolutely incredible and the final fight is perfect.
I understand how iconic the original two films in the series are, but after the third movie I felt they needed one more movie to fully wrap things up, and they feel that they absolutely delivered with Lethal Weapon 4. It is by far my absolute favorite in the entire series.
I actually really like part 4 , my favourite scene when they both decide they are too old to take on Jet Li , then go back and fight him anyway.
Let's go ask him
@@rxtsec1 best line ever.
Almost the most bug shit insanely violent part of the series too,
Considering how rushed the movie was made, and without a completed script, the entertainment quality would be affected
The fight at the end was worth it.
They definitely went a little more comedy but I thought it was a great send off to the series and I love the end credits
Agreed
A bit too silly, but overall good and a satisfying conclusion
@Chase Leibenguth Interesting with action franchise usually the first movie and the second movie are the best when you get to the 3rd or 4th one it goes downhill
@Chase Leibenguth The only Consistent action franchise are Mission impossible and John Wick now fast and furious should have stopped after fast 6
Yeah it did what it had to do and it was still good where it mattered
@James Cranley The first 3 movie's we're the best
I recently rewatched the entire series, back-to-back. And while this IS the weakest in the series, it's still not a bad movie by any means. In fact, it was so much better than I remembered. I think that if they had just toned down the Chris Rock a little, it would be much more fondly remembered.
4 Was the first one I saw in the series. Enjoyed it enough to want to see 1-3. IMO all of them are a fun watch. If you had to ask me which is my favorite, it would probably depend on what I am in the mood for. Leathal weapon is probably the best quadriligoy out there
I still rank it above 3. 1,2,4 and 3. With 1 and 2 they're so close it's usually hard to pick the better one. 4 is a fun trip while 3 just felt lackluster. My own personal opinion.. still my favorite franchise and I wouldn't be mad to see them as old men doing a fifth film..
Agreed
I still think it’s better than 3
I forgot about that chase with the house. That was a great action scene. Jet Li was an awesome bad guy too.
While it was the weakest, the fight scene at the end was awesome and had that, someones gonna die feeling. And the Froggy speech was something that was very heart warming. Dont give a shit what the razzies said, they must of had a great childhood with a ton of friends I guess
Personally, I thought that the storyline (even with all of it's side plots) worked REALLY well in this movie,, as it all ties in really well to the theme and overall feel of the entire series in general! The characters are just perfectly themselves, and are all at a point of reaching the PENTACLE of some of the VERY issues in their lives that they'd been coping with since their introduction into the franchise. Murtaugh has finally come to terms with "getting too old for this shit", and is learning to be accepting of his role as "grandpa" in life. Riggs is FINALLY learning to give himself over to something OTHER than "the job" (with having Lorna & the baby on the way). Lorna's whole character arc is matched step for step to who (and what) she really is in the series. Leo's whole deal matches him PERFECTLY, finally doing things "legal like" (becoming a P.I. and all), even if his crooked tendencies do try to get the better of him.... And Butters is definitely a welcome addition to the gang, having JUST the right amount of "Chris Rock" thrown in there to make it fun and be funny as hell, WITHOUT wearing out that welcome!! And with Jet LI getting involved?!?... Well,, THAT whole thing just speaks for itself (FANTASTICALLY)!! I don't know... Maybe it's because I was young when it came out (about 19), and had grown up to the series, that I look on it with rose colored glasses. But NOTHING about it was "underwhelming", or "just didn't go anywhere" to ME. 👍
The series is incredibly nostalgic and precious to me because they're my dads favourites and we watched them together when I was far far too young.
Like the previous movie, the comedy should have been toned down as it was very uneven with seriousness and comedy
The 4th movie is almost unrecognizable compared to the first. Starts out with a drugged out, half-naked girl throwing herself off a roof, Riggs being tortured by electroshock and an extremely suicidal Riggs. By the 4th film we have Chris Rock doing stand up at a crime scene and Murtaugh clucking like a chicken in his underwear.
While I don't think the last movie was horrible I don't typically recognize it as part of the lore much in the same way that I refuse to acknowledge Beverly Hills Cop 3 or the last two Bourne Identity movies as being truly representative of the spirit of idea that started those respective franchises.
