    this video look at how to do a timming belt and a water pump on a 1997 opel astra
    do this at your own risk take your time always triple check your marks and triple check again use lots of tippex
    it will be satisfying to do a major job and get it right and save lots of money so good luck and have fun
    A timing belt, timing chain or cam belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. In an interference engine the timing belt or chain is also critical to preventing the piston from striking the valves. A timing belt is a belt that usually features teeth on the inside surface, while a timing chain is a roller chain.
    Timing belts must be replaced at the manufacturer's recommended distance and/or time periods. Failure to replace the belt can result in complete breakdown or catastrophic engine failure, especially in interference engines.[4] The owner's manual maintenance schedule is the source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 80,000 miles

    I made a mistake in the video I said you should be able to twist a timing belt or 180°
    This is not true You're only supposed to twist it 90 degrees you can see in the video I say 180° but I only twist it and 90 degrees

    Thank you so much for this! Bought my Corsa X14SZ 2 years ago. Without any technical car knowledge. I kept reading for months. Started with car basics, find out how a fuel engine works.
    This vid helped me so much...
    Changed 4 months ago the timing belt, tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, alternator belt. All parts were Gates. And replaced all other parts; oil, coolant, filters, sparkplugs etc.
    Today I checked the belt tension and it's still fine after 3000km/2000miles.
    The engine has driven 230.000km/150.000 miles and still no oil usage. Still going strong!

    There is much easier way to get timing belt on. Take out tensioner. Put timing belt on correctly according to marks. Then on the tensioner push the two moving parts so that the holes line up. Put alen key through holes. Now simply install the tensioner. It will go in easily. After inslalling it pull out allen key, and it will tension the belt.

    Thank you very much (sarc) for making me aware of how badly I've been ripped off in the past for things like replacing the water pump (two hundred hours labour, realigning the chakras etc). A gentleman mechanic would at least have had the courtesy to point a gun at me. By doing the cylinder head gasket myself I saved ninety per cent of what they quoted me (fortunately no warping as I caught it early). With my new confidence I think I'm ready for a job in Formula One.

    Great video! I need to change the thermostat on this engine. Complete amateur though. Is it possible to remove the top cam with the belt still on and leave it hanging on a spring or for somone to help hold it, so the plastic cove can be removed to get to the thermostat housing? Im worried about messing up the engine timing. Any help or guidance is appreciated!

    Your new tensioner, arent they usually loaded with a pin? So when you install it, you just pull the pin and the tension is set.

    HI, good video. Did you tighten the pulley using air gun / bolt gun? I've heard theres high chance of breaking the little notch that keeps the pulley in certain position to break if you use air gun to tighten it all the way.

    Great video, really helpful but could you answer three questions for me please? 1) Does the belt turn clockwise as you look at it (if the new belt has the arrows you mention I want to be sure which way it fits)? 2) Can the bottom pulley bolt be reused? Some says its a stretch bolt and must be replaced but I would have thought a new one would come with the kit if that were the case. 3) When you said to turn the engine over twice to listen for rattles, etc, how do you turn it? Is that just by turning one of the pulley bolts with a spanner? Thanks.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  6 років тому +1

      Graham Hayman hi mate yes as you are looking at the timing belt turn it clockwise on some of the newer cars you can't reuse the boat you have to check the service information to be sure as you can see in all my time in videos I turn the bottom crank by hand with a ratchet to make sure there's no binding to make sure it turns fully this will ensure you've got the time incorrectly before you start it

    I once had a guy turn up at the door with one of these with the belt broken how he got it up the hill I'll never know he was all for scrapping the car as it was a bit of a shed and thought the engine was ruined. I offered to put a new belt on and show him it would be OK knowing it is a non interference engine as I had a belt there at the time he said OK and said he would come back next day I made him wait and 20 minutes later he was driving away happy as Larry minus 30 quid. Those were the days. Nowadays a belt is a nightmare on most motors I'm glad I changed careers.

    Hello ,This video has been a great help to me i own 2 astra's a 04 mk4 1.6 and 1.7dti my 1.6 has only done 40.000 miles ,anyway ive nearly finished it ,ive got the tensioner set up right-ish by turning the water pump as you said,(cant belive its only 3 washers holding it in ) ,ive turned the engine by hand a couple of times and the pointer on the tensioner seems to move around a bit but settles around where the cut out bit ,so thinking i'd put the bottom pully back on and start her up , all is well ,the pointer stays in the right place ,But the second time i ran the engine for longer as i put water back into the rad ,after i done that i turned off and i ended up looking at the tensioner and the pointer was above out of the cut out ,i was nearly going to move the water pump again when mum called me,when i finally got back to do it ,the pointer was back in the right place again ,was this because the engine had cooled down? thank you!

    Hey mate... iv heard that the army uses diesel to flush the old oil, whats your take on this?

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      well diesel is a good cleaner but it leaves a residue behind it I'd say they made me do it because they have to do things quick but we can spend a bit more time in cleaning it

    To clean the engine, does it have to be old oil, or can it be new?

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому +1

      hi mate new oil is best but very expensive because you're only using it for a few minutes or hours so if you got any old oil lying around that has not been to terminated with anything else I would use that and then put the fresh oil in

      Birtyfurry hi mate it's very difficult for me to say as I cannot see the vehicle but if you're worried about your time and just take off your covers and check to make sure you're timing marks a line also just make sure your throttle body is completely clean all the little jets where the vacuum pipes go through are all clean and not clogged

    4:36 I see some oil there, is that engine losing oil ? Is there a risk of oil getting to the timing belt, or is that normal.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  4 роки тому +2

      Hi mate yes there is a risk of it getting on the belt and that is not a good thing and no it is not normal if you see this it has to be corrected straight away I can only do what the customer is telling me to do it I can't do extra work if the customer doesn't want to do it