I think 4 is slightly better than 3, and the Froggy monologue was a tear-jerker!
🤞 Gibson pulls off a solid 5th and final film
Now do Lethal Weapons 5-7 from Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia
3-4 are my favourite of the series.
Lethal Weapon 1 is so dark and gritty.
Lethal Weapon 2 is a good sequel
Lethal Weapon 3 is on another level comedy wise and action / story wise.
Lethal Weapon 4 is like a Sequel with the addition of Jet Li , it feels like a sequel to 3 ( yes it technically is but feels like 1-2 are connected and 3-4 are connected ) if that makes sense lol
All 4 movies are funny
Each film has their unique flavour but 4 is probably the most fun overall. Great action sequences, great comedy, great emotional payoffs and a nice end to the series.
Despite the flaws I like 4 there is a ton of closure even if the 5th is never made we really got to know where these characters are and thats very rare in an action series
This was the first Lethal weapon movie I saw and I still think this one is the best !
I love all the films. I think 4 is a blast. 3 was the weakest for me
I think so
I hate that this movie gets a bad rep… My dad had me watching these since I was a toddler and lethal weapon 4 is easily my favorite. It’s probably because it came out right around the time I hit 10 years old and I thought jet li was awesome and Chris rock was hilarious. Not to mention Mel was like a super hero to me because my dad had all his films on repeat growing up. My least favorite is actually 2 but I know many love the second as much as the first. I didn’t know a bunch of these facts about how difficult production was so that was all really interesting to me. Great Vid! Oh…. And I cry at Joe Peschis monologue every time. Razzies are the dumbest thing ever.
Weirdly, I liked lethal weapon 4. New challenge being people that can actually fight.
All four movies make up a universe I return to year after year, so for me - this is an awesome movie. It was a near perfect send off.
05:15; Silver tried to get him off the project according to Brigade Radio.
12:46 yo this fight was the same one in hobbs and shaw climax fight.
Wait, there are people that think Lethal Weapon 3 is better than 4?? That's absurd
I want to like this entry and, always watch it along with 1, 2 and 3 but the best part of it is the end credits (this isn't the sting you might think it is. The end credits are incredible having watched all four films). Nothing against Jet Li but suddenly we have moved from over-the-top cop buddy-buddy action film, to something borderline supernatural. There is nothing supernatural. The abilities of, and the action pieces involving Jet Li just make it feel that way.
i like how Murtaugh has been "too old for this shit" since the first movie, and he was gonna be retire yet decided to work an extra 20 years past his pension lol
4 was the sloppiest entry in the series but still highly enjoyable. The car chase was excellent as were the hand to hand combat scenes. Jet Li was great in his first North American role. The comedy scenes played well too. Definitely a worthy addition to anyone's collection.
"It's fried rice you plick"
The uncle Benny scenes were hilarious
It's still a good movie. I wonder what happens between this and Expendables 3 that makes Riggs go that way. That's still a mystery.
I saw this in the theater with my grandfather and I was 10…we watched the first one so much the vhs was worn out…the opening scene was awesome…nothing compares to the first one but they’re all good in their own way
One of the fastest turnarounds of any large scale summer film.
Good movie, but quick correction: BRAVEHEART wasn’t Gibson’s directorial depute; THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE is.
It is the weakest, but I've enjoyed it as I've gotten older as I love these characters. monologue in the cemetery is I think is some of his best work. Its quite emotionally moving, & its helped me when I adopted a new doggie last year after my best friend Basil had to be put to sleep (he says Riggs & Murtaugh aren't better than Froggy, but just different). The ending with the photograph of everyone is a fitting ending.
3 is weakest to me
Id say 3 was the weakest
Why?, I’m just curious because I think it’s decent, I’d say this is the weakest but still not bad.
It's a solid film despite its shortcomings. I think bringing Pesci back was a mistake though. Never liked the character. Richard Donner was a great filmmaker and you feel his influence on the Lethal Weapon films and the series should be left as it is. A fifth film after 25yrs wouldn't work.
short answer, Yes
I saw Lethal Weapon 3 in theatres with my Mother as a child and...tbh now as an adult I still love this movie.
It's probably my favorite one of the four but you still need to binge the trilogy for fun and cause ...c'mon it's Lethal Weapon 🎉❤😊
Hell yeah. I love them all and all the movies Richard Donner gave us. The man was and always will be a legend.
Lethal Weapon 4 was a great movie! Sure it was not like the other movies in the series, but it was the comedy that made it so great. I think if they had done any thing different at that time as Lethal Weapon 4, it would have bombed worse then any of Steven Segal’s latest movies. It was a great send off for Riggs and Murtaugh. Would I like to see a Lethal Weapon 5? No I would not! As to do a Lethal Weapon five, would be like watching Stallone step back in the ring for one last fight as Rocky.
Weakest film, but also best villain, Jet li really stole the show
YES! The Chinese baby saving them from the house fire may have been the worst, most convoluted scene I’ve ever seen in the entire ridiculous world of movies.
All 4 movies were great, I only had 4 as a kid and recently this week watched all of them and 3 is my favorite
I don't care what anyone says none of the lethal weapon movies are bad films, btw I liked Leo's frog story because he really helped Riggs in that moment.
While Lethal Weapon 2 & 1 are my favorites, 4 is actually the first and only one I saw for the longest time, partially cause it was on TV one day and I enjoyed it, and because I hated Rigg’s mullet, so never gave 1-3 a chance. But man, I’ve grown to love it and the entire franchise. Only second to Rush Hour imo for buddy cop movies.
Lethal weapon 4 is my 3rd favourite movie jet li is my favourite baddie of the franchise great action and comedy and a great finale to the franchise
#4 was the one that introduced me to the series.
The gentleman who played Uncle Benny played ANOTHER Uncle Benny in The Corruptor starring Chow Yun Fat and Mark Walburg. I believe that movie came out right after this one
I loved all 4 films & the 4th is actually my favorite, so it’s not the weakest to me, none of them are weak as far as I’m concerned
Makes sense Die Hard 3 could’ve been Lethal Weapon 4. It was never revealed who was arming those bombs in Lethal Weapon 3.
All 4 movies each have their own positive and negative aspects but they're all great movies!
Yeah Jackie Chan as a villain i don't think anybody would have bought or believed that.
I honestly don't think Jet Li was as much a villain as people think. Yeah, he definitely did some terrible things in the movie, yet it was done under the circumstance of attempting to save member of his family. Just my two pennies...
what a lovely movie. great wrap up. Richard Donner is legend because of this series.
I loved this film all of the side stories made the characters more believable because a lot happens in life not just straight action I think it's one of the best ones in the series ❤
Yeah i skip LW3 whenever I watch these movies. 4 isn’t perfect, but I enjoy it.
This was my least favorite of the series. I always felt that in the end that Riggs should have snapped and went batshit crazy one last time in his fight with Jet Li. That would have been cool to see and would have added a different spin on it.
Riggs was originally going to be killed at the end of the second one. I wish that was the case because the series went downhill after that. However, I will concede that the addition of Rene Russo was the right move.
In order..... Lethal Weapon 2 - Lethal Weapon 4 - Lethal Weapon 3 - Lethal Weapon 1..
The first and second were my favorites.
It’s actually the first one I ever saw and my favorite.
Lethal Weapon is like Mario Kart. You have your favorite (likely because it was your first) and then you know which is the best.
I cannot agree to that title. One of my favorites next to 2. Not just because of the Bruce Lee reference either.
Lethal weapon 5 has more black face than I expected, thanks to Dee, Mac and Dennis
I have a huge soft spot for this movie. It was the first R-rated movie I saw with both of my parents in a theatre. (I saw three with mom between summer 97, and this plus a couple with dad.)
Not a terrible movie but also not the way the series should have ended.
@@matthewdaley746 While I feel that #2 was the best entry, it would have been foolish to allow Riggs to die. The franchise and Mel Gibson were extremely popular at the time.
@@waverlyking6045
LETHAL WEAPON 2 was definitely the best one . That movie kicked my ass and left me bloody . LETHAL WEAPON 2 changed my fucking life . My first gun will be a Beretta 92 because of that movie .
@@DEMON-GLOCK You have a complicated history with that film, don’t you? 😂
Vast improvement on the 3rd movie, but the 2nd was the best of the series with the 1st a close second.
I saw this at the cinema opening weekend in '98. It is the weakest of the series. The rushed production shows on repeat viewings. I still like it.
I liked 4 and think it was the perfect closure to the series as the heart of lethal weapon is actually supposed to be the characters and the action is secondary crazy is to say, personally I think 3 was the weakest
I thought 3 was the weakest. 4 was probably my favorite 🙂
Loved all the LW movies
I would say 3 was weaker than 4
A few good scenes, but overall it has way too much going leaving Riggs and Murtaugh not getting the central focus they should have gotten. There is also something about the look and feel of the Film that just feels like any other action Film, the distinctive look of the franchise is lost.
I really wanted to like this one. I’m a huge fan of the trilogy but I ended up hating this movie. Everything, and I do mean everything, feels off with it, like looking at a Lethal Weapon movie through a dirty pane of glass. Jet Li is its only redeeming quality as far as I’m concerned.
LONG LIVE RICHARD DONNER!
Hola fedewolf , yo también pienso que Star wars episodio 3 es la mejor película de esa franquicia.
I recently watched ALL 4 of the Lethal Weapon movies... and I enjoyed the final entry (LW4) more than the 3rd ---> as it had JetLi who was an INCREDIBLE villain ( and the jokes landed ~ with the funniest was the dentist scene). Unlike LW3 had the weakest villain of an ex-cop turned weapons dealer... and the main characters of Gibson, Glover and Pesci WERE doing annoying 3 Stooges --> and were jokey in serious moments just like the current MCU... come on, it WAS stupid for Gibson to eat dog biscuits, etc.
I like Lethal Weapon 4, but I do agree it is the weakest of the series. A few issues I have with the movie is that some parts felt a little too convenient, like the part where the are all trapped in the house burning in flames and then all the sudden the kid shows up out of nowhere with no explanation of how he wasn't captured, where was he hiding, and why he just happen to have little scissors with him? The scene where Riggs was sliding on a table on the streets when he killed the bad guy was pretty dumb, and while the final action scene was cool, I have a hard time believing that Rigs and Murtaugh had a chance to even land a punch seeing how before Jet li knock them both out with no issues at that scene in the house. Still, despite its issues, it is an enjoyable movie, the chemistry between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is still great, the action is good, comedy is good, and Jet Li was a pretty badass villain in the movie.
What bothers me about lethal weapon 4 is the fact that Martin Riggs (Gibson), a former Green Beret and doesnt do much in terms of anything green beret like when he fights with Jet li. Riggs just feels schluby in 4
yeah I always felt that way. He may be older but once you're a soldier there's certain instincts you just don't lose.
Yes it’s the weakest but I think most film series will struggle after four movies.
The first two are perfect, three and four are really for fans only. I enjoy them all but recognise the main story is covered in the first two and the others are episodic in nature.
No one cares about your opinion it's a solid movie that still holds up today.
It’s not BAD. There’s just some horrendous writing in here. I already mentioned the baby in the fire, but yeah Leo Getz and his frog was friggin horrible, and didn’t fit what was going on in that scene AT ALL.
No matter what people say. This is my personal favorite of the series, not to be confused with the best, but my favorite. And features the 2nd best two against 1 fight I ever seen in my life. The Raid being the first of course.
This was the movie that keyed me into the legendary Jet Li.
He was legitimately scary in this movie imo.
Loved Lethal Weapon 4! The right mix of action, humor, and heart! The franchise ended the way it needed to!
I think 3 is the weakest. And I like 3. The villain was kind of weak for the actor they got (who is great), the plot with Darryl's friend, (What happened to the bomber??) Rigg's romance was a bit rushed even for the time. They probably could have cut the whole Murtaugh depression scene, skipped to the funeral and fleshed out the villain and Rene Russo more.
Having seen all 4 movies recently, I can honestly says yes. But only with the caveat that I enjoy all 4 movies. The whole series is great.
The fifth scene with Jet Li is almost as good as the first movie's final fight.
I always loved Lethal Weapon 4. I can't pick a favorite between all 4 movies. It's a great franchise. I would love to see Mel Gibson direct a 5th.
I heard a 5th one is happening and it’s called Lethal Finale. Apparently it’s in the works since early 2023 and may get a release date this year as well. Hard to know if it will come through.
I agree but still fun to watch
